I’m really having Knicks game withdrawal. Just have to make it to September 8th – less than a month – but it hurts…
I THINK It was Posting and Toasting that in previous thread news sections had stories on their Mount Rushmores of Knicks positions (e.g., four best point guards, etc.). It was an interesting exercise, but it struck me that with most of the positions (I only saw point, shooting guard, and small forward) there were usually three clear stars at each position, and then one pretty questionable one. Makes me think that the 20-year drought was really a fairly talent-less stretch…

– Jonas Aidoo
Last year, Jonas Aidoo played for the Greensboro Swarm, the Charlotte Hornets’ G League affiliate. He’s 23 years old and listed at 6-foot-11. Signing him to a two-way contract would be useful for center depth.
In Summer League, he proved worthy of that chance. In his four appearances with the Utah Jazz, he averaged 9.0 points, 8.8 rebounds, and 3.3 blocks while shooting 50.0% from the field.
Truly the dog days of summer when all we get is bad baseball and only the most meaningless wishcasting of weekly speculation on Knicks & Rangers roster moves.

This is a common refrain in some quarters. And I get it. Most of it — don’t think the absence of Halliburton & Tatum had any impact on us whatsoever except for changing the teams that we dominated. (I was actually deeply disappointed we didn’t get to play Boston or Indiana on this run.)
But I dont think we were fortunate to win the NBA title. I think we were fortunate to be the most dominant playoff team in NBA history.
It wasn’t like OG led the NBA in TS% while we squeaked by teams. He & Landry could fall back to earth next year and it could just mean we win a competitive ECF instead a complete mauling.
We won with the greatest margin of error of all time. We can afford a droppoff and still repeat.
Watched Supergirl recently. I thought it was a pretty solid movie. Seems like it got a bad rap.
Haven’t seen Spiderman or Odyssey but seems like people love them. I’ve been less thrilled with the Spiderman movies than others, so I haven’t been rushing to see it.
I think it’s a dumb critique in general, Hubie.
Like is there any team that was unfortunate to win an NBA championship? Why is no other champion judged by this standard?
There are certainly teams with more inflated reputations who faced weaker and more depleted opposition to get there, like the 2024 Celtics facing no adversary above 50 wins and having every opposing best player missing games or playing hurt.
They went 16-3 also, but with a weaker MoV against weaker comp. Yet nobody said this kind of shit about them, and the only possible explanation for that gap is, what? Their RS record?
This just proves my theory that instead of the 2026 championship validating the Knicks, the 2026 somehow invalidated championships.
Knicks-wise, just gonna keep beating the drum that what we really need Drummond to do is holdup against Wemby, Embiid, Jokic, and any other star centers come playoff time.
Watching Boston try and defend Embiid with Brown and White in the series finale shows how much of a problem Queta had defending Embiid.
Maybe Drummond is strong enough to stand his ground, but that was the real value of Mitch. Mitch might lose those minutes but he’s not losing them so badly that you need to completely change your defense.
I thought Mitch also did a solid job cutting off Maxey before getting back to Embiid in the PnR. Don’t think Drummond is doing that.
Back to movies. Haven’t seen but heard good things about more indie-type films The Invite, Obsession, and Backrooms.
Anyone have thoughts on those?
I enjoyed Backrooms and really liked the Invite, both are worth a watch imo.
Dreams, part of a trilogy directed by Dag Johan Haugerud is the best film I watched this year. It’s also Norwegian, so as far from a summer blockbuster as you can possibly imagine.
got the last 4 episodes of House of Dragons to enjoy…shoot, still have 3 more episodes of Spider-Noir to watch, ben was having some really weird hallucinations and i may have dipped out on that…
newish movie wise – tried to watch Dust Bunny (hbo/max), wanted to like it, but, maybe not in the right mood, will add liqour and try again…The Long Walk was like a shallow tv episode…will get to MK II at some point…

The Drummond optimism has me slightly bemused. You know what? It’s summer, Drummond is going to be awesome.

The concept of Backrooms was great, and the first two-thirds of it where he just kept discovering how expansive it was down there was great psychological stuff. But as soon as it devolved into eating pieces of a corpse’s stomach and a gigantic pirate chasing folks around in a furniture store trying to kill them, it dived off a cliff so fast that I almost couldn’t have foreseen it coming. (Of course, if I *had* foreseen it coming, I wouldn’t have seen the movie.)

It’s not optimism vis-a-vis Mitch, Owen. I don’t expect Drummond to be a fraction of the player Mitch is. I’m just optimistic he might be decent.
My kid watched Obsession and described it to me since I basically don’t watch movies anymore, and it sounds absolutely terrifying.
Terrifying is great if that is what the movie is attempting to be. I’ve been disappointed by so many films that aimed to be terrifying but weren’t, or funny but weren’t, or well-acted but weren’t.
I just watched some highlights from the Celtics-Sixers series, since Embiid didn’t play in those games and Drummond played quite a bit. If you focus on the plays where the Celts scored, you get a decent look at Drummond’s defensive shortcomings, which are pretty stark.
Think Talos from Jason and the Argonauts.
I enjoyed the Odyssey but I maintain Nolan was not the right director for it. He’s too cold and the dialogue is frankly terrible in places, but the spectacle was a lot of fun.
This is a fair critique, I didn’t love the climax but it did the job more or less. There’s a bit of a dancing bear element to Backrooms where the fact it was made by such a young director maybe makes it more superficially intriguing than it actually is.
Just watched the last 7.5 minutes of Game One against the Cavs, down by 22, they go on a 44-11 run and win by 11.
Just mind-boggling. So much about this playoff run that’s incredible and I’d say unforgettable but each game that followed was so amazing that it often just wiped what was left of my brainpan clean.
Seems like an interesting film. How’s the rest of the trilogy? Do you need to watch all three to get the most outgoing of Dreams? Reading a brief description it sounds like more of a conceptual trilogy than one that shares a storyline
Facts. Go watch that last defensive play of game two in the finals. Mitch shuts down the lane for Fox and then gets back in time to contest Wemby’s midrange and force a brick. Mitch is the best center in the league guarding the PnR play with less than 10 seconds to go.
There were so many close games that were won with a defensive stop last two seasons. They gonna have to figure out how to do this without Mitch now.
Folks, Andre Drummond warmed the bench for a guy named Adem Bona last two seasons and then Philly was super excited to replace him with Huk. Give me break with all this Drummond optimism please….
We are just going to have to disagree. While it might be technically correct to call them the most dominant playoff team ever if you use average margin of victory rather than actual record or performance against the best team in the finals.
To say OG, KAT and Shammet didn’t have bizzarely outlying performances in the playoffs isn’t consistent with the record. OG’s BMP for his career is 0.4 and 2.0 this season. It was 9.4 in the playoffs. KAT’s regular season BMP for his career is 4.3 and this past regular season 3.3. It was 9.4 in the playoffs. For reference, Jokic is the all time regular season leader in career BMP at 10.6 so KAT and OG both played like Jokic’s brother from another mother for 17 games.
I don’t see how more outlier-ish you can get. Does anyone expect both of them to be in the top 4 in MVP voting next year? I don’t even though they are both excellent players.
Plus, their top 5 all had substantially excellent health the entire season.
A repeat is going to be very difficult. OKC was unlucky to have real health issues for a very young team. SAS will be better just because Wemby will be allowed to work out this off season after being shut down completely leading up to this season with DVT and a huge sub clavian clot. He will likely be better conditioned next season and won’t be a wet noodle if he needs to play 40 minutes.
Long winded rant on the Odyssey…
It’s funny bc we were talking about Homer and Virgil here on KB before the movie came out. And I said I’d always been more of an Aeneid guy and wished they’d done a movie about that, but I understood why the Odyssey has more appeal. Charismatic Odysseus is a much more compelling character than boring old Aeneas.
Then I’m watching the Nolan film and thinking, holy shit, Nolan turned Odysseus into Aeneas! And I found it so distracting I couldn’t even enjoy the movie.
Odysseus is curious & clever. He doesn’t just want to get home, he wants to know what’s along the way. That’s partly why it takes him so long.
Aeneas is the burdened one defined by piety & obligation. He’s the one who carries the consequences of Troy around with him. Odysseus is proud of what happened at Troy and carries himself with “I’m that guy energy.” Nolan switched the characters!!
Not only that, much of the movie comes from the Aeneid, not the Odyssey. Sinon, the Trojan Horse, the sack of Troy, “I fear Greeks even when bearing gifts”, all that comes from Virgil. The horse wasn’t something he invented, but presenting the horror of what the Greeks did after it was his story, and Aeneas was the character who forced us to experience it from the perspective of its victims.
Nolan basically gave Odysseus Aeneas’s character and then sent him through Homer’s itinerary. But the itinerary made no sense without Odysseus’ nature! It made absolutely no sense, for example, that Nolan’s Odysseus would want to hear the siren’s song. None whatsoever. Nolan took away every part of Odysseus’ personality that would have made him want to do that.
And you did all this for what? To make the horse the bomb and tell us the same story you told us in Oppenheimer?
I did think the twist on xenophobia was cool and appreciated what Nolan was doing there. But I thought he made a complete mess of the Horse by treating it as a gift whose deception somehow violated Zeus’s law. It was a war! No one in the Bronze Age was expecting Xenia in a war. And the foundational violation of Zeus’ law was in the Trojan side: Paris was welcomed into Menelaus’s home and then runs off with his wife. According to Zeus’ law, which Nolan spent the whole damn movie spouting about, everything that happened to Troy is because they violated Xenia.
I’m not one to suggest an adaptation has to be faithful, but it has to make sense. Nolan’s odyssey was boring, unfaithful, and didn’t even follow its own internal logic. I thought it was terrible film, and I’ve been lonely AF this summer listening to people tell me how great they thought it was.

As for Spider-Man, I don’t see many movies, but I actually saw this one. I thought it was just ok, with a not very compelling plot, but I am a tough customer for movies, so take my opinion with a grain of salt.
Tell me about it, I feel the same way about the Knicks
Part of being unlonely is pretending to enjoy other people’s shitty stupid fun every once in a while.
I’m trying to, Clarence! I kept that Odyssey rant inside for weeks. I’m not trying to be hipster here. Every time someone tells me they loved it I keep my thoughts to myself and genuinely ask what they liked about it while I actively listen to their response hoping to be convinced that I’m overlooking something. I have a 70mm IMAX ticket in September and I’m hoping to have a better experience.
I don’t think this is other people’s “stupid fun,” though, like Ace Ventura or Happy Gilmore (my god, I was so lonely during the Jim Carey & Adam Sandler era…). People are holding this up as some sort of masterpiece.
Things I genuinely liked about the movie: the twist on Circe*, the Laestrygonians, Himesh Patel’s Eurylochus, everything Robert Pattinson did, and the cinematography. That’s about it.
* though I found it odd that he exonerated every female character in the story
I haven’t watched the other two yet, and going to do so soon. Yes, it’s a conceptual trilogy. There’s something about the two Norwegian films and one series I watched recently, that they center directly on feelings and relationships inside a community or family but they’re not indie or provincial. Rather they have something American movies used to have for me, coming from a chaotic country, until a generation ago, a solid, safe world you always want to go back to. A sense of we are the center. I think it’s beautiful.

We weren’t going to lose to the Sixers or Cavs, for instance, if OG only had a 2.0 bpm. We just would have beaten them in 6 or 7 close games instead of completely lopsided sweeps.
We don’t need OG to post a 9.4 bpm to win the title. We need it to go 16-3 with a net rating of 15.5.
But the Pacers almost won a title with a net rating of 2.0. We can manage that with OG and KAT playing like they regularly do..

There’s a price one pays for knowing too much. I actually have a similar problem/different focus, most often with mediocre action/comedy movies, who can’t stop sticking sulphur-crested cockatoos in the Amazon jungle or European green lizards in deepest darkest Africa.
Interesting rant, Hubie. I got 70mm IMAX tix for 8/28 in Chicago and am waiting to see it then. My daughter was a classics major, possibly influenced by my constant interrogation of language at the dinner table (“where do you think THAT word comes from?”), so she won’t see the film at all. My interest was more language than myth, so while I am worried for exactly the reason you say – Odysseus does not look like the crafty trickster from Homer but some grim PTSD vet – I’ll entertain the idea and see what Nolan does with it. But even as a starting point, no, that’s not The Odyssey, a surpassingly strange fantasia about a man so pleased with his cleverness that he often does unclever things.
I thought “Oppenheimer” sucked, so the bar is low – give me visuals worth the 70mm and I’ll be OK. But too bad he wasn’t much interested in the actual source material.
I had fun watching the Odyssey because I expected it to suck way worse than it did. It’s rare that I can walk into a theatre with any kind of forgiveness so I go in like I do when I have to sing karaoke and I do enyas only time with all my heart and soul and hope for the best. It helped that my seat was bucking wildly and I was getting spit on by the bar in front of me during the sea voyages and I was getting kidney punched by dildos when they were sword fighting. Lupita was pretty great. Fucking love her.

Yep, Hubert, 100% aligned here. They made Odysseus a dweeb and that’s not right. But more there was more than enough to make it a fun watch regardless.
Circe in particular is fantastic. Not sure who that actress was but she rocked.
And to be clear, I am not optimistic on Drummond. But it’s August…
