Alan, I thought the end of True Detective really sucked. Not sure what you saw there that I didn’t see. Thought the whole thing was confusing and rushed. Didn’t get what really happened to Navarro or why she was how she was. Didn’t think it was a particularly great Foster performance either. Nothing close to Season 1 which is the only other that I have watched.
Fair enough. Reasonable minds can differ. The thing that sucks is that my social media replies have been flooded by misogynists who are so offended by the idea that anyone could like this show that they’re accusing me of being bribed by HBO, being mentally ill, and all kinds of other BS. One guy sent me an email to call me a fraud who’s making the country worse, and that no one in my life actually loves me. So a lot of healthy, pleasant bros out there!
Alan, I liked your review and liked the show quite a bit. I really enjoyed the world of the series and the lead performances. I didn’t need everything explained to me and was fine with the unanswered questions. And I thought the Orient Express-inspired (I think?) murder solution was quite elegant.

The difficulty in following the plot watered down the excitement in the climax scenes.

I thought the show’s pacing was awful—it really suffered from being six episodes. I also thought the plot points in the last few episodes were pretty preposterous, with the ending being downright cheesy. This is somewhat related to the first issue, since they probably could’ve built them up better if they had more time. I also don’t think Navarro or Danvers were all that interesting as characters. All in all, I enjoyed the setting but I would not want to watch another season that’s written by Issa Lopez (or Pizzolatto, for that matter.)
Thursday can’t get here fast enough. I’m going through withdrawals.
I humbly recommend Rolling Along, Bill Bradley’s one-man stage show streaming on Max for those suffering withdrawal. He is a remarkable human, and worth watching to get to his Knick years’ portion. Contextualizing the bonds that were formed in the late 1960s on the Knicks. A nice companion to Araton’s When the Garden was Eden. I’ve always been a Dollar Bill fan ( read McPhee’s A Sense of Where You Are in High School) as a man getting the most out of his limited physical gifts and following his own North Star.
Bo, did you ever read Bradley’s “Life on the Run,” which he wrote about his life on the Knicks? It’s been forever, but I remember loving it at the time. And one anecdote in particular has stuck with me: on the team charter, all the other guys are playing cards or otherwise messing around, while Clyde — who at the time wasn’t remotely the wordsmith we know and love today — was sitting quietly off by himself, reading a book about expanding your vocabulary.
I think Brian and Alan should collaborate on a book based on famous Knicks one-and-done cup of coffee-types, like iso-Zo, Ron Burgundy, Maurice Ndour, etc…
I have read 5 books relating to basketball. Life on the Run was by far the best. The other 4 were The Incredible Knicks by Phil Pepe (got for Christmas as a child and pretty much memorised it), Wilt (more entertaining than Life on the Run, but not for a Knicks fan), Charles Barclay I may be Wong but I Doubt It (easy read but completely forgettable) and Simmons The Book of Basketball (informative at the time if you can ignore the obvious Celtic bias). But I remember more from Life on the Run than the other 4 combined.

My first piece of Knicks attire was a Marcus Camby jersey my grandpa got me when I was four, but a close second was a Bill Bradley for President pin my parents affixed to me during the 2000 Democratic primary. They supported his run, so naturally pre-K TNFH did too.
I didn’t find out until years later that he was a former Knick. Had I known that at the time, my five year-old self would’ve at least seen to it that he beat Gore in New York.
I did a book report on “Born to Coach” by Rick Pitino back in 7th grade. I got a B on it, because I glossed over what seemed at the time to be a minor triviality that the guy who was “born to coach” hadn’t yet, you know, accomplished anything.
(In hindsight, if Pitino was truly “born to coach”, he’d have come to recruiting meetings armed with more than just coupons for free food at McDonalds.)
As for Bradley, every time I hear Santana’s Oye Como Va, I still sing “🎶cast your vote for Bill, Bill Bradley🎶” to the tune.

First season of True Detective is Goated. The second season was so bad and comical I couldn’t watch another episode.
I will say this, re TD season 1: I think the first five episodes are INCREDIBLE. Some of the best TV of its type I’ve ever seen. I also think there’s a substantial fall-off after that (once we settle into the middle time period), and most of the finale feels like a cop-out.
(The finale is also one of many spots in that season where Pizzolatto blatantly plagiarized other people’s work. Rust’s speech about the stars against the sky is lifted practically verbatim from an Alan Moore comic book called Top 10.)

@earlybird — I’ve dramatically cut down on marijuana for…. reasons…. and watching this without my usual cinematic amuse-bouche, I can still profess my deep love for High and Low. Every shot is Kurosawa at his best and it is my favorite procedural.
True Detective Season Four. Started out slow, got better with each episode but I gotta say the last episode was a huge letdown for me and I agree it was confusing and not a very satisfying ending. So what, exactly, were the magic/supernatural powers going on in the show? It felt like a big nothing burger to me.
I’d love to watch every good Kurosawa movie but it’s really a lifelong project with how many excellent movies he’s made. I watched a number of the samurai movies a long time ago, plus Rashomon and Ikiru more recently.

I’m in total agreement with this. I think TD season 1 is pretty overrated; it would’ve been way better if it opted for a cosmic horror freak out.
After AS break, usually contending teams and teams jocling for playoff position roll up their sleeves while tanking team do the same in the other direction. February record is 2:5 with 5 games left. Will they finish 4:1 to get back to .500 and salvage the month?
Last 17 games over 31 days, 3/14 – 4/14 – is a tough stretch that will end up determininig seeding. This is when I fully expect a hot streak. That third seed is still very realistic, imo.

it’s puzzling to me, just like there are a million comic book stories for modern day writers to take inspiration from (read: copy) – is it really that difficult to tell a legit intelligent mystery…

I remember thinking Matthew McConaughey must have taken some acting PEDs after watching the first few episodes of season one. He’d been a below replacement-level dramatic actor his whole career (A Time to Kill, haha). Then he one an Oscar a few months later. And then, just like that, he was doing car commercials, and all was right with the world again.
As for season 4, as somebody who moved to California to escape seasonal depression disorder, I found the first episode a bit hard to watch. Needless to say, didn’t watch any more.

I tried that last year and it was cloudy every single day from April to June. I used to drive 4 hours every weekend just to see the sun. It was usually on the other side of a mountain range. If I was lucky, I could find it in West Lake/Calabasas but often I had to go all the way to Joshua Tree.
The worst part, Donnie, was not the clouds. It was the lies. The forecast always said sunny while it was cloudy. Then these stupid California people would tell me “well that’s because it’s not actually cloudy it’s called the marine layer and it forms when condensation rises from the ocean and gets stuck in the atmosphere.” And I’d be like “that’s what a cloud is!”
At least I got to meet JK47 and hang out with Geo. I feel like the key to living in California is having a strong group of East Coast expats so you don’t have to fraternize with the locals too much.
