Brandon Jennings is quickly becoming my least favorite Knick. He wants to pound his chest and make flashy plays but doesn’t realize that what New Yorkers love most on their basketball team is effort and competence. He’s the worst defender on a bad defensive team by a country mile and he’s a terrible shooter. At this point I’m over the assists because he is without a doubt a net negative on the court more times than not. Emmanuel Mudiay torched him last night. It’s ridiculous. I don’t want him back next year.

Jennings is being badly exposed as a starter. Yes, he’s terrible on defense. Easily beaten and simply cannot, or will not, stay engaged through screens.

He’s okay as an energy guy and passer off the bench, but that’s about it.

The problem is Rose. He’s gotta get and stay on the court, or the Knicks needs to somehow move on from him.

Cheer up! After last night’s loss, Willy’s WS/48 is now .108, crossing the .100 barrier for the first time. Only one turnover in 28 minutes! His WS/48 is still suffering from all those astronomical turnovers early on, but his elite December turnover rate suggests he’s adjusting real well to the pro game. Freed Willy is rapidly becoming a killer whale. Look at him compared to 7ft Poeltl who ranks #2 in WS/48. I like Willy’s #’s better; he rates to be at least an above average rotation player in our future. I’m worried but not that worried about his defense because I think a proper system and high BB-IQ will somewhat mitigate his lack of athleticism. I always recall what SVG said about Redick’s D, that he’s not athletic at all but he’s always in the right place in the system and stats never reflect that. Amare and Bargs would be two good opposite examples. THANKS CLARENCE GAINES!

Willy, O’Quinn, and Plumlee should probably be our depth at the 5. I like Joakim Noah but he’s probably more valuable to another team.

The best thing that could happen to this team is for Rose to be out for season. Not only would that preempt us extending him but it would improve our chance of being in the lottery. Think about our future in 3 years this way: we need 2 or 3 really good players and 5-6 above average players. KP probably falls in the first category and Willy in the second one.

How are we gonna find the others especially when the new CBA makes it nigh impossible now to sign a really good free agent? We’ve gotta be in the lottery this summer and maybe next as well to land a really good player. At the same time we could maybe add a couple of above average rotation players through trades. Thibs needs solid veterans on his team; a Lee for Pek/Jones might be possible. I doubt Thibs would trade a young vet like Rubio and Thib’s high pick Dunn is getting most of reserve minutes. Jones has played well in limited minutes; he’s the kind of smart player we should want in our future rotation. Thibs might also be interested in Lopez…..oh wait. Its gonna be hilarious when Thibs trades his 1st round pick for Lopez and Grant! THANKS PHIL! But KOQ and Jennings might be attractive to some team. Don’t despair, we’re headed in the right direction. The Mavs, 76ers, Nets have a large lead on us but there’s still a chance we could catch them. Never underestimate a Phil Jackson crafted team in this regard – there’s recent history here. Let’s just hope our rooks KP and Willy don’t spoil it.

There is a new scapegoat with every loss: Jennings was a very pleasant surprise until he was asked to be better than he is. And it’s his fault, of course! Not the fault of those expecting too kuch from him.

Now Hernangomez is on his way to be crowned savior – but give him starting roles in a couple of losses and he will become a bust.

Rose is sorely miss as his back sorely bothers him. When we lose, he plays better in our collective fantasy.

What is Melo nowadays? Last night he was a hero. But he has been pretty disastrous most of the time. Maybe he needs to play evety other game?

Is Noah really declining from all-star to all-scrub? Should we have seen it coming?

Even Porzingis was feeling the heat last night!

Point: we are a badly constructed team and this is how bad teams play. It’s no particular player’s fault.

#12 on offense + #26 on defense = below average team

We’ve played about 1/3 of the season now, and that’s where we’re at. Unless that defense gets radically better, this team will continue to be mediocre.

Rose isn’t tradeable unless you take longer term salary back. He’s making $21M this year.

Damn, when did the Raptors become the league’s best offense by a whole point of ORtg? Is there some anomalous weirdness going on there or are they really that good?

I’m not sure what we can do to get the defense significantly better.

Well, Kurt Rambis is on the case so things ought to turn around very quickly

I’m not sure what we can do to get the defense significantly better.

Get better players, instead of deeply flawed one-trick ponies.

Melo can score, but can’t defend. Same with Porzingis and Rose. Noah can semi-defend, but can’t score. Jennings can’t do either consistently.

The rest of the roster can’t put two decent games together.

In other words, the team is always leaking somewhere because all the parts (except for an improving Porzingis) are defective in some way.

A bunch of less-capable JR Smiths, looking good 1/3 of the time.

I want to say Noah’s inability to play big minutes is why the defense is so bad, but it’s mostly our guards cannot stop penetration. Brandon Jennings being culprit #1 and Rose isn’t much better. Courtney Lee plays defense with his hands too much and has been mostly overrated as a defender. We don’t have a guy like Tyson Chandler back there anymore and that means we need to do a better job as a team. Carmelo Anthony plays too close to the basket and that allows for teams to shoot open 3s from the wing. I think our best defensive unit would be Rose, Lee, Thomas, Melo, and KP. That would probably be our best offensive unit too, but the strength of our team is at the 5.

Hopefully our offense gets better because the defense is doomed to be bad.

Sheesh. The constant negativity here is so absurdly obnoxious. People-who-probably-cried-at-their-own-birthday-parties level. We used to have so much more humor. There’s a reason other sites are booming.

Damn, when did the Raptors become the league’s best offense by a whole point of ORtg? Is there some anomalous weirdness going on there or are they really that good

i think there’s some air in there. even though DDR seems like the obvious improvement, Toronto is shooting 40% from 3 which leads the league. in particular, Lowry is shooting 46% from 3 and is 36% in his career. If he was shooting 3s at his career average their ORTG would drop all the way to 9th in the league, maybe a bit better if they rebounded a few of his hypothetical misses. They are toward the bottom of the league in assisted 3s so there’s probably a lot of noise in there. the DDR production has been impressive, though. 57% TS on 28.6/36 vs a career for 53% and 20/36.

    What team would that be?

Noah making double what he’s worth and playing 20 mpg is not the worst of our problems.

I think that all of the other 29 teams in the league would stay away from Joakim’s contract but perhaps a Ricky Rubio swap makes the most sense? Two injury prone guys on the decline who need to get out of the way in order to move younger guys up the depth charts. NY needs the PG depth. Minny needs the front court depth and that “voice in the locker room” stuff.

The constant negativity here is so absurdly obnoxious. We used to have so much more humor. There’s a reason other sites are booming.

What about making positive contributions of your own instead of engaging in further negativity by criticizing those who criticize the team?

    Positive contribution:

Two cannibals eating a clown. One says ‘Does this taste funny to you?’….

Well, clearly Sunday is not a day of rest from pessimism for Theo. Not that I am more optimistic but let’s keep the Sabbath cheery here. This is my day off from thinking dark thoughts about Dolan, Melo and Phil.

Willy was good. The turnover situation has to turn around, he just seems too intelligent out there to continue coughing it up so frequently.

Even if we aren’t that good there are a lot of things to get excited about on this team at least. Big change from years past.

Hard to imagine any team trading for Noah or any scenario where we don’t get back something even worse.

Objectivity is pessimism to the deluded. The average Knicks fan deserves the shitty dream Dolan sells him every year.

“Why isn’t Noah as good as we need him to be, mama?”

The Knicks play a handful of poor road games without DRose and somehow the answer is to blame and to trade one DRose. Only on Knickerblogger.nyet

Not having a legitimate third option when your point guards are Derrick Rose and Brandon Jennings is a huge structural flaw and is being exposed as such. If we dip below .500 I hope Phil’s ego doesn’t get in the way of the tank.

Rumored trade on (whatever that is):

“Under this rumored deal, the New York Knicks will let go of Joakim Noah, Lance Thomas and Sasha Vujacic. In return they will receive Rudy Gay from the Sacramento Kings and Nikola Pekovic and Cole Aldrich from the Minnesota Timberwolves.
The Sacramento Kings will get Ricky Rubio from the Minnesota Timberwolves and Lance Thomas from the New York Knicks in exchange for Rudy Gay and Ben McLemore.
And lastly, the Minnesota Timberwolves will obtain Joakim Noah and Sasha Vujacic from the New York Knicks and Ben McLemore from the Sacramento Kings in exchange for Ricky Rubio, Nikola Pekovic and Cole Aldrich.
Based on the proposed deal, it looks like a win-win situation for all three teams. So don’t be surprised if this deal pushes through.”

If Horny truly benched O’Quinn because of that ill-advised 3 point attempt early in the shot clock last night then maybe he is the one who could get traded. His value is definitely high right now.

I did read somewhere that Lance Thomas can’t be traded until Jan. 15th because he signed a new contract recently. I wonder if the same rule also applies to Noah.

hey theo…that cannibal stuff was some good shit – i’m gonna steal that 🙂

this kinda feels eerily similar to last year…looked good for awhile – then the wheels fell off…

we won a lot of close games at home this year…at times we’ve looked really good…

pretty obvious we can’t perform with out an nba averageish starting point guard…

it sucks that our best option might be in the lottery (crap shoot that the draft is)…who wants another 30 or less win season…

let’s hope rose makes it out there on tuesday…

    g-men showing out at least…

“Jeff Hornacek Admits Underestimating Impact Of Derrick Rose”

“Jeff Hornacek admits he may have underestimated the impact of Derrick Rose as Brandon Jennings doesn’t command the same attention of defenses.

“It sure looked like it. Brandon has the ability to drive in there too,” the coach said. “But I think Derrick’s finishes really draws guys into the lane. And then we’re able to kick out from that. Brandon will dribble around and throw it out to somebody. But I’m not sure other teams are as concerned with Brandon finishing at the basket as they are with Derrick.”

We just have to steadily make smart choices draft after draft. They don’t have to be spectacular star type choices but they do have to contribute something of value to the team. Willy Hernangomez has shown that we can pick in the 2nd round and add major value.

what do you think of John Wall for Knicks

def, for sum lottery protected 2nd rounders and maybe Lance? I think that’s giving up too much tho

i think the defense will eventually become better… although maybe not significantly better… i think hornacek’s slowly figuring out that porzingis needs to play C as most 4th quarter lineups have him out there with melo at the 4…

and young bigs usually struggle with the rotating and helping portion of defense… it requires awareness in following what’s going on with the ball as well as where your man is…. and bigs do much of the heavy lifting on defense….

as kp, koq and wily play more together it’ll get better but i’m not convinced rambis is the right guy to get these guys to above average…

I saw KP take 2 hook shots last night that brought back memories of Kareem Abdul Jabbar. He had great form and made both of them. I hope he continues to use that shot on a regular basis because it’s unstoppable. I’ve messaged him to give him my advice and enclosed a YouTube video of Jabbar destroying his opponents with that one shot.

@44 I agree completely. His form on those 2 sky hook shots was great and that shot is really unstoppable for him on the inside. I hope he watches the Jabbar video that I sent to him.

I wonder if we could make a play for Boogie Cousins even with all of his recent problems. He’s a cancer but would Noah, Lance and Jennings get him?

The Kings will get better offers… Boogie has too much talent, a desperate team with better assets like Boston or even Dallas or the Lakers would probably put something on the table far superior than that package.

Santa Cruz Warriors trade for Cleanthony Early in three-team deal
By Adam Johnson Updated: December 18, 2016

“The Santa Cruz Warriors have traded for former New York Knicks guard Cleanthony Early as part of a three-team deal involving the Westchester Knicks and the Texas Legends, league sources tell D-League Digest.
Along with Early, Santa Cruz will receive the returning player rights to Nick Covington from Westchester, and Ronnie Aguilar from Texas.
Westchester will receive Courtney Fells from Texas as well as the returning rights to Justin Martin from Texas. Fells, who has fallen out of the rotation after the recent acquisitions of Pierre Jackson, Tony Wroten and Quincy Acy, is averaging 7.7 points and 2.9 rebounds in 27 minutes per contest this season for Texas.”

I’m not sure how good those guys we got back are, but it’s good to see D League trades happening. It’s looking like the NBA is getting better with the farm system.

I don’t know how much anybody here follows college ball, but Shamorie Ponds has been playing excellent ball for St. John’s. If he comes out we need to draft him and let BJ walk. They’re pretty much the same player except Shamorie Ponds is 18 years old and has a beautiful lefty jumper. He’s posting per 40 stats of 21.1 points, 6.7 rebounds, 4.1 assists, and 1.8 steals. His TS% and eFG% are both over .600 and his 2P/3P/FT percentages are .525, .449, and .889. Personally I like Ponds a lot because he’s a New York City high school basketball legend. He led Thomas Jefferson High School in Brooklyn to their first city championship in over 50 years and chose to stay home instead of going away for school. Ponds, should he come out (and he should because his draft stock is more associated with physical traits he can’t really fix and not skill), projects to be a 2nd rounder since he’s about the same size as Jennings except he’s probably not as fast.

My current wishlist for the NBA draft is Luke Kennard and Shamorie Ponds. Summer League games would be really fun to watch with those two playing Horny Ball.

@46: he’d be coming off the bench, tho.

…ehh on 2nd thought, I dunno. Inefficient is inefficient, no?

What’s his defensive numbers like? Last thing this team needs is an inefficient checker who is a turnstile on D.

Gay has been a little more efficient this season, his ts% is up to .556 which isn’t terrible and he’s an above average rebounder for his position, but he’s still an offensive black hole that takes 18 shots a game, plays no defense and is not a passer.

to make everything worse, he has a player option for next year, so that puts the Knicks in a terrible place: if he does really well, he opts out and commands a major deal next off-season, which the Knicks will either give him (terrible move) or lose him for nothing… if he sucks, he’ll pick up the option and the Knicks are left with a bad player clogging more cap space.

boogie for Knicks would be awesome.. he got along well with Melo at the Olympics.. just add Wall!
