Besides his recent awful shooting, I worry that KP is just not that smart a basketball player. This is most evident when he grabs the occasional offensive rebound, and then ends up putting up fall away putbacks, or last night, a ridiculous fall away jump hook. He also never seems to use head fakes, which results in way less free throws than a guy with his usage should be getting.

I hope that his basketball intelligence can improve (and his shooting of course) but right now he just keeps doing dumb shit (including fouls) that drives me crazy.

if you try to extract some nuance into where and how KP is a smart/dumb player so far, there are a few layers. on offense, there are three biggies, i think. one is the game is not slow for him like it is for some intuitively great passers/anticipators. this seems obvious just from watching. a second his that he is truly unusually weak, and it leads to him instinctively avoiding a lot of things that seem smart, like going stronger to the rim on put-backs or rolling harder on the PNR. the last factor combines with that: although he has great fine motor skills and “athleticism” for his size, he does not have good hands or body control. he can’t make quick up and under moves or wrist-flick passes like towns or jokic without a severe risk of getting stripped or throwing it away. i am not saying he shouldn’t be doing more of these things, but that right now and probably to some extent forever they would be less successful than they are for many other players. and he surely senses this viscerally as opposed to just being ignorant or obtuse. you can even see him struggling with the choice between flopping vs getting lightly bumped and just missing the shot.

on defense, you can see many areas where kp has gotten smarter. he is still hampered by his stamina, strength and high center of gravity, yet he has really become a more effective defensive player. people were on here applauding DJ yesterday but if you’ve watched basketball this year you know that KP has not just been a better defender this year than DJ. It is more like the difference between excellent and not good. He makes very few of the mental mistakes DJ makes when his shitty defensive guards allow penetration.

his main “smarts” problem as everyone has pointed out ad nauseam is less the stuff he isn’t doing and more that he is doing too much stupid shit trying live up to his name. that is some combination of KP, coaching and PG talent, but i guess mostly KP.

@2, + everything you said in your first paragraph. KP actually missed a point blank layup and almost fell down when Tyus Jones breathed on him. And yes, you can really see the difference in hand speed/strength between him and Towns.

Burke will at least chuck 3’s.

If you are Ramon Sessions, at least you won’t have to watch this shit anymore.

I’m not as anti-Lance as most people who, you know, understand bball better than me are. but, what does he do that warranted 29 minutes on the floor last night? that’s insane.

Porzingis is a few bicep curls away from being elite. And by elite, I mean all-time elite. I’m talking Dominique plus Joe Johnson plus Antoine Walker plus Robert Horry elite.

They need to find some players who can space the floor (because you know that he’s got like 2x earth’s gravity working against him), who can make the cuts (you know he doesn’t pass because there’s literally not a single NBA player on the floor to pass to), who can stop him from having to be the box-out champion (because that’s why he has low rebound numbers, not because he’s basically Andrea Bargnani with a better nose for blocks).

Imagine if he actually had an NBA player on the roster to play next to! I think we should trade for Andrew Wiggins and/or Devin Booker so they can synergize and gravity each other into the astral realm. Basically we need to find our Matthew-McConaughey-in-Interstellar to solve the problem of gravity for our lean, mean superstar.

@7 well then, let’s send hm some dumb bells complete with instructions, pronto.

It would also help Porzingis develop if they had a halfway competent experienced point guard to facilitate the offense.

I think he’ll be fine, it’s a work in progress now

    @6
Last night I guessed that Hornacek wanted Lance to shadow Jimmy Butler as much as possible. Butler was held to just 13 points, IIRC, but Lance scored 0. So, they ended up -13 on that matchup and lost.

McD played only 5 minutes. Unless he was sick or hurt in some way, that is ridiculous.

So, yeah, Jack and LT play lots of minutes, yet they continue to lose. Jack really thrives at padding his scoring stats in 4th quarter garbage time. If he continues to get 30+ minutes per game, what’s the point in adding Burke?

Adding Burke could also mean that the Knicks are about to put Lee on the block, so all those teams interested in him that strat talks about can start the bidding.

It’s certainly reassuring to learn that KP’s career arc will progress in much the same way as an episode of a Popeye cartoon.

bicep muscles are the most functional muscles, and you obviously don’t have bicep muscles if you disagree

Trae going for quintuple double on espnu. The regular 3 plus he has 8 turnovers and 9 3’s.

I think it is funny how people are so down on KP when he was far and away the best defensive player on the floor last night. Offensively KP is a bit of a mess right now, it’ll probably get better when he gets stronger and has a better system but even if he maxes out as Melo offensively his defense is elite, up there with the best big men in the league and that alone makes him extremely good.

Plus if it ever all comes together offensively which I think it will in a season or two when he gets stronger then we’re talking about a top 5-10 player.

As for his rebounding it is really a non-issue. We have been a good rebounding team every year he’s been in the league and better with him on the floor than off. So while I understand people want him to put up gaudy numbers we have out rebounded our opponents all three years he’s been in the league and he’s been the only consistent starter year to year.

Trade everyone and play Trey Burke 40 minutes per game if it inreases our chances of getting Trae Young by 1%.

KP’ physical condition has been in question for years now. His anemia could still be a problem. He could also still be growing, which could explain his fatigue and inconsistent physical demeanor. Boomer Esiason on his morning show has recommended a feeder bag for KP. This helped Boomer’s son, who has cystic fibrosis, to gain enough weight and become strong enough to withstand the treatment he needed.
No matter what the issue, the NYKs would do well to be proactive about developing a plan to improve KP’s onditioning. He’s only their most valuable asset.
Oh, and, yeah, and get him a good big man’s coach.

I wonder if KP gets enough sleep. I was reading how Steve Clifford had to take time off from coaching fix medical problems, and part of the cure involved learning how to get enough sleep. You can’t stay fit and build muscle if you don’t get enough sleep. Many NBA players have been known to take game day naps, but KP seems the sort who would go into the gym instead.

bicep muscles are the most functional muscles, and you obviously don’t have bicep muscles if you disagree

even so never ever stop flexing the mirror doesn’t care

Good job by melo leading okc to a win behind his 7 points on 14 shots.

Trey Burke is an upgrade to Sessions
l also watched the Thunder game, Melo is +3.. must be the 10 rebounds
if KP puts a bit more muscle, he might slow down

Today was the first game in Deandre’s career that he missed because of injury. Absolutely insane.
