To start us off on a slow Friday (happy Friday!), here’s Macri’s thoughts on team depth as looked at through the lens of Hoop Hype’s top 100 players list, which is an interesting exercise, if nothing else.

    Best Top One:
    1. Denver (Jokic)
    2. Dallas (Doncic)
    3. Thunder (SGA)
    Best Top Two:
    1. Lakers (2 of the top 13)
    2. Sixers (2 of the top 15)
    3. Suns (2 of the top 16)
    Best Top 3:
    1. Sixers (3 of the top 27)
    2. Timberwolves (3 of the top 32)
    3. Thunder (3 of the top 43)
    Best Top 4:
    1. Celtics (4 of the top 50)
    2. Knicks (4 of the top 57)
    3. Cavs (4 of the top 60)
    Best Top 5:
    1. Celtics (5 of the top 54)
    2. Pelicans (5 of the top 74)
    3. Knicks (5 of the top 81)
    Best Top 6:
    1. Pelicans (6 of the top 78)
    2. Knicks (6 of the top 86)

He points out that if Mitch were healthy, we might just be the only team with seven players in the top 100 (no team currently qualifies).

I went on a train of thought following that list that ultimately led me to the following station:

I don’t think Donte’s position on this team is as sacred as the other Nova guys.

Brunson and Bridges are untouchable for basketball reasons. Josh Hart isn’t untouchable but he’s extremely secure. We’d have to be blown out of the water with a favorable trade to consider moving him, and I can’t imagine any other team wanting him badly enough to make us an offer we can’t refuse.

But Donte? At that salary and coming off that season, he is trade market gold. Plus we have Deuce ready to easily slide into that 7th man spot.

If we can trade a slight downgrade at Bridges’ backup for a major upgrade at starting Center, I can’t imagine there being much political fallout. I know these guys like each other but I think Brunson, Bridges, and Hart would rather win a championship without their 4th roommate than not win a chip with him.

Of course, all this is moot if the small lineups pan out. I’m sure that’s Plan A. Moving Donte for a center is probably Plan B, and I doubt there needs to be any sort of political waiting period.

I mean, that comment wasn’t really wrong

Yeah, I liked Robert a lot, even met him a few times off the site, but that was definitely his style. And it was a good one! People like both he and Lena. It’s hard to hear criticism when you’re putting yourself out there in writing, though.

    Cavan was great. Much missed.

As for DDV, that’s been my point: he’s our best trade asset by far. If he weren’t part of the Nova Corps I don’t think it would be a question that he’s the outgoing piece in a trade for a very good center, along with Precious/other salary. Orlando has extra centers and needs shooting. Portland too, but not quite as much. The new Wiz gm might do it simply because he’d know he could spin off DDV for another piece (or picks) he prefers.

DDV already has a title, so I don’t even feel it would be that bad for morale.

That banning always left a bad taste in my mouth. Almost left the site, albeit as a lurker then. Made me wary of subsequent ones until Mike K gave a “Who is consistently stopping the conversation” ban criterion (am remembering, don’t quote me) which I thought was good, but not relevant.

LeBron is NOT a top 13 player in the league anymore and it’s ridiculous for anyone to pretend he is. The Lakers had two of the top 13 players, each of which played over 70 games and averaged 35 minutes a game…and the best they could do was 8th in the West?

It’s amazing LeBron is a good as he is at his age but top 13? Get outta here.

    @sny_knicks:

Julius Randle will “accept any role that’s asked of him on this Knicks team if it leads to winning,” says @IanBegley

“As SNY noted earlier in the offseason, Randle has been excited about this Knicks team and believes they can make a run. He’s looking forward to being back, healthy, with this group, and thinks things can be special with Bridges. He wants to win and win in New York.

(The frustration he recently expressed on social media was genuine. But it was a reaction to the false idea that the team wasn’t selling his jersey at Madison Square Garden).

I believe New York has a chance to win a championship with Randle. That belief is based on the idea that Randle and the 2024-25 Knicks can play with the cohesion and chemistry that they showed in January. That will probably require a sacrifice from all of their top players, Randle included.”

Continuing along the train of thought I am riding by myself…

Naz Reid is #91 on that list. 5 spots behind Donte. He has a player option for $15M this summer that he surely will decline.

Naz is their Quickley, i.e. he is a backup for them but would be a starter on 20 other teams and is going to want to be paid like one.

Minnesota is currently a 2nd apron team and will be one again next year if they have to pay Naz. The penalties for two years in the 2nd apron are severe.

Their two options in the backcourt next to Edwards are either too old (Mike Conley is 37) or too young (Rob Dillingham is 19) for a team whose window is right now.

Tell me Donte DiVincenzo at $12M doesn’t solve a ton of problems for them? They’d be Edwards-Donte-McDaniels-KAT-Gobert until Dillingham matures. And they’d be able to narrowly avoid the 2nd apron next year with some easy cap maneuvers.

Maybe I’m vastly underestimating their friendship but I think Jalen Brunson would drive Donte to the airport for Naz Reid. I know Thibs would!

Looks like we’re bringing Theo Maledon to Westchester… nice French homie for Dadiet to learn from.

    …if it leads to winning…

Thx, Cyber. Behold the new and heavy weight of high expectation, right? It’s been a long time since the Knicks have carried it.

I’ll be curious to see how long patience lasts for Julius and all parties, including “we happy few.” 😉

    January?

Continuing along the train of thought I am riding by myself…

Dude, I first proposed trading DDV a couple months ago! You may be riding the train but it’s my railroad. But I doubt Minny will trade Naz – he’s a folk hero there. Though the second apron is brutal, and they do have an ownership struggle, so…maybe?

    Mitch/Naz
    Randle/Precious
    OG/Hart
    Bridges/Deuce
    JB/Kolek (or Cam)

    That’s potent.

If DDV’s form from last year is sustainable, he’s a candidate for 6th man of the year that can also play in the starting lineup if there is an injury.

If OG gets hurts, Mikal slides over to SF and DDV (or Hart) can start.

In the event Randle is still having issues, OG slides to PF, Mikal slides to SF and DDV gives us some extra scoring punch as a starter to replace Randle’s lost scoring.

It would take quite a C for me to consider moving DDV.

I was one of the guys that was skeptical about the signing because I felt it created a minutes glut and opened the door to trading Quickley (who I loved), but since I was just as hot for OG, it all worked out fine. Now that we have DDV and he exceeded most expectations, we should keep him.

IMO we have to find another path to getting a starting C.

Maybe Ariel Hukporti is the guy that can surprise us to the upside and play C before the season is over.

Actually agree with Strat’s first post, which is always nice (but not his second!). While a mad fan of Deuce, I want to see him replicate last year before I start to think he’s a decent replacement for DDV. DDV’s excellence in a multiplicity of potential roles, as Strat outlines, is pretty key for this season.

Dude, I first proposed trading DDV a couple months ago!

Sorry, when I said I was riding alone, I just meant on the stream of consciousness I was vomiting. Not by any means trying to take credit for suggesting we trade Donte. I know that wasn’t an original idea.

I think most posters would identify him as the guy, tbh, but many think the Nova connection is unbreakable. My guess is Hart is protected by that bond but Donte is not.

But I doubt Minny will trade Naz – he’s a folk hero there.

Quickley was beloved here, too. The situations are quite similar: Naz/IQ need/needed to be paid like a starter; it doesn’t/didn’t make sense for Minnesota/New York to do that.

Actually agree with Strat’s first post, which is always nice (but not his second!).

I’m not projecting Hukporti to become the starting C. It’s more like a prayer. 😉 I don’t see a path to what we need that doesn’t create a hole somewhere else. Maybe there will be some interest in Dadiet? We know there’s interest in Deuce. My guess is there’s a lot of interest in Kolek, but I want to keep him.

Quickley was beloved here, too. The situations are quite similar: Naz & IQ need/needed to be paid like a starter; it doesn’t/didn’t make sense for Minnesota/New York to do that.

I think that’s the argument for Towns still being available also. But there is no real path to Towns I can think of that doesn’t include Randle and I’m not sure any of that makes sense for either side anyway.

Naz Reid would be an amazing addition. The perfect backup center. Don’t know why they would do it though.

Dude, I first proposed trading DDV a couple months ago! You may be riding the train but it’s my railroad.

Is this Monopoly Trains? I think i’m going to buy a train station on this railroad! 😀

Yeah, Naz Reid would be great. This would be the time when i’d say this trade won’t happen, but Leon has proved me wrong enough times. Who knows, maybe Leon is also in Hubert’s train and Rama’s railroad at this moment, on his way to Minnesota. 😉

I’ll be curious to see how long patience lasts for Julius and all parties, including “we happy few.” 😉

I’ll be patient, i’ve waited all decade long in the 90s for a title*, and sadly we couldn’t get there. Let’s see if we can get there this time. 🧡💙

*but getting to 2 NBA Finals was also very good and i remember fondly those days.

Not that it’s surprising but Begley does make it clear the FO is looking to shore up the center position. Says we checked in on Capela and pondered flyers on Bruno Fernando and Omer Yurtseven. Also says to keep your eye on Nick Richards and Kessler.

I’m kind of glad we’re trying to find a real solution before running to the Omer Yurtsevens of the world, who aren’t going anywhere.

Richards makes pretty much exactly Deuce’s salary, so I presume that would be the trade. I wouldn’t love it, but it would obviously be trading from a strength to address a weakness. Plus Richards can actually hit free throws, which is cool.

I prefer Kessler and Capela out of the names mentioned.

Capela fits best to make a serious run this year. Kessler may not be ready, but he’s young, has upside and Thibs could get the most of him. He could be similar to I-Hart in that he can start off playing behind Mitch, but ultimately take over the starting spot.

Naz Reid would be an amazing addition. The perfect backup center. Don’t know why they would do it though.

Because he should be a starting center and will likely get paid as one.

count me in on loving naz in a knicks uni…minny is on the cusp though, i don’t think mitch, deuce and whatever else we got will get him here though…

Is Minny on the cusp? Mike Conley is 37. Rob Dillingham is 19. They need 48 mpg from those two. That’s an achilles heel in the West.

Based on the Claxton/Hartenstein deals, I’d peg Naz’ next contract at $20-25M. The two guys he backs up make $100M!! You can’t shell out that kind of money in the 2nd apron era when you’re +1200 to win a title.

One of those 3 guys (KAT, Rudy, Naz) is getting traded. And I don’t think there’s a market for Rudy at $44M.

The China Beach people licensed a cover of the original theme song, so I’m out of luck on that one. Dang!

    Is this Monopoly Trains?

Ticket to Ride, cyber. Good game.

We aren’t getting Kessler. I don’t really know that Ainge has a particular strategy at this point beyond mugging anyone who wants to trade with him whether it makes sense or not.

Naz Reid stretches the floor and is a local talent but I think he is only 6’9”. Can’t rim protect in the drop coverage or offensive reboun. Just doesn’t pass the Thibs smell test.

Speaking of college, any NCCU grads out there? My daughter just got accepted. It is her first choice.

See if that other early 90s vietnam war show is looking to stream and start working on Paint It Blackish! (I’m only half half-joking. Doing work on spec can be a drag, but at least you made something that hopefully satisfied you creatively. Share a soundcloud link for it with us, we are all fans of JK47 here:)

I feel like theyhave to keep Reid for a playoff run, right?

    Sorry about the song JK.

I enjoyed the NYT article on the song These Days by Jackson Browne today. My mind was a little blown when I learned he wrote it when he was just sixteen years old. Song histories are pretty fun.

Yeah, Donnie is right, we’re all JK47 fans around here, and it’d be awesome if you shared the song with your fans! 😉
Too bad they went with another song, can it be adapted for another show? Meaning, can you try to sell it to similar shows, maybe new ones would be even better, or was it too specific for China Beach?

The music supervisor who brought me in on the project is going to shop the song around to music libraries, and some library will probably license it. It won’t be anywhere near what the fee was going to be, but it’ll be something at least. I’ll upload it to SoundCloud and link here when I get a minute.

geo you are still the MAN.

It’s fucking unbelievable that just four years ago we were “wtf Leon?”and now we’re quibbling over whether this 5-year window monster is going to win at least one championship or perennially fizzle out in round 2 or 3. We have a team of talented tough-minded badasses who will do us proud every fucking night, win or lose. That’s all I could have asked for.

here’s a recent photo of leon…so funny, this is like the best day some of these folks have ever had…

for leon, it’s like a decent tuesday afternoon…

yes, all hail the man who has been there, done that…well, you know except for a major sports team championship…that would look cool on his resume…

yes, jimmie d. may have in fact finally assembled a group of folks ambitious, talented and driven enough to achieve their dream…together…

i wonder if everyone will be silently staring at mitch in the locker room, making sure he don’t hit the floor too often out on the court…looking suspect at anyone not named mitch playing center…

it’s late now, but, maybe a better question for another time – how important is seeding to us?

maybe a mute question, the team will go out to win each night…the end of our roster is improving…

if we’re healthy with our center position solved, 2 thru 6 shouldn’t matter too much going in to the post season…

it must be really late – cuz now the thing i’m wondering most going in to the season:

what hue of brown will thibs remaining follicles be this year?

should he simply get a hair piece? why not?
