I suppose we will have to slay the dragon for the final boss.
And by dragon I mean this incredibly infuriating team.
https://x.com/haterreport/status/2059460097474957444?s=46
It is so incredibly strange to be waiting to see who we play in the finals instead of just waiting for the draft. Hard to get my head around it.
McCain really fits perfectly into this roster, but to be fair he probably came to OKC with some lessons from Embiid.
I hope the noise around OKC’s bullshit gets so loud that it pressures the refs to at least atenuate some of this garbage in the finals, at some point it has to get loud enough to damage the product right? We have to eventually get SOME advantage for being the bigger market, one would hope.
Fuck the Thunder. They’re the most entitled team ever. Only won last year because Hali got hurt.
We’re gonna curb stomp them in the finals (if that’s who we face).
I love that we’re still not being taken seriously. I can’t wait to shut all the haters up for good. Or, at least until next season starts!
If they don’t get the same bullshit, the Thunder are going to bitch the entire Finals about the “changed whistle.”
And said “changed whistle that benefited New York, which Silver wanted to do” will become yet another association conspiracy theory.
The Spurs were pathetic last night.
I expect them — and Wemby in particular — to bounce back tomorrow with a strong performance to force game 7.
OKC is getting the gift of rest while playing. I think it’s critical for us that SA forces Williams and Mitchell to suit up for a game 7.
The Thunder have quietly been pretty unimpressive, too. If the Spurs can put their big boy pants on tomorrow and force a game 7, they’ll be subject to the variance gods.
The narrative about how great these teams are is overblown. Game 1 was incredible. Nothing since then has been up to that level. Honestly games 2 thru 5 have been a lot like watching Detroit v Orlando.
Just finished looking at last night’s game. Saw some poor basketball, regardless of trash officiating. Mike Brown and co. have a lot to work with. Having the luxury of spending 100% of the next week analysing your next opponent versus having to play your current opponent is going to be worth way more than the added rest.
The Thunder ball pressure is real. But I don’t know what you are supposed to do when they can manhandle everyone and you can’t take a breath next to them on defense. It’s infuriating.
Knowing how much they are into analytics, I’m 100% convinced that they have figured out that flopping is the most efficient solution on offense.
“I hope the noise around OKC’s bullshit gets so loud that it pressures the refs to at least atenuate some of this garbage in the finals, at some point it has to get loud enough to damage the product right? We have to eventually get SOME advantage for being the bigger market, one would hope.”
Totally agree. Possible advantages for us against OKC:
1. The noise is getting quite loud, and I almost can’t imagine anything other than the refs being told to rein this shit in to some degree. It could be fixed instantly if they called technical fouls whenever someone falls to the ground without getting touched—I don’t see them going that far, but I do see officiating changing in the NBA Finals. OKC *should* be ready for that to happen, but they may not be. They’ve been getting away with what they’ve been doing for too long.
2. The Hartenstein effect: A lot of players on our team know how he plays on both offense and defense, much better than he knows our sets.
3. No repeat champion since 2018.
4. We are the bigger market. It shouldn’t help, but it sure seems to.
I’m not optimistic that OKC’s whistle will change. There’s surely noise amongst fans, but by and large the press doesn’t like to talk about refereeing issues, and so I don’t expect this to become a narrative.
SGA had 32 points on 7 made FGs. Only two were from deep. I’m not suggesting that they are all wrong calls, but Spurs players definitely do not get the same whistle.
I worry that this will very much get into Brunson and KAT’s head. And Hart’s.
One more thing: game 1 of the WCF was one of the best games I’ve ever seen and the officiating was great. And then they never use the same officials again.
That’s egregious.
It’s one thing for SGA to get those calls but Jared McCain?
Whatever. The Knicks just need to expect it and accept it.
I’m hearing a lot of “the Knicks should be favored in the finals” talk.
Only folks who reflexively regurgitate talking points without thinking are not taking us seriously. Granted that’s a lot of people.
The OKC whistle is beyond ridiculous.
SA did not play especially well and I’m not looking forward to our offense finally getting tested by a top defense like OKC’s, but the league has to say something to the refs about all the flopping BS.
It’s on SA and specifically Wemby to respond and force game 7.
Drawing fouls and boosting true shooting percentages through getting to the free throw line is a fundamental tenet of modern analytical efficiency-ball. Which is why it’s now so intentionally chased, and so fake and artificial — rather than something that just happens organically in the course of playing basketball.
Flopping is the new tanking.
We do have Jalen Brunson, though. And they seem to be calling it both ways lately.
The guy this will likely impact more than anyone is KAT. If SGA attacks him relentlessly he’ll be in foul trouble every game. And he might not even have to flop to get the calls.
If Steve Stoute is still on payroll to be Minister of Propaganda, then he should be disseminating a social media campaign to stir up public opinion against the unfair whistle the Thunder is receiving. Riles used to be a master of doing this back in his Knicks days.
I’m not going to fall into the underrate our opponent and overrate our team trap. OKC is a great team. Possibly a dynastic one. Full stop. We are gonna have our hands full.
They are missing one of their two best players. That really helps! They are also missing a guy who has been dubbed the Belgian Brunson, for good reason. That helps too! It’s certainly fair to hope that even if those two come back, they will not be at 100% and re-integrating them could possibly be disruptive.
But they are going to present all kinds of problems for us on both ends, problems that we have not had to deal with against our 3 very shitty opponents, like, at all. OKC would have smoked those teams as bad as we did, just like they smoked the shitty Suns and Lakers.
A-yup.
Even more annoying to me is every mock draft writer selecting a big for the Knicks while repeating the same dumb mantra that apparently no one has researched.
This was in the ringer today: “The Knicks are in the Finals, and have no realistic pathway to keeping Mitchell Robinson, whose all-world talent on the glass will surely warrant a sizable contract elsewhere.”
Even without the flopping, SGA is the best non-big in the NBA. The dude regularly shoots over 50% from the field with a 33% usage. I get that he pads his stats with irreverent foul-baiting. But the majority of the fouls he draws are legit. People are fouling him because they are leaning, lunging, grabbing, doing anything they can to keep him from getting into his ridiculous bag.
I thought iHart had a sensational 2-way game yesterday. When that floater is working, he adds another dimension to their offense.
Yeah, but that iHart floater doesn’t seem to work as much as it used to…….or at best, it’s under-utilized.
If it’s OKC, I’m pretty sure not a single analyst/writer will pick the Knicks.
“If it’s OKC, I’m pretty sure not a single analyst/writer will pick the Knicks.”
Nah, we’ll almost certainly get some picks. For clicks. But really, I’ve already seen us being picked over either Western team on outlets such as First Things First (Nick Wright, for what it’s worth). The injuries and rest are definitely factors.
Here’s another one from last night.
https://www.reddit.com/r/NBAGossips/comments/1torv0f/playing_to_flop_man_ugly_team/
Obviously SGA is a great player, but I don’t think it’s possible to separate what he does from the egregious flopping. It’s just like Harden was, it forces defenders to play differently because they know any contact will be exploited, and he’s obviously extremely skilled and intelligent and does it regularly. It’s an integral part to this game and it opens up space for him to do everything else he does at a super high level.
It’s not just hunting fouls, it’s exploiting any flopping possibility. On screens, rebounds, etc. Any contact, really.
Plus, nobody falls this much.
https://sports.yahoo.com/nba/article/why-shai-gilgeous-alexander-falls-a-lot-because-it-works-153611079.html
I’m gonna disagree Bruno. James Harden never shot anywhere close to 50% from the field. Most of his prime was spent with Houston, and he peaked at .541 eFG%. Shai was at .597 this year.
SGA was both MVP and CPoY this year. He’s really hard to stop without fouling. I’ve watched enough of him to know that when he gets within 20 feet he is as close to automatic as I’ve ever seen. And the numbers bear that out. He was a ridiculous 58.6% from 10-16 feet this year, and an equally ridiculous 50.4% on long 2’s. And that is with the opponent doing everything they can to stop him.
thanks marechal, good article from yahoo there…
that’s some frustrating stuff from sga…sure hope it doesn’t lead to another ring for him and okc…
I’m completely immune to whatever any dumb sports pundit thinks is going to happen in any sport. “Sports guys yelling at each other on a split screen” is the lowest form of entertainment possible
hopefully at some point espn and fox sports pick up on the sga excessive flopping and poor officiating specific to that one player…
although, yeah…sure seems to be a team memo now…fall fall fall…
Just to be clear, I’m not arguing that SGA doesn’t flop around like a fish out of water. He does!
I’m arguing that a) even without the flopping, he’s one of the best scorers I’ve ever seen, and b) because of that, he is being defended in a way that makes foul-baiting more productive, encouraging flopping.
I agree with anyone who says that the NBA needs to legislate the extreme flopping out of the game, either in-game by rules interpretation or rules changes, or post-game by penalizing players for things like egregiously trying to mislead referees.
The seeds for doing that are there. We’ve seen lots of foul calls reversed on the basis of incidental contact. But the consequences are not severe enough to deter the behavior. There are anti-flopping rules in place with penalties, but they are rarely enforced, and even the enforcement is not much of a deterrent.
But it starts with educating refs to lean more towards non-calls when contact is marginal. Good defense should be rewarded, not deterred. We don’t have to go back to the late ’90s-early 2000s to get there. Just give defenders more ability to make contact with shooters, and educate refs to only call fouls when there is clear, conclusive evidence that the defender made significant “unfair” shot-altering contact with the shooter. The issue with the clips shown are that there is no such contact on those plays.
However, if a player is clearly drawing lots of legit fouls by foul-baiting, that’s just part of the game. Michael Jordan wasn’t known as a flopper, but he got to the line a ton because he knew how to draw them.
and yet some how all the ridiculous yelling from guys like smith, bayless, mad dog sell sell sell…
don’t watch much fox sports stuff, but saw recent clips of chris broussard who works for fox doing it now…used to like broussard…
I guess with the way media is, making loud noise of any kind works to get folks’ attention…
Nice piece on Shamet: https://www.facebook.com/reel/2087316558497646
What are we prepared to do about Caruso? (stats for Western Conference Finals only):
24.7 points per 36
3.5 rebounds per 36
4.1 assists per 36
2.3 steals per 36
1.5 blocks per 36
.568 FG/.581 3FG/.810 FT shooting splits
.798 TS%
.773 eFG%
Caruso is a good player but that’s obviously SSS going on there. Kind of like how Landry Shamet is probably not the world’s first 1.000+ TS% player
“He falls because it works.”
It’s just like tanking. If the incentive is there, and he’s good at falling, he’d be stupid not to fall all the time.
Again it’s up to the absolutely terrible commissioner of the NBA to do something about it.
About Caruso, well, you do nothing and expect him to go back to his usual self, he’s just on a major heater.
With SGA I’ll just agree to disagree, and I do admit that the disgust i feel watching such a talented guy play this bullshit brand of basketball definitely makes me angrier than usual at him. I just don’t see the best player in the league when I watch him because I do believe the way he plays warps the defense completely around it in ways that stats can’t properly capture, and I highly doubt he would have the same gaudy percentages if he was able to be defended like a normal player, but obviously that is conjecture and can’t possibly be proven one way or the other.
Bingo. It’s very easy to identify fake fouls and Silver should demand that they be cut out of the game. He did that a few years ago with a very small subset of fake fouls — the ridiculous ones where a guy gets tapped on the arm while just standing there and then jumps up and pretends that he was shooting. Still a foul — bad. But not a shooting foul — good.
The Chris Paul/James Harden move of intentionally driving into a guy, flailing, then going up for a fake shot should have been banned years ago. It never should have been called to begin with. SGA does that shit all the time. He’s still a fantastic player, but that’s not really the issue.
(I’m not talking about a genuine move to the basket; initiating contact there is perfectly fine and there’s no and should be no requirement that an offensive guy divert his path in order to avoid contact. But Harden/Paul/SGA do that shit out on the floor, in connection with ordinary jump shots. That’s the shit that has to go.)
I like to think we are better equipped defensively to handle OKC than the Spurs.
– Mitch Johnson is a great coach but a young one. Brown has a lot more in his bag and what seems to be a better ability to adapt on the fly.
– with JW out, our wing defenders are not only better than OKC’s they have more veteran savvy. SGA is obviously amazing, but I like the idea of OG guarding him with Mikal ball-hawking him from the side all game.
– Deuce and his length should be able to neutralize lil baldy at least well enough.
– no one is Wemby, but Mitch and the new and improved KAT can protect the rim very well.
It really is funny how a hard-fought Western Conference Finals at the same time as another Knick curb stomp has given the Knicks so much more life from the pundits.
The gamblers are still all in on the Thunder, though. That doesn’t really mean anything, of course, but it’s still interesting.
“About Caruso, well, you do nothing and expect him to go back to his usual self, he’s just on a major heater.”
Mostly/maybe. But we still can’t leave the Carusos and Isaiah Joes of the world open (although Joe is shooting badly from 3 lately), or they *will* make us pay. Jeez—that goes for Kenrich Williams, Jaylin Williams, and Cason Wallace, too. It’s a big part of their game and it’s definitely failed us in the past, but I trust that if we know it, then Mike Brown knows it, too.
OKC right now is a 6.5 point favorite in Game 1.(*) They’ll probably wind up being something like a 2.25 to 1 favorite to win the series, i.e., Knicks will probably be about +225. That seems about right.
If I hadn’t already cashed out at +750 when OG strained his hamstring, I’d probably cash out at that number. The Knicks absolutely can win the series, but there’s no real value-add or Moneyball at +225, IMHO.
A lot of it will depend on health.
(*) Spurs are -4.5 in a hypo Game 1.
LeBron was also a quintessential flopper. His FTr was often in the mid-.400s and even above .500 one year. No one diminishes his greatness because of it.
SGA is an all-time great scorer who happens to flop a lot. He’s not a great scorer because he flops a lot.
I agree that if the offensive player initiates the contact, the only kind of foul a defensive player should be called for is the obvious holding/hacking kind.
It might not even require anything but an intensive re-education of refs to accomplish this. That, and stricter penalties for egregious cases.
The McCain video really makes me think it’s something the whole team is being taught. It looks just like how SGA fake-falls down — kind of a crumble, first to the knees and then down onto the chest, very safely dramatic and really no contact involved to cause it. But of course the ref has to call it, because he clearly fell down and nobody would just fall down, would they? That’d be crazy…
In a way, I think being on the road for games 1 and 2 are an advantage for us. If we do in need a wake-up call game to shake off the rust and get ramped up for the heightened competition and intensity, better that a theoretical loss comes on the road.
There’s also a chance that OKC gets blindsided by the exquisite “veteran” basketball we are playing in contrast to the bludgeoning “kiddie” bar fight they are facing right now.
One thing I totally agree about is that Brunson’s rep as a flopper is not anywhere near as deserved as Shai’s.
Pitch framing by catchers is the baseball version of faking out the officials and it’s not only taught, but sorted for.
He’s not out for the finals, though. He’s day-to-day, like OG was.
And if the Thunder win Game 6 he’ll have had two full weeks to rest.
It’s critical that the Spurs win tomorrow and force him to play game 7.
Pitch framing goes WAY back, to at least the 1960’s.
Interestingly, pitch framing wasn’t really believed in so much by the nerds until PitchFX became readily available and the effects were proven beyond any doubt.
I asked chad for a spell for you Doogie. That should do it…
i don’t go to the “For You” tab of Twitter much, but when I do, it feeds me nonstop OKC whistle outrage – algorithm is getting very accurate!
Honestly – this needs to be looked at very closely by the league this offseason, just like they looked at tanking. It’s terrible for the product on the floor. I would favor flagrant-1 foul if called in-game (not just a T), and all games reviewed afterward for flop violations. If you have a post-hoc flop violation you get fined some large amount of $ and it’s added to your flagrant foul point count for the season. The judges would not be officials but would be Ernie Johnson, Shaq, Kenny Smith, Barkley, and a guest judge for tiebreakers.
No one remembers that in our Game 4 curbstomp of Philly, Embiid was perfect from the field. No one will likely remember that Spida had 31 on 9-18 shooting in our curbstomp of the Cavs in Game 4. So I’m thinking it’ll be less about slowing down SGA and more of A. Making him work to get to his spots, and B. Limit his abilities to bend the defense.
Oubre says Brunson wears his hair ugly on purpose to get more foul calls; a subtextual roundhouse that invokes the Syd Deane paradox which I, for one, am still on the fence about all these years later.
Oubre is one to talk, eh? 🙂
…and C. Don’t be near him when he falls down.
On the flopping, I’d be fine if they just stopped calling it a foul when someone falls down. Most likely a turnover (worst case a jump ball), and that’s a pretty strong incentive to stop doing it.
Oubre is one to talk cause Oubre is hot as shit. He’d never choose ugly, not even for twice the foul calls. Gotta respect that.
If you say so. I don’t personally find Oubre to be particularly hot. YMMV, of course! 🙂
Falling down gets you more foul calls? Has anyone told the refs this could also be applied to KAT?
KAT falls down after he makes the shot. And on his ass, with a bit of a slide added on with sprayed legs. Looks like he is gawky rather than shoved, even when…shoved.
KAT’s falling down is reminiscent of Mudiay’s falling down, the only difference being KAT usually makes his layup, while Mudiay almost never did, meaning he was out of the play if the other team got the rebound. KAT usually has time to get back into the game to play D.
let’s be honest, when sga does it, it’s kind of sexy, in a sub kind of way…kat not soooo much, in any way…
just kidding, most likely, maybe, not sure, probably not…
I’m sorry, but this is a crazy comparison. When LeBron’s ftr reached those numbers he was taking about 35 to 40% of his shots at the 0-3 feet mark, meaning he was relentlessly driving all the way to the rim and getting hacked while he was doing that. Obviously he had a favorable whistle, every mega star does.
SGA is around 20 to 25% in shots at the rim (coincidentally a very similar number to Harden in his peak years) with a ton more shots from 3-10, which is those attempts where he chases contact deliberately and acts like a sniper shot him.
Just looking at ftr and ignoring the shot profile (and really, the eye test in this case) is not the way to look at this.
KAT falling down after making a crazy drive to the basket and being slow to get up on D…that is another thing that I’ve only seen a few times these entire playoffs. Another advantage of him being more of the facilitator and not having to create so much offense. Definitely helps our defense if he’s able to get back on D and isn’t trying to get up after making some crazy shot.
for the first part there…way to rile yourself up and get those adrenal glands to fire off…beats cocaine and caffeine, right…near instantaneous hormonal flow…a flow state for sure…
very cool though to see an algorithm catching on…more of us than oklahoma city thunder fans…our perspective should prevail…it’s righteous math…
not to be mean to you frank…i’ve always really enjoyed watching people since, forever…mostly what i see now is folks refusing to use any part of the brain other than – whatever the fuck the phone thing is doing to us…it’s different for sure…at times it feels like the invasion of the body snatchers’ premise…
prohibits so many other healthy brain functions from occurring though…intentionally it seems…scary, used to be at least you could point to a money trail, it’s different, more focused towards behavioral control…guess that’s not new though…

President Donald Trump said he is planning on attending an NBA Finals game at Madison Square Garden next month.
Trump announced his plans Wednesday to reporters at a Cabinet meeting, saying he was invited to attend the Finals by New York Knicks owner James Dolan.
“I think I’ll be going to one of the games,” Trump said. “I was invited by numerous people, and [Dolan], and I think I’ll be going.”
Trump said he initially was going to attend Game 5 of the Knicks-Cavs series, but New York canceled those plans by winning the series in four games, extending its historic run this postseason.
“I was going to go on Wednesday,” Trump said. “But [the Knicks] closed it out very quickly. … Boy what a team, they won all their games. They have some great players.”
“It’s great to see it,” Trump said. “The Knicks have really suffered for years.”

Because I had no idea. I also thought it was a movie.
I hope not. I don’t want that anywhere near our pristine team.
He’s gonna paint half his face blue.
Anyone see these reports about Durant being open to joining the Knicks?
LOL, fuck you dude.
I hope it’s not game three I’ll be celebrating Clarence’s mister’s birthday at the game.
He was at the Daytona 500 when I went a few years ago. It’s a total pain the dick. Lines are massive and security is a drag. So if anyone here is lucky enough to have tickets, and numbnuts shows up, just be prepared.
That said, seeing The Beast on the high banking was wild! They even did a flyover with AF1.
I’m not emotionally ready for the image of Mitch embracing President Trump.
Looking forward (barely) to some highly inventive MSG chants…
We’ll have to agree to disagree, Bruno. Their games are different. Shai’s office is the midrange. LeBron’s was the paint. Both flailed in their office. Compare LeBron to Melo, wh got a terrible whistle compared to flailing LeBron. People bitched and moaned about it all the time.
Just when i thought there was nothing about the Knicks that could be unpleasant…
Oh, i heard Mikal is not happy with the team… we keep sending teams to Cancun in 4 and that takes games away from his ironman record !!! LOLOL
Longe abesto, stulte summe!
Geo my friend, you will seldom come across a happier guy than me once I gave up processed foods and stopped self medicating. The kingdom of heaven is within.
There are NBA Finals ads on my TV showing that the Knicks are playing. Still can’t quite believe it.
Boy does Austin wells suck
Me too!
you got me nervous now Bob…hopefully none of your self medicating techniques included:
– cannabis, in its many forms
– porn, ditto
– nature vids
– video games that take years to play
– chocolate
– sugar, in its many forms
– hanging out with my dog
– walking
okay, please let me know if I’m in the clear Bob…
and yeah, I’ll try to do better with avoiding fast food stuff…so much bad food tastes so good…
checked my feed, and yes it concurs, austin wells is a backup level catcher…and that’s because of his pitch framing, defensive skills…
had high hopes for him…same thing with sanchez…
although rice can catch, don’t want to stick him behind the plate to get constantly pummeled…
must be really hard to draft a good mlb level starting catcher…
Ohtani has a no hitter in the 6th and his era has actually gone up.
He hit a home run and threw 6 no-hit innings and the announcer says “this wasn’t peak Ohtani tonight”, haha.
