Paul Ruud? Multiple lengthy posts about woolly mammoths and Mayan cultures (I think that’s what they may be about—I can’t really get through them)? What the heck is going on around here?

I’d like to deny it just to drum up some conversation. I actually know nothing about him, not even his first name.

I highly doubt that the veracity of that name, but I like it nevertheless. 🙂

well then doogie – sounds like a good time to start digging in on ancient sports…

interesting that you can google and learn the sports they played in ancient: sumeria, egypt, indus valley and china from 6,000 years ago…

nothing though as to what might have been played by the norte chico civilization in peru…which turns out to be almost as old as the civilizations of sumeria and egypt…

crazy to think they figured out the importance of urban planning 5,000 years ago – that is so impressive…it’s thought they communicated through knots on a rope, like the inca’s did later on…

seeing how everyone else at the time seemed to be engaged with combat sports, some kind of team “football” thing and of course – running…most likely they were in to that too…

what really stands out for that early american civilization in south america is their diet…they had all kinds of good stuff to eat…incorporating “planned” cities in to stuff though – is just amazing…

somehow though, they never figured out to use fired clay as a vessel…great basket weavers it seems…lots of cotton – heck, they could have done the hot air balloon thing if they wanted to…

The first ‘aerostatic’ flight in history was an experiment carried out by the Montgolfier brothers at Versailles in 1783. At long last, man could leave the surface of the earth below.

    oops, not so fast:

The earliest hot air balloons appeared in the China in 3rd century AD (or BP?). They were small, airborne lanterns and were used for military signaling and during festivals. Europe met its first hot air balloon on August 8, 1709, when the Brazilian-Portuguese priest Bartolomeu de Gusmão managed to lift a small hot air balloon made of paper full of hot air in front of King John V and the Portuguese court in Lisbon.

I saw yesterday the talk about Portugal, visiting/retiring. I actually want to retire to the Azores on an orchard. It’s a beautiful chain of islands!

Sorry, geo. I’m about as interested in ancient sports as I am in signing Trevor Keels to a max contract. Glad you dig it, though. (See what I did there?)

I’m hesitant to call Novak the GOAT simply because he’s one of three contemporaries who have been considered the GOAT at various times this century. Seems like it points to an historic dilution of competition.

I think it’s fairly close between Federer, Joker and Nadal.

I downgrade Nadal a bit because even though he’s won multiple majors on all surfaces, the vast majority of his success came on clay. IMO he wasn’t as consistent as Joker and Federer on the other surfaces.

Federer is a tougher analysis because he dominated at a time when it’s at least arguable the circuit was kind of weak. Then he struggled more when Nadal and Joker started peaking. On the flip side, by the time Nadal and Joker were peaking he was already at an age when tennis players start slipping a little. So his head to head with them suffered as much more more because of that. Head to head, Nadal was not even getting into the later rounds against Federer at the latter’s peak on hard and grass. He was still developing his game on those surfaces. But Federer was getting to later rounds on clay because he was so great all around.

Between, Joker and Federer, peak age against peak age, both using the same equipment and with the benefit of the same training knowledge, that’s one hell of a series of matches. I’d be rooting for Federer because I like his game better, but at even money I’d take Joker.

Of the three I think Nadal was the toughest mentally, then Joker, then Federer, but that’s splitting hairs.

I saw yesterday the talk about Portugal, visiting/retiring. I actually want to retire to the Azores on an orchard. It’s a beautiful chain of islands!

Never been there, but yeah everybody that i know that has been there told me wonders about it.

anyone really believe that 9 to 10 foot tall creatures dropped in on vegas recently?

other than that – i think the only current knick stuff is possible UDFA workouts…hart’s new deal…obi and quik’s no-extension/extension…

“The best tennis player is also called Joker?”

    Evidently.

    Djoker to his friends.

The strange thing about him is that it’s sort of hard to see what makes him so good. Nadal would overpower you with power and relentlessness. Fed was elegant and would win points he crafted like a chess master. Djoker gets everything back and just refuses to lose. He turns defense into offense in a way I have never seen, hitting the most unbelievable shots from the most difficult positions like Plastic Man. He so often wins these classic rope a dopes where, like today, he makes his opponent think he can win the first set (sometimes they even do). Then the poor sap finds he is too exhausted to compete.

He could easily have 25 majors right now if not for the vaccine stuff and he has to be a favorite to win the calendar slam this year which is insane at 36. He is just astonishing and I don’t think anyone will remotely compare to him when he is done.

Everything I know about tennis I learned from Andre Agassi’s book, and according to him Sampras was the BOAT (boringest of all time).

If I were the New York Yankees I would simply assemble a team that does not crumble into nothing when one player is injured. This offense is a miserable slog.

5th lowest OBP in MLB yet the problem if you want to call it that is they still manage to win games and make the playoffs giving Hal an excuse not to make any changes and keep the status quo.
