Deuce-Deuce!
Apologies, I’m going to be in effing Disneyland for this game. What a drag (I hope).
I’ll be performing in a show in Brooklyn, and the bar just has one tiny tv, so we should be safe for this one.
Happy Please Don’t Fuck Up The Draft Again Day to those who celebrate!
It sounds like the Giants will do the smart thing at 3 by just drafting whichever of Hunter or Carter falls to them, and then they will try to do the potentially dumb thing of trading back into the first round — giving up much of their capital from the middle rounds that are supposed to be this draft’s sweet spot — to try to take a QB who probably isn’t nearly as good as any of the guys they passed on last year.
Fingers crossed that, as with the Matthew Stafford and Aaron Rodgers stuff, an outside force saves Joe Schoen from himself.
Just a hopeful calming word on the Giants. They have had the opportunity to reach for QBs in the past and have resisted that temptation. I think Daboll is pretty confident in the traits he sees for a successful QB, so i don’t think they’ll be drafting one out of desperation.
We took Daniel Jones with the 6th pick in the draft so I won’t be relieved until the pick is in and it’s not Sanders.
This pick is essentially what we traded Saquon Barkley for (we’d probably be picking 9th or 10th if we had signed him). If we use it on a blue chip prospect like Carter or Hunter, then it’s all good. If we use it on a QB that no one thinks is worth a premium pick, John Mara is not going to want to be out in society for a while.
I am personally tired of using so many premium picks on the offensive side of the ball. Give me Carter, Thibodeaux, Burns, and Lawrence wrecking teams and I might actually want to watch a Giants game again.
And I agree with Alan that we should stay put and use all our picks. We have too many needs.
i wont mind if they end up with sanders provided that they take either hunter or carter first
well we’re favored with a 1.5 spread tonite so theres that
The noise today is speaking strongly towards this result:
1)Giants take Carter at 3, unless the Browns improbably pass on Hunter, in which case the Giants would take him.
2)Giants trade some of their mid-round picks to trade back into the first round to get Jaxson Dart, whom Daboll reportedly loves. And since Daboll seems to me to have established himself as an empty suit whose opinions aren’t to be trusted, I’m not thrilled with this part of the plan.
daboll opions notwithstanding i think dart might be as good as or better than sanders so that would be a outstsnding result
I think get 3 QBs get drafted in the first round. Now way Pittsburgh passes on one. The question is who do they take, Dart or Sanders? (Or maybe, which one goes first?)
As a Miami alumnus I’ve been too disheartened to look into the draft all that much ever since Drew Lock decided he didn’t want us to get Cam. Until I’m proven wrong my assumption will be that the Giants will continue to muddle along as an unexciting, middling-to-bad team.
Sort of a no-brainer for the Giants to just take Carter at 3. And if someone trades up to 2 for Carter, take Hunter, although it would be hilarious if they took Jeanty.
That said, I hope Jeanty falls to my Bears. Jets should probably take an OT.
J-E-T_S……..jets, jets, jets
this is usually the only exciting day of the year for a jet fan…i think we do warren, membo, graham or walker…i would be happy with any of those…
I read the reason Giants want to trade into end of 1st rd to draft a QB instead of waiting and taking one at 34 is because 1st rd picks get an extra 5th year team option which 2nd rounders don’t get. Don’t know how accurate that information is though.
interesting if browns take hunter at 2 and then reunite him with sanders that would be a great move
It’s a mix of the fifth-year option and fear that Pittsburgh, Cleveland, or some other equally QB-hungry team will take their guy before the 34th pick rolls around. If they felt Dart, Sanders, and, say Jalen Milroe were more or less equal, maybe they would wait. But it sounds like Daboll is all in on Dart, for good or for ill.
Sanders seems to be falling too far in a lot of these mock drafts. I wish the Raiders wouldn’t have acquired Geno Smith and would just use the #6 pick on Sanders. Two years from now we’re still gonna be mediocre and will still need a QB.
I woke up this morning hoping to read some good old fashioned doom and gloom, with a little bit of premium Thibs bashing on the side. So I come here and, what?!?, it’s just football football football. I want a refund for my one $2 patreon donation from 6 1/2 years ago! This site can stay broken if this is the best you can offer.
Giving up the third pick in the third round so you can get a 5th year option on a prospect who has a slim chance of being good in 5 years is so stupid that I totally believe it’s accurate.
I would love for the Giants to get Dart in the 2nd round but it’s much more important for them to get as many good players in the door as possible. This team clearly is not on a one-year plan, and there is a 100% probability that they can draft a QB as good as Dart next year.
Idk football in-depth, but I agree with Hubie. If you’re not getting a can’t-miss QB prospect, just wait and grab a guy later. Ewers or Howard in round 5 are totally cromulent. You never know which of these guys will pan out. Plus, Dart seems decent, but Pro Day should never move the needle that much… big mistake that teams apparently like to keep making.
Yeah this is bullshit.
On the other hand, what could be more doom and gloom than the team being completely ignored on the day of our most important game so far this season?
Team pessimism was clearly right — this ship be sinking.
Also there’s a Hubie rule of thumb: do not draft a QB in round 2 if you have a bad O-line. Draft the best lineman available instead. There’s always good ones at the top of round 2. And I guarantee that the QB you draft a year after drafting a good lineman will be better than the QB you draft with a shitty line.
at 8 tonite i am going to care much more about the knicks game than i am about the nfl draft i would rather see what happned there after everything already shook out feel no need to watch it unfold live
at least jaxon dart has a cool qb name
Interesting way to sell tickets https://x.com/jharris727/status/1915167689904923031/photo/1
Pags completely on form, deciding that posts about the NFL draft on draft night are “doom and gloom”.
I went over to Giantsblogger and all they wanna talk about is the damn Knicks game tonight smh
Pags is right about one thing, though. Tonight is the most important game of the season. Feels like if we lose tonight, the season is over.
Do or die, guys. Time to step up.
I’ve thought if we lose in the first round, Thibs is fired. But my buddy said he doesn’t think so. He thinks Leon knows he messed up the vibes/chemistry this off season and if we lose in the first round, Leon is going to try and pivot/retool this summer instead of firing Thibs.
My question, though, is how to do that?
A coaching change seems the easier low hanging fruit way to improve the team. After that, it gets harder unless you’re able to get a really good haul for a few of the key guys.
We’ll be down 2-1, so the season won’t be over. And seriously, if the team can’t come back from being down 2-1, then great, because Leon will have to make changes.
This team couldn’t come back from being 0-0
I know it technically won’t be over, lol. But we’ve lost 6 of the 8 quarters in the series so far and lost all the regular season games against them too. Regular season doesn’t really matter because we were short people but so far they’ve mostly been in control except for one huge run by us in game 1.
That being said, the other way to look at it is they fell apart in game one and almost fell apart in game two. So we could easily be up 2-0. But give a young team that is also physical some confidence and you can get in trouble quick.
So yes, the season is on the line tonight. Maybe we eek out another win before losing the series even if we lost tonight but if we go down tonight, I’m guessing we lose this series.
If we lose tonight I will start having full blown flashbacks to Pacers Knicks 2013. There’s already a lot of similarities:
– outplayed in 7 of 8 quarters at MSG.
– one glorious run over 2 games earned a 1-1 split
– once prolific offense bogged down in relentless hero ball.
– getting killed on the boards.
– stretch 5 who isn’t being used properly
– And Deuce = Pablo. There’s so much evidence we’re better with him on the floor but the coach’s singular focus is height.
It’s sort of madness to fit the players around the coach instead of vice versa, but if we do lose to Detroit and Leon keeps Thibs, I think the changes are obvious: Either you put KAT at the 4 next to a rim protector (Mitch or a better shooting version of him) or you trade KAT for a variety of other parts.
It’s tough to choose which. KAT has been great offensively, but it’s hard having two negative defenders out there regardless of what position KAT plays.
Also, it’s not like Mikal isn’t a problem too. Either he has to become a real POA defender or move him to the 3 and we trade for another POA guy who is really good.
It also wouldn’t hurt to replace Mitch with someone who can hit an outside shot (obviously).
I don’t want to be too crass, but don’t discount Mara’s happy dream that he can reel in another Manning next year. I think that thought will reduce the pressure to reach for a QB this year.
IS there a world where Mikal plus wahtever picks we have left gets us Kessler? Seems like that would be as good of an option as any. Start Kessler, play KAT at the 4, move Hart to the bench, start McBride.
BRunson, McBride, OG, KAT, Kessler with Kolek, Hart and Mitch as the first three off the bench? Plus a couple of vet snipers like Cam?
Knicks just have to win 1 game in Detroit so no if they lose tonight the season is far from over. Losing tonight and Sunday however…
I realize a lot of people in Knicks land are down on Bridges, but I’m still not one of them. Just because we overpaid and are not using him well on either side doesn’t mean we should trade him. I’d way rather correct the real problems first. The original cost is irrelevant now and going forward. It’s over.
IMO, Mikal is worth more than Kessler.
If we gave up picks on top of Mikal I might have to turn in my Knicks card for awhile like I did after the Melo trade. 😉
I don’t have any issue with that lineup, but maybe we should try Mitch and Towns some more before committing to Towns at PF.
Calling Thibs! “We know Towns at C doesn’t work well defensively (as did the T-Wolves), especially with Brunson at PG. So either play the bigs together or trade Towns!
Spending 5 picks for Mikal and then having to package even more picks to land an okay center who is basically a worse version of Mitch is certainly a choice.
Whatever we want to do, the Mikal trade means we won’t have enough assets to do it. We simply incinerated 5 picks for a guy worth maybe 1. It’s unrecoverable and the only play is to firesale and rebuild.
Ha! I like that. “Now, if they lose the next three games, then yes, that would not be good.” 🙂
Nah, they lose tonight the season is over. Detroit will smell blood and if we lose tonight it means Thibs, Brunson and the team didn’t adjust.
They might eek out one more win at home but lose tonight, it’s over.
If we lose tonight, Knicks in 7
If we win tonight, Knicks in 6
(removes rose colored glasses)
Let’s be clear if we lose tonight, based on all the articles i’ve been reading the whole Knicks world will be going to Pags in a handbasket!
The reason why I’m so confident has nothing to do with the skill/talent level of our players vs. theirs. At some point in the playoffs, that becomes irrelevant in a series when momentum goes towards one team. If Detroit wins tonight with them being a young team and the confidence they will have and the supposedly bad vibes on our team, I just don’t have confidence in our guys pulling it together enough to then win 3 out of 4 games.
If they win tonight, though, then I think those concerns about the locker room energy being bad are probably overblown and, so then I would say that we have more talent so we will win.
Knicks in 7 against LAC
Woke up truly confident today!
😉
I wouldn’t expect major adjustments tonight. The first inflection point in a 7 game series is usually game 4 when a team down 2-1. At 1-1 it’s just clean up the mistakes and play your best game.
Keep in mind I don’t consider “get Towns shots” to be an adjustment. It’s what we’ve been doing all year.
Are you intentionally trying to summon the ghost of Doogie? (-:
mikal for poetl straight up
https://x.com/NBA_NewYork/status/1915429605135024476
Putting aside the issue of whether we should trade him (I find it pointless to debate without a baseline return package), I’m not on board with the idea that we’re not “using” Mikal well on either side.
I am on board with the idea as it relates to KAT, as while at the end of the day the buck stops with the player, there are some fairly obvious coaching related decisions we can make with regards to him. We’ve literally seen him take more threes, set more ball screens, etc. It can be done.
But how exactly are we leading Mikal astray? He made the conscious decision to stop trying to draw fouls due to some galaxy brained theory about the playoffs, and also simply did not hit enough shots.
On defense, we gave him a simple, though difficult, task because, well, we thought we were trading for a very good perimeter defender–defend the point of attack with his long ass arms and nominal mobility. He mostly underwhelmed.
The way I see it, Mikal needs to make the old “play better” adjustment.
Man Zach Lowe just murdered Thibs on his podcast.
He didn’t throw dirt on the Knicks, just killed them for how they played the first two games while suggesting approximately 20 ways off the top of his head that Thibs could have responded better. And of course pointing out how insane it is that Thibs wasn’t prepared to be defended the way he’s been defended all year.
On offense, the expectations seem to be that he should be playing at an all-star level (to a large extent based on the price paid).
First, he was never an all star. He was considered an elite role player.
Second, playing at all-star caliber level on offense is close to impossible when you are the 3a or 3b option with OG and you have a score first PG dribbling around looking to create for himself first (and has the green light from the coach to do it).
IMO, he’s a terrific 3rd option that can step it up and do more on occasion, but he’s never going to meet the expectations based on the price. IMO he would be more consistent and more efficient if he was playing in an more organized offense instead of often standing around watching Brunson.
On defense, he’s often given the POA assignment against some really quick small PGs not because that’s his specialty on defense, but because our PG can’t guard anyone and he’s the least bad option for that job. The only good option is Deuce and he doesn’t start (another discussion) IMO, he’s supposed be guarding 2s or 3s with some switching ability .
I also don’t think he’s a bad fit.
I think the problems are Brunson, Towns and Thibs.
Brunson and Towns are a bad fit because they are both negative defenders and Thibs and Brunson have too much of the offense geared towards Brunson ISO (which is extremely valuable when we need it, but not the right way to run an offense for 36-40 minutes).
I thought the offense looked a lot better when Brunson was out. It wasn’t as potent because we didn’t have our #1 option when we actually needed him to get a basket, but it ran better for a lot of the time and got the others more involved.
I didn’t listen to it yet, but I’d be willing to bet I agree with at least 90% of it. Zach Lowe is very good. Thibs has generally had a bad year, but it has become so apparent recently he’s losing people that have been supporters for years.
have some bland mikal takes but going to wait until we win to spit them. natural hedge for you guys bc if we lose i won’t be in the mood and you can all keep being wrong tax free.
Respectfully, strat, this is a complete straw man. Nobody expects Mikal to be All-star level on offense. What we did expect was basically what he’s done this year plus:
-Not having the worst FTA rate in the NBA
-Not having his worst 3p% year since 2019
He was expected to be a tertiary shot creator and contribute to a credible 4-5 out offense. Instead he’s avoided the rim like the plague, and it’s not like we’ve had Mitch in there clogging the lane, and reinvented the wheel on his shot such that he’s now a below average 3p shooter while also lowering his volume. That fucking sucks.
His midrange game has actually been pretty nice. If he’d just undo the above two developments that nobody asked for there would be nothing to complain about offensively.
Defensively, he’s just massively overrated and is demonstrably not elite in any aspect. If it was just Brunson and Towns holding him back we wouldn’t have seen out defense consistently look much better with Deuce or Wright at the PoA. It’s not just that he can’t guard pocket rocket Maxey type guards either because he can’t guard the wing-sized Cunningham either.
All this adds up to him being massively overrated, an average NBA player for a superstar price. Paying 5x 1RP for the final piece is something you do when you have OKC level asset surplus, precisely because of the risk of what has happened to us. He’s locked us into mediocrity for the rest of the decade.
yikes, not an encouraging sign with the refs tonight…
win, lose or – there is no draw – tonight’s game is an important step for the team…
I’m feeling pretty detached from the outcome…
if it had to lay down odds for the game tonight, all things considered, i’d call it even…
I agreed with Al that it’s really the two games together that matter, not just game 3.
Except then ptmilo said we’ll only get his definitive Bridges’ take if we win tonight. So now it feels critical.
FWIW I appreciate the 7pm start. 7:00 >>>> 7:30.
hubie since it’s just us girls and the thread is about to end forever let’s just get out there the only thing that hasn’t been said enough. for all the fair criticism of playcalling, some lineup fails and jalen’s second half life choices, a huge fulcrum is that kat must play better. he was absolutely horrendous off the ball in game two, in some case ambling into the general vicinity of josh hart instead of moving with urgency and finding a spot. sure, it is incumbent upon jalen and thibs to maximize kat given his known deficiencies. but he is not typically that godawful off ball. contra sapolsky, he does actually possess a modicum of agency and can in fact play better than that. he needs to. with stewart out again it would criminal for him to wander around for 70 possessions unless called upon to post tobias.
