Build Around Jalen Brunson and They Will Come The Knicks Wall

So the article above tries to make the Mikal trade work. Here’s what the Knicks give out.
NETS GET
RJ BARRETT
OBI TOPPIN
2024 1ST ROUND PICK VIA DETROIT (TOP 18 PROTECTED)
2025 1ST ROUND PICK VIA MILWAUKEE (TOP 4 PROTECTED)
Everyone on board with that? Recognizing that it’ll never happen, of course.
My favorite part is how the author repeatedly addresses the fact that most readers will kill if RJ isn’t traded for a top-5 player, which is just such an absurdist alternative reality.
Okay, since I’m the only one awake on this lovely Saturday morning, I’ll add in what may or may not be a controversial take from Amick on how to build a contender:
“We have a Nuggets team that was built from the ground up against a mostly homegrown Heat team. Yet, the outside noise remains (illogically) the same: Stars chasing other stars as if the Nets’ debacle of recent years or the Lakers’ Russell Westbrook mistake weren’t enough to change the mindset of today’s best players. Some habits die hard, I guess.
Never mind that these NBA Finals are proof positive that securing a couple of stars, then being patient while focusing on player development across your entire program, is the way to go.”
…against a mostly homegrown Heat team…
Whenever I see words like “proof positive” my BS antennae tend to look for a statement of fact that is highly debatable.
Yeah, it’s kind of a lie. Jimmy’s not home-grown. Neither are Lowrey or Love. But Bam and Herro were both drafted by Miami, and they have seven undrafted players that they picked up.
Nuggets have their top three, Joker, Murray, and Porter, all as draftees. And Braun, obviously. But Caldwell-Pope and Gordon are trades, as is a lot of their bench.
I guess the part I find of most interest is “being patient while focusing on player development across your entire program.” Which you can argue both teams have done (the consistent improvements by Bam, Herro, and Gordon are examples).
YMMV.
I mean, sure. But isn’t Denver the team that’s gone the longest without a finals appearance or something like that? And didn’t Miami have the original Superteam? I guess each just managed to build great organizations over the years—and somehow without Isaiah Thomas!
Hahaha, Geo, i live outside the city in the mountains but there’s plenty of space in the city or in the surrounding cities, and very cheap for americans. For us here it’s getting expensive. 😛 About americans retiring you’re both correct, it’s declining because i think the government lowered the incentives to do it, but i think people are still doing it and we have a very nice country to retire to. I think the only less perfect thing about retiring here is the trip back home taking to many hours to do it more regularly. But you can do like some folks my parents run into some years ago, they were dutch and they used to spend 6 months in the Netherlands and 6 months here in the Algarve region (it’s our Florida). Funny enough the 6 months here was the time they used to save money, because Portugal is a lot cheaper than the Netherlands. 😉 About having to speak portuguese, i’d say in the city a majority of the people can speak english so i wouldn’t be a problem, but with me being portuguese i don’t know if i can make a correct assessment on this. 😛 Maybe Z-Man can give us a better opinion about it, because one of his daughters was here in Porto so she probably knows better than me if it’s hard to find english speaking people here. To study in the university there’s no problem, we have here a lot of students from other europeans countries and because of that there’s always the english version of everything.
I think i’ll ask the department of tourism to put me on the pay roll, i’m always promoting the country and it’s their job to do it! LOL
The Murray and Porter contracts were crippling when they weren’t playing, which was a lot of the time. Good for Denver that they were patient and their bets have paid off, but there is obviously a lot of downside to committing tons of guaranteed money to the unproven and to the chronically injured. It’s not really a great recipe for success as we’ve seen demonstrated again and again over the years.
About the NBA Finals, the Heat fell in a 1-3 hole so now the odds (based on the 280 playoff series that got to 1-3 in NBA history) are 4.6% in favor of the Heat making a comeback. Only 12.5% reached a game 7. It won’t be easy go against this odds, i’d say.
About the proposed Nets trade, and even forgetting the claim that the Nets will never trade with the Knicks (which might be true, i’m not questioning it), i’d say no team would accept that package for Mikal. RJ has potential but his prospects are very shaky at the moment, after 3 seasons Obi hasn’t proved he can be a starter in this league, and 2 protected picks seems way too little. I’d say that package is an instant no, whatever the team that had Mikal.
But yeah, of course i’d be on board with the trade, we’d be clearly better and we’d be losing almost nothing in the process (i’m not an Obi believer).
Yeah that Mikal trade is no way city. Throw in two more picks and maybe the Nets think about it. But our own picks don’t have the value they used to. Because hustlebunny moneyball or something.
I see a Knicks finals watch party in Lisbon on the horizon, the ultimate umarell experience!
Dunno about yal, but I’m ready for the CP3/KAT/LaVine shoe to drop. The CP3 one is interesting to me. I don’t see anywhere he can go where they won’t ask him to carry a big load. Even if he goes to one of the LA teams. I also- and this is gonna hurt- think that Quickley would be a fantastic PG in Vogel’s system alongside KD and Booker. Unfortunately for us- the only way Quickley starts on the Knicks is if Grimes is moved in a deal. So I wonder 2 things:
1. Can we get a decent first out of Phoenix? I’m not sure which first they can move, but I’m certain they don’t have any players worth Quickley in a trade.
2. Could we convince CP3 to ring chase as a Knick backing up Brunson? Give him Quickley’s minutes and squeeze 5-10 more a night for him out of the rotation as he and the Hart foundation get the majority of the minutes available on the 2nd unit with some back-up 4 sprinkled in and a shooting specialist.
I’m spitballing but, if we ever feel we have to lose Quickley- I think that’s the only acceptable replacement. And honestly, it’s probably better for the cap if we hold on to Grimes long term if we’re gonna build around high salaried stars.
CP3 is pushing 40, maybe he should think about a situation like that if he really wants to extend his career. The biggest fish to fry is the Randle-RJ conundrum, and I’m at my wit’s end trying to think of a way to clear that up lol
In
Of all the potential acquisitions thrown around, the one that actually has a decent chance of happening — and I expect significant fire, not just smoke and Knicks-for-clicks, around it — is Karl-Anthony Towns.
I don’t think I’m against it. He’s not *quite* as good as would be my preference, but he’s damn good.
And he’s modern — which around here, can’t be taken for granted.
Mikal Bridges would be the dream. I’d trade a lot for him.
Don’t see any way it could happen.
I’d trade Randle for KAT but I don’t think he plays enough defense to be a credible 1.1 guy. He’s obviously excellent but gives me some Adrian Dantley vibes
Also, pretty fun stat about Brown and Gordon last night.

Speaking of things that won’t happen, am I the only one who kinda likes the idea of Chris Paul if he’s willing to take a one-year deal?
I know we’re all scarred from the Kemba experience, but we’re talking about a backup point guard here. He’d get the 12-14 minutes Brunson doesn’t play and some extra minutes in two-point guard lineups when it wouldn’t kill us defensively.
We definitely felt the need for an extra shot creator in the playoffs (and plenty of times during the regular season for that matter). There aren’t many of those possibly attainable on a one-year deal.
To be sure, it’s far from certain Chris Paul fits the bill anymore. His efficiency tanked this year and he’s 38. But on the off chance he’d take a one-year deal, that might be the highest upside way to use the MLE. Maybe with a heavily reduced workload his numbers rebound a bit and he’s healthier in the playoffs.
Some people might be worried it would raise some questions as to Quickley’s role but that’s only a problem if we make it one. There are plenty of minutes to go around between the two guard slots.
The reason this won’t happen is because Paul’s role here would almost definitely be smaller than what he’s willing to accept, but on the off chance he can be talked into it based on his relationship with Leon et al., I’d be intrigued.
There’s probably a stupid overpay I can talk myself into. RJ, Grimes, Obi, and four unprotected Knicks firsts. But does that even get it done?
it sounds as though time moves slowly there, a chance to sip at life and truly appreciate it…i’m with raven – i think i might be sending you my kids too 🙂
it’s hard for me to imagine the pace of life ever really slowing for those of you whom live in the city…
I’d love to have both Mikal and RJ and play them together. But there’s little to no way you’re getting Mikal without giving them RJ.
To wind up with them both, I could easily talk myself into a stupid overpay. I’d give them Randle, Grimes, Obi, and three unprotected ones without blinking. They actually may even do that. I’d probably rather offer that package up for Zion, but Mikal is really fucking good.
I could see myself being talked into either KP or KAT bc in theory we shouldn’t need to shoot our proverbial load on either for the right price.
-Our opinions on Randle aside, if you’re targeting KAT, is there a Randle package you can build that won’t cost alot? I just don’t think the cost for KAT should be that high given you’re buying a bit low on him based on last season. Randle can play along a defensive C, while Towns struggled.
-Hate to give up Mitch, but its not like KP is a slouch on D as long as you keep him at the 5.
In theory, both KP and KAT would really open up the offense. But is the offensive tradeoff worth it, and would the team have a plan in place to tinker the starting lineup to balance their weaknesses?
You know what… i might walk back on KAT. That escalating salary on his extension staring in ‘23-‘24 is INSANE. Player option for 61mil in ‘27??? Yikes.
Yea..big no on KAT. I like him..he’s really good. But he’s not that much better than Julius- especially at PF. And..he’s a step backwards in the when-it-counts department. I’d rather stick with Randle no matter how enticing KAT’s outside shooting is. That contract ages in dog years too as Cdiggy alluded to. KAT’S much better at the 5
ah – now i understand:
Culture and civilization are two related but distinct concepts that are often used interchangeably, but have different meanings. Culture refers to the beliefs, values, behaviors, and material objects that characterize a group or society. It encompasses language, religion, social norms, customs, and traditions, as well as the arts, literature, and other forms of intellectual expression.
Civilization, on the other hand, refers to a complex, organized society that has developed over time and has advanced cultural, social, and technological systems. Civilization is often characterized by the development of cities, organized government, and a system of writing. While culture is a fundamental aspect of civilization, not all civilizations have the same culture. In short, culture is a component of civilization, but civilization is a broader concept that includes many other aspects of society beyond culture
it’s a connected “urban” communities and technological advancement thing…mostly technological advancements though…
Memphis offered five 1RPs for Mikal at the trade deadile that Tsai & Marks rejected. Leon would have to do a lot better than that and they’re not dumb to want RJ and his contract back. IQ + Fournier + 4 picks & swaps should get it done.
oh, and how cool is it there were wooly rhinos roaming europe for a while…supposedly they taste like elk, i don’t know what elk tastes like though…
elk must taste good – cuz all those wooly rhinos got ate…
i need to check the dates, but, the human population in europe stayed really low (like less than 10,000 people) for a really long time (maybe until like 30k bp)…
i guess there are plenty examples of even recent/present cultures in the world which neither expanded their population significantly, or figured out any cool new stuff…to help them accumulate more stuff…
Memphis, Tennessee or Memphis, Egypt? (Sorry, I’m having trouble keeping track of what century this thread is operating in…)
well, the pyramids aren’t tombs you know…
