I would rather let OG rest now and then if it means he’s fully good to go for playoffs. And it sounds like this is normal.

Well I don’t like this at all. Is this normal management or is our season over? You never know!!

Winning the first two games of the trip hopefully gives the team some leeway to rest him

Problem is it means most likely losing last 2 games of the trip and dropping to 5th while making it that much more unlikely getting to 3rd.

Problem is it means most likely losing last 2 games of the trip and dropping to 5th while making it that much more unlikely getting to 3rd.

I don’t think we should worry about seeding except for just staying out of the play in.

After Golden State and Denver we have like 4 super winnable games in a row. I’m fine with them losing the next 2.

They can win without OG too. It’s definitely harder but doable.

I do hope it’s a planned day off. The Knicks generally don’t release information this early, so my level of concern has increased a bit.

I agree it doesn’t matter being 4th thru 6th although the opportunity to move up to 3rd would be ideal. Heck being 6th might be preferable to 5th or even 4th. But still I’d prefer homecourt in the 1st rd even though it isn’t necessary to beat Orlando or Cleveland.

hard not to be a little concerned. everyone who has seen grey’s anatomy keeps swearing all the post-op discomfort is just fantastically normal but i keep watching this expressionless robocop guy wince every time he straightens his arm like he’s james caan in misery.

I do hope it’s a planned day off. The Knicks generally don’t release information this early, so my level of concern has increased a bit.

It’s not a “planned” day off, but not unexpected after arthroscopic surgery on a joint. OG has his own group looking out for his “contract year” so he isn’t going to agree to anything his medical team deems unwise, and the Knicks are looking to invest 150-250 million long term in this guy, so one can assume that both sides are balancing near term results and long term success. They believe this is the best path to assure he can perform in this years playoffs and into the distant future.

I don’t think I’d want to be in a foxhole with some of you fellas….

Whenever there’s an injury announcement like this for a west coast game I always tell myself I’ll just get a good night’s sleep and hope to be pleasantly surprised in the morning, but it’s an empty threat. I’ll be rooting for the fake comeback at midnight.

everyone who has seen grey’s anatomy keeps swearing all the post-op discomfort is just fantastically normal

I’d trust the opinions of guys who not only read Gery’s Anatomy, but did 4 years of medical school, a minimum five year residency as well as likely Fellowships. Most have seen 100’s to 1,000’s of similar cases and have some perspective on the subject matter.

One can chose to believe whom they may, but I prefer the opinions of practicing orthopedic surgeons to a bunch of advocates of Dolan’s razor with St. Vitus Dance.

OG’s elbow may fall of a week from next coming Saturday, but between now and then I’m sleeping well.

After this game, the Knicks have two days off for the last time this season. I imagine he might be taking tonight off to get four days of rest. Something he won’t be able to do for the rest of the season without missing two games. If he misses the Denver games as well I’ll start to worry. But missing one game to rest after coming back from surgery seems reasonable.

I just hope we don’t rest him tonight and then play him in the automatic loss we have coming up in Denver.

I just hope we don’t rest him tonight and then play him in the automatic loss we have coming up in Denver.

This, in an ideal world. If there ever was a game that OG, Brunson the Harts and anyone else with a nick should sit it is vs. Denver. If OG needs to sit tonight due to post surgical inflammation, so be it. If that is the case , playing him vs Denver and not giving him additional rest, with very little possible reward would be illogical.

Crushing the Nuggets in the garden might have been our best game of the season, I think it was the last game before Randle got hurt.

and then play him in the automatic loss we have coming up in Denver

What kind of bullshit loser’s mentality is this?

The Nuggets are not some unbeatable juggernaut.

Randle got hurt the game after when they crushed the Heat. Also was OG’s last game before surgery although nobody realized it at the time.

The Nuggets are not some unbeatable juggernaut.

They are when you are playing without your starting 4, your starting 5, your back up 5 is on a minutes restriction and your starting 3 is playing with a surgically repaired elbow that is barking for some maintenance. They are not technically unbeatable, but the risk/reward ratio of playing knicked up players in that circumstance seems sub-optimal.

It’s a bad sign that he needs “injury management” but the response is better than I was expecting. At least they are trying to manage the injury. I was expecting Thibs to play him 40+ minutes and enter him into an arm wrestling contest after the game.

We’ve beaten Denver the last 3 times we played them

None of those games were in Denver with Jokic playing.

We beat them by 38 last time and Jericho Sims started. It’s a winnable game.

Denver seems susceptible to the left handed hook shot going across the lane. Because of trades and injuries we are short on lefties but Brunson can do it and OG could try and not have to worry about his elbow.

Sex is cool but have you ever tried to start an online argument bc someone said “guaranteed loss” instead of “probable defeat”?

    – Swifty & EB

this warriors game tonight is gonna be tough, like the kings, they’ve been playing well lately…

no doubt them currently slotted for the play-in games has them playing with a sense of desperation…

their young guys have been kicking in a bunch…jackson-davis has been playing great for them lately…

I think the game tonight is pretty important. 5 out of the next 6 games are games we should win. Tonight is the hardest of the 5 easy games. If we win then 45-28 is very possible going into the OKC game. People keep talking about us falling out of 4th. I think we have a real shot at 3rd. Our schedule is easier than Cleveland’s. We have 8 games against tanking teams and Chicago (who is bad like a tanking team), Cleveland has 5.

Plus Cleveland is playing bad and we are getting healthier.

Maybe this is the game where Brunson, Bojan, and Burks get a Killer B’s thing going….

warriors are favored by 6.5 tonight, and there are some indications there’s a chance we’ll get run out of the gym tonight – I am though very much looking forward to watching jalen and cp3 match up against each other during the game…

I’ve never thought of cp3 as a great floor leader, he is a great point guard though…him and jalen competing against each other should be interesting…

and then play him in the automatic loss we have coming up in Denver

AUTOMATIC LOSS – YOUR EXACT WORDS.

I’m not arguing with you. I’m simply pointing out the loser’s mentality you have about that game. There’s no argument to be had. You called it an automatic loss. I’m calling you out on that loser’s mentality.

I’m sorry, yet still somewhat duty-bound, to report that the words and opinions and hopes and dreams of a few Knickerblogger posters are not an actual life or action force within the universe and cosmos.

Problem Ben is don’t overlook Orlando. I don’t think they’re actually that good, they’re expected record is 38-30 compared to the Knicks 42-25 but they’re right there in the standings and just started an 8 game homestand. Plus they own the tiebreaker vs the Knicks.

I’m just sad that we now have an automatic loss tonight as well as an automatic loss against Denver next game. This would have been our chance to make a play for the 3 seed, which greatly improves our playoff equity.

This setback for OG is also a strong indicator that we probably shouldn’t expect full availability for the playoffs.

I guess we should have expected this — now that we do have a good team Dolan’s Razor all but requires that we’ll never be healthy enough to see how far it can go.

I’m not arguing with you. I’m simply pointing out the loser’s mentality you have about that game.

that’s so funny, like a public service announcement…the action i am taking, while seemingly hostile – is actually for your benefit…

reminds me of the whole: i’m from the government, and i am here to help you…yeah, okay sure, right…no one believes that…

or maybe like in Mars Attacks when the martians were running around zapping folks with their rays guns – while telling people not to worry, nothing was wrong…

This setback for OG is also a strong indicator that we probably shouldn’t expect full availability for the playoffs.

Assuming we avoid the play-in, the reg season ends 4/14 then we have 6 days off til the playoffs begin 4/20. This is why judicious management is necessary now. 33 days from now OG’s elbow should be in a much better place than it is today, especially with 6 days off prior to game one.

Of course, no one knows with metaphysical certitude 🙂

BBA – You are right. There is a possibility that we play well, pass Cleveland, and then Orlando still passes both of us.

I think our schedule is about as easy as Orlando’s so I want to have faith we will outperform them but they are basically tied with us right now. It’s going to be a race.

A 4-5 matchup against Orlando doesn’t sound too bad though even if we are the 5. I think we can take them in a series. Them jumping both of us though and us facing Cleveland in a 4-5 would be about the worst possible outcome. Missing out on an easy 1st round match-up and then still facing Boston in the 2nd round is the nightmare.

I’m pretty confident that a Knicks 1st rd series vs Orlando would be as easy as Cleveland was last year.

I’m very curious to see who finishes 6th between Indiana and Miami.

Famous last words, but Orlando’s shooting problems should make them an easy out for almost any of the East’s top teams, including us if we’re at reasonable health.

My hope is that they are attempting to take it as easy as possible on OG so he can go Full OG in the playoffs. My fear is that OG and/or Randle won’t be 100 percent until next season, and their respective injuries will take away some of the greatest strengths (Randle’s ability to shoulder his way past defenders, OG’s shooting from the corner). Both can still contribute in other ways even a bit hobbled (OG especially, as a defender), but it’s far from ideal if we want to have a serious playoff run.

    @FredKatz
Jalen Brunson has been named Eastern Conference player of the week

Last time a Knick was named player of the week at least three times in a season was Melo in 2012-13. (He got it four times.)

Just a PSA that our Little General is now at 5.4 BPM for the season.

That is 2nd all time for our franchise, exceeded only by:
    5.5 BPM Patrick Ewing, 1989-90
    END OF LIST

Feels weird to be saying this, and the bar for this is lower for us than most other NBA teams, but there is a reasonable possibility that this guy may end up as the greatest player in the history of our franchise.

Pagliacci, I love Brunson with all my heart, and think he’s obviously the best player we’ve had since Ewing. But he’d have to be the best player on at least one title team before I’d think of elevating him above Clyde. Or, at least, he’d have to continue to put up these kinds of stats over many years.

There’s no BPM data for Clyde’s prime years, I think because steals and blocks weren’t tracked until ’73, but Clyde almost definitely would have the franchise record if there was.

I have no idea what to think about OG. The team is playing it cool, but he seemed to be writhing in pain the last few games. Whatever it takes to get him right for the playoffs is fine by me.

Of course Alan, nobody’s saying he’s there now, but if he was going to be, this is what his first couple of years here could plausibly look like.

Right now I think he’s already done as much or more for our franchise than Melo. The comparison to Clyde is tough because Clyde’s narrative is in a league of its own, the guy has been beloved on and off court for 50+ years. BPM was only tracked from ’74 on, right when his prime ended — likely his best years would be above even Ewing’s apex mark of 5.5.

To play devil’s advocate on Clyde though:
-Played in the weakest era, a whole other league existed and had many of the best players
    -Never a serious MVP candidate
-Counting numbers inflated by crazy minutes they played back then.
-Rate numbers are very good but not overpowering, 19/6/7 per36 in his best year.
-Title teams were in the mold of the Pistons title teams, a well balanced team of great players rather than a superstar carry job like the Rockets.

Obviously Clyde was worlds better on defense. Do I think Brunson will ever surpass Clyde? Likely not, but it’s pretty amazing that he’s the closest any guard has come in the last 50 years.

IMO it’s better than even money Knicks management, OG’s management, OG himself or the team doctors are trying to protect OG from Thibs.

First off, if he wasn’t on a minutes restriction off the injury I’d be shocked because he should have been. It also wouldn’t shock me if Thibs played him more minutes than he was supposed to play him.

Thibs is mentally incapable of accepting things like minutes restrictions, rest games, injury management etc..

Do we need more evidence than what he did to Mitch and Grimes when they got hurt?

If we do, as soon as RJ went to Toronto they started giving him games off for his knee even though he had that same knee issue in NY and Thibs would run him into the ground for an extra win.

I’m telling you, it’s fairly likely that Thibs is on the spectrum. Some of the same obsessive qualities that make him a great coach also make him incapable of adjusting his patterns of behavior and accepting some common sense things that the rest of us readily understand. I know this behavior very well from dealing with my brother.

That is 2nd all time for our franchise, exceeded only by:
    5.5 BPM Patrick Ewing, 1989-90
    END OF LIST

This stat is a little meaningless since they didn’t keep BMP as a stat during the majority of our franchise’s two best players Willis Reed and Clyde. Brunson has been terrific for two seasons and appears to still be on an upward trajectory, but he has light years to go to match the greatness of Willis and Clyde. Willis was MVP during prime Wilt, Jabbar, West and Oscar.

Pags, assuming Brunson makes an All-NBA team, he’d be the first Knicks guard to do it since Clyde. That’s how barren our backcourt situation has been for most of my lifetime. Even the good guards we’ve had have never been close to tops in the league.

Speaking of superlatives, I’m wondering if anyone on the team will be contention for anything beyond Brunson presumably making All-NBA. Julius and OG have missed too many games for All-NBA and All-Defense, respectively. (Ditto Mitch.) But with All-Defense also being position-less this year, is there a chance iHart makes second team? I haven’t run the numbers or anything.

IMO it’s better than even money Knicks management, OG’s management, OG himself or the team doctors are trying to protect OG from Thibs.

What does this even mean? These are professional athletes who have their own management team. The team’s management hires all sorts of medical people to get the best opinions as to the relative health of each player and whether they are available on a certain evening.

Do you have any evidence Thibs disregards the plan set forth by the medical people and team management? If he does this with any regularity, he should be fired and the players would be in complete agreement. But you have no evidence of that…. just your opinion, which is fine. As a matter of fact I Hart was bitching he didn’t get played enough his first game back.

First off, if he wasn’t on a minutes restriction off the injury I’d be shocked because he should have been. It also wouldn’t shock me if Thibs played him more minutes than he was supposed to play him.

Of course it wouldn’t shock you because you have an already established position. OG had an elbow injury meaning 10 days after the surgery when the sutures are removed, he can go right back on the bike if not straight out running to keep his cardio up. Minutes on the floor was more likely to be a function of what his elbow could tolerate from a soreness perspective. I’m sure the medical staff along with OG’s management had set parameters for how and how much he should play. Your speculation is because Thibs is a proven maniac, he completely disregarded this, and OG is an imbicile, because with 200 million riding on this process he stupidly went along with it. Doesn’t make any sense to me.

Thibs is mentally incapable of accepting things like minutes restrictions, rest games, injury management etc..

Thibs handling of I Hart argues quite elegantly against you. Much to I Hart’s chagrin.

Do we need more evidence than what he did to Mitch and Grimes when they got hurt?

Again, what are you referring to? He certainly never overplayed Mitch minutes-wise. Did he put him back into the last game he played this season? THAT IS THE MEDICAL TEAM’S CALL.

Even the good guards we’ve had have never been close to tops in the league.

Suspect there is one person who would insist that is not factorial.

Marbury did have a pretty underrated excellent 1st full season as a Knick in 2004-05.

Pags, had to send that line to Lady Raven. Well done.

From banned as Dogrufus to being quoted to KBers’ significant others as Pagliacci… I feel like Latrell Sprewell!

You don’t have to tell me twice about our historical dearth of talent!

While I think iHart does have a pretty good case for All-D as #1 in the league in defensive EPM, I sure don’t want him to win it — we’ll be hard pressed enough to retain him as it is!

I think our schedule is about as easy as Orlando’s

Keep in mind, though, our schedule is very congested. We finish the year with these 8 games in just 12 nights, including two sets of B2Bs:

    at Miami
    Sacramento*
    at Chicago*
    at Milwaukee
    at Chicago
    at Boston*
    Brooklyn*
    Chicago

    (* denotes b2b

That’s a really tough run with just four days’ rest.

Donte for most improved? Maybe he can start another hot streak and get consideration, although I doubt he wins.

Hartenstein is averaging only 24.9mpg, which I’d think limits his chances to win any accolades despite playing fantastic defense since the new year began

iHart might have some sort of argument but he’s a really low profile player, I would be pretty surprised.

Woj just said on ESPN that OG is expected to miss more than just tonight’s game.

But I was told that all of the doctors were on it and he was fine, there was no reason for concern whatsoever.

Absolutely shocked the Knicks are being weird about an injury! Man this fucking sucks.

I don’t know who you want to blame this on, the doctors, Thibs or both, but our injuries have been mismanaged as badly as is humanly possible.

    1. The game Mitch got hurt in they brought him back in the 2nd half

    2. The game Grimes got hurt in they brought him back in the 2nd half & he still has those same knee issues

    3. They played RJ through knee issues that Toronto is being forced to manage now.

    4. They brought I-Hart back too soon more than once and he’s still battling Achilles issues

    5. They brought OG back & continued playing him even after it was so obvious he was in a lot of pain at times a fucking dead man could see he should be taken out.

These guys are brain damage level stupid. They should all be fired.

We are working with incomplete knowledge on Randle and Mitch, but it has to be even money they are going to fuck those guys up too.

I don’t believe it’s the doctors. I think Thibs creates an environment where these guys feel pressured to play through injuries and push themselves. I was a supporter when he got hired and have generally been a supporter since he’s been here. If this is all on him, IMO he should be FIRED at the end of the season no matter what we do. IMO he’s not fit to be a head coach.

OG could not bend his arm or hit the rim from the corners and we were supposed to believe it was just regular soreness?

that he still played-and played really well-in the game he first aggravated it and couldn’t bend his arm was insane.

Welcome to Dolan’s Razor, Brunson Peroneus.

Ten years from now some fresh faced kid will not want to be in your foxhole, either.

I’m confident that whoever made the call that he was good to go is way more qualified to have an opinion than I am, but I’ve been watching a lot of sports for a lot of years and I’m not sure I ever recall a supposedly healthy player being regularly in the degree of obvious, visible discomfort we were seeing from OG. It didn’t pass the smell test.

MIght be he just needs another 10 days or something but it’s discouraging and you know the team isn’t going to be forthcoming about it so it’s hard to not think the worst.

I am not sure where anything you described above has anything to do with the coach. That is my only point. Your criticism is of the medical/training staff.

But I was told that all of the doctors were on it and he was fine, there was no reason for concern whatsoever.

This is how it begins, Brunson Peroneus. Ten years from now some fresh faced kid will not want to be in your foxhole.

oh, you sweet summer child BPL 😛

be honest, this is the real reason you signed up – just to have strangers tell ya your crazy…

    hahahahahahahahahahahahaha…this too funny…

it almost makes up for OG’s elbow getting ready to fall off…

truth and facts are all waaaaay overrated when it comes to basic social discourse…such is the lesson for today…

Welcome to Dolan’s Razor, Brunson Peroneus.

Ten years from now some fresh faced kid will not want to be in your foxhole, either.

I’m pretty sure you are the fellow who wrote earlier today something like if they give him today off for recovery, they would be incredibly stupid to play him Thursday against Denver. Weren’t you that guy?

Well…. if they follow your suggestion and you think that is logical (giving OG more than one day off), how can you be surprised when they say the rest won’t only be for one game?

I don’t know about 10 years from now but today, the one thing you wouldn’t have to worry about being in a foxhole with me is standing in a puddle of urine, because I’ve been in more than a few tight spots and I haven’t wet myself yet. 10 years from now, Depends might be in play.

This is actually worse than if he was out for season from the get-go. At least we could have all checked out until November. Instead, we’ve been twisting in the wind and hoping against hope.

My left nut says he never comes back healthy even for the playoffs, which will be extremely short for us now that we’ll be without him for the home stretch.

THAT is Dolan’s Razor. It’s not just that it cuts you, it’s that it find the webbing between your fingers, or the part of your ear that attaches to your head, or the spot on your finger where your thumbnail rests when you hold a pen. It doesn’t just cut you… it Knicks you.

MIght be he just needs another 10 days or something but it’s discouraging and you know the team isn’t going to be forthcoming about it so it’s hard to not think the worst.

Another 10 days without him puts us in the play-in 100%, and why would we even think that’s the end of it?

As long as Brunson is healthy the Knicks will get to the 2nd rd regardless of OG and Randle’s injury status. Having said that there is no chance in hell they’d beat Boston or Milwaukee in the 2nd rd without OG and Randle.

if anything the OG news just highlights the fact that we really can’t count on julius this season either…

woj took time to mention that after he spoke of OG not playing for awhile…

though for some reason – i feel like mitch will come back to play and be okay…

OG/jules – it’d be a christmas miracle if either is effective for the post season…

the hope is that we can at least hang on to home-court advantage…

The Knicks aren’t losing to Brooklyn, Detroit or Toronto as long as Brunson plays. Those are the other games in the next 10 days after Golden St and Denver.

I don’t know about 10 years from now but today, the one thing you wouldn’t have to worry about being in a foxhole with me is standing in a puddle of urine, because I’ve been in more than a few tight spots and I haven’t wet myself yet. 10 years from now, Depends might be in play.

Spoken like Ajax when he climbed on top of the rock.

The Celtics starting lineup has so much talent that they’re basically just rotating guys out night to night and still winning. Tonight it’s Tatum, last game Porzingis and Brown.

They’re gonna be very fresh come playoff time. Pretty scary.

BBA, we’ve lost to some shitty teams of late with Brunson and no OG, even at home. The idea that we’re a shoo-in to win a playoff series like that is insane, especially considering we are now very likely to be a first round underdog if we even make it that far..

Thibs said OG went home for an MRI but the MRI was clean, so I guess that’s good, or at least not terrible.

Knicks and Yankees are really on a tight fight for worst team at disclosing serious injuries to their players.

I dunno, maybe they figure they rest him for the rest of this road trip then see where he’s at? We won two of the four games already so we’re kind of playing with house money on this road trip.

If we’re going to make any noise at all in the playoffs it’s going to be as scrappy, injury-riddled underdogs, which is… fine. We’re probably just too banged up to really make much of a run though.

I’d at least consider a coaching change after this year. I think load management might benefit this particular team more than the every-game-is-game-seven mentality that Thibs brings to the table.

I don’t know what you want these guys to do. They announce OG is having surgery to clean up some ‘loose bodies’ in his elbow. He has the surgery and has a normal recovery from the surgery. He amps up his workload and he is fine. He looks good to everyone in practices, After a game and a half, he has pain. The doctors look at his elbow and rule him good to go with post operative soreness. He’s worse after that game so they say they are giving him more than one game off. They send him home for another MRI which is ‘clean’ which I assume means no new damage or structural damage. Exactly where have they been nebulous? You can’t tell people things that you don’t know yourself. Not every injury recovery goes by the textbook.

The Gerrit Cole this is similar. He had soreness after throwing a 47 pitch simulated game. They gave him a few days off and his elbow was no better, They sent him for an MRI and got several opinions. No one saw a UCL tear or anything like that. They sent him to LA to have the super specialist look at it. He concurred no structural issue and diagnosed it as an inflamed nerve. 3-4 weeks total rest is the prescription. What did the Yankees do wrong other than not give information they didn’t have to satisfy the crackberry culture?

Have you paid attention to Aaron Judge injury updates in the last…2 years?

Deuce starting for OG. Who said Thibs never changes?

So JB-Deuce-DDV-Hart-I-Hart. I like it, especially against the Warriors. Deuce will stick to Steph all night, I’d think.

MIght be he just needs another 10 days or something but it’s discouraging and you know the team isn’t going to be forthcoming about it so it’s hard to not think the worst.

Where are they not forthcoming? They said he was going to miss tonight’s game with a sore elbow. Then, after they got the MRI results they said he’d miss multiple games. They can’t tell you how many, because they don’t know.

Any of you guys ever been around athlete or managed an athlete that has had “clean up” orthopedic surgery. Those so-called loose bodies got there by some bad process: the overextension of a joint, a fragment of bone being avulsed by a ligament, etc. After you clean up the joint as best as you can, there is always the damage remaining to the articular surfaces. Even visually that it difficult to quantify accurately. Usually if the damage isn’t too severe that improves over time. Each of these cases is individual.
