Game Thread 2023-24 Knicks @ Grizzlies (What’s left of them opener, which is not a thing)

Tonight, the Knicks head to Memphis for the second leg of this weird mini-road trip, where they will have no chance whatsoever of losing against the decaying husk of the Memphis Grizzlies.

This will help on the road back to my 53 win projection!

Let’s go, Knicks!

After last thread’s many jinxes let’s hope our players’ hands are not as cold as Mimi’s in La Boheme… 😉

Let’s Go Knicks!

They really should just give Brunson the night off at this rate.

And the ushers.

Brunson is officially out and I’m actually glad about that, let him rest and hopefully he’ll be back for a fairly big game Monday vs Orlando.

Deuce starting!

football, basketball, fight night…good evening of sports entertainment…

oh yeah, go knicks…not a prayer of coming out on top tonight though…

total trap game…beware unknown grizzes going off like crazy…

we don’t have a chance…

Australian Open starting a day early this year… Really been enjoying the Knicks though, that comeback vs Dallas was inspired… even if the outcome wasn’t a win, I just love the way they compete.

Fuck it, I’ll watch all the things

Clyde with a relatively demure suit but bug sunglasses!

He’s talking up Deuce…

Keeping myself cautious. Despite Memphis’s litany of injuries, this almost feels like a trap. Knicks need to get out to a big lead so they can let their bench play some extended minutes.

Average for the five Griz starters is 31.7 pts per game. Can we top that?

Trying to come up with a Grizzley version of ‘…bottles of beer on the wall’ and failing. But they’re down to 8 players.

Fun to watch Randle on D tonight. Clearly saving himself for his 40 pt night. An insult to turnstiles the world over.

Just tuning in, and … um … which ones are the Generals?

EDIT: haha. Dmar, better

you know you’re in trouble when Breen calls the opposition a “scrappy group”….

someone wrote an article years ago about the way guys who weren’t great individual creators would go at Steve Novak when he was matched up on them and they would fuck up more than you would expect. That’s kind of our whole team right now

There are a lot of passes from the Knicks tonight that would get you crucified at the Y.

I was going to watch, but got Dolaned. I’m in NJ instead of China temporarily so I decided to pony up for a month of MSG and watch on my laptop. So I paid the bill and lo and behold, streaming didn’t work. I contacted support and they just wanted me to try different browsers. That didn’t work. So after half an hour of support I gave up and asked for a refund. Then I was told all sales are final. So they didn’t deliver the product and I never watched anyhrhimybut they want to keep the money. I’m disputing, but I doubt I’ll win.

Knicks Fan — try fubo, free one-week trial. Google fubo.

Just remember to cancel before the week is up.

I take back any optimism I’ve expressed about our prospects of late. This counts as the worst loss of the season even if we do happen to win.

Correction Breen, it’s not like the Knicks aren’t playing hard, it’s like the Knicks are playing incredibly stupid basketball

that stinks KfniNJ…hopefully, at some point the service kicks in, not sure why it is not currently kicking in…

this is a tough one to watch so far – once again the other team is playing harder than us…

what in the heck is wrong with josh hart?!?!

Daenerys is the mother of dragons. Memphis is the mother of all trap games.

Knicks are playing like they think they are in AAU

Breen noticed before I could type it, but our two-headed point guard is 8-9, including 4-5 from three, for 20 points and 6 assists in just the first half.

Very Brunsonesque.

That was borderline embarrassing. So many bad passes and no follow through with plays leaving the Grizzlies to get second chances.

This game proves Randle cannot lead an offense. He’s sleepwalking on both ends. Really low effort. And his turnover problem is rubbing off on the team.

I rip this team if I’m Thibs. They are just getting outworked

SoNice, I’m with you. I actually felt physically relieved when Randle was out for a bit. He’s just kind of walking around out there, except when he gets the ball, but then his unforced errors are hideous. And lots and lots of 4-on-5s for the Grizz kids. He’s not even arguing with the refs, just standing around.

This wouldn’t just be the worst loss of the season, it might be up there with the worst loss in Knicks history considering the opposition

Griz may have to suit up Simon Sez in the second half. He brings the high energy you need off the bench.

Amazingly Knicks might not be having most embarrassing performance of the night thanks to the Hawks…

I only watched halftime (the Bucks and Magic were both at halftime too, so I floated over to check in on this game). It was strangely entertaining, but maybe that’s because I feel for those fans that paid nba prices to watch g leaguers play. They deserve a good game of Simon Says.

I’ve lost count of how many passes OG has deflected but it’s been picked up by a Grizzlies player.

The way OG can finish in the lane is such a stark contrast with his predecessor.

Great block too

OG uses his strength and length to finish in spots a lot of players
would not, but every once in awhile he kind of loses track of where he is or rushes and throws up a bad one around the rim. There’s room for improvement.

IHart might reach 40 minutes tonight. Also Flynn played well surprised didn’t come in earlier in 2nd half.

OG challenging Randle for Stupid of the Night.

To be fair, Randle’s second half has been fairly quiet and not so ugly.

I don’t like to criticize J-Hart, but he can be a bit annoying at times. He passes up too many open 3s and also tries to do too much sometimes and it leads to a bad result.

I’m coming around more to the idea that we need someone to spell iHart more than even Brunson

Yup Knicks need someone to play backup center. If IHart got hurt we are in major trouble.

The less said about this game the better, just take the W and hope Brunson is back on Monday.

You can never be embarrassed about a win.

But if you had to pick one win to be embarrassed about……

The starters had to play way too many minutes b/c of the team’s sloppy play. Still, no reason why Thibs couldn’t have played Sims a few minutes to spell iHart some.

That was fugly.

But to all the Deuce Doubters out there before the game, take that.

And they were full-courting him with a 6′ 9″ player much of the game.

As for Jalen McFlynn, 28 pts on 11-15 (5-9 from three), 8 assists, 7 rebounds.

nice post game with deuce…hopefully iasaih will get a chance soon to speak post game…

not much question as to whether he’s capable of being an nba starting center…

can’t shoot, but can pass too…

The need for backup center is most pressing. Thibs refused to even bother with Achiwa in the second half (and rightfully so cuz he’s been awful imo). But he needs to try at least Sims in games like this. Hartenstein too valuable to be playing this many minutes

“Was og efficient today?”

Weird game for him. 7-15, 1-4 from three, 5 rebounds and 4 blocks (!), but also four turnovers, most if not all of them unforced throwaways. Plus the mind-fart foul on the three-point shot.

So overall not a horrible game, but in the first half especially he was better when you didn’t notice him. Not his best game so far.

Looking at the team stats Knicks basically dominated the game like they should have, only reason this game wound up being close was the turnovers.

A career night for Deuce — 19/6/5 on 7/10 shooting and 4/7 from three. Hats off to him.

But how did he look, PG-wise? I missed the game, but it sure sounds like our offense was a mess for large chunks of it.

But how did he look, PG-wise?

McBride always performed well in Westchester. He probably felt very comfortable going up against his former nemesese “J. Gilyard”, “G. Jackson”, “V. Williams Jr”, and “J. LaRavia”.

Def agree that back up C is the more pressing need.

But I gotta say since the trade if you told me we had to trade one of McBride or Grimes for an upgrade to the roster, I’d probably trade Grimes. I feel like McBride has stepped up more than Grimes and tonight being able to start and play well with Brunson out was a really positive sign (even if it was agains the griz). McBride just seems to play with more confidence and has really improved his three point shooting. Yeah he’s undersized but you could play him as a back up SG if you had another PG and get away with it bc of his defense. Grimes still seems kind of passive to me.

Alan, Deuce looked comfortable. He had two very bad turnovers during the first half, although he was by far not the worst culprit. But he also had a number of nice drives to the hoop throughout the game to both score and dump off. A thing we were not quite sure he could do.

Basically the offense ran smoothly with him in, at least until people threw the ball to the Grizzlies.

I mentioned above, but clearly the Grizz had a game plan to full-court press the “new kid” to see if he fell apart, using a 6’9″ long-armed defender. But Deuce played through it.

Yeah Deuce wasn’t a problem offensively at all, the turnovers came mostly from boneheaded, lazy passes by the veterans.

Idk, my issue with Deuce is more his inability to get Randle going than his own shooting, and it seems like Randle didn’t get going.

His shooting numbers are 🔥, it’s everyone else I’m concerned about

Randle looked good attacking the basket, but also looked like his pre-Brunson self a lot of the time. 24/11/5 but 9/21 from the field (1/6 3PT) and 6 turnovers.

From Stefan Bondy via Twitter:

Knicks won but Julius Randle (six turnovers) wasn’t happy with his play:

“I was awful. I was terrible. I’m not going to lie, I was terrible.”

“I was awful. I was terrible. I’m not going to lie, I was terrible.”

No one ever accused Randle of being a liar. Too much ball holding, dribbling, waiting for the double to come, and driving to nowhere. That kind of stuff is ultimately going to lead to TOs or bad shots by someone. Without Brunson we are going to get more of the Atlanta Hawk version of Randle where all his bad habits come out. We were fortunate he wasn’t very inefficient.

The Sims in Jail thing does make me mad. Against two undersized teams filled with scrubs, getting him some minutes to spare iHart — and see how Sims handles himself — seems more than sensible.

Still not sold on Precious (has anyone actually seen him jump?).
