Pretty amazing starting pitching the Mets are getting so far this month. WTH got into David Peterson? I guess less strikeouts is more for him. Even Tylor Megill is now contributing, and Manaea and Severino just keep rolling on.
I really thought the starting pitching would be the weak spot down the stretch. Wrong again!
Bummer for Lindor though. I was really hoping to see a 30/30 with 100 RBI and 100 runs from him
Megill’s last two games are the most shocking to me. The coaching staff has pretty much coached up every starting pitcher in relationship to pre-season expectations.
LA Acuna also pretty surprising considering how poorly he hit in AAA.
I have had exactly two feelings about the Yankees this season, with nothing in between:
1) we’re a juggernaut
2) we fucking suck
Right now I’m back to #1, baby. The lineup finally feels complete, the bullpen looks much better than even a month ago, and the starters look like they can at least Frankenstein themselves to being championship worthy.
In like a week I’ll probably think we’re getting swept in the first round though.

David Peterson always gave up a lot of home runs and that’s why he was never very good. This year he has cut his HR/FB rate to an elite level. He also got thrashed for a .370 BABIP last year, and this year it’s down at league average.
It seems almost odd to say this given the Mets’ sky-high payroll, but this is the most “found money” kind of season I can remember the Mets ever having. They are spending $70M on players who are not even on the roster, papering over the mistakes of the previous regime with scrap heap players. Several top 100 prospects have missed essentially the entire season with injuries, and the ones who didn’t get hurt didn’t play well either.
Next year they will have at least four recent top 100 prospects starting the year at AAA (Gilbert, Jett Williams, Sproat, Mauricio) and will hopefully getting contributions at the MLB level from another (Christian Scott). Kodai Senga may actually return next week and could be a top of rotation piece at an attractive price next year.
They’ll have holes to fill, but as of today they will be shedding a monstrous $180M from their payroll next year. They will have money to spend, a highly competent executive to spend the money, and a small fleet of prospects who could contribute soon. It has been amazing what Stearns has been able to do in this transitional year. I can’t wait to see what he can do once he can really let it rip.

The ‘24 Yankees ups and downs hasn’t been surprising to me. The downs came between June 16 and July 27. Those 6 weeks they went 10-23 and looked awful.
Why? Believe it or not it was the loss of Anthony Rizzo.
Rizzo, isn’t really good any longer. Let’s face it. He’s a .230 hitter at this point in his career. But the problem was that when he went down after his June 16 start, his primary replacement became DJ LeMahieu. DJ’s BA on June 16 was .176 and guess what it was on July 27. It was .176. I guess that means he batted .176, right? That 50 point drop in BA started killing the Yankees. No. DJ didn’t play 1B all the time. Ben Rice became the next level replacement player in the lineup. Guess what his BA was: .174!
How did Cashman solve that? He traded for Jazz Chisolm. Since the trade on July 27th the Yankees are 27-18. Now with Chisolm and Rizzo instead of DJ and Rice, the lineup is respectable.
I also think if you look at Gleyber’s stats since end of July till now…it is a different person…that has also helped…but…i think the lack of a real lock down starter (Cole seems to have lost a bit) and poor hitting with RISP will be their downfall…that and the inevitable meeting with their kryptonite, i.e,. the Astros…
If there’s an expansion draft at the end of next season, it’s clear which 8 players you protect. Or is it? In other words, will any of the rookies step up enough to protect over McBride? And if so, who?
Personally I’m hoping it would be Dadiet, but if I had to bet I’d put my money on Kolek.

Glyber’s BA on June 16 was .226 and in that horrible stretch through July 27th for the Yankees it actually rose to .236. However, since then his BA has risen to .255 today. Torres certainly didn’t rise to the occasion in through July but his revival when the Yankees started to turn it around certainly has fueled the turn-around. And that .365 September BA is elite.
But let’s not fool ourselves. Glyber & Rizzo are gone after this season. Judge make $40M per year. Soto’s going to command $50 or more. He currently earns $31. That’s $19+M the Yankees have to find. Glyber makes $14.2M and Rizzo $17M and both are UFAs. That’s where Soto’s getting his money from.
I’m actually more optimistic about the Yankees pitching staff heading into October than the lineup. The pitching staff is totally healthy and they have a very deep rotation which is what carried them in their hot start to the season even without Cole.
The fear is the lineup going thru their usual October struggles but with guys like Jazz, Volpe and Jasson they have a speed dynamic they’ve never had before. Granted they’re gonna have to actually get on base to be able to utilize their speed.
But the AL is very mediocre this year, the Yankees should finish with the best record in the AL for the first time since 2012.

Dare I say they were pretty affordable at fifty bucks? Someone tried to interest me in some Taylor Swift tickets at 3000 a pop. Which seems like the height of insanity.
Also, I am very ready for Knicks basketball. Watching Jalen work on offense and OG on defense is the most satisfying thing my sports fandom has given me in a long time.

I would have gone with Jazz leading off, but this is working now. .
Mets haven’t been getting reasonably full houses lately, I’m not sure why. I guess being bad last year and the slow start probably killed advanced sales.
I understand that the financial picture, assuming we re-sign Soto, probably forces Gleyber out. But I’m not sure what the plan is for the infield going forward and that’s especially true if/when Gleyber walks.
Jazz should be able to hold down 2B or 3B, and I’m actually higher on Volpe than most–he wouldn’t be the first player to struggle at the plate despite being toolsy for his first few seasons, and he adds a ton in the field and on the basepaths.
This of course leaves two gaping holes at either 2B or 3B and 1B. Guess we’ll figure it out after the parade.
Maybe they can “Gleyber” Volpe and make him a 2nd baseman and then have Peraza as SS next yr, chisholm at 3rd and then Rice or some free agent pick up at 1B….
I’m not sure I’ve heard the term general manager used with college athletics…
I wonder if that role has been around a while, or is a result of NIL and all the transfer portal activity that happens now…

Isn’t Volpe a very slick defensive shortstop? Seems like you’d be torpedoing his value moving him off SS. His defensive metrics are good enough that he’s still a nice player despite his bat falling off a bit down the stretch. If he hits a little bit then you’re talking about a 4-5 WAR player pretty easily.

Peraza has struggled the last couple of years, but it also feels like he was mishandled a bit. I wonder what would happen if they just gave him the 2B or 3B job (depending on where they want to play Jazz next year) and let him play without feeling like he could lose the job at any moment.
Volpe offensively is making me miss Wayne Tolleson.
I would rather they play Peraza/Volpe/Jazz/Rizzo (or Cabrera), re-sign Soto, and sign Corbin Burnes than sign Bergman or whatever overpriced infielder Cashman has his eyes on. Judge/Soto/Martian in the outfield, Giancarlo at albatross.
Austin Wells as the catcher makes up for some weaker hitters elsewhere.
all i really noticed of austin for the majority of the season is that they have him hitting 4th or 5th, and he’s producing…and he has a great mustache…
didn’t even realize he was a rookie…or the same player who seemed like a great draft choice, years ago…

Merideth though is probably my all time fave team sideline reporter…both extremely hot and very cool all at the same time…
I wonder if Soto could play 1st base. Judge to 1st in theory is the better move, to preserve his body longer. But he’s a genuinely good defensive outfielder. Soto is more in the Julius Randle category, where if he’s focusing on that side of things, he can mostly be solid, but he can get distracted and/or have bad instincts. Moving him to 1st allows us to play the Martian, maybe slot in Spencer Jones if he ever figures out how to hit, keep Judge out of center, etc.
I doubt Jones will be ready next year, if ever. 36% strikeout rate in AA is no bueno.
Anyway, back to Knicks talk to spare those who care not for America’s (former) Pastime….
I honestly don’t understand why people expect that Soto is coming back. Steve Cohen is probably going to outbid Hal by $100M.
I don’t expect he will, I just think it’s better than 50%
