When Amazon bought it and dropped a ton of money on it I thought the show fell off for me but as an avid Wing Commander player space opera princess who still has nightmares about the pit monster in Enemy Mine that first season was fucking rocketfuel.

Thanks Clarence and DeMar. I loved the 3 Body Problem book, and the other two in the trilogy. Less so the series, although I did watch it.
Any other Sci-Fi recommendations? Either book or movie or series, it’s my favorite genre. The Martian is also very good, and Ready Player One. I also loved Altered Carbon, the book, but not the sequels.
Darules, to bring it back to the start of the thread, I think if you’re into 3 Body Problem — which was way too “hard sci-fi” for me, with no characterization to speak of — then you’d probably really be into The Expanse, which is on Amazon Prime.
Also, if you like The Martian, you might enjoy some of the sci-fi novels of John Scalzi, who has a similar tone to Andy Weir. Maybe start with Old Man’s War? His most famous book is Redshirts, which is very meta, about crewmembers on a starship who realize they keep dying while the bridge crew gets through missions just fine.
Alan, I watched all the Expanse series, considering watching it again. I didn’t like Old Man’s War, but you’re the 2nd recommendation for Redshirts over the other Scalzi books, maybe I’ll get it. Thanks 🙂

I’m going to check Rita, thanks. I love scandinavian shows, and yeah, we’re used to subtitles here. Although in english i don’t need it, i always have it on in case i miss something. I don’t remember all the shows, but The Bridge (Bron/Broen in their language, as it’s a danish and swedish partnership) in the original form is great. Never seen Sofia Helin in another show, but on The Bridge she is outstanding.

Since we’re wandering off-topic today, I’ll just say how miffed I am that Lady Raven pointed out last night that “long tall drink of water” is actually partly stating that you find someone attractive, not just long and tall — which is incredibly obvious but something I never grokked to in all my years. So now she’s peeved that I keep commenting that the Olympic swimmers, both men and women, are attractive to me, despite my knowing that I’m not using it correctly, just because I’m so annoyed that I was so stupid that I have become stubborn and passive aggressive about it. Plus it kind of makes me laugh.

3 Body Problem is one of my favorite trilogies. Netflix doesn’t live up to the books but it’s okay.
I watched some of Baby Reindeer with my girlfriend, but I couldn’t really get into it. I love dark comedy and cringe, but I just couldn’t sympathize with the main character’s plight–he acts in an incomprehensibly stupid way throughout the show. I realize that this is something that actually happened to Richard Gadd, but if it really happened this way I just find him to be a mostly uninteresting and oafish person. It’s not bad, however. I just don’t get how it has received so much acclaim.
I’ve been enjoying Ripley, it’s perfectly enjoyable middlebrow thriller stuff. And the cinematography and casting are terrific!
The Last of Us is alright, but I find the game’s version of the story to be better told–I think the show loses a lot in the corners it cuts/its lacking the environmental storytelling of the video game. The marvelous episode 3 of the show is excepted.
Otherwise, I’ve been watching the X-Files for the first time. Thinking about watching one of Poker Face, Irma Vep, or The Kingdom next. Or starting a Mad Men rewatch.
On a basketball note, looks like the game between Spain and Canada went down to the wire, with RJ nailing a key 3 down the stretch. I didn’t see it on TV here, Max, did you watch it?
For sci-fi books I highly recommend Adrian Tchaikovsky’s Children of Time trilogy. It’s not a true trilogy just three books that tell different stories about the world he created but you would definitely want to read them in order. Children of Time is the first (and best) in the series and each book tells its own self-contained story so you don’t need to read any of the others, or wait for another book that may never come, for a satisfying conclusion.
I haven’t read the Ancillary Justice series but I know it got a lot of hype when it was released and was recommended for fans of The Three Body Problem.
If you saw and like the movie Arrival I would highly recommend the Ted Chiang’s short story collection Stories of Your Life that contains the story the movie was based on. I’d also recommend his followup colleciton, Exhalation.

The Eminently, the way he responds to Martha, his abuser in Reindeer is why this series is so powerful and disturbing. He is actually seeking his abuse and encouraging it, while being semi-conscious to what he is doing to himself and still cannot set himself free, in part because he’s telling himself and maybe truly doesn’t want to hurt her. It’s his tragedy, and it sometimes happen to abuse victims. Heartbreaking.

I’m almost all the way through Clipped on Hulu. It’s a dramatization of the Donald Sterling saga, and it’s pretty solid. No one in the cast looks anything like the person they’re playing, so much so that I think there’s a kind of kitschy quality to it that works.
Also, the actor who played De’Angelo Barksdale on The Wire (Larry Gilliard Jr.) plays Doc Rivers’ father! There’s, like, a 50+ year age difference in the two characters. Perfectly fine job, but that threw me for a loop.
I really wish someone would pick Pirates of Darkwater up and finish it. What a fantastic journey lost in tv shenanigans.

ALTHOUGH – holy shit, except for names and places – very very different story…
after watching the two seasons and being a little perplexed about the story being told, i pulled out the 6 Foundation titles i had…gonna re-read some of it – cause i’m pretty certain things are waaay different from the book series and tv series…
having said that – still very enjoyable…besides for the Foundation series i also had a chance to check out the Robot series (The Caves of Steel, The Naked Sun, I Robot)…
so funny how quaint the 3 Laws of Robotics seem these days…Isaac Asimov was an insanely prolific writer…within the same Foundation/Robot universe he also wrote a Foundation pre-cursor series: The Galactic Empire…
it contains hands down, my favorite book titles ever: The Stars, Like Dust…Pebble in the Sky…and, The Currents of Space…

Yeah, I recognize that his pathological behavior was caused by his history of abuse, but it simply didn’t ring true to me. For example, I have a history of abuse, but I couldn’t “see” any of myself in it—it wasn’t legible to me. While every case of abuse is different, I just couldn’t sympathize. And, because I found the other parts of the show—the writing, the cinematography, etc.— to be just fine, I was left mostly unmoved by it. It’s certainly better than your average Netflix slop but it never screamed “best show of the year” to me.

Given the rich breadth of knowledge here, there’s this sci/fantasy book I read a while back about a planet where a matriarchal bear like species rose to supremacy and eventually take to space. It’s like Darkspace or Darkworld or something. The heroine has magical psycho-kinetic powers fueled by dark forces. I loved that book and have googled my ass off but can’t find it.

I’m a little disappointed Valhalla is ending before the Norman conquest of England.
The characterization in Valhalla leaves a lot to be desired but the source material (i.e. the history of that period) is so rich that I could easily watch two more seasons of it.

immersion is the key…i really enjoyed the movie, it is a very modern comic book movie though…
i’ve read some of the comic stories from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s…i read and collected a bunch from ’95 to ’05…i remember stopping with the continuity storylines of the main marvel characters by ’07 or so…
prior to ’07 or so the covers of comics would hint at violence…like sex, it would very sparsely appear within the book itself…
i remember peeking in on the Old Man Logan books, it was pretty gruesome stuff…
stuff changes, that’s just what happens…real fun movie though…love doing late shows with the kids…got a bunch of cool house shoes, the boys have onesies, i got one coming soon – it’s scully, ordered these cool paw things for my feet to go with it…
figure if i’m gonna spend so much time hanging with the kids, might as well have fun too…did a water slide the other day…yeah, sometimes it’s okay to leave the house…
i have the Onslaught comics where the main villain in the movies originates from…it was definitely a confusing/not so great storyline back then…they portrayed the character well in the movie…
