2026 NBA Playoffs NBA Finals: Knicks @ Spurs Game 1 – We Are an Impossibility in an Impossible Universe

I’ve been talking so much about how the universe has decided to go out of its way to please me this postseason (and man, has it fucking pleased the shit out of me!), so I thought it only right for me to title this one after a notable Ray Bradbury quote about the universe, which he noted in a 1975 PBS interview with Maya Angelou, “We are an impossibility in an impossible universe.”

That is what it feels like to be rooting for a Knicks team that is not only A. kicking everyone’s ass, but also B. Getting all the right breaks, as well.

Mitchell Robinson literally BROKE HIS HAND, and yet he is going to play for the Knicks tonight. OG Anunoby strained his hamstring and it was, like, “Nah, this is the rare ‘It’s all good’ hamstring strain!” None of this makes ANY sense. Karl Anthony Towns decided, three games into the playoffs, to suddenly play like one of the most valuable players in the NBA. As Knicks fans, it is so hard to deal with so much good fortune. It feels so wrong, and yet, it feels so right.

The Warriors were a bit of a joke for years, and then they weren’t. The Patriots were a joke for years, and then they weren’t. The Red Sox were “cursed,” and then they weren’t.

All I wanted to make this a successful Knicks season was to make the NBA Finals. They’ve done that. I’m already happy with them just getting this far.

However, I mean, come on, they just ANNIHILATED two teams in the last two rounds! They’ve won 11 PLAYOFF games in a row! The Spurs, meanwhile, obviously weren’t expected to make the NBA Finals this fast. The last time we saw a team like this make the NBA Finals earlier than expected was when Lebron dragged a mediocre AF Cavaliers team to the Finals in 2007 (Mike Brown was the coach!) where they were destroyed by the Spurs. The 2026 Spurs are obviously MUCH better than the 2007 Cavaliers, and unlike that team, the Spurs truly are not just “Wemby and some scrubs.” They have a very good team.

They also, however, play sloppy basketball a lot of the time, and they are suspectible to teams that can spread the floor (as Wemby is amazing in the middle, but he obviously can’t guard everyone behind the three-point arc).

That’s the Knicks in the nutshell. They crush sloppy teams, and they can all shoot except ol’ One-Hand Mitch.

If you didn’t know the names of the teams involved, I think most people would be picking the team that has destroyed everyone they have played, and whose skills are the ones that the Spurs struggle with (and who beat the Spurs twice already).

And I don’t think we should change that approach just because they are the Knicks.

So I don’t think I need to ask the universe to hook me up, because we live in impossible times, and the Knicks are just destroying everyone, and I think that that will include the Spurs, as well.

Knicks in five (and I really think it’ll be a sweep, but that just sounds a bit TOO impossible).

Let’s go, Knicks!

Despite the score, I feel pretty good after the scale of that ref job. Also, the spurs offense does not scare me at all. I think we’ll be able to make effective adjustments in the second half and over the course of the series

Knicks ain’t winning this series if Brunson and KAT are going to shoot a combined 35%.

Brunson not locked in yet. Getting pickpocketed by Fox 35 feet up the court is unacceptable but he’ll clean it up. No one is more upset about it than him.

Again, 3 FREE THROW ATTEMPTS IN THE HALF is fucking crazy. But we’re still in it.

If you told me that KAT and Brunson were 8-23, that the Knicks were shooting 30% from deep vs 37% from the Spurs, and that the FT disparity is 12-3, I’d think we’d be losing by 15-20 points.

Gotta keep in mind he’s Champagnie, which is to say “champagne-like.” Not the good stuff. Just cover him already.

KAT’s ability to guard Wemby is a really positive sign.

I thought they got good looks from deep, but forced a bit inside.

The second half is going to be interesting. KAT is playing smart and well vs Wemby. When Hart was in the game they were running up and down the floor and that will kill Wemby.

Just don’t leave Champignie open in the corner and the second half will be fun.

It would be nice to get a reasonable whistle.

Not bad, given they were sitting for nine days. Offense really rusty (credit to the Spurs intensity, too), but defensively we are trying. Our three most important concerns at the moment are 1. Brunson’s leg, 2. Spurs pushing and shoving (and refs allowing it), and 3. Champagnie. I know we can’t control the first two, but allowing Champagnie to go off from three is just inexcusable. Absolutely inexcusable.

The way Shaq pronounced Champagnie’s name during the pregame show was hilarious.

Champagnie seems to be getting open because we’re sending his man to bump Wemby on cuts or rolls. I don’t think it’s as simple as staying glued to him, Wemby gets a catch in the paint on the move otherwise.

Man I was really worried when we got down fourteen but once we made our run, I knew we had it.

The composure and poise of this team is like nothing I have clever witnessed. They just do not get rattled.

Wemby presents big problems in the pain that we haven’t faced yet and I do think the spurs are not gonna go as easy as the Cavs or Philly or Atlanta. But all of our rotation guys are so solid. Defensively were so good. KAT was excellent tonight and key to that comeback in the third. Hart was a maniac on the boards and then you get the Brunson barrage (plus some OG for good measure) to close it out.

Also lowkey shoutout to Alvarado who stepped up when Brunson was hurt and gave us some good minutes. We might see some minutes from him this series.

This is the closest we’ve been since 99 and really since 94 because we’re now up in the series.

Yeah Alan KAT was so good tonight. Of course Brunson is going to get the praise for the fourth quarter but KAT was fucking great. Wemby might be a freak of nature but KAT plus Mitch is still better than Wemby.

And gotta say. Mitch looked ok out there. Have us defense and boards. I’ll take it!

Also, Jalen closed hard and is a goddamn hero but this was a total team victory – 12-31 isn’t his best game

Incredible. Can’t give up on this team. That was like the first game against Cleveland

And we’re going to get better in this series bc we actually can shoot and Scott Foster can’t ref every game. What is San Antonio going to do, get more athletic?

The way they always react, calm and collected no matter how many points they’re down, is out of this world.

That KAT clip gave me chills. They are so composed. They know exactly what time it is, what the opportunity is in front of them, and how to take advantage of it.

This team is amazing… i loved the 90s, but this team is getting ahead of those teams even with nostalgia helping the 90s teams! 🧡💙
