Well this is literally the calm before the storm. I hope that no one in the starting lineup plays.
Failed to make heads nor tails out of the injury report. Towns is GTD, which stands for something I presume… Game To Day, Going To Devonshire, Grand Towns Delay, Ground To Death…
lol in case you were serious I presume it means game time decision.
Mikal will play at least a little, just to keep his streak alive. Beyond that, I want to see a whole lot of Kolek, Dadiet, McCullar, and the two-way guys.
Boy, just finished listening to the tail end of today’s Macri pod (which begins with him interviewing Shump Shump). It’s him and his producer basically having a therapy session about how underwhelming they’ve found this season, and how convinced even Thibs Fan Number One Macri is that the team is not only going to replace him this summer, but should. At one point, Andrew the producer suggests that a strong playoff showing (at minimum, making Boston sweat in the second round) could save Thibs’ job, and Macri actually questions whether this would be good for the franchise!
Does Brunson need another 20 minutes for All-NBA or is he good now?
Brunson qualified for all-NBA in the Cleveland.
Brunson’s played 65 games, so he’s good. But given Thibs played him both games of a b2b coming off injury, no way he sits today. Especially when he needs to fully find his rhythm
“Thibs played him both games of a b2b coming off injury”
…makes me think Macri et al. are right… but then I get Fizdale PTSD…
What the heck is Stan Van Gundy doing calling Knicks fans front runners?
Other than a token 5 minutes for Bridges none of the starters should play. I’d argue he should play Towns and Mitch together for a few minutes, but he’s had that chance repeatedly and the other night against the Cavs (perfect opportunity) gave Towns the night off. So either he doesn’t like the combo much or he’s saving it for the playoffs.
He must have an alias on Twitter (X) and is reading what Knicks fans are saying. 🙂
I thought he gave a pretty good analysis of the Knicks, Celtics etc…
I mean, it’s ridiculous. Cmon Stan. Best fans in the NBA.
Sounds like SVG is just pointing out that Knicks fans tell it like it is, sort of a backhanded compliment? I mean just look at the last post-game threads from this past week…sounds like, at least for some, the hate affair thing is pretty real here at KB!
Macri had a typical hangover depression/sadness effect from their party the night before. We all know last summer’s moves didn’t pan out as well as the FO thought they would. This team is not a championship contender, it never was, but the 50 wins show that Thibs has gotten the most of this roster. Not to mention that both Brunsons, Hart, and Thibs are all tied to the hip. Barring a first-round playoff collapse, Thibs is going nowhere.
Instead of being hysterical scapegoat seekers and Debbie Downers, always remember we have a good team, and hope they will surprise us in the playoffs. I have no doubt they will be prepared well by Thibs.
We’re in desperate need of flexible thinking in our coaching. If Thibs can’t astral project this offseason and take a look around and see what’s what or imagine what could be… then Leon needs to be flexible and do the looking around for someone who can be. It’s been and remains a good ride. Let’s keep it that way and grow.
In the meantime, let’s see what this 50 some odd slog of wins has rendered out. Is the team gonna be weird when it counts(still)? Is Jalen Brunson about to take it to another level? Is KAT gonna realize that the radio in the car is on but he’s gotta actually turn the motor on to go (I still like an fm surf)… OG and JB gonna look each other in the eye and say “I need you… let’s do this together” and then actually like mean it.
I’m fucking psyched for the playoffs in this oddly banal season of superstar trades and three teams bee lining to the end in some Ennio Morricone impossibility.
He doesn’t have the perfect team to work with, but I agree with that sentiment. The starting team is absolutely loaded with offensive talent, but our offense looks terrible almost every time it’s tested against a decent defense. Our defense has 2 obvious holes, but it’s hard to make a case he’s improved us significantly in some areas. We still suck defending the 3 and the paint (unless Mitch is playing).
When the season started, I argued strongly that Hart should start or we’d have a huge rebounding issue even though I expected Towns to rebound better at C than he did at PF next to Gobert. I was right on both counts. Towns had a big year on the boards and Hart filled the Randle gap.
However, when teams started putting small men on Towns to help take away the 3 pointer and were leaving a big man on Hart because he was slumping and afraid to shoot 3s, it was killing us. We have the best 3 point shooting C in the history of the game and he was shooting fewer 3s than in the past. That’s crazy with all this talent.
At that point you have to either put Mitch in there for Hart and sacrifice offense for interior defense, put Deuce in their for Hart and sacrifice size and rebounding for offense and spacing or at least feed Towns in the post and punish them for putting a smaller guy on him.
Instead we were seeing minutes with Hart and Precious, Hart and Mitch, Precious and Mitch that logically made no sense and didn’t look good on the court.
He’s locked into what he’s already doing and what his favored data says, but then when other teams make adjustments, he doesn’t adjust back quickly. He stays with what he was doing way longer than is appropriate and sometimes he never adjusts at all. We are not going to win big like that, especially in the playoffs where game to game adjustments are huge.
Agree strat. Until we see extended mins of towns+Mitch or deuce minus Hart + the rest of the starters, it’s hard to fully evaluate the roster against the top echelon teams, esp the Celtics. Challenge is assuming we get past the pistons, Thibs won’t change the lineups until it’s 0-3. For the cavs, we should start towns+Mitchell, or play them outsized mins together , for the celts I’d start deuce or play him outsized mins with the rest of starters minus Hart. It’s too easy for the elite teams to defend against or score against us otherwise. I’m curious to see what adjustments Thibs makes and by when, that should be a marker for decision making on making a change or no.
some pistons matchup thoughts.
1. during the season mikal was the primary cade matchup. it never looked great for us, and cade mostly got where he wanted. in the most recent game, we put deuce on him for pretty much the entire game. pretty confident this was just thibs making a reciprocal tariff self harm threat against a team he knew we were likely to meet in the postseason, and hopeful it’s a prelude to putting OG (who didn’t play) on him in the series. although it’s sad to say, bridges best use on defense this series is probably sticking to beasley/th2.
2. all season bickerstaff has tried to put cade on jalen. this seems like a huge mistake. cade isn’t horrible defending him, but he’s far from great. and jalen tires him out and gets him in foul trouble. you have to think they’ll switch it up and mostly stick ausar on him, but if not i think that’s a big win for us. cade is the type to strongly request checking jalen.
3. KAT’s advantage over duren on O is leagues better than against beef stew. in the regular season matchups there was little evidence that anyone on the knicks was aware of this (especially kat). i think we’d be much better off leaning hard on kat to attack duren on drives more and spread/pick and pop more against stewart. during the year we did the opposite. mitch also has a big ORB edge on beef stew and it would be great if we could try to game that matchup a bit.
4. the pistons are the best team in the league at getting transition off of live rebounds. this is an advantage that often diminishes in the playoffs and is a definite coaching opportunity for us. it will be incredibly frustrating if our wingstoppers, who suck at offensive rebounding anyway, don’t get back consistently. because we know that KAT will probably not be getting back and jalen will struggle to stop transition even when he’s there.
5. when they manage to get jalen switched onto cade in the post, we need to surprise him. as good as cade has become he’s still a mistake maker. letting him iso on jalen is not an option but during the year our doubles were slow and predictable. making it easy for a very good but overconfident passer is an ugly, unnecessary mistake.
i get the pessimism but i still like us in the series.
lastly i’d like to say that i think many of the smartest observers have over-indexed to the cost of josh being ignored on offense (though the cost is real). reminder that josh and kat played over 4000 offensive possessions together this year with an elite 122.8 per 100 rating. since jan 1 that is still 122.2. josh is not primary the reason kat isn’t taking 3s. with josh on kat took 6.7 3pa per 100 and hit 43%. with josh off he took 6.2/100 and hit 37.5%. note that KAT only took 7/100 last year when Gobert was off and he was the 5. i think the blame is much more mixed here among thibs, kat and jalen with josh’s anti-gravity being a tertiary factor. josh gets ignored but he a very smart mover in space and is the quickest and most context-aware simple passer on the team. he has assisted 37 KAT threes this year and the next highest knick is at 24.

Knicks starters: McBride, Payne, Bridges, Tucker and Achiuwa.
Funny story, when I did the Pop quiz with PJ, I told him he started 666 career gms. The interaction didn’t make final cut, but he was freaked out and was hoping to start one more.
He got it.
