Game Thread 2023-24 Knicks vs. Hawks: Brunson is Okay, Thank Goodness Opener, Which is a Thing Today

The Knicks host the Hawks at the Garden, but who cares? Brunson is going to be okay!

Win or lose tonight, that’s the important thing!

Let’s go, Knicks!

Too bad we don’t have Ron Baker anymore… for the Shake & Bake(r) !! šŸ˜€
Gooooo Knicks! šŸ€

May Josh Hart go 4-12 with 15 rebounds, 10 assists and 5 steals so we can debate tomorrow whether or not he sucks.

Why? Just why? Oh, G-d, why?

Brunson had an MRI and it was clean, so thatā€™s good.

Marechal for the win!

They’re certainly not taking the time to give out championship rings.

Live by the three, die by the three…

(and the seven-footer euro whatever…)

But probably not.

Actually, it’s impossible. We’ve got a point now.

For a moment I thought theyā€™re broadcasting a re-run of the Warriors gameā€¦

not that sloppy a game to begin, hopefully the ball starts going in for us…

that’s right thib – NO ONE TRUSTS YOU WITH PLAYER HEALTH!!!

I hope this isn’t yet another game where the opposition shoots like 50% from 3 for the first half.

Hopefully Knicks can hold on to homecourt in the 7th-8th seed play in game.

I feel like the whole team has gotten clean look after clean look and missed most of them.

So everybodyā€™s denting the rim, Deuce hit a three and heā€™s subbed for Burks?

Sighā€¦

I hope Burkina gets yanked again soon.

Nobody else can buy a basket, but his shots feel like they’re off before they leave his hands.

That sucked.

Other than the last couple of minutes, it was good offense with shots that just didn’t fall.

I really dislike Burks. Jesus.

i want to know who on the staff watches game film of burks running the offense and says “yep…that’s the ticket”….

Well, big leads in the 1st quarter are usually meaningless but we do need to stop missing every shot we take

Well, at least Vasilije Micic and Nikola Jovic are coming through for me thus far.

So our offense is horrible, but luckily our rebounding and defense suck, too.

The Knicks lost 3 points!

The officials took away Bojanā€™s only three (but why?)

The officials took away Bojanā€™s only three (but why?)

How can they review whether he was out of bonds after the play?!?

That Thibs look says, “What did I do to deserve this?”

E: “Everything!”

Well even if we were making our 3s we’d still be getting killed. Maybe Jacob gets some playing time tonight

Tonight we just might have the better Burks, too. The jury is still out.

Add Kelly Oubre to Vasilije Micic and Nikola Jovic killing it for me tonight.

You know what would be the best thing in the world and the worst thing in the world, at the same time?

Taking a Knicks City Dancer to a club.

iHart going for a nice violent one there instead of just taking the points was not great

That offensive foul on Bojan was a jokeā€¦

It was absurd. What was he supposed to do?

you know raven, I’m having a hard time seeing the downside to taking one of the knick dancers to a club…

other than them trying to dance you to death…not a bad way to go though…

Precious may suck but he’s 3-3. Only guy shooting better than 37.5%.

This Hawks team will crumble at the slightest hint of adversity please make some shots!!

Precious repeatedly slashing to the basket with the ball is not something I saw on the scouting report for the trade. He refuses to believe he sucks. Good on him.

That Precious full-court run for the bucket made me laugh out loud.

This Gus/Clyde telecast is making me check my drink to make sure it wasnā€™t spiked.

Just to preempt the ā€œwe could have had Jalen Johnsonā€ comments, he was 3-12 in his last game vs Brooklyn.

We donā€™t need Jalen Johnson. We have *checks notes* Precious Achiuwa?

I’m liking Gus, but he keeps saying things I was about to type. Saves you guys getting more posts from me, I suppose…

I’ll take an 11 point game.

Did we get any explanation about the Bojan 3PA that didn’t count? Was it a shot clock violation? I have the game on mute so did not hear what they said.

11 pt deficit. Poor Hawks, they won’t even know what hit them. šŸ˜€

Did we get any explanation about the Bojan 3PA that didnā€™t count?

Announcers said ā€œstepped out of bounds.ā€ I didnā€™t see the actual replay, though.

Marechal, his foot was out of bounds. Why they checked it isn’t clear to me.

So if we can just have only Precious (5-5) and Donte (2-3) take twos, and only Bogey takes threes (3-5) the rest of the game, we win going away.

If we let iHart and Hart take twos (1-7, 0-2) or Dante take threes (2-11) we’re doomed.

Tonight we just might have the better Burks, too. The jury is still out.

Who?

It would be really, really helpful if we didn’t start the second half with two centers again.

It would be really, really helpful if we didnā€™t come out for the second half with two centers again.

Infinitely less likely than everyone on this board taking a different KCD to the next KB meetup

The Knicks had like 5 deflections on that last possession and the Hawks still scored

any favorites there amongst the KCD ladies EB?

Based on those photos, Dayne. I’m usually a pretty big fan of Nneka too

8 minutes into the half and still no sign of our best scorer. First guy off the bench is Jericho Sims.

WHAT CAN THIBS POSSIBLY DO, THOUGH!?

Iā€™ll be surprised, but very happy, if the Hawks lose the challengeā€¦

Deuce has been terrific tonight despite not being particularly efficient.

Deuce has been terrific tonight despite not being particularly efficient.

7 AST : 1 TO, pretty great.

The number of Hawksā€™ baskets out of broken ticky-tacky plays is outstandingā€¦

We got a lot of dog in us but worried everyone is totally spent for the 4th. Bogey take us home!

Or doesnā€™t throw the ball awayā€¦

No doubt.

And is Josh Hart a pure point guard or a scoring guard who passes? I canā€™t remember. No fighting; no fighting. šŸ˜‰

Letā€™s F-ing go!

And is Josh Hart a pure point guard or a scoring guard who passes? I canā€™t remember.

In the immortal words of Steve Kerr, he plays ā€œwinnerā€ šŸ˜‰

And is Josh Hart a pure point guard or a scoring guard who passes? I canā€™t remember.

He’s a rebounding specialist center

Boy, you guys are tough.

Between the balls just not going in, even on dunks, and balls wildly bouncing to Hawks players all game long, someone very powerful does not want the Knicks to win this game.

They keep showing that guy on the sidelines with the red glasses and I keep going, “What movie have I seen him in?”

The comeback was real, we tied the game.

Now weā€™re losing the next one šŸ¤“

The patented Burks running banker

Yeah, that is more like the plan.

And Burks has been garbage since he came, but he strikes me as a guy who could hustle a lot of money on playgrounds well into his fifties.

At least the Knicks are having a better time tonight than Toronto is at home vs the Pelicans.

We ainā€™t winning this, but itā€™s nice to see Deuce looking so strong and shifty!

Wait. Clyde NEVER got a technical foul. Crazy.

And, man, Deuce is willing us. He is everywhere.

PS ā€” Devo may have money on the Hawks.

Our three best players tonight have been Deuce, Precious, and Bojan and they’ve been on the court together zero seconds because our coach is a simpleton who can’t deviate from a script.

Burks and Donte are 4-22 from 3 on mostly pretty good looks, that’s the game pretty much

‘Donteā€™s killing us tonightā€¦’

He’s gotta cut down on those pressure cups…

And who’s that guy on the Hawks who goes to iHart’s tattoo parlor?

Was the guy with the red glasses in Book of Eli?

Thibs should have probably told the boys to make more 3s

He’s in playoff form.

That Dejounte shameless flop into an offensive rebound and easy score is “one of those nights” things

I don’t remember them playing through iHart today at all.

Something unforgiveable: Sims has more minutes than Precious tonight. Precious shouldā€™ve played center with Bojan at the 4 while I-Hart was resting. Thibs has consistently fucked up the distribution of frontcourt minutes since the Randle injury.

Deuce has played about as well as you can while scoring 11 points on 15 shots, he must be exhausted

They need the cavalry back stat.

The standings might look ugly by Saturday.

Case in point: game is gone. 2 min left. Play the bench. Get them minutes. Rest your horses.

@geo: Why would I have to be bored to be making money off of Alperen Sengun and Vasilije Micic? I’m far from being bored tonight! (Actually, I’m pretty much never bored.)

Achiuwaā€™s the only Knicks with a positive +/- and heā€™ll end up playing less than Simsā€¦

The Hawks suck but when youā€™re down 4 starters itā€™s possible to lose to anyone.

If on Friday the Knicks have the same starting lineup as tonight I might seriously not bother watching a minute of the game.

we are 3 attempts off the franchise single game 3 point attempts record, which is pretty funny considering some of the arguments today

Thibs runs a modern offense he just usually doesn’t use modern lineups.

With all the missing we did having Sims out to get offensive boards sort of makes sense but idk, he’s pretty limited

we are 3 attempts off the franchise single game 3 point attempts record, which is pretty funny considering some of the arguments today

And our 40% 3 PT shooters were 13-45 tonight.

Weā€™ve seen it before, when you put yourself in a deep hole you spend too much energy climbing out and then youā€™re gassed when the game is decidedā€¦

Plus, we shot threes like shit all night longā€¦

Those six-eight minutes between the first and second quarters when we went down by 22 were horrifying. When Bogdanovic and Burks are together on the floor the team looks worse than the Detroit Pistons. This is when the game was lost. The Knicks fought back but they donā€™t have the alpha player to take over. DiVo was bad on both offense as well as defense tonight. Really bad. Unfortunately, there arenā€™t other options on the bench. We lost the benefits from the unexpected win in Cleveland two nights ago, and the tough times continue. Itā€™s depressing but we need to continue treading water.

If Brunson doesn’t play on Friday Knicks might have a hard time scoring 90 pts vs Orlando.

If we get Brunson back we could theoretically win the next 4 vs Magic, (I mean come on we have to beat them once right?) Philly twice at home and Portland on the road.

B Fernando with 14 turnovers per 36 in this one, new league record?

Playing Jericho Sims 26 minutes??? When your team can’t score??

Playing Jericho Sims 26 minutes??? When your team canā€™t score??

It’s not the coach, though. Dolan sets the rotation.

Deuce played 45 minutes and was still in every hustle play and busting up the Hawks on D right down to the wire.

I wonder what our record would be if Spo or Kerr coached the team we put on the floor tonight for 82 gamesā€¦

Bojan should ideally be playing 15 min/game against backups but it is what it is. We really need OG and Randle back.

Kerr is overrated, Spo is the one coach that can win with scrubs.

I wonder what our record would be if Spo or Kerr coached the team we put on the floor tonight for 82 gamesā€¦

70-12?

Kerr would’ve had an opportunity to prove if he could win with scrubs if he had taken the Knicks job when Phil offered it to him.

More fun Deuce — he took 5 offensive fouls.
Assists to turnovers? 9-1.

Donte took 17 (!) threes and made 5. Someone compared him to Starks the other day ā€¦.

I wonder what our record would be if Spo or Kerr coached the team we put on the floor tonight for 82 gamesā€¦

17 – 65 seems reasonable.

At this point Dallas has to be losing at home to all these teams from the East just to spite the Knicks.

Deuce needs to develop a floater or short jumper or something just like IQ. If he becomes a thread around the basket, this will open a lot of options for him. Right now he gets around the paint and doesn’t know what to do. Most of the times he has to pull back.

Curry got injured during the 2019-20 season and the Warriors finished with the _____ record in the NBA

if it makes anyone feel better Evan Fournier was 2-8 from 3 tonight

Also, Ron Baker went 4-10 on TPS reports.

8 minutes into the half and still no sign of our best scorer. First guy off the bench is Jericho Sims.

It is statements like this that are so tedious. Bogy played 16 minutes in the first half and 15 in the second. 31 minutes is a more than fair allotment for a 34 year old who had 3 rebounds, zero assists, zero blocks and zero steals while shooting 6 for 18 for the game. During that 9 minute stretch in the 3rd quarter where he sat, the Knicks reduced the halftime deficit of 11 down to 6. The Knicks were -10 for the last 15 minutes he played. We all get you have issues with Thibs and that is certainly fine as most have some issue with this coach. I just think his minutes allocation of Bogy tonight is a weak argument. If you criticized his play of our precious one, you would have a fairer argument. I’m guessing Thibs had a reasonable reason for playing his best player tonight 24 minutes , but I’ll be damned if I see it from this seat.

It is statements like this that are so tedious.

Fuck off.

The coach is such a simpleton that he canā€™t even deviate from a two center lineup when heā€™s down 11 at halftime.

Brunson is okay, so, really, who cares about this game? They’ll be fine once he’s back.

And I think HCA will be safe, as well, as once OG returns, they will be winning so damn much.

When Bogdanovic and Burks are together on the floor the team looks worse than the Detroit Pistons.

The Pistons were worse when they were on the floor in Detroit and they were the worst team in the league. I think that makes them the worst of the worst, but hey, all the ā€œexpertsā€ on TV and in the papers loved the trade.

Can we talk about why OG is not expected to play on Friday or Sunday this week? He had the surgery around 2/7. Joe Johnson managed to return in 19 days from same exact surgery because his team needed him. How long was Steph Curry out?

The idea was that they would be successful as a kind of a ‘sidekick’ to Randle and Brunson when the team is healthy. This is not the case right now, they are asked to do more that they were brought in for, and the are not up to the task. It may be unfair to them, but it is what it is.

An NBA team is not going to win many games without both a starting PG and backup PG (with a few exceptions we donā€™t have), especially if there are a couple of bad defenders getting major minutes.

We are a few weeks from getting healthy and whatever happens from there happens, but Iā€™m not expecting a lot unless Randle is 100%.

Iā€™m already looking forward to Randleā€™s surgery, trading Bojan and a pile of picks for Mikal Bridges (who has to be getting frustrated by now) or trading Bojan, Mitchell, and a pile of picks for something even bigger. Next season weā€™ll have the final product and be ready for the big time.

All of that is true. I just think neither of them is very good at basketball when you consider both sides of the ball.

Fuck off.

Now THAT IS tedious. Try 10mg Diazepam and get a good night’s sleep…. Yep what this game needed was 39 minutes of Bogy so then you could rant at Thibs for playing the old man too much….

Brunson is okay, so, really, who cares about this game? Theyā€™ll be fine once heā€™s back.

Every game counts. The roster we put on the floor these days is not a playoff roster. We are now in 6th place and it looks like we will be in the play-in at best by the time our injured players come back with not so many games left to play. I don’t know if Brunson alone can drastically change things given that defenses key on him with Randle out. Furthermore, even when all injured players return, they will need several games to get back to what they were. Will they? The same applies to the Knicks as a team.

In sum, playoff berth is not a sure thing, though we do have a good chance.

All of that is true. I just think neither of them is very good at basketball when you consider both sides of the ball.

People are currently mad that we didn’t play Precious Achiuwa more tonight. Precious for his career averages 14 points per 36 on 53% TS and I can’t say they’re wrong. We’re really beat up, we have maybe one good offense player if we’re not playing Bojan and Burks.

All of that is true. I just think neither of them is very good at basketball when you consider both sides of the ball.

This is the trade off. Bogdanovic is slow as a sloth. Brurks is slightly better on defense. But they are both very good shooters and at some point they will start making their shots at a higher rate. Remember that last year we lost to the Heat because nobody could hit the ocean from the outside.

Every game counts. The roster we put on the floor these days is not a playoff roster.

The roster we put on the floor tonight is a top 5 lottery roster. And every game counts so when y’all say your prayers tonight, be sure to say a special one to Uncle Thibs who played his starters a few extra minutes in November- February and banked a few extra wins that are sure going to come in handy in early April.

You couldn’t have said it better. Those imbeciles fail to take into account that we would be in the play-in at best without injuries had Thibs prioritized minutes over wins early on.

Good thing the Mavs have a significant gap between themselves and the 11th seed or Cuban might start thinking about tanking soon even if it pisses off both Doncic and Irving. We could get a very good pick from Dallas.

Watching Dallas over the last few years has been hysterical. They went from being one high caliber 3&D role player away from being a serious title contender to a musical chairs comedy of errors and asset abuse thatā€™s taken them further away and left them less to work with. Cuban is the worst. Steve Mills would be an upgrade. OK, maybe thatā€™s an exaggeration. šŸ˜œ

In NLK News (No Longer Knicks), as reported Evan stank up the join with a Burks-ian shooting night; RJ and IQ had decent box scores but terrible plus-minuses (-19 and -21) in a stinker loss, Grimes and Evil Donte got more DNPs, and Obi had a decent if short night (14 pts in 17 min, 5-6 overall).

I’m still surprised Obi’s back to being a scrub. I thought for sure he’d get 20-25 minutes a night at worst, which is what he started out with but he’s now back to Thibsian levels. I guess we’ll have to wait a while longer for the ‘unlocking.’ Makes me a little sad.

Everyone is making good points about what we are putting on the floor now. I agree with all of you.

But we put ourselves in this position.

Everyone also knows how much I love OG. Iā€™d make that trade for him again.

However, this team really misses Quickley. He wasnā€™t just our backup PG. He was also our 6th man energy scorer off the bench that could easily slide into the starting lineup to replace Brunson. He also had impact on defense. We could still win games like this if we had Quickley. We donā€™t. We have OG.

That is why Iā€™ve been screaming about replacing Quickley. We needed a Brogdan type player or someone similar to run the 2nd unit, add scoring punch and start when Brunson was out.

As it was pre trades, this was a well constructed team that needed an upgrade from RJ. OG was the perfect player in every way. But we lost our backup PG, lost scoring punch off the bench, and weakened our bench defense. We tried to add some offensive punch with the Grimes trade, but that didnā€™t resolve the backup PG issue and weakened the bench defense further than the loss of just Quickley.

This is not a well constructed team right now.

In the off season they need to undo the damage of the Grimes trade and resolve the scoring and backup PG issue the RIGHT WAY.

Everybody loves IQ. I wish we could keep him. The Knicks wanted to keep him but they couldn’t for the known reasons.
