    Reposting (with a little editing).

Barcelona did sweep Real Madrid in the best-of-5 ACB Finals.

Rokas played well in the series, especially in game 3 (13 PTS 4 AST, but he had 7 assists in game-1* and scored 10 PTS in Game-2).
He raised his game when it counted and that’s a positive sign.

Barca has a budget problem (they will waive Mirotic despite him still having 2 years on his contract) so maybe they’ll be happy to get Rokas’ NBA-buyout dollars and let him go (or, given his age, they can try to keep him and let Sato, Abrines or Kuric free).

He could be a low cost alternative at the backup-PG position (with a lot to learn obviously) or a filler in a bigger trade…

    *
In Game-1 Barcelona had 7 men in double figure. Rokas wasn’t one of them (2 PTS on 1-4 shooting) but he rode the hot hands again and again (hence his 7 assists) in an excellent “Passing PG” performance.

With no draft pick, we definitely have roster space for him, but that could change.

The Marc Stein newsletter from last night seems to imply that if the Clips move Paul George, it would be for a package centered around a high draft pick. But for argument’s sake, your Question of the Day:

How much would you be willing to give up, in players, picks, and swaps, for Paul George?

How much would you be willing to give up, in players, picks, and swaps, for Paul George?

33 years old, injury prone (he didn’t play more than 56 games in 4 years), 46 million this year, PO for 49 M next year.

Nothing. Zero. Nada. Zilch. Nulla. Rien. Nichts.

    P.S.
If we would get him I’ll root for him, I’m a Knicks fan… 🙂

At most I would consider giving up at most our two “worst” protected picks and a young player (Deuce? Obi?) plus filler (Fournier? Rose?) for him. But first I would need a full disclosure of his medical situation. In theory, he’s exactly what we need, but only if he has two good wheels. You kind of have to kick the tires at least, no?

If we don’t bring Rokas over this year, then I don’t think he ever comes over.

if we trade IQ, Rokas would be very welcome, since Deuce doesn’t seem capable of running an offense at the moment, even in spot minutes. So we’d need a new backup PG. Or even a better third-string backup PG, since I imagine Leon would acquire a cheap veteran to run the second unit.

I agree with Max. George is never returning to form at his age. Not worth giving up assets for him.

I’m really on the fence re: LaVine. Despite his flaws, he might be a good fit, and there are not a lot of better options out there. Plus, he’s in his prime and replaces our weakest link (RJ).

Brunson/Grimes/LaVine/Randle/Mitch with a bench of Quick/Hart/Hartenstein/PF X is a pretty hard rotation to complain about.

I think we should accept that RJ isn’t going anywhere, at least not while Thibs is coach.

If LaVine is acquired, it’s not going to be for RJ, and he will most likely replace Grimes in the starting lineup, not RJ.

RJ was the centerpiece of the proposed Spida package, Z-man, so I wouldn’t be so adamant about that. Thibs likes RJ in part because RJ so relentlessly attacks the basket, which is a key piece of any Thibs offense. But LaVine does that, too, and is better than RJ at every single phase of offense. I think Thibs would live with it. Especially since he loves Grimes, and speaks of him more effusively than almost any other player on the team.

“RJ was the centerpiece of the proposed Spida package, Z-man, so I wouldn’t be so adamant about that.”

That was before RJ was extended, and before he played “reasonably well” under playoff pressure. I also think that RJ may have been the reason why the deal didn’t happen, in other words, if he was included, the draft pick haul would have had to be significantly less. From my pov, the Spida negotiations were sort of all over the place, and I don’t have much confidence in what was officially offered and what was rejected.

Beyond that, RJ is a legit 3, while LaVine is more of a 2. A lineup with Brunson, LaVine and Grimes doesn’t seem balanced to me.

Also, my gut feeling is that the FO strongly believes in RJ’s potential, probably with Thibs as his main cheerleader, and want to give him one more season to prove that he’s a solid player on a value deal. As such, I strongly believe that barring an absolute blockbuster deal for a top-10 kind of player, RJ will be on the roster next year. I don’t sense any urgency at all to move him beyond bloggers and pundits.

Paul George is only good for 55 games a season and has a questionable playoffs resume. On the other hand, he’d immediately be our best player if healthy and if there were no regression on his part–he’s still really good. You have to kick the tires on him, for sure, especially given his fit with us.

Max I’d give up, if reasonably healthy (i.e., would play 50 – 60 games in the regular season and not be injured for the playoffs): RJ, Obi, Fournier, a far-off pick swap, and a protected first.

Yet another Question of the Day: Do you intend to watch the draft live tomorrow night? I’m not going to, both because I have other things I need to see for work and/or family, but also because I don’t really care unless the Knicks have a pick. And there’s no way to know that for sure until things are underway.

Actually, that leads us to a third Question: How confident are you that the Knicks will trade into this draft?

I’m going to try and watch the draft live, though we’ll see if my girlfriend is happy about that.

Knicks will trade into this draft either by trading Obi or doling out one of their protected firsts.

I don’t expect the Knicks to trade into the draft but hope I am pleasantly surprised.

Reasonably confident that they will do some draft day deal(s) but think it unlikely that they wind up actually making a pick in this draft (even if the dealings involve trading into this draft).

Do you intend to watch the draft live tomorrow night?

No, so there’s a minuscule chance I’ll be pleasantly surprised the next morning…

Haven’t paid as much attention this year, but here is my 1st round draft big board:

    1. Victor
    2. Scoot
    3. Cam Whitmore
    4. Anthony Black
    5. Taylor Hendricks
    6. Brandon Miller
    7. Bilal Coulibaly
    8. Amen T
    9. Ausar T
    10. Gradey Dick
    11. Jarace Walker
    12. Brandin Podziemski
    13. Leonard Miller
    14. Kobe Bufkin
    15. Cason Wallace
    16. Jaime Jacquez
    17. Keyonte George
    18. Jordan Hawkins
    19. Dereck Lively
    20. James Nnaji
    21. Noah Clowney
    22. Jalen Hood-Schifino
    23. Sensabaugh
    24. Kris Murray
    25. Maxwell Lewis
    26. Amari Bailey
    27. Trayce Jackson-Davis
    28. Colby Jones
    29. Dariq Whitehead
    30. Jett Howard/Keyontae Johnson (latter higher if medicals clear–also would be great on the Knicks!)

i’m going to the draft.. a friends always gets access to these events since he’s connected to nets staff… but it’s a fun event since it’s mostly diehards and basketball nerds from all over congregating which makes it sort of a unique thing … and it’s probably the best place to actually enjoy the draft and not get spoiled on every pick (but happens anyway)…

the draft itself is a great experience but more of a slow burn that doesn’t really pay off for awhile but for me it’s must see….

Does anyone know how to listen to the live draft on the radio? I’ll be driving at the time.

Also, it sounds like the Hawks are trying to move off DeAndre Hunter. His numbers are lower than I expected, but he could be a nice defensive wing for us at the right price.

Hunter’s average $22.5 million over the next four seasons, on an escalating deal. He’s averaged a little over 50 games a season in his career, and even if you take out his really injury-plagued second year, he’s averaging 61 games over the other three.

The idea of Hunter would fit nicely in with this roster. The actuality of Hunter is something I’m not excited about, even if Atlanta is giving him away for salary relief.

I would prefer we do NOTHING than some of the things being tossed around by the media. We spent years selectively drafting players, adding free agents, and making trades that made some sense. Sure, there were some mistakes along the way, but that always happens. At least they were small mistakes.

We now have a young competitive team with upside and excess assets. Yet all I see are trades for old players on the downside, injured players, guys that don’t really fit, guys with horrible contracts etc…

    WTF?

We are all anxious to take the next step, but better to do nothing than the wrong thing. We are not at the emergency stage yet where the window is closing. I’d be fine adding some depth to the bench, maybe a 3 point shooter or backup PG if we can’t land an ideal player that’s good on both sides and young enough to be part of our long tern plan as well as making us better now. It’s not even like if we don’t make a deal now we are stuck like this for the whole season. Other players will shake loose at the deadline. If guys like George, LaVine, Beal, and Towns etc… are our options, I’d do nothing.

We know what we need. There are several paths there, but none of these guys are the solution unless they involve multiple deals.

I’m a “NO” on Hunter also. I liked him coming out of college. He’s shown signs of becoming a productive player, but his development has been interrupted by injuries. Still, that’s a lot of years and money for a player that I’m not even sure is a net positive.

How confident are you that the Knicks will trade into this draft?

Very confident that we will not.

Wow, why does Hunter have that contract?? I get that he was a high pick but sheesh…

Bruce Brown opted out, unsurprisingly. Wonder if he’ll be able to get more than the mid-level. He’s probably not a great target for us, in that a lot of his value comes from cutting and, as discussed yesterday, our offense doesn’t feature a lot of cutting. But he should be in demand after that playoff run.

I like Hunter and would be happy with a reasonable move for him, maybe involving Obi.

I’d say 75% confidant they trade into it. But it could be minor, like basically buying a second pick from some team that has a lot of picks.

    7. Bilal Coulibaly

this is another one i’m mystified about but i probably have the least info on… i’m not really seeing what everyone else is seeing… is he really this good?

I like Hunter and would be happy with a reasonable move for him, maybe involving Obi.

    Hunter is a SF.

    Who goes to the bench?

That would be a lot of money for a lot of years to pay both RJ and Hunter when one will be the backup SF. If you move RJ to SG and put Grimes on the bench, we’d have Grimes and J-Hart both on the bench. I think there’s at least a reasonable chance Grimes is going to be a better two way player than both RJ and Hunter eventually. I don’t think they want to trade him or bench him unless it’s for some real star player. They didn’t want to trade him for Mitchell. And I don’t think they are going to trade J-Hart either.

Doing this could involve multiple moves.

If we were moving RJ in one bigger deal (for who I don’t know) and adding Hunter that could make some sense, but I have no ideas.

Do you intend to watch the draft live tomorrow night?

I was gonna ask the same, but I’m leaning towards no. It takes way too long for a speculative pick.

How confident are you that the Knicks will trade into this draft?

I think they do. Maybe Obi for a late 1st and a 2nd or a 1st and a future protected 1st that everyone hates. If they don’t it’s because nobody valued Obi enough. Wouldn’t be surprised if they traded a future pick to get a rookie this year.

How much would you be willing to give up, in players, picks, and swaps, for Paul George?

I’ll give the very unhelpful answer that if he’s healthy you’ve underpaid and if he’s hurt you’ve overpaid. I’m leaning towards him being hurt more often than not.

Obi’s a useful player for us and late first round picks are probably not going to turn into a useful player, so I’m not thrilled about trading him. But maybe the Knicks want to do him a solid and will do so if they can get something reasonable back

I’d say 75% confidant they trade into it. But it could be minor, like basically buying a second pick from some team that has a lot of picks.

It makes some sense to try to pick up an early 2nd round pick. We have some depth needs at the back of the bench. Early 2nd round picks are not much worse than late 1st round picks in terms of expectations. Plus you don’t get tied up into a longer contract. If you strike out you don’t have dead money on the bench. You just move on. If I could, I’d buy two of them and double my chances of getting lucky and coming up with a player that can contribute.

I liked Hunter coming out of college but his inconsistent play, his injuries and that contract make it a hard no from me

Bruce Brown opted out, unsurprisingly. Wonder if he’ll be able to get more than the mid-level

I’m not sure Brown or Hunter shoot enough to fix our shooting problem. I would be highly interested in pairing Brown with Hartenstein, it’d probably require us playing Hart at the backup 4 spot, which I like but I’d like to try but unsure it works.

And I’m not sure he gets more than the mid-level but that seems like a pretty good value for him.

He could be a low cost alternative at the backup-PG position

We could use a 3rd string PG. Deuce can be a valuable player if his shot falls, but he doesn’t really look like a PG. I’m skeptical it happens at this point, but who knows. I half expect us to go after Montero over him. Either one could potentially slot in next to IQ if they insist on a rotation spot.

I would like us to bring Montero and back and bring that kid we have stashed in spain over as well.

we could use a PF Thibs would play more than Obi, I have no idea if there are any good candidates in the late parts of the draft for that.

Hunter is the epitome of a positionless player. If healthy he can slot into the 2,3, or 4 pretty seamlessly, depending on whether you wanted to go big or small. I see him mostly as another piece to insure against losing top of rotation players in a trade for a star.

I would give two unprotected picks, obi, and filler for George. I know he is a huge risk, but he would be such a great fit.

Maybe Randle for Paul George is the move? Then again, it’s probably a lateral one for both teams…

Maybe Randle for Paul George is the move? Then again, it’s probably a lateral one for both teams…

I’d worry we wouldn’t even make the playoffs with PG playing 50 games a year instead of Randle basically leading the league in mp. And if we do we’re playing a 1 or 2 seed.

Hunter looked great his sophomore season in 700 minutes and has looked bad since. He also shot 58% from 2 that year. So yeah.

I thought he would be better. Better than RJ and better than he has turned out. In particular, he doesn’t seem like a high impact defender.

When KP didn’t work out, we signed the guy drafted immediately after him. And that didn’t work out.
When Frank didn’t work out, we traded for the guy drafted immediately after him. And that didn’t work out.
And since RJ has disappointed, please let’s not go after the guy drafted immediately after him.

But…since Kevin Knox didn’t work out, it would be great if we had a shot at getting the guy drafted immediately after him.

I’m at a season ticket holders event at Scarpetta, 20 people at a table with John Starks.

    Per Shams:

Updated financial figures for the 2023-24 NBA season nears the 10 percent maximum increase, league informed teams today:

    – $136 million salary cap, $2M higher than prior projection
    – $165 million luxury tax level, $3M higher than prior

Katz with a sequel to his IQ extension story, this time talking about Obi: https://theathletic.com/4628529/2023/06/21/knicks-obi-toppin-extension/

The article will probably get noticed mostly for the story at the beginning about Obi and Thibs having a prolonged argument after the Game 4 loss in Miami. (Which they patched up the next day, Katz says.) But most if it is about the conundrum of what to pay a guy whose role on this team is so limited by both the roster and the coach’s philosophy.

    On the one hand:

Ten of the 15 people polled for this story valued Toppin within shouting distance of the $12.2 million midlevel exception. Those 10 ranged from $10 million to $15 million a year. The largest suggested contract (in terms of both total money and average annual value) came from one person who deemed $60 million over four seasons fair.

    On the other:

Five people in the poll suggested seven-figure salaries for Toppin, but not all of them considered him a player of that caliber. Some participants were conflicted, acknowledging a reality of the business: You can pay your stars a million dollars a minute, but you can’t hand that much to your role players, especially with far more restrictive luxury-tax policies on the way.

“I don’t think an extension makes sense there,” said the executive who advocated for the lowest average annual value in this poll: only $20 million over four years, a figure Toppin surely would not accept.

Again, it sounds from all the reports like Obi and the Knicks will part ways over the next few months. I wonder if his new team will try to extend him, or let him play out the season to see if there really is more there than Thibs allowed him to show.

Godspeed, Obi-Wan. I loved you completely irrationally.

That was before RJ was extended, and before he played “reasonably well” under playoff pressure. I also think that RJ may have been the reason why the deal didn’t happen, in other words, if he was included, the draft pick haul would have had to be significantly less.

Woj says we offered RJ, Quickley, 2 unprotected picks, the MIL pick, two seconds, and two swaps for Mitchell. That doesn’t exactly scream that RJ is sacrosanct. In fact, I’d say it’s below 50/50 he plays out his extension here.

Re: Paul George, there are some disturbing trends. His BPM has declined for five consecutive years and he hasn’t even approached 70 games in a season since 2018-2019. That said, he’d still be a great fit and EPM still thinks he’s a top 25 player.

I think I’d do RJ, Fournier, and all four of our protected picks (DAL/DET/WAS/MIL). We’d still have all of our own picks and swaps to play with and would project to be pretty god damn good.

I just read this in Hollinger’s mock draft: “ Sacramento has a size gap on its depth chart, with a lot of smaller wings but only free agent Harrison Barnes as a true four”. This seems to make them an Obi candidate.

We could trade RJ, Fournier, and all 4 protected picks for PG-13, and trade Rose, Hartenstein, Grimes, and 2 of our own picks for LaVine.

    Just sayin’.

TNFH, I’d like to keep the Milwaukee pick. I think it could be pretty good.

I think Rose will be able to do a better trade than the ones mentioned here.

Well, there’s one fewer late pick from a team with multiple firsts out there:

    @wojespn
The Denver Nuggets are trading 2024 first-round pick and 2023 40th pick to the Indiana Pacers for No. 29 and 32 on Thursday, sources tell ESPN.

Not that it has anything to do with Paul George’s value going forward, but the last team to trade for him gave up SGA and the Jalen Williams pick on top of 4 more picks and 2 swaps.

Kinda crazy how much better they’d be right now if they didn’t make the trade.

    “The grind never stops” -Denver

I know Pacers were put forward as a potential Obi destination, including by me, but there are a number of PFs mocked around 7 that made it less likely unless they really liked Obi or a wing at 7.

@Zman- hope you enjoy sounds amazing.

Let us know if you get any good starks stories.

Scarpetta does this Bone Marrow Agnolotti that is one of my favorite things ever. The only problem is it’s really too rich to eat the whole thing yourself but it’s the perfect thing to share.

    More from Shams:

Sources: Wizards, Celtics and Clippers are in strong talks on a trade that would send Kristaps Porzingis to Boston, Marcus Morris and draft compensation to Washington and Malcolm Brogdon to Los Angeles. Sides are still working through details and Porzingis’ $36M player option.

KP to Celtics is pretty spicy, I must say.

Went to Scarpetta a few years back and it was actually really really good. I was surprised how good, not sure why. Good to hear it hasn’t lost its fastball.

KP on Boston is definitely an upgrade, but I’m not sure by how much. It definitely adds more outside shooting and scoring punch, but I’m not sure it fixes Boston’s main problem: which is that their two primary ball handlers are subpar at it and the offense is muck as a result.

Also, the defense will take a hit if Williams is benched—will be interested to see how this plays out if the trade goes through.

BOS trying to sell high on Brogdon? He’s had injury problems his whole career. Then again, so has KP.

WAS in full fire-sale mode a year later than they should have been!

I don’t get the impression this front office is going to overpay for the wrong guy. They obviously could have put together a better Beal package than PHX (which was shit) but seem to be cognizant of the fact that you need to be spending those max dollars on actual max players.

But who knows, maybe the “Brunson-PG-LaVine” Big 3 isn’t just a bad dream? (Yikes)

Yeah, I’m sure we could outbid Boston for KP, but Rose seemingly doesn’t want to… probably worried about the injury history.

KP was top-20 in BPM, EPM, and RAPTOR last year. It’s a significant upgrade if he’s healthy and I figure Boston has the guys to give him adequate rest.

I think I’d do RJ, Fournier, and all four of our protected picks (DAL/DET/WAS/MIL). We’d still have all of our own picks and swaps to play with and would project to be pretty god damn good.

I was against PG but that’s a solid trade.

Randle is a regular season workhorse who can handle PG missing half the season.

PG is a secondary ballhandler who takes Randle out of that position in the postseason.

The way teams typically handle Randle (easily) in the postseason is by putting their biggest good forward on him. Well if you do that, PG is going to kill you. If you put that guy on PG, Randle is finally unleashed.

If you have enough big forwards to guard both, we’re fucked, but very few teams do.

I have been talked into it.

But I would still save that Washington pick for Deni.

When KP was traded to Dallas, I remember Ainge throwing a little hissy fit because he wasn’t even aware he was on the market and would have been interested. Ainge is obviously not there anymore, but there may be people left over from that management team that still like KP.

I think it’s a good fit for Boston and KP. KP will get to play with a serious contender on a smart organization and they are adding another solid scoring option that can also space the floor.

If the Wizards get some draft compensation back or any kind of decent asset it was a good deal for them too.

When the Wizards gave up Dinwiddie he was playing poorly and on a hard to move contract. Bertans was also on a terrible contract. They got rid of their trash, got a very good season+ out of KP, resurrected some value and may get at something back despite KP’s high salary contract.

Dallas sold at the bottom. More Cuban magic. lmao

The Boston trade just makes me more irked at IQ losing Sixth Man to a guy that Boston wouldn’t even use in their closeout lineups and traded away after his first year on the team.

    1 Brunson
    2 Grimes
    3 George
    4 Randle
    5 Mitch

    Bench: IQ, Hart, Avdija, Hartenstein

And we keep all our picks? Yeah, I’d take that. The death lineup we could run would be sick.

The whole “Will Charlotte draft Scoot?” thing is funny, as I seriously think it’s one of those deals where, like, the rest of the NBA is sort of shaming the Hornets into making the right call and taking Scoot with that pick.

I think Rose will be able to do a better trade than the ones mentioned here.

    He hasn’t made one yet.

Hey wait a minute. This means I may actually get to see Gallinari and KP on the court together next year at MSG! Unfortunately, they will be nailing 3s for Boston.

KP is definitely a clear upgrade.. one that might not be super obvious on paper given that boston was already #2 on offense… but he gives them a bit of what horford and williams give them all in one player with some ability to score when needed… they could be quite scary actually….

The whole “Will Charlotte draft Scoot?” thing is funny, as I seriously think it’s one of those deals where, like, the rest of the NBA is sort of shaming the Hornets into making the right call and taking Scoot with that pick.

Hollinger made a particularly brutal point today, comparing Charlotte not drafting Scoot because he overlaps with LaMelo to Portland taking Sam Bowie over some guy who they feared couldn’t play with Clyde Drexler.

Actually, Strat, it sounds like Gallo is now headed to Washington in the latest trade concept.

This means I may actually get to see Gallinari and KP on the court together next year at MSG!

On the court seems kinda optimistic (or I guess pessimistic for us)

Actually, Strat, it sounds like Gallo is now headed to Washington in the latest trade concept.

    Noooooooo!

The Wizards will probably buy Gallo out.

Hey wait a minute, that means the Knicks can add him to our bench very cheaply and have a real stretch PF that is more of a diverse scoring threat that can also make some plays. Then we can trade Obi for some more draft capital.

    JUST DO IT !!!

    WHO SAYS NO?

    BRING BACK GALLO

Above all else, this administration seems to prefer guys who stay healthy. That cuts out a lot of players, though.

    I’d love it but I’m a little skeptical about a Thibs/Gallo pairing…

It really would be a nice temporary solution for us at SF/PF if they want to move Obi for a pick and also simultaneously add some excellent 3 point shooting and scoring off the bench.

If Randle got hurt, Thibs playing Gallo 48 minutes would be pretty funny. They’d have to take him to the locker room on a stretcher every night to get a shower and iced down.

    LOL

Thibs taking him out after every defensive mistake and putting him in on the next play will be funny too… 😀

Thibs taking him out after every defensive mistake and putting him in on the next play will be funny too… 😀

Good point. If he couldn’t handle Fournier, he won’t be able to handle Gallo’s slow beat up legs either. Bringing Gallo back has my vote anyway. 😉

    @ShamsCharania
The Clippers are expected to trade No. 30 in Thursday’s NBA Draft to the Wizards as part of this three-team trade, sources said. Washington nets a first-rounder for aiding Porzingis opt in-and-trade.

A good piece of business for Washington. And a much better return than they got for Beal, which speaks to what a terrible situation they were in with him.

kp trade is the rare 3 team deal that makes sense for all three. lots of injury risk but brogdon was more redundant for boston than kp would be, and also had injury risk. they had to fade horford’s aging curve somehow with rw3 not looking quite the same. brogdon is a great fit for the clippers if healthy, and they are such a health powerball already may as well add more vol.

We keep being told we sold ultra low on Porzingis and he keeps being traded for much less than we got back. Weird!

I’m betting Wash gets more assets when the details are fully revealed, Boston probably sends a pick to Wash also

They also need the deal done today if KP decides to opt out now that Beal is gone. So they can lean on Wash a bit

also someone is going to steal delon wright

Very underrated reason they struggled was Delon’s injuries

We keep being told we sold ultra low on Porzingis and he keeps being traded for much less than we got back. Weird!

His value changed after he got injured again in Dallas, but we almost certainly could have gotten more than we did if opening cap space wasn’t a major goal of the trade. Part of that deal was sending Hardaway’s and Lee’s bad contracts to Dallas. Without throwing in our trash contracts, we would have gotten back more pick value.

It’s Dallas that really screwed up. They took a shot he would be healthy and gave up two 1st rounders. That was at least a reasonable gamble. It sucked for them that he had problems again. But then they rushed him back, he looked terrible defensively, they misused him badly on offense, blamed him for their failings, destroyed his value, took trash contracts back for him, and now they are, well, who knows what the hell they are doing.

The Wizards got rid of 2 contracts they wanted no part of to Dallas to get him and seem to be getting back at least a 1st rounder now.

    @AdamHimmelsbach
According to multiple league sources, the completion of the Porzingis deal would likely mean that Grant Williams’s time in Boston has come to an end.

Anybody interested in him if he’d take the mid-level?

So their closeout lineup would be Smart, White, Brown, Tatum and KP?

    That is pretty interesting.

The Clippers needed to get Morris the fuck off their team, so for them to somehow flip him for Brogdon is really cool for them.

Very interesting trade and, as Ptmilo said, good for all the teams involved (health issues aside).

If someone explains the existence of timeouts to Mazzulla the Celtics could be scary…

I wonder if we can use Obi to hop in this Bos-LAC-Wiz trade to snag one of Mook or Rooster and that #30? Seems like that would be intriguing to Washington. One less player they’d have to buyout, and if it’s Gallinari that we snatch- it’s a guy coming off an injury that will be replaced by a young player to start for them in Obi

i’m going to the draft.. a friends always gets access to these events since he’s connected to nets staff… but it’s a fun event since it’s mostly diehards and basketball nerds from all over congregating which makes it sort of a unique thing … and it’s probably the best place to actually enjoy the draft and not get spoiled on every pick (but happens anyway)…

the draft itself is a great experience but more of a slow burn that doesn’t really pay off for awhile but for me it’s must see….

that’s so cool dj phan – have fun – during (if you can) and after, please let us know what you really enjoyed about the event 🙂

I’m at a season ticket holders event at Scarpetta, 20 people at a table with John Starks.

i literally just finished a couple slices of pizza – but i gotta say – that is one tasty menu they got there at Scarpetta…what did you get z-man?

If someone explains the existence of timeouts to Mazzulla the Celtics could be scary…

i was really impressed with how the celtics responded when he spoke out after his team went down 3-0 to the heat…

at the time some media folks were dogging him for sounding like such a noob coach…

his team responded though…no doubt he’ll be much better prepared (maybe even with the weird timeout situation he’s got going on) and ready his second season as a head coach…

I love Gallo, but I wouldn’t trade Obi for him.

In my scenario that’s not what would happen.

    1. Gallo goes to the Wizards for salary purposes in the KP deal.
    2. The Wizards buy out Gallo because they are tanking.
    3. We pick up Gallo very cheap because it’s my fantasy. 🙂
    4. We trade Obi for a 1st round pick.

If Rose is actually contemplating trading Obi because of some combination of Rose not wanting to extend him and him being unhappy with his minutes, we will need a backup PF. Gallo would become the backup SF/PF for a year or two and provide greater scoring versatility and 3 point shooting off the bench. That gives us time to find a permanent solution and in the mean time we have an extra 1st rounder.

Personally, I’m not on board with trading Obi at all, but if it’s going to happen, we could do worse than Gallo on a cheap contract giving us the shooting we need from the 3/4.

Not that I wouldn’t love Gallo back, but I suspect there’s better less injury prone players available

Kristaps Porzingis stats from his career-best season:

    Points Allowed Per Pick-and-Roll
    1. Anthony Davis (0.91)
    2. Steven Adams (0.92)
    3. Giannis Antetokounmpo (0.92)
    4. Kristaps Porzingis (0.93)
    5. Walker Kessler (0.93)

One of the best drop P&R defenders in the NBA. And on offense:

    Top Post Scorers
    1. Kristaps Porzingis (1.29)
    2. Nikola Jokic (1.26)
    3. Luka Doncic (1.15)
    4. Joel Embiid (1.11)
    5. Pascal Siakam (1.11)

Finally figured out how to score from the post. And from the perimeter attacking closeouts.

    Points Per Closeout
    1. Kawhi Leonard (1.32)
    2. Brandon Ingram (1.26)
    3. Luka Doncic (1.25)
    4. Harrison Barnes (1.24)
    5. Kristaps Porzingis (1.23)

    .

So KP shoots 40% on spot up 3s, kills defenses when he attacks closes out, can now post up with efficiency, and he’s a good defender. Health will always be a concern but he just had his best season of his career. This could be his prime.

Not that I wouldn’t love Gallo back, but I suspect there’s better less injury prone players available

I’d be ok with that as long as he can shoot 3s, score with some versatility, and we can get him cheaply.

Obi looks like Dennis Rodman on defense compared to Gallo at this point.

Obi looks like Dennis Rodman on defense compared to Gallo at this point.

    lmao

Yeah, but now that he’s had another ACL injury and is a year older since you’ve seen him last, maybe he’s feeling better with the year off. 🙂

Also, Dennis Rodman is 62 years old. 🙂

Supposedly, this is leaked audio of the argument Obi and Thibs had: Link

Kind of difficult to make out what’s being said but it’s there for whoever wants to listen.

Not sure how true this is, but I’m putting it out here:

“According to NY Post’s Brian Lewis, the New York Knicks had an offer in place to send forward Julius Randle to the Suns in exchange for Ayton. The deal reportedly also included two first-round picks.”

    Phoenix backed out, though.

Ok I guess that was a deal from last deadline that the writer thinks Phoenix should “revisit” so never mind.

juiciest back to back posts in knickerblogger history. that audio is too anodyne to be leaked by anyone but obi himself? feel like i would be the top ten percent of “okay with a randle trade” ness, but that rumor has got to be wrong, for the sake of a coherent universe.

Kristaps looks like he might have also figured out how to shoot after dribbling. Only took six years.

That’s an interesting frontcourt for the Celtics you’d think they would have to be shopping timelord or horford

That’s an interesting frontcourt for the Celtics you’d think they would have to be shopping timelord or horford

My guess is that they just let Horford retire after this season.

“Let us know if you get any good starks stories.”

Not really anything worth retelling. I told him that I saw him play in preseason during his rookie year and was very impressed…and was very disappointed when they seemed to prefer Greg Grant over him, only to correct that error later in the season. He kind of disputed my account, saying that he was injured. When I got home I checked and saw that Greg Grant played in November 1990, while Starks did not play until December.

I also asked how he felt about Josh Hart wearing his number, he was okay with it because he liked Hart. In thre back of my mind I was thinking about how he would have had his number retired if we won in 1994…so close yet so far.

“i literally just finished a couple slices of pizza – but i gotta say – that is one tasty menu they got there at Scarpetta…what did you get z-man?”

They had a fixed menu for the event…everything was tasty, but not comparable to the stuff on the real menu.

Horford and KP are both lights out shooters, so it’s not the craziest notion to field them both.

Kinda thinking Horford will struggle to guard 4s than earlier in his career.

If nothing else, both could desperately use extra rest each game

Teams must have been reading everyone on twitter asking how boston pulled off that heist because the deal has fallen apart per woj

Woj update to Boston & Wash supposedly still working on something, just no clips

What in the world was the Clippers’ problem with trading the 30th pick and Morris and Coffey for Brogdon? That seems like a steal for them.

Maybe they prefer Chris Paul. That’s not necessarily a good decision, but I can see it happening.

What in the world was the Clippers’ problem with trading the 30th pick and Morris and Coffey for Brogdon? That seems like a steal for them.

Spot on. Doesn’t make sense. Only explanation is that the trade reports were all materially wrong.

Sounds like the Clips didn’t like Brogdon’s medicals.

Also, seems like the Wiz could’ve gotten more. Two 1sts at least.

    KP going to Boston

    Marcus Smart to Memphis

    Tyus Jones to Wash

    More details likely to com

    ….

    Two 1sts to Boston? I don’t get this…

Now reports the KP to Celtics trade has fallen through…

Danilo, 35th pick, Muscala to WAS

The irony of this trade is that Marcus Smart owns Kristaps Porzingis. He must be so pissed. The next Grizzlies Celtics game will be fun to watch.

celtics got the best player in the deal and picks? what the fuck are these teams doing

Also Marcus Smart will either make Ja Morant grow up real fast or get shot by Davonte Pack for trying

celtics got the best player in the deal and picks? what the fuck are these teams doing

They gave up three years of control of Marcus Smart on a cheap deal for one year of Porzingis on a not so cheap deal.

Washington got very little in exchange for Porzingis: #35 pick this year, Muscala, and Gallinari. Peanuts.

Washington got very little in exchange for Porzingis: #35 pick this year, Muscala, and Gallinari. Peanuts.

So much for Cuban selling low, Strat.

It kind of makes sense for Washington; they get Tyus Jones, who is a nice pick up for a rebuilding team, Gallinari, Mike Muscala, and the 35th pick in this year’s draft for Porzingis, who they didn’t want to keep. This seems good for them. From Boston’s point of view they send out Gallinari, Muscala and Smart and get back KP (who opts in as part of the deal) and two first round picks, number 25 this year and the Warriors top four protected pick next year. That seems great for Boston. I think Smart is good but declining and they still have Brogden, White and Pritchard. Just trading Smart for KP would probably be a decent deal for Boston but they go first rounders too. I don’t really understand it for Memphis. They traded Tyus Jones and two first round picks for Smart. They do have to replace Jones, especially while Morant is suspended, but it seems like they may have overpaid for Smart.

Edit: this post crossed with some of the posts above. I think Jones, who is young (21) and apparently well worth his two year $30m contract is a great pickup for Washington

Wow, can’t believe the Celts dealt Smart….

I’m stunned. It seems to go against everything the Celtics seemed to have been built around. That said, I do think it’s fair to note that Smart is likely to be hitting a major decline somewhat soon.

Smart is a perfect fit with Morant in Memphis, but Tyus Jones was also a perfect backup for Morant, in the sense that he could easily lead the team whenever Morant was hurt (they have performed very well whenever Morant has been hurt in the regular season). So now, that role will be Smart’s. I don’t know if he’s up to it.

The article I read about the trade incorrectly left out Tyus Jones, so I stand corrected. He’s a pretty nice little player, though he does have just one year remaining on his contract. Maybe Washington will look to flip him for another more long-term kind of piece.

Given that Washington is rebuilding, we may never get the protected first rounder they owe us. I’d consider taking number 35 this year and a future second to give the future first round pick back to Washington. Basically we would be trading our rights to two future seconds to one this year and one in the future.

The WAS pick has protections out to 2026. It may never convey as such, but it is still has some speculative value and is something that can be held over WAS’s head since it impedes their ability to trade picks until then.

Beyond that, it is interesting how WAS is totally tearing it down to the studs without getting much back beyond cap relief. One would think that a more savvy GM could have netted more in return for KP than they got, as well as Beal. Not a single first rounder in the mix for a team that seems committed to rebuilding? That seems like a fire sale to the extreme…

As to the Celts, I think a healthy KP makes them better and opens up the floor for Brown, Tatum, and White; while subtracting Smart shifts the leadership vacuum to a less volatile group at the cost of some of the best defense in the league. I don’t get the talk about Smart entering his decline phase, he just turned 29…and his contract seemed more than reasonable. It is a weird transition as they are definitely losing toughness and leadership, and if KP gets hurt and their other injury-prone players (Brogdan, RWIII) start breaking down, not to mention Al Horford being 37, they may be an early playoff exit, especially if the Knicks and Miami beef things up. But they still have some ammo to further upgrade their rotation, and some open roster spots.

Feels like a really impressive job by KP’s agent…
KP was almost certainly going to opt in and hope for an extension with a trade partner given the market out there.
Now he gets traded to a championship level team who gave up their heart and soul to get him. He can probably write whatever number he wants on his own extension offer, sign it, and give it to Brad Stevens for bookkeeping.

Say what you will about Michael Winger — writ large he is doing what he should be doing, but I don’t see any poker player at all in him — just getting whatever is offered and sending people out the door without trying to “win” any of the deals.
