16-17 Game Thread: Knicks @ Lakers

The Knicks head to Los Angeles to take on an interesting Lakers team. They are not a particularly GOOD team, but hell, at least they’re fun to watch, unlike some of these other recent shitty teams that the Knicks have played (have I mentioned how much I hate the Timberwolves?).

Derrick Rose returns tonight, so the Knicks should win this one.

Let’s go, Knicks!

O’Quinn will miss tonight’s game with a sprained ankle. Let’s go Willy (And Plumlee).

that’s funny…Brian – the knicks own personal grim reaper…

have a chance to catch some Lakers games out here – sooooooo, glad kobe’s gone….

the Lakers got a fun young team, Luke can really coach…not sure if russell is in tonight, he can light it up…Julius Randle and Larry Nance Jr are real fun to watch play…Clarkson is usually a little up and down…randle plays a little of that dreymond green role for la…he can handle the ball well – hope he has a bad night tonight…

Not having O’Quinn hurts a ton. If Noah truly can’t play upwards of 25-30 minutes we might be in trouble.

If we played the drinking game anytime the Knicks allowed a backdoor layup/dunk we’d all be wasted as shit when the game was over.

@BBA,

The Jets offense is worse.

D Rose out here ballin like it’s 2011!

Somehow the Giants offense with all the weapons they have they can never seem to do shit.

Thats a very close call.
Thankfully the Lakers defense is slightly worse than the Knicks so far

I don’t mind Melo’s 1 for 5 shooting and matador D because at least he hasn’t been holding the ball as long. Hopefully he’ll heat up soon.

Hernangomez has great offensive footwork in the low post and good eye-hand coordination. I believe he is going to be a great return for a second round pick traded to Philly.

it’s painful watching the giants play offense…remember before the year started and everyone was worried about the defense…

wow, haven’t seen that many knicks games this year – kp sure is fun to watch…

You gotta think Courtney Lee is a better defender than he’s been in NY. Josh Hart would be a great fill in for him.

Noah is getting better as the season progresses it seems.

Suffocating D by both teams resulting in 2 turnovers by the Knicks and 3 for the Lakers in the 1st half.

The Lakers look pretty terrible and they constantly make dumb mistakes. Russell plays like a freakin’ moron.

The Knicks don’t pull away from teams because they can’t defend, their offense is not the problem.

Knick strategy on defense:

1. Hope that D-Russ does something ridiculously stupid
2. Hope that Porzingis blocks a shot at the rim

Lance Thomas is the Knicks best defender by far. Very good off the ball which is rare on this team since it’s filled with guys that constantly lose their man.

D’Angelo Russell has played decent ball at times for the Lakers this season. This game is not one of those times.

Brandon Ingram should probably not be getting playing time.

The Knicks are legit 11 deep. The starting 5 plus Jennings, Holiday, LT, Kuz, O’Quinn, and Hernangomez all give us good minutes relative to what we ask from them.

Knicks are due to blow one of these games, hopefully tonight is not the night they blow one.

We have really missed KOQ tonight. Willy has a lot of boards but he’s been a nightmare on D. Melo please hit a shot.

If the Knicks lose this game feel free to blame Melo, he’s been beyond awful tonight on both ends of the court.

Brandon Ingram is a black hole out there. He looks very far away from contributing as an NBA player.

Lakers: “Let’s keep driving the ball right at the tall skinny white guy. Maybe he won’t keep blocking it!”

Jennings with an unbelievable series on offense

KP dominant on defense

Melo thankfully never touched the ball

The current Giants OL makes me appreciate how underrated the Giants OL was during their 2 Super Bowl wining seasons.

Adjectives that come to mind when describing the Lakers: young, talented, scrappy. Adjectives that don’t come to mind: smart, savvy.

KP getting pushed out of low post position by the Lakers rookie string bean is not a good sign.

is it eli, is it the o-line, is it both…hard to tell sometimes…

the defense is right though…I don’t mind ending the game on d…

yeah, guess it’s gonna take a few years for kp to work his way into playing an effective 5…not…

This Giants D is as good as the 2007 team’s and that’s w/o JPP for probably the rest of the season. Spags can coach a D when he has talent.

wow, the g-men never fail to surprise and confuse – great win…knicks need to make it 2 for 2 today…

It’s incredible that the only thing you have to do with a lead is avoid giving up 3pters and 3pt plays but that’s all the Knicks seem to do when they get a lead.

So KP is 26/11/7 blks (seems low honestly) and Rose is 11-15; hard to believe they are neck and neck with the Lakers

I’m a Dallas fan but need to show love to Janoris Jenkins out of Pahokee, Fl. All those times chasing rabbits paid off.

That was not a wild three. That was a good open 3 in transition. I still would have liked him not to shoot it though

Jennings huge down the stretch. Melo, not so much. That was a horrible quick 3 he took and then the turnover in the backcourt. Not good

I’m glad Melo, KP and Rose get along. However, I have no doubt that Jennings, Noah and others hate Melo’s decision making and would smack him if they could…

They’re frustrating to watch but this team is pretty fun to cheer for since they somehow always hold on to win these games.

Using TuneIn radio I listened to the game on the Lakers Radio play by play, with John Ireland and Mychal Thompson.

–They were effusive in praise of KP. Said he was better than some better hall of famers.
–Dumbfounded when they took KP out “They should feature KP more.”
–They would chastise Knicks for allowing Melo to keep shooting poorly
–Spoke, in general, well of Knicks

Walton didn’t just leave the terrible Brandon Ingram in the game, he was actually running the offense through Ingram.

Thanks, Luke!

A lot went right tonight given no KOQ and an off Melo shooting game. They only stayed close early because Deng kept hitting pull up threes.

Mychal Thompson: “KP should learn veteran trick and hold on to the ball late in game so he can shoot free throws and pad his stats.” KP instead gave the ball to Melo to keep his captain happy…

Ooops Not John Ireland, Doug Mann is announcer

They rarely are all in sink offensively when it comes to shooting but it always seem like they pick each other in other areas. If they ever gel and become more consistent they might really take off.

I spent so many years just wishing the a Knicks could have a quality point guard. (One that doesn’t eat Vaseline, I guess.)

And now we have two. I can go to sleep happy.

Had the game ticking over on ESPN while at work. How did LAL get the last 3 points? They went from 109 to 112 in the last 8 seconds with no actual play registering the score.

This is what kills me about the NBA schedule. Knicks just played 2 games in California, now fly to Phoenix for 1 game before returning back to California for 1 game then going to Denver. Why not have them play the 3 games in California then go to Phoenix and Denver??

Mychal Thompson: “KP should learn veteran trick and hold on to the ball late in game so he can shoot free throws and pad his stats.” KP instead gave the ball to Melo to keep his captain happy…

better ball handler and free shooter like the last one with Lee and Melo

Their last bucket was a ridiculously long three.

Thanks! Literally nothing came up so it seemed odd they just got 3 points from nowhere ha ha

best overall game from kp so far this season… got to line… impactful on defense…

rose… if that floater is for real like it looked this game then i can live with a poor man’s tony parker.. i don’t think it’s for real though…

If Rose continues to play this way he should be extended STAT. Happy that Melo distributed the ball. So proud of my boy KP playing his best game on a bad knee.

Go back and read the “who is the Knicks MVP” thread and see how silly some of you sound.

and before all the rose advocates get all giddy…. he still only got to the line twice and had a 2/2 assist/to ratio…

Rose is getting great shots (for him), and his shot distribution and finishing foretold a rising efficiency.

KP with a dominant game. Knicks winning consistently even when 1 of their top 3 plays horribly on offense.

and before all the rose advocates get all giddy…. he still only got to the line twice and had a 2/2 assist/to ratio…

I want to think this is a joke of some sort.

Jennings, KP, and Rose overcame Melo doing his best to help the Knicks lose tonight.
On several of those fourth quarter shots by Jennings I was literally cringing when he took them only to watch them splash nothing but net. Great game by BJ.

KP just had the first game in NBA history of at least 25 pts 10 rebs 7 blocks with 3x 3FGM.

Too bad Derrick Rose isn’t a scoring threat or this team might actually be good, like winning 6 out of their last 7 or something!

I want to think this is a joke of some sort.

Well, ideally you’d like to see him produce in a way that seems more sustainable. He’s not going to shoot 12/16 every night. We should take it and be happy but it’s not the kind of game that should have people screaming extension.

The Lakers suck really bad right now– they’re 3-11 over their last 14 with many of those losses coming by lopsided margins. But still you have to give the Knicks credit for holding serve and winning the road game against the bad team.

The Knicks’ defense still looks pretty soft though. Great work near the rim by Porzingis in this game saved the day. I’m still not seeing the magic of Joakim Noah, who seems a step slow on the defensive end. The wing defenders are also slow of foot and don’t rotate well. Rose and Jennings aren’t great at containing penetration and they’re not great at fighting through screens.

I don’t see any easy solutions on the defensive end for this team. The Knicks can score, but on defense they just don’t seem to have the horses. The Lakers gave away a LOT of possessions in this game with foolish offensive play, and they still scored 112.

“KP just had the first game in NBA history of at least 25 pts 10 rebs 7 blocks with 3x 3FGM.”

Just wow

I really hope Phil sees the writing on the wall with Noah and finds a way to move him to a contender before the trade deadline. The Noah contract is pretty much the biggest bummer about this team going forward.

Noah was needed more in the last game against Boogie. He is necessary against the league’s big brutes.

FWIW, Melo’s is typically a slow starter offensively.

Who has EVER screamed extension besides rueb?

@147 – it’s not a joke… what i’m saying is that rose did well in an unsustainable way… it happened though and it led to a win…

Why not? Do you want to end up with Jrue for more money or an unproven rookie next year at the point?

Lakers average 110 points per game at home, and average 100 ppg on the road.

Knuicks are just 15th in efg% allowed defensively, but 29th in defensive rebounding. Noah does a lot of good things defensively and should be playing more because he addresses the Knicks biggest issue.

“what i’m saying is that rose did well in an unsustainable way… it happened though and it led to a win”

his incredibly bad jump shooting was not sustainable. JFC.. He’s due for these kinds of games.

He’s taking GREAT shots.

Maybe he SHOULD be playing more, but the question is CAN he play more? His fitness level does not look so good to me, and I think that’s a big reason he is only playing 22 MPG. The back end of that contract is going to be flat out fugly.

“i don’t think those floaters are great shots… at least for rose historically”

A career high percentage of Rose’s shots are coming in the paint, where Rose remains a great finisher (TS above 60 every year but last season).

He’s not taking nearly as many jumpers as he used to, including 3s (where Rose has a TS well below 50).

He’s playing ideally. If he were merely shooting close to career average on jumpers, his TS would be at a career high level.

That’s how much his shot distribution has improved with the Knicks.

“Maybe he SHOULD be playing more, but the question is CAN he play more? His fitness level does not look so good to me, and I think that’s a big reason he is only playing 22 MPG. The back end of that contract is going to be flat out fugly.”

he’s looked better and better to me.

His fg % is the best since 2011, and his finishing at the rim far better than he has the previous two years.

If he figures out how to shoot free-throws again, he’s going to be a big benefit on both ends of the court.

Knicks are not just awful at def reb, they are also 27th in FT/FGA and 23rd in forcing turnovers. They are bad at every aspect of defense except that so far they are “average” at opposing EFG%. There is a reason they are 26th in defensive efficiency and its not just because they are bad at defensive rebounding although that is a huge problem obviously.

True, they do foul far too often and that may be related to their inability to box out.

But over time, I like the odds of the Knicks improving defensively with Noah and KP inside.

I think they can become average.

His fg % is the best since 2011, and his finishing at the rim far better than he has the previous two years.

He’s 38 for 78 on the season from the floor– hey, great, that’s a .487 percentage! Turn three of those into misses though, and he’s shooting the same shitty .445 percentage he shot two years ago. It seems kind of ridiculous to get excited that his FG% is the best it’s been since 2011, this is a tiny sample size because he hardly ever shoots the ball. His passing has some value on offense and he’s a fine offensive rebounder, but he also only plays the minutes of a bench player and seems to require frequent rest.

If he’s only going to be playing 22 MPG for $18M, those better be some kickass minutes. And they’re not really.

I was at the game with my gf (a Laker fan). What fun!!!

Rose was M.O.N.E.Y with that floater tonight. The Lakers had no way to keep him out the paint. I remember someone saying how Jennings dies on picks and he sure nuff got obliterated on one, and overall, his D was soft. But his shot making kept the Lakers at bay in the 4th Q. Melo was waaay off all night esp on his 3s, and didn’t play up on Deng, but he passed well, esp out of double teams.

KP got his shot back tonight – how about that and-1 where he got elbow-shoved in the ribs and still hit the J off-balance! And think about this: he had 26 pts, and he still doesn’t have the strength yet to punish smaller forwards and guards down low. On D, btwn him and Hernangomez, they’re gonna form a great 1-2 inside punch in the near future. Their rebounding and paint protection is what allowed the Knicks to build their leads tonight.

I thought Rose’s D was okay tonight. Jennings, not so much. But the overall weakness of the perimeter D is part of what kept the Lakers in it.

This team gets caught reaching alot on fouls involving shot attempts, and fouling three-point shooters has got to stop.

yeah but our pythag still is bad so no one should be happy and the Knicks should have lost

hey cdiggy – way to bring home the win!!!

got to ask – was you low key representing (hat, maybe t-shirt under a jacket) – or did you go full throttle head to toe knickerbocker gear 🙂

I had to miss the game, as my sister-in-law won a charity auction so we got to go hang out at NBC Sports in Stanford to watch Football Night in America and hang out with Tony Dungy and Rodney Harrison. We got to sit on the Football Night in America set. Pretty cool stuff, but I had to just follow the game on my phone. Sounded like just the sort of fun win that I was expecting! This west coast stretch is awesome. Give us your tired, your hungry, your shitty teams and the Knicks will beat their asses! It’s as it should be. 🙂

@Brian: hey that’s a pretty awesome reason to miss watching the game tho.

@Geo: I need to re-up on Knick gear, which is hard to do out here when you don’t live near a Dick’s or major mall (I left my Stoudemire shirt back in NY bc my ex bought it, lol). I did rep the colors: orange tshirt, blue jacket, blue jeans, orange Yankee fitted.

Lots of folk @ Staples last night reppin Knick gear… even spotted a dude with an Oakley jersey! That’s dedication!

@Brian: hey that’s a pretty awesome reason to miss watching the game tho.

Yeah, it was a lot of fun!
