Actually, the whole idea that the Knicks actually got such a good deal that a player fired his agent is both mind-boggling and surreal.
Idk, was Robinson’s contract so bad? It looks like Moritz Wagner got about 1.75 mil per year on a 4 year while Robinson got 1.6 for the same length. There’s some team control on the last 2 years, but the Knicks seem to be working in good faith and really helping this kid out. Plus, Robinson’s new agent was a former Knicks scout I believe.
Robinson probably should have been more upset about the contract. I researched contracts for 2nd round picks last summer regarding Dotson. My memory might be a bit fuzzy but here’s what I remember: a 2nd round pick may take a minimum 1-year deal and then be a UFA. The risk is that the money is not guaranteed and he could be cut at any time. That’s a huge risk for 2nd round picks since that first million is very important to these guys.
If Mitch’s agent had waited until Knicks finished Summer League, the obvious action would have been to take the min. In a redraft he’d go top 10 and therefore might end up making more money than a 1st round pick over 4 years if he took the 1-year deal. The 4-year contract is a tremendous coup by Perry when you consider this alternative.
The article about Robinson’s agent says that the terms of his NBA contract weren’t the reason for the firing, but rather that it was his representation’s haphazard handling of his pre-draft process (like entering the combine only to pull out at the last minute even though he was ready to go) which led to nobody drafting him in the first round.
Yes he can take the required tender, which is a non-guaranteed one year deal for $800k, but at the end he becomes a restricted free agent not unrestricted. This is what K.J. McDaniels did. But this is not an easy thing to do. We might be excited about him, but turning down $3.2 million in guaranteed money after skipping college and watching 30 plus teams pass on you is a scary thing to do. Plus the injury insurance market is very expensive and of course only pays out injuries. Some players do manage to negotiate a happy medium. Jordan Bell is a RFA next summer but got guaranteed money. But I think that was largely because GSW were capped out and couldn’t offer the Hinkie inducement (NYK guranteed $3m plus instead of $2.2m bc we had some midlevel left to use).
But yeah this is a pretty raw deal from his perspective and reciprocally those four years of control are potentially incredibly valuable for the Knicks with almost no risk. I was concerned we might invent the maiden second round player option.
Athletes and agents get caught up in the short term, but think about how valuable it is in the long run to end up with the right team. In that sense, it could turn out that getting drafted late pans out pretty well.
I’m glad the Knicks are on the good side of a contract, for a change. I said way back that they should try to lock him up with a Willy-like contract, and they did, only better (I think all 4 years of Willy’s is guaranteed).
Hey, don’t feel bad for Robinson. He’ll get over $3m for these first two years. If he plays well and the Knicks pick up both option years, he’ll be a FA at, what, 24 (after making over $6m) and can get serious NBA money. In the meantime, he can grow up a bit before having ridiculous amounts of money thrown at him. Since there are questions about his maturity and all, that might be a good thing.
Maybe the kid’s big mistake was not just sucking it up for a year and staying in college. I wonder if that decision weighed on teams passing on him, too, not just sitting out the combine? Those two in combination might have generated serious questions about his maturity and long-term willingness to work hard.
I think there are legit long-term questions about him. Let’s hope he answers those positively and can fulfill his huge potential.
From what I understand Robinson leaving college early was partly a loyalty issue and not a maturity one. He was recruited to go Western Kentucky because his godfather, Shammond Williams, was hired to assistant coach the basketball team there. When Williams “resigned” from the Hilltoppers coaching staff in July Robinson followed him out of there. Instead of deciding to wait a year to transfer to another program he decided to enter the NBA draft.
I’m interested in how Robinson does for several reasons. One is his success will give some indication how much good a year of NCAA basketball does for a top prospect. So far, it seems like it could have helped give him exposure to be first round pick, although maybe going to the combine would have done some of that. The lack of organized Basketball is another question. If he has to spend extensive time in G League, that would indicate he missed that. But if he steps right into the Knicks and is useful, maybe that’s not such a loss.
@1, z-man. You bring up a great NYKs selection. Good teams need to find players others overlooked for whatever reason. Reed because he was undersized, only 6′-9″. But his heart, guts and will to win were giant-sized. And a great leader.
The Reed thing is funny because he was passed over specifically because he did compete against other players at the Olympic trials and they impressed people more.

Interesting, my take on your article was that absent the Olympics Reed might not have been drafted at all. Did I read that wrong?
I think that the Olympic trials definitely helped him more than they hurt him, yes. They just helped other players even more than Reed. Lucious Jackson got helped the most. #4 pick in the draft! And that was likely due to him beating out Reed for a spot on the team.
However, with at least 11 rounds of the draft at the time, Reed would have been drafted regardless. The Olympic trials probably helped him get drafted in the high second round. More importantly than being drafted would be whether he would have been signed after being drafted. A lot of guys who got drafted back then never got to play in the NBA (just a simple matter of supply and demand. Each team drafted, like, 10 guys and added like 2-3 new guys a year, so that was 7-8 guys who never caught on). And the trials likely helped prove that he was a guy who could cut it in the NBA and thus wherever he ended up being drafted, he would have made a team.
Honestly the NCAA doesn’t do all that much to prepare prospects for the NBA
What the NBA does, at least with top teams, is exposure to a much higher (hopefully) level of coaching. Going to college for a year teaches a young man a measure of how to live on their own and become independent. Robinson may have more to learn about life than he does about basketball.
Jaren Jackson looks very impressive in summer league. He’s got that all-star look about him. I don’t know who you can compare him to. He already looks like a better defender than KP and a better shooter too. Jevon Carter looks great as well.

JJJ did not shoot particularly well after game 1. Statistically speaking, he was significantly outplayed by Mitch, who had more rebounds and blocks, and scored more points on a much higher percentage. It’s only summer league, but I’m not convinced that JJJ will be the better player. He shoots the 3 but his interior game is not great.
