is tomorrow finally today…
of all the holidays here in the states, hands down Labor Day is my favorite…
beyond my appreciation for its theme, I love that there are minimal expectations for participation, in anything…
yeah, go labor day…
I’m excited for the Shai talk…I’m skeptical of his health and whether he can lead out on the floor…
I need to look at his numbers some…
I’d have to rank the E Street Band at the top of the list. They win on sheer musical talent and charisma, and they were an integral part of a lot of really great records.
The Heartbreakers (I assume Tom Petty’s backing band and not the CBGB outfit led by Johnny Thunders) would be #2. Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench can hang with their E Street counterparts Nils Lofgren and Roy Bittan for sure.
Crazy Horse ranks a very strong #3, and are kind of an apples and oranges comparison to the great backing bands that rank above them. They’re way more rough around the edges, they have that explosive garagey sound. Depending on your criteria you could rank them #1.
The News and the Silver Bullet band are kind of a push, both are perfectly competent backing bands that lack a distinct character or notable standout players.
Coming in behind them are The Range, with their whistle-clean MOR stylings that pair well with a glass of chardonnay and give off a vague scent of vanilla-flavored Yankee Candle.
Built To Spill were really poised for greatness there for a minute– they had those three great first albums: There’s Nothing Wrong With Love, Perfect From Now On, and Keep It Like A Secret. Those three really hold up.
To me, they fell completely off a cliff after that, as their records just degenerated into mid-tempo meanderings that were devoid of hooks and memorable parts. I feel like Tame Impala has followed a similar arc– three really strong albums followed by a distillation of their formula into something bland and indistinct.
One of my best friends is a Built To Spill fanatic. She doesn’t really keep up with new music that much anymore except for when there’s a new BTS release every five years or whatever. She’s a true believer. She doesn’t even really like any of their post-Keep It Like A Secret albums, but she keeps giving them that benefit of the doubt.
Wow, we have the morning news bot up again. We have the polls, although not tested yet. This was a fantastic job! Thank you very much, Mike K! 🙂 And yeah, if you set up a GoFundMe page i’ll do my part too. 😉 Adjusted to my reality, of course, as we here in Portugal don’t earn the same as you guys in the US. 😛
Me too, Geo. It’ll be weeks of great analysis of what our team would be able to achieve with Shai, just for him to go to Detroit at the last minute. To go form a big 3 super backcourt with Cade and Ivey. 😛
Pretty depressing Macri newsletter today: https://knicksfilmschool.substack.com/p/not-great-leon?utm_source=substack&utm_medium=email&utm_content=share
Gist is: 1)Leon really wanted Mitchell and was shocked when Ainge didn’t give them one last chance to counter, 2)The FO overestimated the value of all the protected picks they’ve acquired, 3)The plan remains trying to win as many games as possible, even if it means not playing the kids as much (and finding out what Obi, IQ, et al can do given free rein).
Nothing is particularly new here, but to see it all laid out by one of the team’s most relentless optimists was pretty sobering. So we have to root for one of these outcomes:
1)RJ and/or other kids make such a leap that the team is good as a result of them, and Thibs can’t resist playing them over Randle, Fournier, and Rose.
2)One or more of our remaining vets gets hurt, forcing Thibs’ hands re: the rotation. (I am not holding my breath for a trade, though Macri suggested that at least some in the front office are now willing to attach a pick to unload Randle.)
3)The team plays awfully, resulting in the firing of Thibs and/or the team getting a good pick in what seems to be a stacked lottery.
So we more or less have to hope for the FO and coach’s plan to implode. As a former Yankee manager liked to say, it’s not what you want.
I hope it’s option #1, Alan. But if it’s #3, and although Leon didn’t make any grave mistake, he’ll be just another POBO/GM that won’t be here longer than 3 seasons, like the majority of his predecessors of the Dolan era.
Built To Spill were really poised for greatness there for a minute
Could it be the difference between bands that achieve greatness and those that don’t (at least in the indie-rock world) is the ability to put on a good live show? Like if this is what a polished BTS concert looks like after 30 years of touring, what the heck did they do on stage in the early 90s?
I put BTS into the category of “was around in the 90s, but I didn’t bother learning about them until the 00s” with Luna, and Beulah.

If this isn’t an analogy for being a New York Knicks fan, I don’t know what is.
JK47 you have real talent for writing about music. It’s not just your knowledge but you have an excellent way of making something complex sound simple so a lay person can understand. Ever since you explained “the pocket” to me I listen to music in a whole new way.
Also lines like this are priceless:

It would be fitting if the next guy we target is another player we could have drafted the year we selected a bust.
SGA has missed 12, 37, and 26 games since playing 82 in his rookie season. I haven’t done a deep dive on the reasons but that strikes me as a concern.
Our front office seems to work well with Presti. Our two trades with him were the two best trades this regime has made.
I get the sense that Presti is more of “let’s work together and create a fair deal where no one gets ripped off” kind of guy, as opposed to a “pig” like Ainge. He did set a new market high with the PG trade, but he smartly framed that as “you’re getting Kawhi in this trade, too.” It was a fair deal.
On the bright side, it almost always does.
From the Macri newsletter Alan linked to:
Wow. That is not the picture of Cool Hand Luke. That’s the work of a rank amateur.
A new thread is up. 😉
It basically says Utah wanted what NY wasn’t willing to give but Cleveland was. It seems like the market worked. The two teams whose needs and assets matched what was available ended up making the deal. I don’t find that shocking nor dismaying.
And If you want to hear why Cleveland might not end up that good and that NY probably made the correct decision, you can listen the the new Dunc’d On podcast. They expressed skepticism of Cleveland’s new line up much better than I did. Not that they think Cleveland will be bad or necessarily made the wrong decision, they just think they might not be great despite their four really talented players.
