    Small sample size entertainment fun:

    Knicks are 3rd in offensive rating, up to 17th in defensive rating. They’re 2nd in offensive eFG%. They’re 5th in SRS and 5th in net rating.

    KAT has a 6.8 BPM so far, good for 8th in the league. I guess he probably won’t shoot .647 from 3pt all year though.

    The defensive rating will certainly get better once the historic shooting from the Celtics get dilluted with more games, and the eye test so far looks good. The ball movement has been impressive certainly, if we can take anything from destroying the barely NBA level Pistons is that i firmly believe KAT can be used as a passer even more on this offense. He’s got the skill and we have 3 wing players who can run around and make smart cuts, it’s a way to generate offense that doesn’t rely on ISOs and fits the squad very well.

    We’re 3rd in Dreb% and 16th Oreb%. So we’re not missing a PF so far.

    We’re also 1st in 3p% at .417, which isn’t likely to last, and our opponent 3p% is dead center at 15th.

    Our shooters are good, but not that good. There should be some offensive regression, hopefully more than offset by our guys figuring out how to play together.

    Thibs on Precious:

    He’s doing a little more on the court. Once a guy can start doing stuff on the court, then usually he’ll travel with us. Sometimes it’s better to keep him back [in New York] because we can do more rehab stuff at the facility.

    So it’s a case-by-case situation. So he’s making good, steady progress. But he hasn’t actually gone through a real practice yet.

    I like the ball movement with the addition of Towns. Towns will put the ball on the floor, but he doesn’t stop the ball. He’ll either drive if he thinks he has the best of it or make the pass fairly quickly.

    Strat’s point makes me realize that this is the first time (ever?) that I’m not regularly yelling at the screen for stupid things happening on offense. Randle, Barrett, Mudiay, Noel, Elf, the list goes on and on. I semi-complained yesterday about Brunson playing with his head down a bit too much and missing open teammates, but hard to argue with 14-22 and 6-8 from three for 36 points.

    And no yelling at the defense, either. It’s very competent basketball. Weird.

    Raven,

    Hopefully this is just the beginning of better player and ball movement within all the extra space Towns provides.

    STOP THE COUNT

    I wrote yesterday that I thought we had our best PG since Clyde and best center since Patrick. I think Bridges is our best wing since King and compared Josh Hart. Yes. To Rodman.

    One poster mentioned Melo and I’ll concede that Bridges needs a few games to prove it.

    The thing that blows my mind is that no one quibbled with the first two assertions. Maybe the NBA as a whole is that much better and we’re only 10th best, as someone posted yesterday, but this could be the best Knick team of my life. And I’m old.

    KAT was a regular, annual 5-8 BPM center before the Wolves acquired Gobert. I know he gives some of that back on defense, but he really is some hell of an offensive center.

    “he really is some hell of an offensive center“

    His rebounding is a surprise to me as well

    I’ve seen enough. KAT is the next generation evolution of Ewing.

    The way he BBQed Isaiah Stewart in the post was a joy to watch. If Thibs’ big man finishing school helps him improve on the flashes of offensive rebounding we’ve seen so far, look out.

    As Dean Oliver concluded in Basketball on Paper, defensive rebounding is simply a component of defense and as we sit here today, KAT has the highest DReb% in the association.

    soooooo, are we thinking that keeping KAT at the five for 30 plus minutes a game is the way forward?

    I was thinking about KAT at the five for less than 15 minutes a game…

    I still actually yell at Hart to “Take the shot!” on occasion, but even he’s been doing a great job most of the time. 14 ppt and 10 rebs per, and a 55% shooting. Of course his 3pt shot is at 28.6%, but he took three yesterday (made one). Hopefully that’ll edge up.

    He’s so not “lost” at this point. Absolutely integral to the team’s function.

    KAT’S much more fun to watch than I expected. The fluid outside stroke, even well defended, is just limpid. It looks like he’s at a shoot around without a care in the world. He also makes a lot of very hard back-to-the-basket moves with people draped on him look like he’s alone in the gym. Great hands. Slick passes. Fast reads. All very fun. The drives are more surprising for a person his size than they are beautiful but the threat of them clearly helps create space. The fouls aren’t great but he’s less whiney and more focused than I expected. I’m more of an unapologetic fan each time I watch.

    Loving Mikal’s game as much as I thought I would. Not many better two way third offensive option guys in the league, I think. Great to see JB looking like his all star self again. I wasn’t doubting he’d get back to that sooner or later but watching him struggle is obviously less fun than watching him dazzle.

    Loving OG’s game as much this year as I did last year. He’s got a can’t-be-hurried-but-stays-in-control no-wasted-movement thing on defense that reminds me of watching Luka on offense. His movements aren’t actually slow at all but they have some visual clarity attribute that’s usually only associated with actual slowness. Or something like that. Kind of reminds me of a praying mantis sometimes. Anyhow, it’s very fun to watch

    Stopping teams from hunting JB on D and bench depth are the only obvious problems I see that seem hard to fix. I’m sure there are others I don’t see. If the flashes of beautiful ball movement become the norm, they crank up the 3s to full Celtic volume, and pick up the pace a notch or 12, this could be a really memorable group.

    100%…those are two glaring issues but most teams have at least one guy that is a fish on defense…so its not unique..

    Now that we have seen KAT play with power on the low block that seems like the best way to exploit the Celtics. KP has always been weak on bigger guys and Horford doesn’t have the height. They would have to send some doubles.

    @ShamsCharania
    Indiana Pacers C Isaiah Jackson has sustained a torn right Achilles tendon, league sources tell ESPN. Another Pacers big man lost this season to a non-contact Achilles tear.

    Damn, rough break for that kid, he’s an RFA after the season.. He was one of the guys I was hoping maybe we’d trade for once Hartenstein left, I thought maybe we could buy low on him.

    Leon should’ve held onto that Bucks pick, although the Bucks should still get into the playoffs in the current East as long as Giannis doesn’t ask out.

    Warriors blow a 31 point lead to the Rockets as they head to OT. Anything is possible.

    @PompeyOnSixers
    Oh, boy, people will remember the Sixers season for all the wrong reasons. The team just dropped to 1-4 and Joel Embiid assaulted a reporter in the locker room.

    When a follower said he was using hyperbole, Pompey replied and used the word “punched” to clarify what happened. (But then deleted the reply.)

    Tari Eason carries the torch for Knickerbloggers as the “play this guy more minutes and you won’t be disappointed” guy of yesteryear.

    RJ Barrett is playing well, not trying to start any issues here. Will RJs stats transfer to wins long term..

    I’m looking for any video on the Embiid thing. This comes days after he said Philly should never question if he really wants to play.

    Well, this offers some clarity that puts Embiid in a more forgiving light:

    @ShamsCharania
    76ers’ Joel Embiid got in an altercation with a columnist following tonight’s game in Philadelphia. Embiid took issue with a recent column that referenced his late brother and son, and Embiid shoved the columnist. No punch.

    @DJAceNBA

    In 112 minutes, the Karl-Anthony Towns/Jalen Brunson pairing has a:

    130.22 OffRtg
    113.57 DefRtg
    ——————-
    +16.65 NetRtg

    Towns has a 73 TS% with Brunson on the floor.

    Educate, I was noticing that as well re RJ. It possibly helps that the second best player on that team right now is a guy who probably was beaten up daily in middle school for reasons I won’t go into, but at the same time his non-counting stats look pretty good at the moment (TS% .625, BPM 4.8, etc.). Of course I don’t expect his 3pt shooting to stay at .529 either, and we’ve all seen Good RJ streaks before. But looking at the Toronto numbers from last year, things do seem to be trending up. We’ll see, and if so good for him.

    I’m pretty damn happy with Wingstoppers, to be honest.

    A thought from the middle of the night that I will likely post in the new thread if I can ever get back to sleep:

    While I have no real regrets about the Mikal trade, because I think he fits this team from the glove, part of the reason the deal was seemingly made was because Leon and his team decided there was no point waiting for a true “star trade” when all the potential targets seemed very firmly entrenched in their various homes. And now Milwaukee is imploding, and there’s a chance Giannis gets moved. And also, that top-4-protected Bucks pick feels like it could be the single best pick we sent Brooklyn in that deal.

    But OKC can, as discussed, more easily blow Milwaukee away with a package, and it remains unclear whether Giannis still has bad blood towards the Knicks over how we “mistreated” his brother, and sometimes you just have to go all in instead of waiting.

    Something tells me OKC will not pull the trigger on Giannis. I don’t think their owner will want to pay him, SGA, and Chet. SGA/Chet/Jalen is considerably less expensive and still plenty good.
