A stressful day ahead. Knicks can withstand a one-month absence, but not so much the rest of the season. Hard to not believe in Dolan’s Razor.

They presumably have the MRI results already but in typical Knicks fashion have not announced anything. So I’m pessimistic.

So if Randle is out for the rest of the season how does this change things going forward?

I think Brunson and company are too good and we’ve compiled too many wins to pivot to a tank obviously. We’re probably still, at worst, a team that drops to the play in but I could see us surviving the rest of the season and only dropping to the 6th spot. I counted 17 very winnable games left on the schedule which would put us at 46 wins.

So does it change anything as far as the ultimate goal of getting one more big name this summer? I’m guessing not

Nothing yet? I half think that missing Randle makes it more likely that Leon overspends for wins this year.

    I hate this.

Trying to come up with any positives should it be season ending. The only thing I can think of is that it was better to happen now than earlier in the season because unlikely an OG trade would happen given our changing needs. And even better than just a week ago because it gives the FO a better window into just how good we can be.

    But other than that, fuck

I wouldn’t read too much into the fact that there are no news yet. I think an out for the season bombshell would be quickly known to the likes of Won or Shams.

Yeah it’s hard to find positives if he’s out for the rest of the season other than I think we can probably still make the playoffs but we’d probably go out in the first round.

Based on his opinions about Randle especially in the playoffs, I am expecting E to be our optimist today.

I think we can probably still make the playoffs but we’d probably go out in the first round.

Not that I am advocating for it, but it is also too late to do a hard tank for a lotto pick. 29 wins already, need probably no more than 8-9, and we have 5 games against the real dregs. And that just gets us into c. 2% for the 1st pick odds territory in a poor draft, at least at the very top.

Here’s hoping that Julius comes back this season and in the meantime Grimes soaks up his usage!

E was sympathetic to the situation last night.

Still waiting for news. If iHart is back for real, I don’t think we’re in awful shape. OG can easily slide up a position, and Precious is probably better as a PF anyway, and has played pretty well of late. But the dream of homecourt in round 1 probably goes away, and it’ll be a fight to stay out of the play in.

The real question is whether Leon accepts that we’re screwed without Julius (for a while, at least) and decides against sipping into the war chest right now, or if he feels like he has to make a significant move because of how well we’ve played through now.

Say what you will about him, but this engine does not run without Julius alongside Jalen. Irregardless of how amazing Brunson is..I’d argue we need Randle just as much.

Godspeed, Julius. I hate this for him because he’s been having an outstanding season

To Alan’s point, if Randle is out for the season, no plausible move raises the ceiling we had with him, and at the cost of future equity makes little sense. I’m confident Leon understands this. At this point hoping for the best news.

I thought Owen’s Sinner comment was something cryptic about Julius because I don’t follow tennis…

    PFs available:
    + DeRozan
    + Kuzma
    + Harrison Barnes
    + Bruce Brown
    + Bojan
    + Hunter (?)
    + Hayward
    + Marcus Morris
    + Miles (plz no) Bridges
    + Jerami Grant

I could see us going for someone we could use long-term and short-term, Jerami Grant would work for both. A combo guard could still help.

    I hate this.

Yeah I’d hope Leon isn’t rash and makes some big move but I don’t think he would be. I still wouldn’t be opposed to a Fournier plus pick move for Brogdon if he’s gonna be here next year too. Another scorer would be good. But I guess it does depend on whether we think Randle can be back in time for the playoffs.

If Randle misses most of the season, maybe Detroit’s Bojan would be ok if he comes cheap. The contract has a team option so it helps the long term plan.

Edit: scratch that. He’s been pretty bad this season. He’s shooting ok but I don’t think Thibs will ever play a PF with a 6% rebounding rate.

For me it depends on the severity of the injury. If he’s able to recover by March, and iHart is good to go, I’d stall. But if he’s lost for the season and playoffs, then I’d be okay with Leon doing something more bold…not crazy but not insignificant either. Moving OG to starting PF really cuts into all of his Swiss Army knife advantages and will likely have a ripple effect all through the lineup. You could probably try Precious in the starting lineup and replace his bench minutes at backup C with Sims. I’d probably give that a try because I really want OG to stay at SF.

D’Angelo Russell is left-handed and played power-forward in grade school. Get it done, Leon!

We need to replace the usage more than the position. We can easily slide OG to PF, but we’d still need to replace Randle’s usage, which is maybe why it makes more sense to pursue Dejounte even more now (plus you also get your backup PG).

Brunson/DJM/Hart/OG/iHart is still a strong unit, maybe stronger defensively, with Deuce/DDV/Precious/Sims as your bench. Then you still have a lot of flexibility once Julius and Mitch get back.

EDIT: I assume Grimes is going out in any DJM trade.

Hayward is interesting…I recall Thibs being a fan…but he’s always hurt and not really a PF.

Brown is more intriguing now, since he could slide into Josh Hart’s bench role without benching Deuce or Grimes. But it would be a shame to overpay…maybe try something like a top-20 protected pick that converts to 2 seconds?

I kind of agree with Z-Man on OG at SF. I feel like playing him at PF will force him to guard bigger players and thus make it harder to put him on the oppositions’ best guards/wings, where he seems to excel.

I’m still out on DJM. I disagree that replacing Randle’s usage is the biggest issue in the sense that you make a long-term commitment to another position to solve it. It depends on the price, though, and I am assuming that the price is high.

Shifting OG to PF (or guard best player depending on matchup) and Hart or Grimes to SF probably improves our defense.

    The problem is scoring!

We are now down Randle, Quickley and RJ. That’s a LOT of scoring to replace. We aren’t going to do with with Hart or Grimes in the starting lineup. So if they were thinking of making a move for a bench scorer anyway, he may have to move to the starting lineup. I wouldn’t do anything crazy to just replace Randle though. I would pretend nothing happened and try to make a move that addresses the bench that may also help while Randle is out.

We had four high usage creators who could all generate offense on their own, even if one of them was rarely efficient at it. Now we’re down to one. I still do that trade every time, but it’s an obvious vulnerability to the current roster.

Trade for Brogdon, then make a second trade for Drummond.

Brogdon absorbs some of the usage and runs the second unit. Drummond plays backup C. Run a platoon of OG, Hart, and Precious at PF. Brogdon is still useful for next season. Drummond comes off the books but you get Mitch back. Go into next season at full strength.

If Julius manages a comeback this year, Brogdon and Drummond are both still useful.

Shifting OG to PF (or guard best player depending on matchup) and Hart or Grimes to SF probably improves our defense.

That was my first thought yesterday, but now I’m not sure. If you think of the Wolves game, this alignment would likely have OG guarding KAT and Hart/Grimes guarding Edwards. Not all teams have imposing PFs like KAT, but Hart has more trouble guarding size, so their defense would be a bit more exposed.

If the Knicks meet the Cavs in the playoffs and they don’t have Randle, does OG guard Mobley? He’s probably too big for Hart. And then does Hart guard Mitchell? They might miss Randle’s size in a match up like that (without even going into the question of how much he punishes his opposing PFs defensively due to his physical play).

Nothing is carved in stone. You are allowed to tweak lineups or minutes to account for certain matchups. If you want to argue Thibs doesn’t like to do that, I’d agree. But he may have to be a bit more flexible at this stage.

IMO Brogdon made the most sense before and he makes the most sense now.

Ace beat reporter Robert Randolph claims Julius is out for the season: “It’s a tear and ligament damage around the rotator cuff ball joint area.”

Waiting for info from actual beat guys.

    This sucks. Get well, Julius!

I like JK’s plan, even if Bregson costs you either Detroit or Washington’s 1st.

IMO, if you’re going to spend first-round picks in a trade, it should be for someone on the right side of 30, with the occasional exception. I’d rather just keep rolling with our guys than pay a first or two for someone who will walk after the season or fall off a cliff.

Granted, I’m not saying guys like DJM, LaVine, or Kuzma are necessarily the answer… anyone on the block midseason probably has some flaws… but you shouldn’t just throw away draft capital, especially when a ring doesn’t seem super-plausible rn.

This is a time when we need djphan’s statistical acumen and sagacity… is there a bat-signal we can reach him with?

My move regardless of if it’s all season or just now would be to trade Fournier and a pick (maybe throw in a second) for Brogdon. That would give us scoring and also benefit of addressing the back up PG deficit.

Move precious to start at PF so OG can remain at the 3. Then pick up another PF (Taj lol) or play hart at back up PF for the time being. Brogdon plus increased usage from DDV, OG, McBride and Grimes and we should be ok. Good thing all of those guys and Brunson are good three point shooters so we can hopefully gonna away and win some games we normally wouldn’t.

Brogdon also can be here next season and would not change our long term goals.

The only adjustment I’d make to our deadline plans if Randle is out for the year (which would be one of the most devastating injuries I’ve experienced as a sports fan) is to not acquire anyone expiring, so sadly the apple of my eye Alley Barks would be out the window.

Everyone else we seem to be in the market for would be in our plans in some capacity beyond this season, whether it’s as a trade piece of player for us next season. So I’d still be happy to get Brogdon or D’Lo (assuming he opts in).

A month and change without Randle wouldn’t be the end of the world, and in a best case scenario would give Randle some much needed rest while allowing OG, Hart, DDV, et al. to experiment with more usage.

But if he’s out for the season, or comes back but is clearly less than 100%, that is truly heartbreaking. The case that we’re not “contenders” by at least some definition was getting increasingly hard to make. 5th in net rating, 6th in SRS, and both numbers trending up sharply post-trade…Dolan’s god damn Razor.

Glass half full: looking more and more like Dallas will hand us a pretty nice pick if they don’t tank their way out of it again.

We’ve been saving that Fournier contract for a rainy day. It’s raining like a mfer right now…

Or maybe counter thinking here is if we could get Dali from LA without giving up anything cause we’re facilitating and DJM trade for the lakers, we pull that trigger bc he’d give us scoring but it’s also not costing us anything. Would be sort of a pause move till next season.

Or maybe counter thinking here is if we could get Dali from LA

That’s one way to melt the time away the rest of this season

Fournier for Miro would make sense. Or go French for French and grab Magritte.

I do think acquiring someone like Escher might be the move though. Someone a little less pricy who you can still put on a dorm room wall.

It’s kind of amazing how incompetent Dallas has been at putting a good team around their transcendental star. It’s looking more and more like they will be a bit like Portland (only Luka is better than Dame).

It’s kind of amazing how incompetent Dallas has been at putting a good team around their transcendental star. It’s looking more and more like they will be a bit like Portland (only Luka is better than Dame).

For sure. This is one reason why I predicted at the beginning if the season that Houston would have a better record than Dallas. Dallas is better than I expected, but not really good. The other reason is I thought Houston would be much better than last season, which they are. I’m not right on the actual won lost records so far, but Houston is only 4.5 games in back of Dallas and actually has a better SRS (1.07 versus 0.23).

D’Lo is not free. We would have to send something to Atlanta, since they don’t want him. I think Deuce is adequate as a 10-12 minute a night backup for Brunson, but if we replace him, it has to be with someone who has the size to play with Brunson. Brogdon and Murray both fit the bill, but that means you’re probably pushing Grimes out of the rotation also. I would try PF by committee using OG, Precious, Hart, and maybe Sims before I did anything else.

I’m still firmly in the anger stage of dealing with loss. And I am honestly a little mad at Randle for seeming to want to get on a poster when he recklessly hurled himself in the air. It was a very high risk play with low reward. And now we’re fucked.

Well… if this is season-ending we’re fucked… if it’s short term I am surprisingly optimistic that Jalen Brunson will go nuclear and carry us with a string of incredible, unsustainable, high USG performances that vault him into the MVP conversation.

Trading for Dali would be surreal

    LOL!

Terrible news if Randle is out for the season. They’ll probably make a move now, but let’s hope it’s a good one.

Worried that too much time has passed for a pristine MRI. Downgrading best case to “surgery might not be necessary, evaluating options.”

Yeah- no word yet signals second opinion which probably isn’t good. I’m kind of expecting they’ll at least wait until the all-star break and see if there’s enough healing to have a chance at returning this season then re-evaluate. The recovery time for surgery seems to be around 6 months so you wouldn’t want to wait too much longer after the all-star break for him to have the procedure so you make sure he’s 100% going into next season.

“Worried that too much time has passed for a pristine MRI. Downgrading best case to “surgery might not be necessary, evaluating options.””

Your downgrade was my starting point…it was clearly either a dislocation or something worse. Here’s a sports doctors POV.

I honestly think that Taj could resign again. Why not? He’s plug-and-play even if he’s slightly rusty.
    Start: Brunson-DDV-OG-Precious-iHart
    Bench: Deuce-Hart-Grimes-Taj-Sims

reference julius, things seem to not be progressing in a positive direction…

to be honest, it looked pretty bad when it happened…

yeah, it will most likely limit our season’s progression…

    bummer…bummer bummer bummer…

to lose two of your starting five during the season really stinks…

Baby Obi profiled as more of a wing coming out of college, but he’s grabbing 7reb/g in the g-league so maybe he can step in at the 4.

    I hate this.

I’m already in “anything less than out for the season is a cause for celebration” mode…

Maybe the Knicks just don’t work on Sunday and there’s lots if good news in an unread email 🙂

They are probably getting multiple opinions and also discussing the benefit of an injury exception if it’s a marginal call between surgery vs rehab and coming back this year.

Maybe they are getting multiple opinions and also discussing the benefit of an injury exception if it’s a marginal call between surgery vs rehab and coming back this year.

A team needs to apply for a DPE prior to January 15. So we really got screwed that he got injured right after the cutoff.

I figure the need for second opinions is also a bad sign, but I agree that’s probably what’s going on.

    I hate this.

I know nothing more than anyone else about Randle’s State, except that — this is an injury that I myself have had.

In fact, I could barely watch the screen as he got up, because I could see in a second that it was a right shoulder dislocation and I still can’t watch that $%it, decades later.

Anyway, there are a LOT of reasons to get a second opinion, because they are choosing between (a) surgery (no more Randle this season) versus (b) his playing on it starting in a month, with a LOT of bracing on his shoulder. And, sadly for Randle, a more “tentative” and less physical game, most likely. Followed by Surgery in June.

Either way this sucks. I would bring back Oakley and Ewing for just the April 3rd game, just to beat the living crap out of any Heat player and then get thrown out. And I miss Mason. But I digress.

    Get well soon, Julius.

Even if Randle is out for the season if he gets surgery, rehabs and comes back as good then long term I don’t think it changes the overall positive trajectory of the team or our plans. But it just sucks bc while I did not think we were going to win it all or even get to the finals I was really starting to believe we had a left shot at the conference finals. It just feels like massive blue balls at this point.

Well, the delay is definitely not good news, but it is not necessarily terrible news either. It may be that initial reads are surprisingly good and they want to confirm that it is better than expected with additional opinions before going public. As the doctor indicated, it is unlikely that a dislocated shoulder doesn’t involve at least some damage either to the labrum or other structural elements of the shoulder. Labrum tears are variable and some can be played through if the shoulder is relatively stable. My daughter played two seasons of volleyball with a small but not insignificant labral tear in her hitting shoulder. It required some management but no surgery.

A team needs to apply for a DPE prior to January 15. So we really got screwed that he got injured right after the cutoff.

    damn it

Wow, looks like Detroit is a lot better without Cade.

Maybe so, but, as I posted recently, I think they are playing better in recent weeks too.

I’m already in “anything less than out for the season is a cause for celebration” mode…

same here…2 significant injuries within a year is worrying…i feel for julius…

one of my favorite moments of the season was watching julius going over to get a hug from his son on the sideline…

yeah, julius may need to add some more finesse to his game going forward…

The Randle injury is so disheartening. We actually looked like a contender for once and the press was noticing too and now this happens. And Randle may not be the smoothest personality but he works hard and puts it all on the line every game and I really feel for him.

If you look at the video in the link I posted above, it seems that Jaime Jaquez Jr. made a rookie mistake there. He should have known it was too late to draw a charge, and by going for it, he sort of submarined Julius. If it were a veteran I would call it a dirty play, but hard to feel that way about a rookie.

I bet we are going to get some sort of mixed “could return this year” kind of diagnosis

Today’s total silence is making me revise my expectations downwards. I think my default mode now is “out for the season”.

Both RJ and IQ are out tonight, 2nd game in a row for IQ. Toronto is in full blown tank mode.

Personally I started off at out for season and at this point I am fully expecting that Randle is actually dead

The iron law of Knicksiness is incontrovertible: anything good that happens is only to set up an even more crushing disappointment.

Randle and Mitch will both come back in time for the playoffs and we’re going to win it all.

I don’t follow other teams, but do they keep fans in the dark like the Knicks do about injuries?

    Honestly have no idea.

You would think that with all the gambling going injury reporting would be a priority.

You would think that with all the gambling going injury reporting would be a priority.

I mean, they already ruled him out for Monday, so the gamblers are covered.

No. The Lions Lionsed, which somehow is even worse than our Knicksian moments, jesus. What an awful, awful way to lose.

My favorite one was the tweet about Dan Campbell being distracted because he was checking social media for the results of Randle’s MRI.

My wife is from Detroit and we were all decked out in Lions gear so that was tough to watch. The guys in the trenches played great for the Lions but the skill position guys just biffed everything and the Lions’ secondary can’t tackle to save their lives.

Also this was not a great day for the Fourth Down Revolution. The first time the Lions went for it on 4th I could understand, since they were aggressively trying to put the game away, but the second one was very questionable because the momentum had already shifted against them.

Well, at least today it was her screaming at a dumb sports team on the teevee and not me.

I am going to bed with the following optimistic thought: The initial interpretation is that the injury is typical for a dislocation, i.e. involving a labrum injury and some partial tears of rotator cuff tendons and muscles, but nothing requiring immediate surgical repair, and that he will be re-evaluated in a month. Just to be sure, they are consulting with some specialist(s), who may not have been available due to it being on a Sunday. They’ll get a more definitive read on the MRI tomorrow before communicating anything to the media.
I am basing this optimism on several things: 1) the x-ray showed nothing of significance, e.g. nothing that would indicate a fracture to the glenoid, a separation, or a clavicle injury, 2) he’s a tough guy with really powerful shoulders, 3) he is lefty and it’s his right shoulder.and he has a high pain tolerance, as he showed by playing through an ankle injury that required surgery the minute the playoffs ended, and most importantly, and 4) if the MRI showed a no-brainer season-ending surgical situation, there would be no reason to hold back from the media or wait for a second opinion.

And yet, you know, Dolan’s Razor and all…

It just felt like Campbell didn’t have another gear, it was always stay aggressive, when his players were clearly shook and needed to calm down. The field goals would have done that, but going for those 4th downs and missing just destroyed them mentally it feels.

The two teams that reached the super bowl did it more because their opponents self destructed than by their own merits.

Who the fuck are Bregson and Dali?

And EB, do you hate this? I can’t tell for sure. 🙂

And EB, do you hate this? I can’t tell for sure. 🙂

I’m not entirely sure either… but I hate this.

If you’re actually curious, they are typos two different posters made while meaning to type Malcolm Brogdon and D’Angelo Russell.

I was truly curious. With the way that people are purposely butchering Burks’ name, I wasn’t sure if “Bregson” was supposed to be him. And “Dali” being a typo is one thing, but then it was used four or five times by multiple posters after the first instance, so I had no way of knowing that it was DLo. “Dali” isn’t even close to “DLo.”

    Thanks, Brian! 🙂
