Circling all the way back to Alan (and Mischa Barton) at the top of this thread, I wonder if our wonderfully astute critic has read the epic takedown in today’s NYTimes of Monsieur Adam Sandler’s latest Netflix picture, and what if anything he thinks about reviewing artistic endeavors in such a brutal (yet funny) way. Bueno, or no?

Sorry, I stayed off the site yesterday because I felt too down about the current state of the team.

I haven’t read the Spaceman review, nor seen the movie. I will say that when I was younger, I definitely took pleasure — way too much pleasure — in finding creative ways to trash shows I didn’t like. As I got older, though, I realized that there was no need to be an asshole, except in the rare cases where something wasn’t simply bad, but offensive, either in terms of subject matter, execution, the people involved in front of or behind the camera, etc. And even in those situations, I very rarely go to that place. (When Peacock put Mel Gibson in that stupid John Wick prequel miniseries, I complained about his presence but didn’t pile on about it, for instance.)

Lots of people work hard on these things. Which isn’t to say you shouldn’t point out all the ways in which those things are bad. I just don’t like writing gleeful takedowns anymore — though I will admit I occasionally enjoy reading them by other people. So I’m a hypocrite.

Katz posted a familiar sounding argument today:

The Knicks are short-handed, no question, but they’re also chopping off their fingers.

On Thursday, Hart played 47 minutes, 10 seconds against the Warriors. That’s a full 50 seconds of rest, a risky proposition. What a tease it would be if the Knicks welcomed back the injured players only for others’ production to drop from exhaustion.

Innings eaters exist for games like Thursday’s, in which Bogdanović and Burks combined to play 30 minutes.

No baseball team sits its No. 5 starter and starts its ace on short rest in July just because a feared team is coming to town. The purpose of the innings eater is to start that game and maybe lose it but help his team get through the regular season. And then when the playoffs begin, the rotation shrinks to three or four pitchers and others on the staff aren’t gassed or hurt.

It’s one thing to use Bogdanović and Burks situationally or to stick with someone like Hart when he’s having a great game, which he did Thursday, despite the poor shooting. But it’s another to play Hart for 47 minutes in a February match that the Knicks never even led.

Thx for taking the time, Alan. I expected a thoughtful take from you, and it’s nice to read it here.

As for the players’ minutes, I’m def on the hand-wringing team. I appreciate the iron man stats trotted out (MJ! Wilt!) and the argument — “they’re professional athletes!” — but I just don’t see the point of risking repetitive stress injuries. Not every player is MJ, nor should that need pointing out.

Also, in addition to protecting the health of our favorites, I believe giving your Down The Bench players more minutes during the season is very good for the team overall, and it helps them immensely when they are forced into service by injuries to starters, as many of them have been now.

You could even argue that the “extra” games won by keeping, say, Brunson or Randle on the floor “too long” are then lost back when Deuce or Sims or Precious needs multiple games to figure out what the hell to do after the same starters go down.

Shake Milton was just released by DET, maybe he’d be a good depth piece…

Playing Hart all those minutes is suspect on its own. It’s brain damage level stupid when he’s on record saying he’s got a bad knee that he’s going to have to manage all season. It’s just as bad when we have banged up star players playing late in games that are essentially over. He may be just barely on the spectrum, but Thibs is obsessive about some things that don’t make any sense.

I jokingly suggested to one of the beat writers yesterday that if the rules allowed it, the team should just forefeit their next 3 or 4 games, see who’s healthy at that point, and then maybe resume play. We’re definitely in vicious circle time, where the more we try to compensate for injuries, the more injuries are created.

Though as Fred and a million other people have noted, Thibs needs to be willing to play Bogey and Burks more, even if the defense suffers. Playing Hart nearly a full game is insane, even if he’s one of the best conditioned guys in the league.

He may be just barely on the spectrum, but Thibs is obsessive about some things that don’t make any sense.

Thibs himself looks like he can barely run from the couch to the bathroom, so I suspect he’s compensating.

I don’t want Hart playing that many minutes for sure, but I kind of suspect why Thibs did it. The team needed the rebounding. Hart out rebounded Sims and Ihart combined. I suspect the if iHart could play more minutes, you wouldn’t see so many minutes of JHart

I think the most salient point Katz made is that we never even led this game.

The team looks exhausted. They were a step slow all game against the Warriors. This minutes insanity is putting the playoffs in bigger danger than it already is, and it’s not even a recipe for winning.

EDIT: Hubert beat me to it.

Complaining about Thibs’ crazy minutes strategy is like complaining that it’s cold in Minnesota. You’re better off accepting the reality of the situation. That said, I wonder if the former Pistons will even play once we’re at full health? If not, it’s kind of a waste of Grimes.

I mean the minutes insanity in the dubs game is literally one guy playing insane minutes. Which is dumb-Thibs should either play Jacob Toppin 8 minutes or should let Burks or Bojan play the 3 for a bit.

If I could head off any defensiveness … this isn’t about “hey let’s kill Thibs”, more like “man this sucks and I just want to talk about it with people who get it”.

Dred, it’s chilly here in Duluth, but having all the starters still out right to the end of the game down by 11 and clearly not coming back is sort of Derrick Rose. Looking at you, Jalen.

Nationally televised game, so there’s that. And barely double digits. But they weren’t coming back that last two minutes. Barely treading water.

I edited it out, darules, bc I’m trying not to be too depressing.

It’s reality, exhausting your players is obviously not a recipe for winning. The Knicks cut it to 4, but the minute Kerr put back his rested started the game was over.

The Detroit diaspora goes a combined 1-11 last night. Not a great look so far.

Actually rooting for them. They’re not making it easy.

I mean the minutes insanity in the dubs game is literally one guy playing insane minutes.

There’s a cumulative effect. Brunson and the team looked stuck in mud.

Then again, down in Memphis Dalano Banton, Jabari Walker, Duop Reath, and Kris Murray beat Jake LaRavia, Lamar Stephens, GG Jackson, and Jordan Goodwin 122-92. So maybe we should be happy with what we have, as little as it is at the moment.

The Detroit diaspora goes a combined 1-11 last night. Not a great look so far.

Our guys went 2-13 last game, looks like we won the trade!!!

    *starts running victory laps*

GG Jackson is pretty good for a 19 year old, but other than that it’s a horror show in Memphis

Our guys went 2-13 last game, looks like we won the trade!!!

    *starts running victory laps*

Haha. Wait. Maybe all the players were/are bad?

The insanity is currently more about thinking you can actually win games this way.

It bothers me that Precious Achiuwa and Josh Hart lead the league in minutes bc that’s a terrible forward combination.

I don’t want Bogey to play more so Precious & Hart can rest. I want to do it so we can score.

I don’t want Hart playing that many minutes for sure, but I kind of suspect why Thibs did it. The team needed the rebounding. Hart out rebounded Sims and Ihart combined. I suspect the if iHart could play more minutes, you wouldn’t see so many minutes of JHart

This is kind of another problem. We’re running 2 C lineups and we’re still losing the rebounding battle. No bueno.

In theory, Jacob should rebound well enough at the 3 to cover for Hart a couple minutes.

Thibs himself looks like he can barely run from the couch to the bathroom, so I suspect he’s compensating.

He’s too tired to comb in his Just for Men dye.

Ooo, Barnes broke his finger. Looks like RJ and IQ should be getting some buckets going forward…

Damn RJ’s been a different man:

    Knicks – 766 mins, .536 TS%. -2.2 bpm
    Raptors – 767 mins, .616 TS%, +0.2 bpm

I wonder if Barnes going down will bring out the worst in him again.

Sorry, I stayed off the site yesterday because I felt too down about the current state of the team.

I hear you Alan, I’m basically doing the same this days because my mood is mixed between “disappointed” (for the injuries) and “pissed off”.
And I’m not pissed off because we lose games, that’s predictable given the injuries and I still think this team at full strenght is a contender, but because during dire straits the well known limitations of our coach are adding to our misery.

It’s insane to have J-Hart (and his cranky knee) play the whole game… and it’s only one of the questionable choices about playing time of the last few weeks.

It’s nonsensical a starting-5 with J-Hart, Achiuwa and I-Hart, especially against a “small team” like the Warriors.
We’re in NBA 2024, where the offenses are so advantaged by rules, spacing awareness and shooting prowess that everyone gives less importance to the defense, at least in the regular season.

It’s irrational to not use your end of the bench guys when you miss 5 players (see the Pelicans game) and go with a 7-men rotation instead. No surprise they were spent in the 4th quarter.

It’s unbelievable (and unwatchable) that three weeks after the trade we still don’t have a fucking single play to free Bojan, not even a simple one.
90% Our offense is one player (JB, Deuce, Bojan or Burks) who pumps the ball for 15 seconds and then shoot when he sees fit.
My neighbor, who coaches 10-years old boys, could do better!*

Yes, they never give up and that’s wonderful, but they fall in holes so deep they can’t get out (see the Warriors 14-0 start that we never recovered) and spend a huge capital of energies trying.

Injuries happen**, losing game without our frontline is understandable, but we could “lose better”.

I know there’s no sense in complaining, Leon will never fire Thibs and he’s here to stay, but after our best stretch of play in years (and the enthusiasm it did bring) this depleted lineup is difficult enough to overcome even without self-destructive decisions…
and anyway once in a while one needs to blow off a little steam 🙂

Sorry for the rant guys… (dejected sigh)

    * Then you watch the Warriors’ players move and cut and curl… and you can only shake your head…

** And our coach is one of the worst in the league to manage “nicked” players, so we always fear the worst…

RJ’s assisted basket percentage on 2-pointers is through the roof in Toronto. He’s getting assisted on 69% of his two point attempts there, compared to 53% of his attempts here. That 53% was a career high for him with the Knicks, he had never cracked 50% before in his career. He’s also getting way more attempts at the rim.

On the one hand, that shows you The way Thibs used him was completely wrong. On the other hand, it shows you that RJ is purely a complementary player— he needs somebody else to create offense for him and is not an initiator. Add in the nonexistent defense (his defensive metrics have remained poor) and you get a decent player but more of a nut and bolt than chrome and leather type. Still wouldn’t really want him on his contract. I’m also skeptical that his 3-point shooting is sustainable. If that were to fall off a bit he’d be back to a negative BPM player.

With Barnes now out, pretty much all of the Raptors’ shot creation is gone, and they’ll need Quickley to carry a lot of the load of running the offense. Should be interesting to see how RJ’s numbers hold up the rest of the way given that scenario.

I haven’t read the Spaceman review, nor seen the movie.

It lost me a little when the spider started calling Adam Sandler “skinny human”. 😂

I very rarely give a movie a 👎 but I did with this one.

It’s hard to find anything Thibs does right on offense other than get them to hit the boards and try to keep TOs down.

I watched part of the Warriors game (under difficult streaming conditions) and I thought I saw a play run for Bojan. He came through the paint out to the three point line and received a pass and took a three point shot. He didn’t get as free as we might have hoped, but the warriors defense was good that game.

It’s nonsensical a starting-5 with J-Hart, Achiuwa and I-Hart, especially against a “small team” like the Warriors.

kerr was licking his fucking chops when he saw Thibs the Neanderthal trot that lineup out there…

It’s hard to find anything Thibs does right on offense other than get them to hit the boards and try to keep TOs down.

Before the rash of injuries hit, the post-OG team was absolutely cranking on offense. There was plenty of outside shooting including two great corner 3 specialists on the wing, and two quality initiators.

Now, you could say that any coach could get results with that lineup, and you might be correct. But at any rate that lineup looked very good. Alas.

I’m with you, JK, but you could also say that the full line-up we had in January was tailor-made for Thib’s particular offensive thinking. But a team that doesn’t fit that specific suite of square holes can look fairly helpless as Thibs keeps with the definition of insanity (doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results).

I can’t help thinking — and have thought this for a while now — that like in football, we need an assistant coach who is the offensive coordinator. A good one.

we need an assistant coach who is the offensive coordinator. A good one.

    Hysterically nodding my head…

There’s no offensive coordinator in the world that’s going to help if Thibs is doling out the minutes. The allocation of minutes during this stretch, with so so many minutes going to the lineup with two bigs, has been disastrous. There’s no way to make a lineup with three non-scorers in it work in the modern NBA and that’s what we run out there a lot of the time, unless we’re playing the lineup with four non-scorers.

I watched part of the Warriors game (under difficult streaming conditions) and I thought I saw a play run for Bojan. He came through the paint out to the three point line and received a pass and took a three point shot. He didn’t get as free as we might have hoped, but the warriors defense was good that game.

We’ve run plays for him before.

Re-watching his attempts from the last few games, the most common has been Bojan starting at the top of the key, diving to the paint, then returning to the top of the key with a C setting a screen to free him up. It usually fails because Jericho Sims misses the player’s body entirely. Hartenstein made it work once, although having Fournier as the defender undoubtedly helped.

There was another play when Bojan & Precious acted as if they were setting screens for Deuce, Bojan slips his and crosses to the other side of the court past Precious. Deuce threw him the ball but a defender nearly jumped the lane and everyone has time to recover to their man. Bojan drains it over the top anyway.

There was a baseline inbounds play where Bojan ultimately comes to the corner to receive the pass and shoot. Again, Sims is in the vicinity and seems like he should be setting a pick.

I probably missed some plays where he didn’t end up shooting, but my takeaway is that Sims sucks at setting screens. Bojan needs very little room but Sims can’t even provide that.

I, for one, am impressed that the Knicks were in the game at all against the Warriors, who are pretty healthy and are on a good roll. From the discussion here, one would think that a few tweaks in lineups and minutes allocations would have worked better than what Thibs ran out there. I don’t think that’s the case at all. But whatever, I guess you can’t please everyone.

I’ve *literally* never heard of Kenny Gorelick, whoever that is. I don’t even care enough to look him up. LOL

i have an even more important question doogie…

i used the word whom above instead of who because i thought the word whom more accurately depicts the possibility of more than one person…

    is that correct?

oh yeah, hope al is well with you here on a saturday…it’s raining off and on out here…

good stuff EB, whom on the team are our best screeners?

No idea, but pretty sure it’s not Sims based on the plays I watched

isaiah maybe – he has quick feet and can move quick enough to get in place…

ha – mitch is more like a police barricade once he gets set…

this frets me – how in the world does julius deal with screens until he gets his shoulder fixed and healed?

is there like some super orthopedic tape that’ll keep it in place…

long sleeve compression t-shirt with padding…

julius needs serious bubble boy treatment out on the court…

god i hope we do not play miami in the post season…

I would have used “who” in that very specific circumstance, geo, but not a big deal.

Getting ready to go out to dinner with my GF. Waiting for her to get ready. Always worth the wait. 🙂

    No idea,

hmmmm, i wonder if there is anyone from our frontcourt who sets screens well…

actually, i do see it happening, just not taking notice of it beyond the moment…

anyone know if there is an associated stat for successful (leading to made basket) screen setting?

jiminy, where is super stat milo when he’s needed so badly…

what kind of food y’all eating?

is it a get dressed up type outing?

it seems these days just getting in to jeans/khakis is a big deal for me…

Just an American joint tonight. We thought about Thai, but had that last week.

We like to get a little bit dressed up for our Date Night Saturdays, even though the places are nice enough but certainly don’t require that. I wear a dress shirt, dress shoes, and chinos, and that’s good enough. She always looks good without even trying to.

awwwww, have an awesome evening doogie 🙂

so wonderful to hear the joy you get from your companionship…

ah, i see, it has nothing to do with numbers:

Who functions as a subject, while whom functions as an object.

Use who when the word is performing the action. Use whom when it is receiving the action.

very good…i still don’t understand it all, but i know enough not to use whom to indicate multiple individuals…

quiet evening here, daughter came to visit which is nice…probably get back to playing spiderman 2 later…

i’m at level 20 and just now getting the hang of swinging and flying…it’s funny – there’s air currents in the city that you have to take in to account while moving around…

fun game…basically ever since tony stark and peter parker met up in Captain America: Civil War in the marvel movie universe, within the game universe peter’s and miles’ suit have next level gadgets incorporated in their suits now…a lot of cool tech…

i still haven’t got to the part where i get venom powers…basically i just wanted to reveal the entire current available map, and do all available side missions before progressing further in the story to get the venom powers and start fighting kraven…

plus, it’s been a while since the last game, and there are like a gazillion different button to press to fight/move and progress through the game…

cool game maps of new york city 🙂

In other news, Detroit doesn’t actually have the worst record in the league any more. Washington has overtaken (undertaken?) them.

for some reason i thought the cavs game was tonight – how cool to see it’s not…more rest please…

except for alec and bogey, those guys need to be running sprints til they start playing better…

    @IanBegley:
As they monitored Alec Burks, Bojan Bogdanovic & DET, NYK checked in w/MIN on Shake Milton prior to trade deadline. Source confirms they’ll sign him once he clears waivers. Interested to see if Tom Thibodeau expands rotation or if Shake takes current rotation spot. ESPN 1st on it
    https://twitter.com/IanBegley/status/1764080406507254038

So Shake is a 6’5″ shooting guard who is shooting 27% from three.

Don’t we already have some of those?

Shake has been pretty bad this year but he was a fine enough bench guard before that

And this perhaps mostly for geo, they’ve remade Roadhouse, with Jake G (not Kenny G) playing Patrick Swayze.

Coming to Amazon late this month.

I don’t know what’s been going on this year, but last year’s version of Milton would be much better to have around than our flotsam and jetsam.

Will be interesting to see how much he plays, since I would assume he had a couple of suitors.

Milton’s a decent player and an improvement for the bench,
another move that looks like a further indication they are very confident about the timeline of OG and Julius recovery…

Have they re-signed Jeffries and Toppin after theirs 10-days expired?

    Z–man says:
    March 2, 2024 at 09:50
Shake Milton was just released by DET, maybe he’d be a good depth piece…”

    Come on, guys…catch up!

Happy to see Milton signed. Not going to be a huge part of the rotation when everyone’s healthy (unless he shows out), but will really help spell our guards. He can also penetrate, unlike Deuce, so that’ll be an improvement

Just like January was the height of Knicksdom, so was February the height of Deucedom.

How many times can my heart be broken, and it’s only March 2…

Isn’t it theoretically possible that Milton does not clear waivers because some team claims him?

Is there anything more we can do as fans so that the Knicks crush the Cavs tomorrow? I would really like that to happen.

I’ve drawn up a couple plays for Bobo on my white board, and I’m sipping wine about to tuck into NAPOLEON, but I’m afraid that won’t be enough.

The Utah Jazz, who have very little hope of making the playoffs, played Laurie Markkanen 41 minutes and Keyonte George 43 minutes.

hi raven, thank you for thinking of me 🙂

daughters visit was nice…may finish watching one of a trio of “bad” superhero movies recently released to streaming:
    – The Marvels
    – Aquaman 2
    – Morbius

started watching Morbius and not so bad so far…

basketball wise – it feels like the nuggets are toying with the lakers…

Shake Milton has been hot garbage, but he’s still at least an NBA point guard, so I’m down with it.
