The one day I didn’t post in the morning was game 3. That day I thought “I’ll be super productive instead, it will make the day go by quicker.”

So good morning, you glorious MFers.

    4

Good morning everyone. Today is the day we have all been waiting for. Let’s do this.

    2

That this might be the last day of the year that the Knicks are NOT the World Champions is a pretty fucking insane thought to tide us over until tonight.

    2

By the way, I was just listening to Hank Azaria complain about Taylor Swift being at Game 4, and, like, holy shit, people, what kind of weird effect does this lady have that she draws SO much ire for just doing the most basic celebrity shit ever?

You got the Monica McNutt incident, you got Azaria complaining about her being there, who in the fuck WOULDN’T want to attend a Knick game right now, people? If you were one of the most famous people on the planet, and people will just give you tickets to any of the biggest events in town, who WOULDN’T go to anything that seemed interesting?

It’s such a weird tempest in a teacup situation. Famous people like to go to big events, and said big events like famous people there, so who is this hurting? I assure you that no “regular” fan was missing the game because the seats they hold for the A+++ listers went to Taylor Swift.

It’s a nothingburger, and yet so many people want to bitch about it.

If you are rooting for the Knicks, come me on in. I welcome all fans. New, old, temporary fans. Who cares. More the merrier.

    1

Taylor Swift danced even when we were down almost 30. We won. She was there. Keep dancing In the crowd Taylor and the players will keep dancing on the court.

    1

Some random thoughts I’ve been having…

The path to OG’s tip began when we signed Marcus Morris and he played well enough to merit a 1st round pick.

Wu Tang should have been the Yankees’ answer to Ice Cube in the World Series.

Does inviting Wu negate inviting Trump?

Kevin Durant chose the Nets and said it was because the Knicks weren’t cool any more.

    How’s it goink?

    2

I agree on the Taylor Swift silliness. People just want to be mad at something and she’s an easy target part of the gestalt has decreed is bad. Like in the Superbowl a few years ago, she had less than a minute of total screen time in a nearly 5 hour circus. Relax, people. Find something else to actually be outraged about.

Anyway, I cannot remember the last time, if ever, I have felt so simultaneously excited and anxious at the same time. Not sure how much more of this my body and mind can take, so I’d really appreciate the Knicks closing it out tonight the same way we’ve closed out every other series this postseason.

    1

The path to OG’s tip began when we signed Marcus Morris and he played well enough to merit a 1st round pick.

I want to get back to this one… Think about it… all those games we watched in that Fizdale year turned out to be consequential, because Marcus Morris played well enough to be turned into a pick that became a player that became OG who tipped it in.

Imagine going back in time and telling us in a 2019 game thread that two of these power forwards would turn into two of the three best players on a championship team.

And it all happened because Kevin Durant thought the Nets were cooler than the Knicks.

    1

    Maybe Hank wanted her seats?

A friend of mine played poker with him and said he was a major jerk, in a classic never-meet-your-heroes kind of way.

My daughter was delighted to see Taylor at the game when she watched the morning highlights and I loved it too. The Haimmsisters too. That’s a very merry crew.

Heading to London in an hour, not sure how I am going to watch the game, but will do my best

    4

One thing we can fully credit Scott Perry for is that he was 100% the reason they dealt Morris for that pick. He essentially got Mills fired just to get that deal done.

    1

Heading to London in an hour, not sure how I am going to watch the game, but will do my best

I suggest by not heading to London

    2

…thought to tide us over until tonight.

It’s a nothingburger, and yet so many people want to bitch about it.

part of it is a general resentment toward bandwagon hoppers because from the outside its seems like they get all the bounty of the finish line without having slogged though the hell of the mile markers. but that’s almost always just a bad impression. it can be sort of fun being an opportunistic reveler but inside you’re still basically a joy zombie compared to the real thing.

and in the spirit of the mile markers i recommend soaking in some of the threads from what was probably the nadir of the season to coil the spring for tonight.

What good is the warmth of summer, without the cold of winter to give it sweetness.

One thing we can fully credit Scott Perry for is that he was 100% the reason they dealt Morris for that pick. He had to fight HARD to get Mills to agree to that deal.

It’s even more ridiculous. They fired Mills to make that deal.

    Mills fired Feb 4

    Morris traded Feb 6

    1

Potentially interesting exercise… if we were to give a ring to every person who contributed to this title, who would be on the list?

The only rule is you have to have contributed by doing something positive. So Marcus Morris gets a ring, for example, but Kevin Durant doesn’t. They both made this possible, but only Morris’ contribution was positive for us.

Obviously Thibs, Julius Randle, Donte DiVincenzo are big ones.

Marcus Morris is an obscure one.

Scott Perry for the reason Brian mentioned.

Who are some fun ones that somehow contributed to all this?

If anyone can trace something back to Langston Galloway you get a prize.

A friend of mine played poker with him and said he was a major jerk, in a classic never-meet-your-heroes kind of way.

i also have a friend who played in that game if you’re talking about the regular game that often included a recent yet now former nba owner.

I don’t think this board needs much convincing that seemingly small personnel decisions can have profound long term consequences.

If I could cancel this trip I would.

And I don’t think it’s the same game. This was in a condo in NYC. Probably about 12-15 years ago. He was super prickly apparently and very think skinned, which checks out.

And I don’t think it’s the same game. This was in a condo in NYC. Probably about 12-15 years ago. He was super prickly apparently and very think skinned, which checks out.

still checks out but who knows. don cheadle sometimes played in it as well.

It may be. I played in the same game a couple of times but never with any celebrities.

Kevin Pollock used to be there a lot.

At this point Taylor Swift is such a huge celebrity that all the fringe ones are going to involve her in the discussion somehow because it just brings eyes and clicks. I have never willingly listened to one of her songs but I’m already tired of people bashing her to put themselves in the media.

    2

It’s even more ridiculous. They fired Mills to make that deal.

Ha! I remembered that aspect of the story as soon as I posted it, and edited my comment to reflect it, but not fast enough for your quote! 😉

I want to get back to this one… Think about it… all those games we watched in that Fizdale year turned out to be consequential, because Marcus Morris played well enough to be turned into a pick that became a player that became OG who tipped it in.

Don’t forget the Knicks getting the 3rd pick in the 2019 draft and picking RJ. Do we get the OG deal done with a damaged Zion or Ja?

Watching the interview, Azaria comes off much better on the seats stuff (sarcasm doesn’t always come across well in print), but the Taylor Swift shade is bad either way. He’s just oddly a dick about her her for, like, existing.

If anyone can trace something back to Langston Galloway you get a prize.

langston galloway is child’s play. we are adults.

knicks trade john starks (plus mills/cummings) for sprewell
knicks trade sprewell in four team deal for Keith Van Horn
knicks trade Van Horn in 3 team deal for nazr mohammed (plus tim thomas)
knicks trade nazr for malik rose and 2005 and 2006 firsts
knicks draft david lee with that 2005 first
knicks sign and trade david lee for anthony randoph et al
knicks include anthony randolph in melo trade
knicks trade melo for kanter, dougie mcbuckets and a 2018 2nd
knicks draft mitchell robinson with 2018 2nd

shit this is hubert. he’s going to say starks is disqualified bc he gets a ring anyway. but chris mills was also in that sprewell trade. and we got him for scott brooks, dontae jones, walter mccarty and recent first round pick john thomas. and we go john thomas by trading …hubert davis

Alana Haim was born in LA and lives in LA.

I thought the “STEVIE KNICKS” trifecta T-shirt collection was cutesy and lame.

Parts of the “Celebrity Row” thing are ok, parts are lame; the incessant focus by ABC and ESPN on the “celebrities” at a particular game is exceedingly lame. They’re trying way too hard.

    2

Go win the damn championship boys.

Saturday night NYC will never see anything like it.

That’s quality work, Milo. But the Anthony Randolph link is a little spurious. The only guy in that whole chain that I might consider having a ring-worthy contribution is Melo for yielding Mitch, but I think giving the ring to Perry covers him and I don’t want to give Melo a ring.

Give Ndour a ring for making sure the Knicks didn’t get KAT until he could be serious about his game.

    3

Ok..I have just one question before I go do my lawn before it gets super hot..

Have those OG/Kawhi comps finally come to fruition? Because I can’t help but see it during this postseason run…

    1

hank’s from queens…honestly, I’d be a little surprised running in to any old new yorker and then find out they were not a bit of a dick…

it’s in the water there, which also helps with the great bagels and pizza crust…

sort of like what they say when folks get in the ring: protect yourself at all times, would imagine sitting down to a card game with folks (and strangers at that) is a little/lot weird to begin with…

come here friend, sit, relax…I would like to take your money…

took me nearly all game to read what was on her shirt…

she is a cutie though…I like that, taylor swift and the haimsters…

Frank told Fizdale, “I’m a dog too, Coach.” Who knows how much that subtle act of insubordination had to do with Fizdale getting fired, and Fizdale getting fired was the founding act of this glorious era.

Frank also *just* missed blocking that Game 1 game winner by Trae Young, which propelled the Hawks to a decisive series win. If the Knicks win that series, who among us can be certain where the fates and the butterfly effect might taken things? Not here — that’s for damn sure.

I know where one of my “What If?” rings are going.

I’m down with Ndour. We probably never become this team if we draft KAT.

And as d-mar suggested, RJ gets one too bc he was an important piece of the OG trade

the incessant focus by ABC and ESPN on the “celebrities” at a particular game is exceedingly lame.

Non celebrities get one shot, and never a 2nd one on TV.

    1

very nice work GWilkins, and a good morning and thank you for that…

awesome to wake the mind reading stuff like that…if you could please, keep it comin’ luv…

Finish it tonight, Knicks. I need my nights and days after free again. Let me celebrate and sleep!

No rings for Cam Reddish, Ryan Arcidiacono, and Matisse Thybulle. They may have been part of the Hart trade but they were just matching salary and don’t meet the “positive contribution” threshold.

That would disqualify Yabu, as well, for his role in the Alvarado trade, but Yabu’s probably getting one anyway 🙄

hmmmmm, odd, thinking of hank and other new yorkers, i generally get along well with folks other folks think are assholes and dicks, wonder what that sez about me…

May they all be Moses who wandered with us in the desert, never to join in the land of milk and honey.

    1

not surprised one bit to see the extender’s name pop up today…the NBA seems pretty set on following a script…

no doubt it will take a minute miracle to win tonight’s game…

thankfully it seems our team has a bag full of them…

    1

“hmmmmm, odd, thinking of hank and other new yorkers, i generally get along well with folks other folks think are assholes and dicks, wonder what that sez about me…”

New Yorkers are kind but not nice, flip that around for most of the rest of the world.

    1

The NBA chose The Extender as head referee for tonight.

JFC. That fucker’s gonna do everything he can to gift this one to the Spurs, isn’t he?

everywhere else being mostly disingenuous you mean E…

nice milo…joy zombie adds a little variety to the joy thief world…

My final list for ring-worthy contributions to this team is:

    Randle
    Morris
    Donte
    RJ
    Thibs
    Perry
    The Wu Tang Clan
    Ndour

Scott Foster was by far the best ref in this series. We won his game by 10 pts.

What scares me is if they’re bringing refs back that might mean Tony Bruthers is on deck.

I think part of the issue with Swift is that she was at one of the Knicks/Cavs games in Cleveland with Travis Kelce who is from the area and he was wearing a Cavs hat. So the assumption is she’s not even a Knicks fan.

Personally, I couldn’t give a rat’s ass about any of them, but if I was in charge of MSG and thought it was good business to comp celebrities, I’d comp the ones that showed up regularly and that supported the team when it sucked even if they were second tier famous people. I wouldn’t comp non fans over people like that.

But that was Game 1 – there was nothing to extend.

And I totally expect Tony Bruthers for Game 6 if it happens.

    1

There are definitely seeds that Perry planted that helped Leon grow this contender.

The Morris pick up and then bring smart enough to trade it for picks.

The Melo trade that got us off of that contract and netted us the pick that turned into Mitch.

Signing Randle who eventually turned into an all nba player, helped raise our floor and was used in the KAT trade.

Being wise and not extending KP and trading him for picks.

His biggest blunders were shoring fizdale and drafting Knox over bridges or Shai. Even if he hadn’t picked Shai, there’s a world where Leon doesn’t have to give up 5 picks to get Bridges bc he’s already in the fold.

But Perry was smart enough to realize we weren’t contenders and to stock pile some picks for us that gave Leon a lot to work with. Perry inherited a team from Jackson that had very little in assets.

The RJ pick was fine bc he was the consensus third pick in the draft. I guess Perry could have been more creative and traded down to pick up another asset but I can’t really fault him too much for that pick.

    2

thought: freaking auto-correct on android is even more frustrating than on the ipad when it comes to messing with my words…

actual post: yes, I do re-read my own posts numerous times to ensure accuracy, and yet still out comes: minute miracle instead of minor miracle…and i like to hear myself talk…

    oh well, life’s messy…fuck it…

The big set back from that time period was missing on two drafts in a row with Frank and then Knox. Why Dolan let Phil pick frank and then fire him a week later is beyond me.

beyond: she’s got a man, she’s kind of cute, holy cow is she rich…not much else comes to mind reference miss taylor swift…

    how is her music?

I think that last flagrant on Wemby was pretty important. One more and he’s ejected and suspended from the next game. So he can’t really try any of his shenanigans and he also might not play quite as hard on defense cause it’s in his head that he can’t get a flagrant.

The other key will be making sure none of our starting 5 get into foul trouble two minutes into the first quarter. This has happened to KAT, Mikal and Hart. Hopefully the NBA is done with their ref shenanigans but I’m not hopeful.

I am hopeful. Thought that the spurs won’t shoot like 80 percent from three in half of the game.

I like our chances IF the League allows this to be an evenly called game.

    that’s a good thing clarence…or, it’s a thing at least…

she brings joy to lots and lots of folks…I don’t know, I add value to like a half dozen people close to me…

she wins, and good for her…

Bruthers should not be allowed to ref another game. He was the biggest disgrace in the series.

And I’m pretty sure the Extender myth has been debunked. I think Foster is actually the league’s highest rated ref, and the person they send when they’re tired of the refs being the story and they want a clean game.

Perry inherited a team from Jackson that had very little in assets.

I’m not sure people remember how bad things were when Phil took over. It wasn’t just that we had no good trade assets, we were also missing multiple first round picks and had almost unmovable contracts.

Jackson inherited a team with JR Smith and Raymond Felton at the all time bottom of their value due to behavior, a hurt subpar Tyson Chandler that said he wanted out at a low point in his value, a bad cap position, missing multiple first round picks that would make a youth rebuild twice as difficult and an owner that insisted on keeping Mills and the existing medical staff. That left Melo who soon got hurt, never regained his best form and lost any real trade value.

Despite Phil’s multiple mistakes (Noah being the main one), he left the team in a tolerable position with KP, cap space and all our picks which Mills then immediately screwed up by giving terrible contracts to Hardaway and Ron Baker and setting us back AGAIN.

    1

No love for Obi in these alternate timelines?

Leon’s first ever draft pick. If he selects Haliburton instead, probably doesn’t pursue Brunson two years later.

Along similar lines, suppose Ainge deserves an Honorable Mention for turning down Leon’s Godfather offer for Spida.

Good morning to you all. Today can very well be the day we’ve all dreamt about and/or prayed for (word to Meek Mills)

I woke up 30 minutes ago with a pit in my stomach. Who the hell wakes up on 4 hours sleep nervous???

New Yorkers are kind but not nice, flip that around for most of the rest of the world.

everywhere else being mostly disingenuous you mean E…

geo, since you out here in SoCal with me me thinks you speak from experience 😉. I’m sooooo the fuck over the whole “nice” thing:
    1. too many times at my job, I hear of people being moved to certain positions and the first quality I hear is, “they’re nice”. 100% of the time, said person turns out to be incompetent for the role they’re put in, or the “niceness” is a disguise for ulterior motives that have little to do with truly executing the job they’ve been brought on to do.
    2. Whenever I’m in the OC.*

*I’ll explain this one later if anyone is interested in my take lol

    1

I think Ron Baker should get an honorary ring for briefly keeping spirits up around here (first with his quirky play and then with the humor of his contract).

I wish Lou Reed was still alive to slap Azaria around. Celebs just do what they want, roaming the earth freely as spectacle, and there’s nothing mortal voice actors can do about it.

Posting and Toasting used to have a field day back in the day with Mills. “GIVE!”

Gotta admit, Strat carrying water one final time for Cap’n Jackson warms the cockles of my heart.

    I love you guys.

    6

My wife* outside early this morning astride a mom and her toddler, who appeared to be around 2 years of age. He kept on mumbling something that neither his mom nor my wife could understand. Finally, mom leaned into the stroller, listened to her tot and said, ” Yes, you can watch the Knick game tonight.”
Btw, Alvie is going to get paid this off season!
    * Thanks to Alan for the Euro announcers vid of The Tip, my wife loved it.

    3

    Tommy Beer:

For Knicks fans out there that feel like they’re about to throw up, I’ll repeat what I’ve said multiple times during this incredible run: Try your best to appreciate it.

    Pressure is a privilege.

Think about all those meaningless games you sat through for 20+ years. Think back on the Isiah Era, all the awful trades, and botched draft picks. Or trying to convince yourself that Moochie Norris, Frank Ntilikina, Willy Hernangómez or Damyean Dotson would develop into reliable starters.

Talking yourself into believing Steve Francis or T-Mac might resurrect their careers in NYC. Praying for saviors via free agency, only to watch one after another spur the city. Having to root for losses during entire seasons spent taking, only to get burned in the lottery.

During those days, you’d have given anything to feel the anxiety you now can’t escape.

    3

This has happened to KAT, Mikal and Hart.

Jeez, I forgot they did it to Hart, too. Damn, we’ve been down a player all series.

Leon’s first ever draft pick. If he selects Haliburton instead, probably doesn’t pursue Brunson two years later.

Along similar lines, suppose Ainge deserves an Honorable Mention for turning down Leon’s Godfather offer for Spida.

Fair points, Gondrezick, but it’s not about building alternate timelines. It’s people who deserve a ring because they were on the team or in the organization and contributed to the construction of the team by doing something positive.

Morris was traded for two picks that ultimately turned into OG and Deuce. That’s a ring-worthy contribution. Obi turned into two meaningless seconds, so no ring for him. And absolutely definitely no Knicks ring for Danny fucking Ainge!

Gotta admit, Strat carrying water one final time for Cap’n Jackson warms the cockles of my heart.

See that’s why I asked E (and technically Hubert) to do at least one purgatory (ok technically I said mezzanine confusing the two) post if we win it all. We’re all on this generational kumbaya space here – so squashing all the beef feels… feels a bit weird in a way, yanno?

Yabu gets a ring for waiving his player option and thus facilitating the Alvie trade via the Dalen Terry and two seconds. A ring and a $10K debit card to Peter Pan Donuts

    3

Phil Jackson didn’t leave the Knicks with meaningful cap space. We had Melo, Noah, Courtney Lee Who We Could Trade For a First Round Pick Anytime We Want, Lance Thomas, and Frank Ntilikina all on the books for 2017-2018 thanks to Phil Jackson.

The cap for 2017-2018, the season after Phil was fired, was $99M. Those dudes made a combined ~$66M. They contributed little-to-nothing by that point in their careers (or in Frank’s case, ever). That’s well over half the cap absolutely frittered away. Hardaway was of course not the best use of what remained, but the damage was done.

Dude was an absolute dunce, but I will give him credit for trading the #31 pick as opposed to the #30 pick in order to salary dump Travis Outlaw, thereby allowing him to maintain “never traded a first round pick status” the same way Al Capone was only ever charged with tax evasion.

    1

John Starks jumping out of his seat and vociferously pointing at the out of bounds line on the late Stephon Castle turnover may or may not have prompted the refs to make that call. And the ball may or may not have actually been out of bounds. And Josh Hart may or may not have committed a foul on that play.

I think you gotta give a ring to Starks just to be on the safe side.

    2

I’d be happy to trot out the happyterms of yore for old-times sake, but as this Hollinger article supports, I’m not sure “purgatory” is even a thing anymore.

TLDR: This more egalitarian roster, more upset-y playoff bracket, we’re seeing in this glorious spring is looking very much like the continuation of a trend that got rolling quite a bit before.

That said, the Knicks would be the first team since the 1978 Washington Bullets to win the championship with no players that received MVP votes. Two years later, the Bullets went into purgatory and they haven’t escaped since.

    So there’s that.

(The factoid in the article that OG was last in OReb rate of all players in the series — at zero — prior to The Tip, is incredible.)

    https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7353715/2026/06/12/knicks-nba-finals-title-contention-roster-construction/

Let’s not forget the amazing reason that #31 pick was traded away (it was eventually used on Nic Claxton) so the Knicks could salary dump Travis Outlaw: it allowed the Knicks to sign Travis “The Wear Bear” Wear and incur less of a luxury tax penalty.

    Phil Jackson: moron.

Phil Jackson already has a Knicks championship ring anyway. He can’t get one for this.

Everything Tommy Beer said is true. But I still hate feeling like I’m gonna throw up.

Give Ndour a ring for making sure the Knicks didn’t get KAT until he could be serious about his game.

I come here to read this stuff… KB at it’s best! LOL

Everybody ready to be NBA Champion? They should send rings to all of us, we deserve it !! 🧡💙

But the job is not done, let’s not put the cart before the horse.
And thinking that about this, i’ll always go for hike before games, and then we win, didn’t do it for game 3. So i’m off to the mountains around me in a short bit, i’ll read the rest of the thread when i come back.

Can we give OAKAAK, native New Yorker Kemba Walker a ring for being so clearly washed we had no choice but to regard the point guard position as unsettled going into 2022?

A bit of a stretch, but I shudder to think of the domino effect of him having a semi-decent season for us…

You guys are out here giving out rings while I’m here stressing that if they lose tonight the pressure for game 6 will be insane e.

    2

I think when the series is over Silver should announce the Nets are moving to Seattle.

    2

I’m checking knicks rosters to come up with a mount rushmore scrub 5 but it’s way too hard!
    Many “botTOPm” choices!

Can we give OAKAAK, native New Yorker Kemba Walker a ring for being so clearly washed we had no choice but to regard the point guard position as unsettled going into 2022?

Sufficiently covered in the ring we’re giving to Thibs, who promptly ended his career after he had a brief dead cat bounce

Thibs actually took the dead cat and bounced it on purpose. Rather odd.

I think when the series is over Silver should announce the Nets are moving to Seattle.

Back when the Knicks were trotting out Lavor Postell and Shandon Anderson and Antonio McDyess’s shredded knee at the same time that the Nets were winning Eastern Conferences, Mike Lupica (*) wrote several times — at a time when it was politically and economically feasible and the Nets hadn’t yet built Brooklyn Pottery Barn — that the Nets should move to the Garden and become the New York Clippers.

I thought then and think now: He’s 100% right.

(*) NY sportswriter of some renown then.

In other OAKAAK news right now the last game of the Greek basketball league (series tied 2-2/winner in 5g) between OSFP and PAO.
OSFP with Fournier and Ntilikina(injured) against PAO with Jerian Grant.

I almost forgot Kostas Papanikolaou drafted by NYK in 2012!

Players taken after Jerian Grant in 2015. (And remember, we didn’t draft him ourselves, but acquired his draft rights later.)

    OAKAAK Delon Wright
    OAKAAK Bobby Portis
    Tyus Jones
    Larry Nance Jr.
    Kevon Looney
    Montrezl Harrell
    Pat Connaughton
    Norm Powell

Why am I listing this? To deal with the anxiety.

I think when the series is over Silver should announce the Nets are moving to Seattle.

i hope this happens…then I can incessantly harangue claxton about the “i never lost to them” quote for the rest of his meaningless career…

I’ve decided to make a notable exception and give one ring to a man who doesn’t fit the criteria but deserves as much credit as anyone for our success:

    Mark Cuban

    5

He also didn’t believe there would be much of a market for Brunson if he did hit free agency, privately pointing out that the teams set up to have salary cap space the next summer had all made heavy investments in young guards. Cuban believed at the time that the best deal Brunson could get in free agency was the mid-level exception, which would have been $45.1 million over four years.

I’d say give Cuban a ring, but he’s so dumb he’d probably eat it.

    https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/44320045/the-wonder-boy-jalen-brunson-tim-macmahon

Yeah Hubs. Hart had a good game one with tons of rebounds and steals and great defense. Boom two quick fouls in game 2. Mikal has a great game 2 and boom, two quick fouls in game 3. KAT was clearly going to be who we went to early in game 4 so two quick fouls on him.

If the fix is in OG will get 2 quick fouls today although he’s usually too smart to even give them a chance to do that.

If we’re giving out rings after tonight (a phrase I couldn’t have imagined saying for most of this century) then we can give another one to John Gianeli, backup center on the last Knicks championship. There’s a direct line from Gianeli to the Zach Randolph trade; various flotsam and jetsam from ZBo’s salary dump end up in other salary dumps which leads to the cap space to sign Amare which leads to the Melo trade which culminates in a trade for a 2nd round pick which turns into Mitchell Robinson.

Jalen Brunson’s true shooting percentage in the season that had just ended when Cuban pegged his value at the MLE, was .618. He shot .405 from downtown.

He could have had him for 4/55. He declined.

That might be the worst personnel decision in NBA history.

Yeah Even if they decided you couldn’t have Luka and Jalen on the same team, he would have been one of the most valuable trade chips out there. Even before he helped Dallas get to the WCF he was well worth that.

Would be great if Deuce can replay his performance in the close out game against the Sixers tonight.

    1

Has anyone mentioned yet that the Marcus Morris –> IQ –> OG series of events only happened because Morris reneged on a deal with…the Spurs?!

    4

Yeah Even if they decided you couldn’t have Luka and Jalen on the same team, he would have been one of the most valuable trade chips out there. Even before he helped Dallas get to the WCF he was well worth that.

True, but the valuable trade chip wouldn’t have been able to have been used until the NEXT season, and even though they didn’t actually MAKE a trade that season, dammit, Cuban wanted the ability to do so if he chose!

He really was THAT fucking stupid on this position. I remember it all unfolding in real time, and how stunningly dumb it was BEFORE Brunson even got here.

Do you remember where Brunson and Bridges won their second national championship?

    Yup – in San Antonio.

Also, while we’re exorcising demons, anybody want to rank their top 3 most painful Knick things of this century? Like, does “finishing one spot behind where Steph Curry was picked” really qualify? Or does it have to be something the Knicks actively did, like taking Kevin Knox Sr over Mikal and SGA? Or the Curry trade? Or the Bargnani trade? Or the Ron Baker player option? Or…

Let’s get this shit all out of our system, fellas.

I would guess Brunson was referring to the GSW over CLE in those finals. They won their 3rd game on June 14, 2015 and would go on to close it out in 6.

Meanwhile, Italian 7’3″ C Luigi Suigo has withdrawn from draft and will play for Villanova.

Couldn’t go for a hike on the mountains, because the risk of fire is too high and it’s not allowed.
Opted for a walk on the road down the mountain, that brought me to a green park with a small river, and then I’ll get back. I hope this can have the same effect on our wins! 😉

Alan, for us Old Heads, you got to include the 1990’s when the Knicks had really contending teams and never climbed to the top-The Reggie Miller choke sign game needs to be exorcised.

If we’re doing that, Bo, then there’s also Hakeem’s fingernail blocking the Starks game winner in Game 6, the Miami suspensions, Greg Anthony’s shirt from the Phoenix brawl…

Forget Scott Foster, the other ref to watch out for is Tyler Ford. He was a co-conspirator with Tony Brothers in game 2 and is on the crew tonight.

Please don’t be about the refs this game. If Spurs win outright fair and square, fine. But if we get a game 2 repeat I’ll going to Adam Silver’s house and throwing bricks.

Bench is key tonight. If Deuce and Shamet rediscover their shot and we get contributions from Bridges, I think we win easily. KAT staying out of foul trouble is obviously big too but having the bench be a factor will open up things for everyone

The KAT foul trouble cheat code is the most troubling weapon the refs have in their pocket. KAT might not be the best player on the team but he’s the most important.

KD/Kyrie to BKN. At that point, after all the planning and nine years after suffering abject rejection in The Decision, and with Dolan pulling his “They didn’t reject us, we rejected them” bullshit, things seemed utterly hopeless.

Carmelo Anthony passes to Jared Jeffries to lose against the Celtics in the playoffs. Not so much the loss as the fact we went to Jared fucking Jeffries to attempt to attempt a game-winning shot in the playoffs. He predictably fumbles the ball.

    Aaron Nesmith.

    Losing Jeremy Lin.

    HM:
    * Jaime Jaquez injures Julius Randle and every subsequent injury.
    * Everything Andrea Bargnani.

My most recent painful moment was Hibbert’s block on Melo/elimination by indy
Made me cry like Candy Candy…

What’s he referring to in that tweet, Marechal?

I have no idea. It couldn’t have been the NBA finals.

Edit: ah. ptmilo had the answer.

Roy “rule of verticality” Hibbert. Who, after that series, went on to do basically nothing.

KD/Kyrie to BKN. At that point, after all the planning and nine years after suffering abject rejection in The Decision, and with Dolan pulling his “They didn’t reject us, we rejected them” bullshit, things seemed utterly hopeless.

i agree with this. Not only did they reject the Knidks, they joined our rivals across the river. My son was so despondent I thought I was going to have to hire a therapist.

But that was another low moment in Knicks history that in hindsight was a major bullet dodged.

My personal top 5, which reflects my subjective pain contemporaneously and is thus not a rigorous empirical analysis:

    1. Not matching the Lin offer sheet because the best experience I had ever had as a Knicks fan to that point was officially over

    2. Game 1 of the 2025 ECFs because I don’t have to explain this one

    3. Game 6 of the 2013 ECSFs because the first unambiguously good Knicks team I had ever rooted for was eliminated with an uncertain future

    4. The announcement of the Joakim Noah contract because our supposed savior of a POBO revealed himself beyond a reasonable doubt to be arguably even dumber than his predecessors

    5. The announcement that Randle was having season ending surgery in 2024 because damn it we had a chance

HM, no order: Bargnani trade announcement, losing NateRob to the cap space pursuit (understood it, but was very sad), The Decision, 2019 draft lottery, Mega Max Melo + NTC announcement, drafting Knox, being in MSG when Trae Young put Frank Ntilikina on skates.

    1

I was kind of sad when KD and Kyrie shunned us but I expected it by that point and was also optimistic about our options to pivot with all the cap space. Sure enough, that very offseason there were multiple opportunities to take on bad contracts for first-round picks.

But then we signed a bunch of power forwards instead, but at least one of them was Randle and another was the Quickley Getter.

After the missed bunny and subsequent bail out by OG, I expect Josh to set a finals record for rebounds by a guard.

“But then we signed a bunch of power forwards instead, but at least one of them was Randle”

Julius was way better than the market thought and then JB was WAY better than the market thought and so fortune finally smiled on the team after 20+ years in the hopeless wilderness. That was the turning point.

    My worst 5 are

    5. Ewing misses the fingerroll
    4. Not re-signing Lin
    3. Game 1 2025 ECF
    2. Eddy Curry trade
    1. 1997 suspensions

Once we got good again, the regrets from the past went away, and i prepared myself for a decade of hard fought playoffs action like we had in the 90s. Frankly i just wanted us to be perennial ECF contenders, maybe go to the Finals once. But things are going much better than i expected, and that’s amazing.

Getting players that turn out WAY better than the market thinks means 2 more things besides luck.
First That your scouters know their job
and Second that you have created the right conditions for the talents to grow.

    1

Hello from San Antonio! Getting here did in fact suck. Home game in Texas! Let’s go Knicks!

    5

Cool, NahNahNah! Do report in regularly to give us the local flavor…

    (Ditto for anyone else there…)

    1

while we’re exorcising demons, anybody want to rank their top 3 most painful Knick things of this century?

    1. Halliburton’s shot
    2. All the shots Nesmith hit during the eternal 5 minutes that preceded Halliburton’s shot
    3. The overtime period after Halliburton’s shot

    Bonus demons:

    1. Julius Randle exiting the Heat game with a shoulder injury
    2. The first quarter of game 7 vs Indiana at MSG in 2024

    In no particular order….

    1. Haliburton’s shot in game 1 last year
    2. Hibbert’s block on Melo
    3. jR elbow and suspension
    4. Billups getting hurt at the end of the Boston game 1in the 2011 playoffs followed by Amare injuring himself with a trick dunk before game 2.
    5. Randle’s shoulder injury

Other honorable mentions. The first half of game 1 against Miami in 2012 where we got destroyed and Shump got injured. Missing the 2014 playoffs by one game – that team struggled all season but then went on a great run to close it out only to come up one game short. Atlanta game 1 in the 2021 playoffs.

Yankees currently have Judge, Stanton and Grisham on the IL. On a related note they have 1 fucking hit thru 7 innings today.

The Knicks extending their series would be the best possible thing to happen for the NY baseball teams to keep the focus off of them for as long as possible…

Just watched a video of the Spurs radio announcers doing the last few minutes of the last game. A very different vibe…

    1

Saw that last night Raven, fucking great seeing Sean Elliott basically speechless.

    1

This series is not getting extended and not going back to NY. This team is poised and ready

    Link please?

Helluva win by the Yankees today! Knicks can finish it tonight I’m now ready to just concentrate on the Yankees for next few months 😂

It’s game day so here is my mandatory post! Watching at Radio City Music Hall tonight. Brunson will have another Brunson game, and Towns will leave his imprint. Let’s goooooooo!!

    1

    Most pain:

    Hali game 1
Trae young in the We Here 2020 playoffs
    Og Hammy and Hart injuries
    Melo blocked by Hibbert
Amare punching glass vs the Heat
Drafting Frank over OG Anunoby and Josh Hart lol
Debating the greatness of the likes of Jorts and Ron Baker and Trey Burke

    Gods please exorcise my demon:

1994. Finals G7. John Starks 2-18, 0-11 from three. We lose by six.

    @robertsilverman.bsky.social‬

Everyone who spent a considerable amount of time convincing themselves that Cole Aldrich could be a starting NBA center… stand and be counted!

    1

    How about Willy Hernangomez!

Only we that endured that time know that Willy should be read as “Billy”. 😉

    1

I think Jorts proved his greatness when he won Chinese League MVP. How about when Balkman was going to be the perfect hustle role player? Or when Anthony Randolph was going to be the next KG?

Even though I appreciated how he played there were way too many Lance Thomas minutes back in the day.

The Brazilians in NYC right now are as hyped as the Knicks fans, and there’s a lot of them. This is one helluva scene

The Brazilians in NYC right now are as hyped as the Knicks fans, and there’s a lot of them. This is one helluva scene

In a bar with some right now. I definitely agree.

So many emotions for today. Let’s do it! Very excited and nervous for the game. Hopeful we can close it out. Go Knicks.

I was at the Charles Smith game. No worse moment. That was the year where it felt possible. The only one.

In London. Going to try to watch in my room and make jet lag work for me.

    1

    Tough moments for me.
    -Charles Smith misses layups
    -1997 suspensions
-losing to Rockets in game 6 and 7
    -Game 1 loss to Pacers

To be fair there are alot of tough moments for Knicks fans. Even though the 90s were great bc we were contenders it also didn’t result in a title. That was hard.

Glad you touched down in time, Owen!

Let’s win this one for the whole European contingent, who has been missing sleep for way too long now…

Let’s win this one for the whole European contingent, who has been missing sleep for way too long now…

    Make it so, gentlemen.

Wanna say I’ve been a lurker for over 15 years. Reading this blog just about everyday has deepened my knowledge of basketball and connection to the Knicks (haven’t lived in NY since the last finals). I feel like I know so many of you even though you don’t know me.

I grew up going to Knicks games in the 90s so while the past 2.5 decades have been painful I always had those core memories. As was said the other day by llcoolbp, what has been so special about this run has been the connection it’s fostered with my pre-teen sons. They’re sadly committed to the Knicks, but happily we’ll always have this to share. The older one will often ask during games “what is the blog saying?”

Today has been a long, slow day. Whatever happens I’m grateful I have you all to be following along with…0-0 and one more!
