Ex-New York Knicks 1st-Round Pick Signs With New Team

I would really love to find a way to move up in this draft and to land Zach Edey. He’s been proving people wrong at every level, and is intelligent, a tireless worker, and has a mean streak…definitely in the Thibs mold. I see him as a Mark Eaton clone on D with much better offense. Now true, the game has moved away from that kind of C, but in a league with guys like Jokic, Embiid, and now Wemby, and with guys like Clingan coming in, he moves well enough to present some problems for those guys. I think he’s just going to get better and better, and in this shitty draft, he might be the guy who teams rue passing over. I like him WAAAAAY more than Clingan, who seems like more of a potential stiff to me.
Agreed, Z. Not that I don’t like Clingan..but all this hype feels alot like Bryant Reeves to me. He’s got the measurable and the movement at that size, but I think Danny Hurley just used him perfectly. I don’t see him as a true top 10 pick. This draft kinda makes him look better than he probably is. Talented kid though with that size and ability to move. You know where he’d fit perfectly? GS or Toronto. Maybe even Milwaukee and NY. He needs a coach that’s gonna use him like Hurley did.
But yeah..I want Edey for this squad too. Especially if we’re contemplating moving Mitch to be able to afford retaining Hartenstein
It’s not an easy call between the two because Edey has two years of experience on Clingan, but to me, that makes Edey more NBA-ready. On top of that, Clingan is clearly out of reach, whereas if Edey is available in the late teens, it might be possible to trade up for him.
Alas, probably not gonna happen.
I doubt it happens, but if the Knicks punt both their 1st round picks, I may have to avoid this blog for a couple of weeks.š¤£
I have moved through the seven stages of grief into the āacceptanceā phase when it comes to the Knicks punting their 1RPs.
I donāt even bother looking at draft prospects anymore. It has saved me a lot of time and now I have much more time to watch guitar pedal videos. Iām ok, youāre ok.
Vecenie’s big board is out. Definitely worth checking if you have access to The Athletic.
Downgrade: Mogbo
Vecenie confirmed my growing suspicion that he doesn’t do a great with play recognition on defense, which is pretty important for a defensive anchor. His production dropped more than other prospects against high-end competition.
No Change: Isaiah Crawford
Vecenie put him at 56. I’m probably in the 40s on him. Some amateur draft guys grade him as an end of 1st/early 2nd.
Downgrade: Ryan Dunn
I believe less and less that his offense ever comes around. Has zero offensive feel, can’t dribble, can’t pass, can’t shoot. Frank 2.0.
Upgrade: Yves Missi
No new info but he protects the rim and Thibs runs the show. Overexcited shotblocker like Mitch was.
You know what? After reading that article above about Perk wanting the Knicks to go after AD, I think that’s a move I could get behind. It’s weird because I trust Randle more than I trust Davis. But if there’s ever a player to gamble on for lightning in a bottle or a great couple of seasons out of, it would be Davis in NY. For one- he’d rarely have to play C as a Knick, so that might keep him available more often than not. And two- when he’s healthy, he’s still a top 7-ish player at worst. You gamble on that if he’s ret-to-leave Bron. Can you imagine the defense with he and OG manning the forward spots? SHEEEESH! I wouldn’t be mad at all if that ends up being something the team pursues this offseason.
I mean acquiring AD would be completely awesome. If the Lakers are open to trading him though, youād have to think he ends up on OKC. Heād actually be an ideal way for them to use their asset pile.
SGA-Caruso-Jaylen Williams-AD-Holmgren would lay waste to the NBA.
“SGA-Caruso-Jaylen Williams-AD-Holmgren would lay waste to the NBA.”
Doogie is clearly not awake yet…
Jalen not Jaylen. And definitely not Jaylin.
Amazing that you said that.
Keep in mind Iām still an intermediate level guitar player, but I bought a few pedals, set up a pedal board, and was watching pedal videos yesterday on how to get the sound I want. Now I suck in new ways. š¤£
Best thing that can happen in this draft is OKC drafting Jaylin Williams
Itās crazy that Clingan could go #1, but apparently Quin Snyder loves him. He would be nice to have backing up Trae on defense, though. As for Edey, he could easily go in the late lottery now, so I donāt see him falling to us, but I think someone interesting will if we just stay put.
Relevant to us from Vecenie:

“Downgrade: Ryan Dunn
I believe less and less that his offense ever comes around. Has zero offensive feel, canāt dribble, canāt pass, canāt shoot. Frank 2.0.”
I dunno what Ryan Dunn is, but I know what he ain’t. He ain’t Frank Ntilikina. Frank was 100% hype about two things: Wingspan and his U18 MVP. I watched tons of his film looking for something positive, and there was nothing, and I mean nothing that stood out, including on defense. He was a slow-twitch athlete with no fire to his game on either end. It was a joke to think that he could ever become an NBA-level starter, much less a PG.
This is not the case with Ryan Dunn. He is a defensive menace who can guard 1-5, and I think he will become at least as good on D as OG as he fills out and gets experience. He has both tangibles and intangibles on the defensive end that you simply can’t teach, like DPoY-type stuff. Just about every serious analyst starts by saying that he’s the best defensive player in this draft. To me, he’s exactly the kind of player you target in the late first round. He only has to develop a rudimentary offensive game to be a rotation player, and has shown some brief flashes of one. His shooting mechanics from the waist down are horrific, and to me, that’s a much more fixable problem than a waist-up issue. He looks more wildly inconsistent than inept. Let him work with a Drew Hanlon-type for a couple of years and figure out a few rudimentary, repeatable things to use in games, starting of course with a corner three but also some floaters and back-to-basket stuff. He can drive in a straight line and has a nose for the ball on the offensive glass, so all he really needs to do is average 10 relatively efficient points per 36. What he lacks on O, he will make up for on the defensive end by lowering the efficiency of whoever he guards…especially the high-usage wings…the Tatums and Browns of the world. Put him on the floor with OG, Randle, DDV and Brunson and let him just move the ball and set screens.
I’ve been like this the past couple years (well, minus the guitar pedal vids) but I got sucked in this year because the draft itself is so weird and now I’m going to be pissed when we do something stupid, it sucks.
Same here on the guitar pedal videos. Iām haplessly twirling the knobs on my new Origin Effects Cali 76 compressor wondering if their demo has tricked me into buying it š
And to the Thunderās balance sheet.
AD would be 33 y/o with 2 years, $120MM still due the summer they have to pay Chet & Williams.
They are not adding a 4th max player. We can safely stop projecting that.
And I love AD to the Knicks. Mentioned him months ago when someone asked who your dream acquisitions are.
Heās a center now, though. Donāt think thereās any going back to the 4 for him.
I’ll rephrase it. Ryan Dunn could easily fail to match Frank Ntilikina’s offensive output.
Dunn averaged 10pts/36 and only managed a .564 TS%. He has 1 ast/36 to 1.1 TOs. He shot 20% from 3 and 53.2% from the line. That’s abysmal.
Coincidentally, Fred Katz addressed a potential Markkanen trade in his mailbag this morning:
Not the best logic in his argument. Heās a perfect fit but not a big enough star? Please. Heād become a star here very quickly. And being the same age as Brunson, OG, Hartenstein, and Donte means these guys would have 6 or more prime years together.
In addition, with the salary reduction (assuming we waive Bojan then) weād get to use the full MLE, the BAE, and we could still pay Burks and Precious to come back for depth. Plus we keep both our draft picks this year and next year. Sign me up!
But if heās right about the Jazz wanting to extend him, oh well. I had thought they wanted to tank.
Yeah this is a fun year because, while there are no obvious stars, there a a lot of players Iād be happy to gamble on with our 3 picks.
Grab a senior like Scheierman? Sure. A high-upside euro like Dadiet? Yes! A freshman who was miscast in college like Edwards? Why not?
Iām also fine with safer picks like Missi. I can even understand a trade out, but I hope we donāt trade a 1st for a 37-year-old 9th manā¦ that seems a tad short sighted.

Definitely abysmal. If he wasn’t, he’d be drafted in the top 5 of this shitty draft.
I’d be fine with Filipowski, Dunn, and Shead….I think all three of those guys can get on the floor and have a positive impact in a minor role right away. I’d just as soon bet on Dunn becoming a cromulent corner 3 shooter as on Kolek being able to stay on the floor defensively or Missi topping out at anything more than a Bismack Biyombo clone. But who knows? Ultimately, I’m just hoping to have a couple of really exciting prospects to root for in Summer League.
I don’t want to do any business whatsoever with Danny Ainge.
This sounds like the talent scout who watched Fred Astaireās first screen test: ācanāt sing, canāt act, can dance a littleā.
i think i may have missed that part in the post…
and a warm sÄturnÄ« diÄs to you all…
when comparing julius’ stats to lauri’s – are there a few key stats to focus in on?
why is lauri a better fit on the knicks than julius?
lauri’s an interesting young player with a lot of different skills…i’m sort of, kind of lauri curious in regards to julius…
i hope next season we figure out a good style of play for jalen off the ball…
32.5% usage seems waaaay too high for a remotely balanced offensive team…
not that julius is the shot creating answer (his turnovers are still high), but he helps…especially in the paint…
hopefully his ankle and shoulder stay fixed for a while…
i agree with z-man, just like the asking price out of utah for mitchell was super high, so will the price for lauri…
edit: if OG returns, i expect him to get his minutes bringing up the ball and/or initiating the offense…
he’s gonna get paid not just for his defense…OG wants pointzz too…i don’t blame him…
Shead would be interesting. . .another small guard but he’s a wrecking ball and he can really pass
I agree with Geo: Healthy Julius is like 92% the player Lauri is, so why burn three firsts for that swap? I fear we might need a more significant upgrade if we were to trade Randle.
Compressor pedals are tricky. Most classic guitar compressor pedals (I have a Keely that fits this description) are pedals that really clamp down on the attack, giving you what Iād describe as ābite.ā Useful in funk applications. Cory Wong, an icon of funk playing in this era, swears by his Wampler Super Ego pedal. Said he tried every compressor pedal under the Sun and went with that one. What he likes about that pedal is that it doesnāt thin out oneās tone, and in fact seems to fatten up his tone whilst compression.
Compressors in the 1176 style (FET compressors) are trendy at the moment. The 1176 is the most iconic recording studio compressor, and it comes in rack format. They are ubiquitous in recording studios. To me, the 1176 is as much of an EQ as it is a compressor, as it adds a distinctive kind of āsparkleā and clarity to the source sound. But putting an 1176 in pedal format seems a little counterintuitive to me, since what you are usually compressing with an 1176 is a MIKED signalā youāre usually compressing the signal coming through the microphone that is on the speaker cabinet. Compressing the signal as part of a pedal chain before it comes through the amp is not really a traditional use of an 1176 compressor.
But I dunno, maybe it sounds cool anyway! Itās really that clear, sparkly character that makes an 1176 a magical box, so if the Origin Effects pedal is getting you that sound, you got a winner.
my eyes almost got a bit dusty, front page of espn.com features angel and caitin…that is so cool…
Itās mostly about shooting & money, Geo.
Randleās a 32% 3P shooter in the three seasons since his empty-gym outlier. The spacing weād have with Brunson, Donte, OG, Markkanen would be devastating.
Lauriās also 3 years younger. Though I did just notice he has an OG-like availability record.
The money is huge, though. With Randle & Bojan at $50MM we are too close to the 2nd apron to afford depth.
With Markkanen at $18MM, we could add someone like Caleb Martin with the MLE, someone like Dennis Smith Jr with the BAE, bring back Precious & Burks, and use both our picks.
thanks hubie, i get the money and better shooter thing…
julius versus lauri…if his shoulder can hold up, i like julius’ physical play in terms of rebounding and going to the rim…
also, lauri’s not a good defender…i don’t think of him as soft, but more a finesse type player…plus the assets to acquire lauri…
well, after mikal i would have liked caruso, that’s not happening…we shall see with OG, hopefully it doesn’t hinge on PG13…
Thx @JK47. Always appreciate your music and hoops posts.
I got the newest Cali 76 pedal like a month ago. The goals (with opposite settings of course):
1) I wanted to get a bit more sustain out of the single coil āhigh gainsā on my Rickenbacker 360, ideally for a fatter blues/jazz sound on the neck. This does work surprisingly well and still keeps the sparkle (as you point out) of the already chiming tone of the Rick. Iām just not convinced itās the right effect choice compared to a high quality reverb. Or else I should prolly just pony up the money for a proper ES 335 and quit pretending with the Rick. Haha.
2) The other goal is to better simulate that funky quack of a proper Strat like you said. The pedal does indeed help my Rick do this if I squeeze the attack/release settings. I like Cory. I think you got me listening by mentioning Wulfpeck (?) which I realize is a kind of backwards way to find him.
Best thing IMO, I can dial in the dry sound, so the effect doesnāt ever take over as a binary āone soundā if you know what I mean. I can make it do as little or as much as I wish. Nice.
Overall the pedal is also beautifully made, but it may be too subtle for my amateur ears, and is prolly overkill for me just messing around with friends. Haha.
Thx again for your guitar thoughts.
Oh, and Knicks-wise, letās draft some new talent. Trade up. Get someone special. I feel like all the vets are āknownā knowns and not particularly exciting. Even in a weak (?) draft, I want Leon to show some skill on the draft side of his ledger.
great day to stay out of the sun , 105 out here today…will wait til 7pm to head to the park with the boys…
good day to stay inside, stay cool, and listen to some music talk š
edit: despite the sun, the AQI is in the 40’s…i don’t really understand what the numbers mean…
yep, thought so…Middlebury, Vermont, AQI = 15…that air must smell so good…oh such wonderful air…
trying to think of a spot with better air…maybe along the ocean…
take a deep breathe for us dan…
