2024-25 Game Thread: Knicks @ Warriors – Take me Down to California, Baby

The Knicks have a chance to get back to 20 games over .500 with a big statement game against the new-look Warriors in San Francisco.

This one will be tough, but the Knicks are bound to win one of these, right? Just by luck more than anything, the other teams are bound to have offdays. The Lakers almost beat the Nuggets while playing with the following starting lineup:

I hate the Warriors. I’d love to beat them tonight, but it’s going to be tough short handed on the road. I’d like to see some Towns and Mitch tonight to see if we can give them some trouble with size.

They gave a kid in the St John’s game a tech for holding out 3 fingers after making a 3, completely absurd

I thought the game was one hour later, but it’s that time of the year where we have a 4h differential for a few weeks.

I think we win almost all our challenges, and now we’re not valuing it, but it can come handy in the playoffs.

They are REALLY not calling fouls in this game. Keeps the action moving with a national audience, but given some of the characters in this game, that’s a potentially dangerous ploy…

OG has made some refinements to his dribble drive game…still shaky ..but better

Pepper, was just thinking that about OG. He’s putting his shoulder into his defender and moving them under the basket like Randle used to do. An actual power forward move. Don’t remember that earlier in the year.

Of course, then he has to make a layup…

Dribbling into traffic and losing the ball should be another thing OG learned from Randle…

Butler gets way more respect from the refs than he deserves

I really wish someone would deck Draymond Green and break his jaw. He’s such a POS. And this is coming from a guy that releases insects from his house.

There’s something wrong with that rule. If you are backing up and the guy plows into you aggressively that’s way different than moving left or right to cut him off and making contact.

Mitch just walking around. And Doris talking shit about him. And she’s talking truth.

While it has some defensive chops this lineup with Hart, Precious and Mitch together is basically unplayable on offense, at least in half court sets.

Don’t think it’s a lucky bounce when our center stands at the foul line while the play goes on.

I am a proponent of trying lots of different lineups in the regular season but that one was insane

Well since we’re normally down 30 by halftime on ABC games, I guess so far so good?

I know, Max — normally I don’t mind Precious, take the good with the bad. Just frustrated by three straight very bads.

We controlled the paint and rebounds but had an issue with the 3pt line to start. Warriors made 6-7 three pointers, almost all of them uncontested. As we fixed this, Towns had to sit with three fouls, our offense stalled, and our defense also got messed up because Mitch and Achiuwa have been awful. If not for Deuce we’d be down by more.

We are doing remarkably well given Brunson is out, Towns hardly played and Precious is playing for Golden State.

Josh with 6 assists but no points on three shots, and weirdly only one rebound so far. I’d like to see the old Josh show up.

Precious is OK as a 3rd string player. He just can’t have a role when we are healthy. If we aren’t healthy we probably aren’t going anywhere anyway.

I guess the anxiety about re-signing UFA Precious Achiuwa after the season will not be what it was for iHart…

We’re shooting 43% on threes compared to their 35.7%. But they’ve shot literally twice as many. So they have 12 more points from three.

Deuce has come so far in three years, it’s really impressive

I love Deuce’s D, but he’s just so short, that when he plays big guards, they literally shoot over him. It’s not ideal.

It’s unusual that other teams don’t attack KAT as much as the Warriors have been. You’d think this would be a bit of a blueprint for other teams, right?

Yeah, getting shot over happens a lot more with Shamet and Payne, who are also slight. Deuce can body people out of their comfort zone with his football background. Also seven foot wingspan…

You really have to fight over those screens and stop the greatest shooter in NBA history from getting his shot off.

The main thing about Deuce is that he gives 100% all the time he is on the court, which is great. As we’ve seen, even a Hall of Famer like Steph doesn’t do that all of the time.

The defense is quite a bit better going from Brunson to Deuce and adding Mitch even though Mitch is not 100% yet.

I get that KAT is just physically a bad defender but him not putting his arms up drives me insane

I wonder if KAT is dropping off of Steph because he doesn’t want to pick up his 4th…

If OG could just develop ONE move this summer

I thought for sure he was going to show up with either an improved handle or finish in non dunking situations and maybe both, but we got neither. It doesn’t have to be dramatic improvement. He just has to get out of the negative area.

I have almost no doubt Kolek would run the offense better. I wish Thibs gave him some run during the season. If he can’t handle it defensively so be it. But there were plenty of opportunities to give him a few minutes of development time.

KAT apparently good to take all the shots. He’s like Payne except good….

They tied the game and then did their best to throw it away, bad decision after bad shot after dumb turnover…

The NBA refs hate Towns. He gets so many ticky tack fouls and gets mugged regularly and can’t get a call. Thibs should be complaining to the league regularly.

Oh, the Knicks had some dumb plays, too. I think the Warriors had more, that’s all. They just also made some awesome plays, too, and the Knicks have a lot less of those.

that shouting match between thibs and hart seems like the big take away from this game.

Boy, did we miss a point guard today! We fought hard but our offense was a mess and the Warriors experienced enough to exploit every little crevice they could find offensively.

The silver lining is that the team has been playing much better defense for several games now. This has been their best defensive stretch of the season.

Yeah, I’m okay with this loss. They played hard, but only four Knicks actually showed up. No other Knick scored more than 2 points…

KAT had a great offensive game. The defensive issues are really tough to stomach.

The Warriors scored 97 points, they didn’t lose because of defense . They’re pretty good on that end with just Towns and no Brunson.

In a combined 95 minutes (two player-games), Josh, Cam, Shamet, Mitch, and Precious were a combined 2-19, including 0-7 from 3 and 0-0 from the FT line. That’s just impossible to overcome.

Does it mean anything? No, not really. Was it a really annoying loss? Yes, very much

I hate moral victories but the Warriors are very good and this was a road game.

IMO we have to improve the backup PG situation. That was part of the problem on offense tonight. Payne is what he is. He’s more of a scorer that will run hot and cold, but he’s not the kind of PG that will break down a defense and organize the offense. I think Kolek is. I was hoping Kolek would get his chance this year, but it looks like it’s not to be. Maybe next year he’ll be ready to get some backup run.

We need Towns with Mitch.

WTF is the point of keeping them apart? We’ll get better backup minutes from Mitch than we had previously, but then we are stuck with the Towns and Brunson issues on defense. Either Towns can defend PF next to Mitch or he can’t. Let’s find out, but he can’t be the C with Brunson without giving up a lot defensively. We have to find out where we are and what we need both for the playoffs and any off season moves.

The Josh Hart issue isn’t going away, he cramps the court and will be playing 30 plus minutes a game.

I can only imagine what Thibs would have to go through had we lost 126-123 to the Wizards at home tonight. Lol!

This is correct. He doesn’t have the same lift and quickness he used to have. I hope these are only temporary conditioning and game rhythm issues, though I start suspecting the numerous surgeries he has had.
