Interesting conversation between Katz and Edwards in terms of covering the Knicks this morning in The Athletic. Nothing electric in there, but interesting. I’ll miss Fred.
Agree.
The point I was trying to make is that because the lineup samples are so small, it’s much harder to trust the data if it doesn’t also make basketball sense or you don’t at least have some visual evidence of why it’s working.
His default position is to trust the data if it also makes basketball sense to him and he can see the benefits on the court, but to not trust the data otherwise.
My own position would be if it seems to be working based on the data but I’m not sure if that’s statisical noise because I don’t quite understand why it’s working, I should at least keep experimenting a bit to try to figure that out.

Just a guess but I’m thinking that Sims is our starter when the season begins because (I’m guessing) Mitch won’t be quite ready to play until December. This also affords the Knicks the opportunity to really see how their back center situation really is. I don’t trust Precious and Randle to handle big bigs like Embiid, Wembi, the Joker, etc. The team needs length. So my last guess is that a trade deadline package involving Achiuwa, Deuce, the rookies and picks will be bait for a real-time center that could push Mitch into the backup roll he belongs in.

Let’s assume that Leon and Gersson are charged with proffesional development of their stuborn coach who refuses to recognize the benefits of space created by a stretch 5 as a net positive. Since necessity is the mother of all inventions (and development through experimentation), how but you just force him to evolve by taking away his comfort space and limiting his options?
Kind of funny the narrative on Thibs persists even here when in fact the numbers say that he’s already been doing all the stuff guys say he would have to be forced to do

GNYGNYG, any specific candidates in mind?
I’m psyched for the season to begin–and also scared. Feels like we’ve been playing with house money the last few years, but now there are real expectations. Leon’s assembled a team that can definitely live up to them, but at the same time, there’s so much parity in the league that it might only take a few unlucky breaks to go from top-seed to play-in hopeful. That said, my questions of the moment:
1) Which team do you see as having the best chance to exceed expectations?
2) Which team has biggest disappointment potential?
For my own answers, I’ll say San Antonio for exceeding expectations bc Wemby is bonkers, and for biggest disappointment potential, I’ll say Denver. (My maybe convoluted thinking: I could see pretty much any of the West’s top 9 teams finishing in any order 1-9, but Denver’s the only one that won’t have a good/anticipated excuse if they finish near the bottom of that pack.)
Looks like Westchester made a bunch of trades today. Charlie Brown and Skapintsev are both on their way out.
Perhaps Thibs sees the data we see, supplemented with data the Knicks pay for and we don’t see, evaluates line ups in practices that we don’t see, and has conversations with players that we don’t hear. Leon is paying him 10million a year because he is doing that and knows exactly how he uses the data.
My view is that Leon extending Thibs AFTER assembling the roster is affirmation that we have the coach to win.
Can you name one thing Thibs always does that I never thought he would do?
I always thought Thibs would embrace the 3 ball, I lauded his player development skills, and I’m also on record as predicting he will embrace small ball lineups with Randle at the 5.
I just don’t think he’s as committed to lineup data as he presents himself to be. That’s not a narrative, it’s a fact.
Thibs is more willing to use Randle at the 5 now cause he has OG instead of Obi to play at the 4. Plus it helps having better perimeter defenders especially obviously Bridges.
This roster is built now to allow Randle to play some minutes at Center, the previous rosters weren’t.
I hate to even think it aloud, but I think Cleveland could pretty easily make it to the ECF this season…

I have no idea what you thought he would do. But the argument the last few days had been that “Thibs ignores lineup data if it doesn’t fit his philosophy.” That isn’t true. For example, he’s all about defense and he’s an antiquated idea of offense. No, actually he’s been very flexible and has had better offenses since his days in Minny. Thibs won’t play more than eight guys, HIS guys. No, actually he started last season playing 10 until it became clear it wasn’t working. Thibs wants to walk it up and play at a slow pace. No, actually he started last season using our depth to run – not top in the league in pace the first months but pretty high. Then, again, it wasn’t working, so he slowed us to the point we were last in pace and turned is into a ball-control team – recognizing that rebounding and low TOs were the key to our efficiency. Thibs isn’t flexible and only wants things done his way. Well, actually, he rebuilt our offense in a few weeks once Julius went down to maximize players’ skill sets. And oh yes, once teams realized JB was our only threat and they started keying on him, he switched to a movement offense to get JB looks he wasn’t getting.
I could go on – for instance, how we became a big 3-ball shooting team once we had the players for it, despite people saying he couldn’t create a modern offense, or how he changed defensive schemes once he had OG, etc etc. The point is that there is a narrative about Thibs not using data and being an old-school defensive-minded coach that simply isn’t accurate. He obviously watches lots of film and pores over lots of data and sets up plans designed to maximize the skills of the players he has. If he doesn’t trust the data, it’s probably because it’s a small sample – it isn’t some old guy who refuses to learn new tricks. No doubt he misses some possibilities because of it, but it isn’t because he’s inflexible and needs to be forced “to evolve by taking away his comfort space and limiting his options.”
Orlando is a possibility for most surprising team in a positive way. I agree about Milwaukee possibly being most disappointing, except I don’t really think it’s surprising if they do badly, so I’m not sure if they qualify.
You responded to my argument by creating and debunking a straw man.
My criticism of Thibs was very specific and extremely mild. No one is perfect. If we talk about something he doesn’t do well it doesn’t always have to turn into a referendum on whether or not he’s good.

This makes it sound like we got rid of them but Skapintev was signed by Boston to an exhibit 10 deal which is a real minimum salary NBA contract that might turn into a two way deal. Both possibilities are much better than a normal G league contract. I thought Skapintsev looked good in Summer league. I guess the Celtics did too. More evidence for what I’ve been saying about the league valuing centers more than it used too.
It seems the Magic had Brown on their summer league team and liked him.
I’m actually surprised we let Skap go, but at least they got some guys back: Joe Weiskamp, Vit Krejci, Brandon Williams, and Brandon Slater. Weiskamp in particular was a guy I liked at the time of his draft… maybe he can make a stride or two at WC (the shooting has to come around, though).

The Spurs have a 20 win floor and a 65 win ceiling going into this season. Things have to break right for them, but it feels like their 35.5 over/under is maybe gonna look silly in hindsight.
Can someone give a link explaining the Skapintsev deal. All I can find is this and it makes it look like he was signed as a free agent, which I would think Boston could do since someone in G league is available to other teams if they are willing to sign him to a real NBA contract. There no mention of any players coming back to the Knicks. And I know the quoted stats aren’t very good, but he did pretty well in summer league.

The only thing I worry about with the Spurs is Wemby getting injured. He’s incredible, but guys his size just seem to end up injured. I hope it never happens though.
