2025-26 Game Thread: Knicks @ Pistons

After probably their best win of the season (or was the NBA Cup the best win of the season?), the Knicks head to Detroit to take on the #1 seeded Pistons.

Let’s go, Knicks!

Feeling great about 58!

This will be a stuck-in-the-mud game, but maybe Brunson has an inspired night. No Duren either.

let’s see if we can win an ugly one…tough tough 14 game stretch coming up as marechal pointed out earlier…

initially I thought going 8 – 6 during that span would be disappointing – not thinking that way now…

one game at a time though…

Yeah, Duren is a huge part of their team. I think the Knicks can still win this one even without KAT, Deuce, or OG.

But yes, it will certainly be tricky!

It might take a fucking miracle for the Knicks to score 100 pts tonight.

It tends to happen when the opponent is allowed to assault you in every possession.

Edit: oh, but moving screens do get called.

I do like how NOBODY will challenge Mitch in the paint. Is there a statistic for causing cowardice?

“You can’t call all four” is the most tautological BS these commentators spew. Guess what: if you start calling fouls, the other team will adjust and foul less.

If this was a preseason game and I saw this Knicks lineup I’d probably change the channel.

Serious question — am I the only NY Knicks fan who calls Mohamed Diawara Cool Moe D?

It seems just waiting for the taking, no?

Hukporti is really not playable. Not really sure why people think he is.

Well we’re finally hitting baskets cuz Kolek is alley ooping MItch, but then the Pistons are hitting threes in return.

Atrocious quarter. 28% from the floor vs. Detroit 59%. Let’s see if we have the mental fortitude to fight adversity and not fold. If we keep it close, we may have a chance.

This is all luck by Detroit. They’re not a good 3 point shooting team but they’re hitting everything right now. Law of averages will even out and we’ll be back in this game

It is impossible to overstate how bad Clarkson has been recently

2

We beat these guys in the playoffs?

Is that right?

Clarkson is the worst. O can’t overstate how much I dislike the signing. Bring on Jose.

Opposite to Clarkson, Diawara looks to be super smart. Nice to get open on the inbound play and managing to beat the clock.

I was hopeful for the first 10 minutes as we kept our composure. Then we literally fell off the cliff, got embarrassed, and once again showed we don’t know how to overcome adversity. It’s not only that Detroit’s defense shut down our highly advertised offense; it’s also that they are getting literally anything they want on our side of the floor.

We will probably lose but only because Brunson is having an awful game and we are forced to play Clarkson minutes. I would play McCuller the rest of the way – JC is unplayable.

Detroit doesn’t impress me at all. If they suddenly didn’t hit every 3, their offense would be nothing special. And we missed a lot of wide open 3s. Half of those go in, we have a game

Brunson having an awful game is largely the effect of Detroit defending him well, knowing his moves and tricks. One can say the same about our offensive sets being shut down, with the exception of the first 8-10 minutes when we were finding open shots. One the other side, the Pistons are hitting their threes largely because in most cases there is no Knicks player anywhere near them. And they are also getting into the paint with ease.

I don’t know what news was worse, seeing the final Knicks injury report knowing they’d get embarrassed tonight or reading that for some stupid reason the Yankees resigned Goldy.

slightly worried that hart was in plantar flexion while turning upcourt at a weird angle off his left foot, which could be lisfranc conditions. hopefully just aggravated the ankle.

I can take the loss, but I cannot swallow the humiliation. Second time, same impression. The team looks helpless, if you know what I mean.

The team looks like they’re missing their 2nd and 3rd leading scorers plus their leading scorer off the bench.

I’m pretty sure this Knicks team couldn’t give a rat’s ass about Detroit being the 1st seed and therefore trying to prove a point against them.

It sucks for us cause as fans we look forward to these games but I assume these losses to the Pistons don’t mean shit to the Knicks. Just like last season when they went 1-3 vs Detroit and 0-4 vs Boston during the regular season and it didn’t exactly affect the Knicks mentally come playoff time.

Sorry, Al, I will disagree. I don’t think we looked so helpless last season, and, most importantly, it is exactly that mental fortitude and grit that we seem to miss this season. Time will tell whether I am wrong or not.

I’m pretty sure this Knicks team couldn’t give a rat’s ass about Detroit being the 1st seed and therefore trying to prove a point against them.

I couldn’t disagree more. No top team gets pulverized at home by one of its main competitors and mails in the rematch. The very fact that they gave Towns and OG the night off when Towns played with that cut in the 2nd half last game tells me Brown was avoiding a potential second embarrassment. Detroit came to play. The Knicks came prepared with excuses. And to be clear, had they played hard and lost a close one, I’d be fine. Detroit is a damn good team and they were home. Right now I’d say NY better hope Boston or Philly or someone else KO’s off Detroit, because we are very unlikely to beat them

For those who watched the whole thing, did any Knicks do anything positive at any point in the game?

I had a music lesson which saved me from watching most of the game. Clarkson was actually three for six and scored 11 points in nineteen minutes and had four assists which isn’t a bad box score line. In what way was he so horrible?

I wouldn’t single out one specific player positively or negatively. The team played with composure and patience for about 8-10 minutes and we were close, despite the shots not falling. We were finding open shots, getting stops and defending fine. Then Detroit flipped the script and we had no response, plan B. I don’t know if we had plan A to begin with. Plenty of substitutions don’t mean new strategy. Then Brunson came back started playing hero ball. The end.

Please, Strat… for the love of God, at the 6:12 mark of the first quarter with the game tied at 9-9 Brown showed what the game strategy was” subbed and went with Mitch/Huck/McCullar/Shamet and Brunson.

That’s running up the white flag. He didn’t have 3 of his top 8 available including 2 very important starters and Hart SHOULD have had the night off as he clearly wasn’t near 100%.

Of course Thibs likely would have played Brunson , Bridges, Hart , and Mitch all 45 minutes trying to win a February game.

I am surprised as a sports bettor once OG/ KAT and Deuce were out, they had zero chance against Detroit after they had gotten spanked the night before, you didn’t unload on Detroit.

Detroit is a very good team with a superior defense. Their offense and lack of shooting will be their Achille’s heel in the playoffs.

But tonight when you are starting Diawara and Huk and Mc Cullars are 2 of your first 3 off the bench AND you have to play Ckarkson meaningful minutes due to lack of bodies with a pulse, I don’t know what you expected.

Clarkson was -23 and looked every bit of it.

total shitshow all around for everyone. Mikal probably had the least worst night.

I’m with Al. This sucked, but we were missing 2 of our top 5 guys, and DET is already a bad matchup for us. In the end, it’s only another regular season game.

We’ve just gotta keep tightening up, shake it off, and play better next time.

Z-man everyone was horribly negative in their plus/minus. For this game, I don’t hold it against Clarkson
