Why is that? Because he’s oddly effective even though it looks like he shouldn’t even be able to move around? A little annoyed that we couldn’t find a way to utilize whatever skillset he *does* have. He falls into the Precious category for me in that regard. (Also need Sochan to show something to help me feel better about it.)

I feel about Jeremy right now about how I feel learning that there is 8 inches of snow forecast after the current blizzard ends.

Resignation tinged with disappointment and some anger.

How are we feeling about The Jeremy Sochan Experience so far?

Precisely as expected. Unplayable in any line up as his non offense gums up the works. Might have some utility in short bursts as a defender. Needs to learn how to shoot a little bit. Jared Jefferies clone. Get him in the shooting lab and pray and stop taking minutes from Diawara.

He isn’t a good enough rebounder and defender like Mitch or Rodman to be a complete zero on offense and still be valuable.

I definitely hate appealing to authority, but, IN GENERAL, if a contender is dumping a 23 year old former lottery pick, there’s TYPICALLY a good reason.

If and when we meet the Pistons in the playoffs, throw Sochan out there for 5 minutes to harass the shit out of Cade.

Just make sure he’s surrounded by 4 other guys who can actually score the basketball.

    2

A lineup with both Sochan and Huk — or even with both Sochan and Mitch — seems unforgivable. Either play him with KAT or play him at center, or don’t play him at all.

On the other hand, if we’ve really gotten KAT going, as opposed to him just playing well in advantageous matchups, maybe we can finally get our overall act together?

A lineup with both Sochan and Huk — or even with both Sochan and Mitch — seems unforgivable.

What’s absolutely strange is that the same Sochan/non KAT center was unplayable versus the Rockets, and Brown seems oblivious to that.

I’m kind of getting tired of Brown experimenting with everything except using the lineups (KAT + 4 shooters) that are obviously effective.

Yeah, I’m all for experimentation in line-ups but in today’s NBA it should be pretty apparent what line-ups are non-starters and there’s no need to try them.

Like if we’re in a situation in the playoffs where Brown’s only option is to play Huk and Sochan together, we’re probably fucked.

Regardless, 2 wins in a row! I will never take a second win on a back to back on the road for granted. I know Chicago was also on a back to back but they were at home and we had to travel. A win is a win.

Nice to see KAT have 2 good games in a row. Hopefully this is the start of something.

It’s called sample size. You guys can’t take a few minutes in one game and determine that works or doesn’t. He has had no training camp and barely any practice with the team. This is a see what you can do on the fly. You have to really see what works and what doesn’t. 5 min in one game tells you nothing.

    1

Wondering if there might be any game postponements because of that storm. We got close to nothing here in Virginia.

The way some of you guys want to do things, a guy like Deuce never would have made the team

I’m with JollyRoger on this one. Sochan has played like ass so far, but it’s only been a few games and as noted he’s not been put out there in the most advantageous of lineups.

I’m not holding out much hope, at least until next year assuming he can fix his shot over the summer, but maybe situationally on D? I’d be happier if his hair didn’t shout “Look at me!” while his game says, “Avert your eyes!” I’d also be happier if his demeanor was more like Shamet’s, who even though he looks like a homeless dude, acts like a businessman with a briefcase waiting for a train, no matter what happens.

    1

I don’t mind giving Sochan minutes here or there to see how strong his defense is and what kind of energy he can bring. However, Diawara is younger, seems to be developing at a good clip within the season and despite his history as a bad shooter is shooting well so far. IMO he should play over Sochan until such time he starts failing to deliver.

I also agree with Alan and said as much when we first traded for him. Expectations seemed to be a little too high. The Spurs dumped because NO ONE wanted him. They couldn’t trade him. That’s telling you what the league and people watching him closely thought.

I’m obviously not against giving him a shot because he’s young, can defend MULTIPLE positions and can make some plays (a profile you know I love). There’s always hope for shot development, but a player like that is not moving the needle unless he improves his shot. That’s what you are hoping for.

The way some of you guys want to do things, a guy like Deuce never would have made the team

    I agree.

Lots of young players DO become better shooters. So if they are plus switchable defenders, can make plays and impact the game in other ways it’s worth the development time to at least try. Not everyone has to be a “scorer” that can give you 20 every night in a variety of ways. There aren’t enough shots in the game to have 5 guys like that on the court. You want role players too. They just have to shoot well enough to be guarded outside.

Also agree with Jolly. He’s played C,PF, and PG. He has guarded 1-5. He’s been injured. He has fallen off a cliff in one season. He is 22. His prior team either dumped him or did him a solid. Talk about an enigma—let Brown experiment as widely as he wants with some serious sample sizes before Fourniering options. Because if there is one that works, even if in unique game situations, valuable come play-offs.

Sochan is a wing with close to zero offensive game and the ability to not get killed on a switch. He’s not really an enigma.

He’s a nice pickup as a flier on a versatile defender who can maybe do enough cutting to the basket to be a better 4 off the bench than we currently have. He can also take McCullar’s spot when they go offense/defense.

According to bbref, Sochan has actually played more SF (7 percent) than PG (0 percent) over the course of his NBA career.

    (1) Most effective as a wing, “close to” almost defines enigma when thrust into different offensive roles
    (2) Bbref is wrong.

I don’t mind giving Sochan a chance, the problem is that putting him next to Huk or Mitch (and sometimes Hart!) is not really giving him a chance.

If we face Detroit in the playoffs we’re going to need some practical fouls. Sochan is 6 of them. We have yet to load up on Cade.

    (1) Most effective as a wing, “close to” almost defines enigma when thrust into different offensive roles

Sure, in the same sense that Mitchell Robinson could play PG but is most effective as a C. The Spurs played Sochan at PG but he’s incapable of being an actual PG beyond a positional listing.

I’d play every player on our roster at PG over Sochan save OG, Dadiet, and our centers.

I describe him as close to no offensive skill in the same sense I might describe Jared Jeffries because someone might object that Jeffries was a decent offensive rebounder.

I’d play every player on our roster at PG over Sochan save OG, Dadiet, and our centers.

Sort of agree but Dadiet, high handle and all, might surprise. Seems to have court vision, just not quick enough right now

missed the last 2 games…watching the rockets game now…

jalen brunson is listed at 6’2″ and 190 lbs…hard to believe jalen doesn’t weigh at least 200…

If Sochan can be the Cade stopper , i’ll say this was a great trade, no matter what he does the rest of the games.

I’m sorry, I love Diawara, and I have high hopes that he’ll be a great player for us going forward. However, right now, Sochan is much better on defense. It will be defense that determines whether either of them will see the court in the playoffs.

    things from the rockets’ game…

super happy with jose as our backup point guard, his hustle and defense stay at a consistent high level, also like the way him and shamet play together…

why in the world did udoka take thompson off brunson in the 4th, bad decision there…

when he first came in the league i was a shamet fan, has a nice looking shot, and looks so sincere in his effort…glad he made it here…surprised he missed that free throw so badly at the end…

josh still looked off a bit in the game, tired or something maybe…can’t believe those 3 charges jalen took, maybe he can play some defense…

catching the bulls game now…biggest standout out pre-game:

ain’t buying yabu jelly as once a knick always a knick…

don’t really see deep dish pizza as pizza, but hopefully yabu can show some restraint…

maybe his bet to give up the option for next season pays off, bulls seem willing to have him start the remainder of the season…

    yabu dabu tank commander extraordinare…

I don’t think you beat the Pistons by trying to push them around. They are the ones who will beat the Knicks by doing that. You beat the Pistons by stretching the floor and making it difficult for them to guard you. Playing Sochan in that series just means that Duren or Stewart will have free rein to bully Brunson or whoever is trying to get into the paint.

Play a combination of Brunson/Deuce/Shamet/Mikal/OG/KAT on the floor and let them try to outscore you. Don’t try to out defend them.

When Delon Wright was here, he was kind of our defensive specialist who would come in for 20 seconds at the end of the half until he was forced into a slightly larger role. That is what I think Sochan should be. “Situational defender.”

It’s called sample size. You guys can’t take a few minutes in one game and determine that works or doesn’t

Sorry, but we have 5400 minutes of tape to look at. We all know the definition of insanity and expecting a different outcome from Sochan unless he materially improves his shooting is just silly.

SA is vying for a championship today and in the future and GAVE THE GUY AWAY. If they felt he could lock down Cade or Shai for 30 seconds they never would have cut him.

Now, however unlikely, they could be wrong, but only if he improves his game markedly which he couldn’t do being mentored by the best coach in the history of the game and his hand picked crew.

We should try Alvarado, Hart, Sochan, OG and Mitch just for the fun of it. LOL

Swap out Huk for OG and I’m fairly certain that would cause a fatal rip in the Space-Time Continuum.

My tin foil conspiracy re Sochan is that the front office wants to manage the next contract that Mo will get and playing him less will help achieve that goal.

I’m sorry, I love Diawara, and I have high hopes that he’ll be a great player for us going forward. However, right now, Sochan is much better on defense.

Sochan career DBPM = -0.6 Diawara career DBMP=+0.7

My tin foil conspiracy re Sochan is that the front office wants to manage the next contract that Mo will get and playing him less will help achieve that goal.

This assumes the other 29 GMs don’t look at tape or look at numbers.

Cmon bpl, a dbpm entirely against starters in fact often the best starters and a dbpm almost entirely against scrubs are not the same.

    @JCMacriNBA

According to Cleaning the Glass, the Knicks are now 10.7 points better per 100 possessions with Karl-Anthony Towns on the court this season.

That ranks 1st among 45 players who have seen at least 1600 minutes of court time

Maybe the Spurs can knock the Pistons down a peg tonight. But I’d really rather that Boston remembers how to lose a game here or there. Spurs led by Devin Vassell took an 11-2 lead 2 1/2 minutes in and forced a Detroit timeout.

Another interesting fact I read today was how much better the much maligned starting lineup has played together this season compared to last season. Smaller sample size obviously but so far they’ve doubled their net rating.

just finished the bulls’ game…very thoughtful post game interview from KAT, he sounded really clear…

jalen had a couple of more nice defensive plays this game…

feed the big cat…things just work better that way…

alvarado has an elite skill with the steals, wonder if maybe huk might be able to become an even better shot blocker…

Spurs took control of the game v Pistons. They attacked Cade frequently who was in foul trouble most of the second half and made him work on offense. Also protected the paint.

Very nice Spurs win tonight in Detroit. They matched Detroit’s physicality and grit. Hitting, pushing, Wendy shoved to the floor probably a dozen times, and so on, yet the Spurs kept their composure and played physical defense themselves. That was impressive.

Protecting the paint is very easy when you have an 👽 at Center

Spurs have solid team that became great when they got gifted the best prospect ever

Yes, SNWSIT, they had a plan, contained Cade, protected the paint, and made Detroit feel off balance. I wish our team had done the same against them.

I mean Wendy being at the rim definitely helps on defense . It allows a team to play way more aggressive because any mistake will be cleaned up behind you.

The Knicks have Towns as back line defense

Spurs won tonight cause they were 18 for 40 from 3pt compared to Detroit shooting 7 for 36.

Yeah… all we need to do is to get them to cut Wemby instead of Sochan and then we’ll have a guy who can close the lane with 6 blocks and 17 boards. We can’t defend them the same way SA can.

    Wemby**”

LOL At least you’re in good company. You’re not the only one saying it. 🙂

Precious with 22/12 tonight (sigh). Yeah, I know, I know…….much easier to do that for the pathetic Kings. Much like Yabu’s recent stats.

    1

Spurs won tonight cause they were 18 for 40 from 3pt compared to Detroit shooting 7 for 36.

Correct, but numbers don’t mean much unless they are contextualized. In the gym, most players shoot over 40%, I am sure. Why doesn’t this translate into real games?

We probably watched different games last week when we were humiliated by Detroit at home and Cade was getting anywhere and everywhere he wanted with no resistance whatsoever. And I guess the reason they outrebounded us by a ton without their top two centers is because we didn’t have Wemby on our roster. Right.

“In the gym, most players shoot over 40%, I am sure.”

Are you referring to NBA players, or to guys named Hermie and Franky at the local Y?

Some 3P volatility is just normal variance and some is related to defense. And by defense I don’t just mean whether the shot was open or guarded. It also means the location of the shot and how rushed or pressured the shooter feels to get his shot off quickly or to make it.

Sometimes I think you have to look at more than 3p% to explain what happened in a game.
