Simmons will turn his career around tonight…even start raining 3’s…
Pepper, I’m sure you are right
This Atlantic article details how Nets are using defense to defy pre-season expectations https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5921505/2024/11/15/nets-revitalized-defense-nba-surprise/
If we give up even one three-pointer to Ben Simmons we will definitely have a lot to re-assess.
Hey Thibs reads KB right? Maybe we’ll try that ‘defense’ thing?
Tonight’s Visible Fifth Man.
Simmons has been playing pretty well in his unique way

According to this chart the Knicks have been pretty good so far this season.
Listened to a fun Bill Simmons basketball podcast this morning (the one from Wednesday). It’s a great time for schadenfreude’ing the Knicks two worst enemies: Embiid and Trae Young.
The Embiid bit was particularly good. After mercilessly mocking him for 5 mins they asked which era Shaquille O’Neal is Joel Embiid currently. And the answer was Phoenix Shaq 😂.
That Embiid extension (which was totally unnecessary) is looking like a franchise killer. Is he really a better player than KAT? I don’t think so. He protects the rim better but he’s a horrible defensive rebounder.
No Knicks stuff but a lot of Minnesota. And Atlanta. It seems like Dyson Daniels (who anyone could have stolen) is the wing we thought Mikal Bridges was. And Jalen Johnson is a beast, but we all know that.
Jalen Johnson’s current advanced stats in B-R:
WS48: .045
BPM: -1.1
TS%: .536
He did just have a triple-double vs. the Celts, so Bill Simmons might be basing his opinion on that….
IMO Ben Simmons is playing close to as well as he has ever played. He’s being less aggressive as a scorer and for some reason turning the ball over more (maybe noise so far), but other than that he’s playing well. I think people are just way more sensitive to the flaws in his game now than they were when he first came into the league because they were expecting improvement that never occurred.
After using a friend’s Verizon login to watch non-national Knicks games for the last 3-4 seasons (whenever the Comcast/MSG dispute began), I finally bit the bullet and subscribed to MSG+, figuring if I go month to month and cancel when the playoffs come, the price isn’t terrible. Has anybody used the Gotham Sports app much? If so, anything I should know before I start setting it up on various devices?
Z-Man check out Dyson Daniels numbers, similar WS/48 and BPM but with a worse TS%. He does average a ton of steals though so at least he has something going for him I guess.
There is a very real chance that neither KAT nor Deuce play tonight. Could easily lose to the Nets in this Cup game if it happens that way.
Based on our recent performances vs. shitty teams like the Hawks and Bulls, we could easily lose even if they were playing. If they’re out we have like 4 NBA players available.
The worst thing about this season so far is that we’ve been this disappointing while having decent luck in terms of player health. Yes, Mitch is out, but he’s probably never gonna be healthy for 2 months in a row again. If we end up having the injury luck we had least year we will struggle to win 30 games.
Ending up with a worse record than the team to which we traded all of our draft picks is just so deliciously Knicksy. Bonus points if they have a better defense than us after trading us their “defensive stopper.”

Alan, I would recommend Fubo. It’s pricier than Gotham, but I’ve heard Gotham has been buggy and with Fubo you can record the games (almost positive this is not a feature on Gotham) and watch later.
I seem to have to reset my password or validate my email every time I use it but otherwise it’s the same as the old MSG+.
That’s great, he’s the defensive anchor of a team who’s 26th in defensive rating!
Well we could have drafted Ryan Dunn and passed on Mikal…
Alan, do you not have a local cable subscription? Or your package doesn’t have MSG?
My wife kind of banned the tv in our bedroom so I have used the ipad to watch games for a while on MSG+ and now Gotham. It’s slightly clunky. Pausing the game often has hiccups. I find I have to reboot it a fair amount. But if you just sit down and stream it works fine.
For national games I use youtubetv and much prefer the interface. You can go back and watch plays quite seamlessly, etc.
I have always kind of thought Ben Simmons got hosed a bit. He’s a limited player and overpaid but also quite useful. He’s a terrific defender when healthy and huge and a great passer. He’s unusual but I think better than people realize.
Or what DRed said, yeah.
Don’t ever look at OG’s. You might see his career WS/48 of .09 and bpm of 0.1. He does average a ton of money, though 😉
We have Comcast. Comcast has been in a dispute with MSG for years, and thus doesn’t offer it in any package. Eventually, we’re just going to cut the cord and get either YouTube or Hulu with live TV. It’s all ridiculously expensive.

i don’t think even this is close to true. his refusal to either get fouled or shoot from distance renders him a huge detriment when off the ball, and his turnovers have risen because defenses are playing the passing lanes harder when he is on ball thanks to his utter lack of optionality in the half court…this despite his tremendous passing skill. defensively he looks like he’s gone from great to good. no way can he do what dyson daniels did to jalen and he is fouling too much. though that’s a bit unfair because they are sometimes asking a lot of him as a rim protector on defense which is not quite his sweet spot.
the net result is better than maybe expected but a shell of his prime when he would shot 12 2pa and 5 fts per 36. the nets have played well overall but the offense has been terrible with simmons on the court.

little late for my birthday but shit that was nice of you
And an all star quality on/off for his career. 😉
Can anyone think of a 3&D PF that might be available?
He doesn’t have to be a high usage scorer. In fact I’d prefer he not be because we don’t need an expensive scorer whose usage we don’t need. I’m trying to come up with someone that can space the floor, help defend the paint and be good on the perimeter when required that gets paid in the 20m range.
Strat, the Nets have a couple of them. But we already gave them anything they’d want from us in such a trade.
Some day PT, we can meet in person maybe, and I can give you all the hot lifestyle content you clearly need….
Alan, I should have cancelled my cable a long time ago. Barely use it anymore and it’s super expensive.
As the literal first person on this site to bring up Ryan Dunn (check the records), I still kinda wish we had drafted him. He’s currently shooting .378 on 45 attempts from three.
And yet, despite my incredible foresight, I refuse to take a victory lap like so many smaller men might do in this instance. You’re welcome.
if you really loved me you’d text from the uber ‘sry heading back home last minute post history review led wife to pull the plug’

never seen as sharp an aesthetic leap in shooting form in such a short period. like, including 9 year olds.
Who had this on their bingo card after the trade?
Director, I was pretty high on KAT statistically (although terribly worried about fit), but would have guessed 23 PPG, 10 RPG, and 40% 3P%. I could still end up right if Brunson recovers from his case of vertigo (cutting into his PPG), and I don’t expect he’ll keep making half his threes for the season. Rebounding may drop if/when Precious and Mitch come back, as right now his only competition is from Hart. But that’s been a real revelation. The whole package has been, to be honest.
Hey KB’ers, I’m back and better than ever! I survived quadruple bypass, but our boys are testing me. Actually, I’m not worried at all. Once we get Mitch and Precious back, and maybe add a shooter, we will have more than enough to win 50+ games and grab a top 3 seed.
Omg congrats, gkh! But sorry to hear about your testicles… Oh wait, did you mean the Knicks?
But seriously, that’s amazing.
Yay to the first part, GK!
As to the second, Macri’s pod with Katz today was more or less in line with my thoughts: it’s not going well right now, and the Mikal stuff is worrisome, but also, these guys have barely played together as a unit so far, Villanova magic doesn’t always reappear immediately just because it did when Hart and DDV came here, and Thibs teams here pretty much always take a couple of months to get their act together.
If we get to Elvis’ birthday (1/8) and they still look like a mess, then I’ll worry.
Ess-dog it’s too early to comment on my testicles!
I think you mean David Bowie’s birthday!
Also, Begley says still no update on Kevin McCullar Jr. I fear he’s going to be one of those “never healthy” guys who retire young.
Why bother when we can’t afford any? We’re a finished product. This is the team.
Congrats man! That is amazing news!
Now we just need a quadruple bypass on our defense to work.
outstanding g-man 🙂
quadruple bypass sounds pretty life altering…like a first day of the rest of your life thing…
your tone is almost like a: better than new kind of vibe…wonderful stuff, and, so cool to find out you get to keep the story going…
was there anything specific you were looking forward to after the surgery?
Welcome back, gkhenman!
Are they shitty, though? Is anyone shitty anymore?
Ok, the 76ers are shitty. But these aprons are achieving parity.
Dunn has cooled off a bit since his hot start, going 6 for his last 20 from 3pt, which is of course a .300 percentage. It would be pretty remarkable if he could sustain that .380 number over a full season.
Awesome, GK. So glad you’ll be around to celebrate the Knicks in the ECF this year!
This is why I haven’t been worried and am surprised that so many here are… It’s pretty consistent
The Wizards, Jazz, and Pelicans are definitely shitty.
I’d normally be worried about Cam Thomas going for 35 against us, or about Dennis Schroder going for 25 and 15, but fortunately we have a defensive-minded coach who will prevent those occurrences.
Maybe we’ll have a Mikal Bridges Revenge Game Narrative?
They are indeed shitty. If it doesn’t seem obvious, it’s because we are even shittier — we’ve expended every future asset we have to win now but aren’t noticeably better than play-in caliber teams in by far the weaker conference.
I’m not sure where you get that idea when Mitch and Precious will be tradeable soon, we have a few rookies that I’m sure have some interest around the league and we have a couple of dead small salaries.
Great news GKH! Congrats and welcome back!
The 76ers are not shitty. It’s pretty easy to make the case they are better than us when healthy and that’s no knock on us at all. What they are now is hurt. But they aren’t in some hyperemotional meltdown over it because the start of the season isn’t going the way they would like. They’ll do their best to stay in playoff contention and try to get everyone healthy for a late season and playoff run. I want no part of Embiid, Maxey and George in the playoffs. Hopefully Boston will tangle with them.
Great news!
The season has been disappointing and frustrating so far, but it’s really early.
A lot of things aren’t right*, they need work and could sink our season if we do not strengthen them out, but I don’t think the coaching staff, the FO and the players will sit on their hands for the remaining 70 games.
If necessary I’ll start worrying around New Year’s Eve and I’ll panic at the trade deadline, until then I’ll limit myself to curses and casual burst of rage (especially when I lose hours of sleep to watch 1-point home losses) 😀
I find it amusing that if the play stops before tonight’s game the Knicks have home field advantage in the first round of the playoffs despite their shitty start.
* some of them more important than others
Wonderful news, GKH! Just in time to watch the Knicks gel and start playing like a contender! 😉
I thought Mitch and Precious were gonna save us from having the worst defense in the league. How can they do that while also being traded?
There’s also the fact that Mitch has no real trade value. At this point he is probably closer to retirement than meaningfully contributing to a team.
Agreed. I said the Bulls and Hawks were shitty, not the Sixers. Sixers are the clear 2nd best team in the East and have far more championship equity than we do. They are also somehow less all-in than we are with more flexibility to improve. They have 2 players who would be the clear best player on our team and Maxey will likely join that category within two years. On top of that, McCain looks a lot better than any of our rookies.
Guys I was just making fun of the 76ers.
But no, Strat, it’s not really easy to make the case that they’re actually better than us.
And they’re not “clearly the second best team in the East,” either, Pags. That’s a laughable comment.
It is actually more feasible that they will draft Cooper Flagg than win the East, and that is not hyberbole.
It is definitely a second chance Geo… I hope I’m up to the challenge…From your lips to God’s ears Cyber…
Joel Embiid assaulted a reporter but that’s not “some hyperemotional meltdown”?
GK, fantastic to hear and you and your loved ones must be so ecstatic. Assuming if your doctors are competent your recovery period will not allow any Knicks viewing (for good reason given the D) so stay tuned here for the low down.
GK. Wow! Legit great news on KB. Wishing you all the best.
Glad to hear it GK!
Philly’s big 3 hasn’t shared the court at all this year. They’ve had 2 of them for all of 2 games. They didn’t have any of them the other night.
They’ll flail all year because I don’t think they’ll ever be healthy, but the ‘what if’ is always there.
At full strength, how are they not? They have the MVP. Their top 3 blows ours out of the water. McCain has played like an All-Star. Oubre guarded Brunson in the playoffs better than I’ve seen Bridges guard anyone. Yabusele would be the best true PF on our team.
We are not in their league as far as talent. Brunson/Towns would be their third or fourth best player.
Crazy stat I just saw: If you’re trying to shoot against Wemby, there’s a one-in-ten chance he’s blocking you.
As we noted in the game thread, OG almost ran over Anne Hathaway and her kid. She posted the video and called it a bucket list moment. 😉
The stats lie. There is a ten-in-ten chance he’s blocking me.
Ok, I chuckled at that….
Awesome news, GK!
thibs is about to solve the infamous four body problem
great to hear that gk
gk, congratulations. Great to hear.
E and Pags, now you need to tone down the schtick, so you don’t send the lad back to the hospital.
Towns not playing. Deuce not playing.
It’s the Mikal breakout game? Or the Cam Payne breakout game?
Sims starts at center. Nets won’t score.
Today is Towns birthday. He could be saving his energy for his party tonight.
Thanks for the well wishes everyone. Now we need a big game from Brunson!
