So is the bot now publishing the morning thread around 7 a.m. rather than 8? As a too-early riser, I welcome this change if it’s permanent.

cyber must be happy that Queta got extended action in a Bucks blowout of the C’s…

I know this isn’t baseballblogger but this write up in ESPN+ on the latest Yankee signing that is going to end exactly the way everyone knows it will was excellent:

Sometimes, it almost seems like all of the tools we have for evaluating the quality of individual pitches has become so fine-tuned that it has clouded our judgment of the overall worth of a pitcher, particularly a starter. Increasingly, this myopic lens that focuses on pitch performance, expected stats and rate measures seems to have side-stepped the very basic question of just how often a pitcher can execute what he does well. The Yankees, in particular, seem to cling to this pro-rata perspective while seeming dumbfounded why, once the games actually start, most of their rotation is on the IL.

The Basketball Gods have a way to punish hubris and they did it yesterday.

Both JB and Julius were horrible in the first half, too busy with their personal agendas (former team, birthplace), and that lead us back to bad habits: reduced ball and players movement, clunky and dumb fastbreaks, bad defense on the perimeter.

But as usual the Knicks never quit (kudos to Thibs) and with a bit of luck and better refs we could have saved our skin.

No big deal, crappy games (or half games) happen and in every one there are lessons to learn, it’s on our players to show they did it, by taking care of Memphis’ MASH Unit.

I did not get to watch the game though I did follow the last quarter on Gamecast. Was it just a really horrible 1st quarter with Kyrie going off?

Yeah, in hindsight maybe we were getting a little too carried away lol.

Looking at the stats, seems like it was a game where someone like Brogdon (sp) would have helped off the bench. I love McBride and he has gotten better but nights like last night seem like perfect examples of why we need more scoring punch off the bench and another REAL PG.

Besides him not really being much of an offensive player outside of that amazing Philly game (and obviously I’m burying the lede a bit, as his offense is roughly 90% of my problem with him), my big problem with McBride is that, for a defense first player, he’s just so damn short. Kyrie Irving only has an inch over McBride, and yet he was shooting over him!

In hindsight, I can see where maybe I might have gotten a little carried away.

If you are not going to get a little carried away after the start of the year we have had, you probably are not enjoying life as much as you could. But last night did show that if you want to get to 16-0, you cannot afford even 1 bad quarter out of the 64.

Dallas came out super motivated like it was a playoff game. It seemed the Knicks were not prepared for that level of intensity. They fell too far behind before they realized they were actually in a game and had to earn the win.

OG had a rough night shooting from 3, but he was still +14 for the game. They have to get him the ball more often cutting, in transition etc… We have better 3 point shooting and spacing now. We should be taking advantage of the better spacing and not become overly dependent on the 3s or we are going to lose games we should win when they aren’t falling.

Dallas came out super motivated like it was a playoff game.

I never thought Kyrie reads Knickerblogger before but now I’m not so sure.

    Setbacks build character.

I arrived midway through the 3rd, and all our “Other Guys” were 1 for whatever on offense. We all kind of suspected this would happen every so often, but the poor D?

Yes, Kyrie is amazing, but isn’t the whole point of OG (and Deuce) that we can stop these so-called Alpha explosions or at least limit the damage better? Obvs Hardaway JR had a big game also. Did those two Mavs just beat our good D and we tip our caps? IDK.

Clyde said we started to double Kyrie in the 4th, suggesting we had played single coverage until then. So maybe our problem is just a Thibs adjustment that came too late? Time will tell.

I never thought Kyrie reads Knickerblogger before but now I’m not so sure.

Did Kyrie say something like that post game?

No but he posted a link on twitter to a KB thread in the summer of 2022 that he had bookmarked.

Well, if anyone’s an expert on ‘getting his’ it’s Melo. But some impressive flame nonetheless.

That was a combo platter of pupu. Mavs came out with super intensity and never let up — damn good defense, which I did not expect to say about any Mavs team, maybe ever. 80% shooting from three for a while, which partly was leaving folks wide open at the line but also just hot shooting. We stopped moving the ball, which led to sloppy play and turnovers that led to a 25-1 fast-break point differential going into the fourth. And honestly, the basketball gods didn’t want us to win, cuz some of the 50/50 balls went to the Mavs due to extra energy but some went to the Mavs because they were in the right place and the Knicks just weren’t.

Flush and pray the toilet doesn’t back up.

Melo talking down on a player for being selfish is an impressive lack of self awareness.

EDIT: Raven beat me to it.

I hate to pile on the guy because like everyone else I find him eminently rootable, but for all the issues last night we probably win the game with someone better than Deuce getting those 9 minutes.

He’s not a point guard in any sense of the word, so like BC said he’s basically have a 6’1″ defense first wing. That’s…not a super valuable player, and probably not one in the rotation of a team with real aspirations. He can probably stick in the NBA if he wants to, but as more of an 11-15th man than an 8-9th. Come in to defend Trae Young for a possession, that kind of thing.

The second unit is crying out for someone who can make things happen with the basketball. Thankfully it seems like the front office is aware of this and trying to address it.

Seems like we had some problems with their pace early in the game. Lots of those Mav buckets in the first quarter came in transition. This was also one of those infuriating games where we just never seemed to get any 50/50 balls.

Noble, not a defense of Deuce as his play was, well, icky, but that was a team loss. Even our two 30-pt players were out of sorts. You could equally argue that the number of times Randle turned it over stupidly or stayed back to argue with the refs, leaving his team to play 5-on-4, was enough to lose a two-possession game in the end. Somehow even iHart with 15 rebounds felt non-essential. The only player to have a solid game (mostly eye test, but that was an eye-test game if there ever was one) was DDV. Pretty much everyone else stunk it up.

At first I thought OG was the last move this year. I just didn’t see the upgrades from our present people. Worse, I have PTSD from being a Knicks fan and have seen them slaughtered in negotiations. So, no to Brogdon unless it’s Deuce and a second rounder. If you’re going all in, great. One of Donte or Quentin and all the picks for Donovan Mitchell. (12 rebounds yesterday has me convinced.) Then, if Deuce is still here, we can take back up the conversation about depth at the one, but with a different perspective. Obviously the plan is to go all in around Jalen AND Julius. Might as well do that now. Unless they think this roster can get it done. They have a month to see before the deadline. Good spot to be in. We have OG, who’s a pretty clear upgrade. We’re very good now and have a chance to get even better. But nights like last night are frustrating. No Luka and no W. So, it’s still a work in progress most likely.

There really isn’t a way to stop a player like Kyrie 1-on-1 in these games.

From the (not always informative) matchup data on NBA.com, Kyrie only scored on Deuce that one time. He did the same thing shooting over OG on a play, so I’m not sure his height would’ve made a huge difference.

It strikes me as odd that Grimes almost never guarded Kyrie as he was out PoA defender initially.

good on the mavs for jumping on us from the tip…bad on the knicks for not being prepared for tip-off…

Well, if anyone’s an expert on ‘getting his’ it’s Melo.

ha, that’s about perfect right there…

This is a very interesting difference between a Thib’s-coached team and some other teams:

‘LeBron James had 10 points on 3-of-11 shooting along with nine assists and five rebounds. Anthony Davis and Austin Reaves scored 13 points apiece. All three players did not see action during the fourth quarter as the Lakers trailed by 27 after three.’

I mean, we were ‘only’ down 15 at the end of the third, but was Thibs going to pull the starters? Even if it was 27?

Also, on the Cam-cast, here’s the latest on his 8 min, 0-1 game:

‘Cam Reddish was in the starting lineup but did not play in the second half due to knee soreness.’

Geo, Embarrassing Admission #37: I don’t know what professional kickball is like, but as a very young child, I struck out at kiddie kickball. That’s right, missed the ball three straight times as it rolled toward me.

Thank god for puberty, when I morphed into something very different.

oh no raven, you seem to have triggered my mind in to going back to junior high and high school sports…

i was decent physical specimen…unfortunately though sports happened waaaaay too fast for my mind to be able to slow down enough to really observe what was taking place…

i was pretty hard headed too…ended up getting kicked off the wrestling team and soccer team during high school…

stayed with track and field…there was enough of a relaxed environment that even i could stay with…

i remember showing up for team pictures crazy wasted my senior year, got this stupid grin in my face…

when i went to the prep school after high school it became very clear team sports were gonna be like a job…

switched to more chilled club sports like racquetball and then rugby…

got in to handball (that shits hurts so much, i still remember running my hands under hot water to try to swell them up a bit so it didn’t hurt my bones so much…

finally settled in on darts and foosball…

confession for me – i can get a little mouthy while competing 🙃

It’s wild to think that not only does Kyrie read this blog but he also takes offense at it and uses it for motivation. What a world we live in.

having trouble editing stuff in the phone, i’ll add though – probably the most fun sport i tried when i was younger was the orienteering stuff…

you get a map and compass and have to make your way over some terrain and collect whatever from different locations…

crazy fun sport done in groups of 2 or 3…

I mean people give Thibs shit about the minutes things but we got within 1 point with like 2 minutes left last night after being down almost 20.

If we win that game, that one game could be the difference between home court in the first round or not.

cyber must be happy that Queta got extended action in a Bucks blowout of the C’s…

    LOL! Exactly, perfect game! 😉

I don’t think “would keep his starters in down 27” goes on the right side of the pros and cons list for Thibs.

Not to mention down 27 vs down 15 is a fairly enormous difference.

In hindsight, I can see where maybe I might have gotten a little carried away.

You mean where you jinxed us, is that it? 😀

finally settled in on darts and foosball…

Foosball is great, i was kinda good when i used to play it. Darts not so much.

Definitely a difference between 27 and 15 but I believe we were down by 18 with less than 5 minutes left and then got it down to just 1.

Don’t blame Deuce! The reason the Knicks lost is because that ball-hog Doncic didn’t play, freeing Tim Hardaway jr to do what Tim Hardaway jr do.

Sorry Doogie. I really thought “gramatical “ must be misspelled. It looks incredibly wrong to me but I trusted my iPhone when it suggested that spelling n

    @KFNINJ: 🙂

Anyone else think that E is just dying (not literally, I hope!) to write about last night’s loss, and that the only reason (s)he isn’t doing so is because so many of us have said things about expecting him or her to come out of the woodwork (again, not literally, although that would be kind of cool!!!) today and they don’t want us to be correct?

Wow, you just read my mind! 😀

Edit: When i wrote this i wasn’t aware of DRed’s post about the same topic – mind readers! What were the odds?

This was one of the 4/5 games I thought we could lose. Still expect us to go 13-3 or 12-4 in January.

Preferring usually to put Positives higher than Negatives in the mix I’d say that despite the lazy start, mediocre D and bad luck I’m very satisfied for having at least a chance to get this game.
These mfkrs despite being outhustled they found a way to give themselves a chance for a win.
    And this means Mental Toughness.
    A nice lesson game imo

That is totally what E is doing. If we lose the next one he/she/they will be back. Oh I was sick but suddenly I feel better is this is why the Knicks suck!

Mazzulla pulled his starters at halftime last night. Granted it was a massive deficit and the second night of a back to back, but he could at least given them the 3rd quarter to see if they could make some kind of run.

    Pretty lame IMO

You know, I’m wondering if our streak of handily beating three teams in a row including Milwaukee was noticed around the league and Dallas came out strong because they didn’t want to be the fourth team in the sequence.

I wonder if E feels a slight tinge of satisfaction at being so present in this thread without having fired off a single post.

Haven’t seen anyone live rent free inside Knickerblogger’s head like this since Dogrufus…

Isaiah Hartenstein got a shout in Zach Lowe’s Ten Things this week. He was #5 and Lowe praised him for his defensive development.

Remarkably, Lowe didn’t mention OG Anunoby even once. Like, he seems to think Isaiah Hartenstein getting better at defense might have been years in the making, and that it didn’t just suddenly happen on the day we traded for OG.

    What a hater.

“There’s nothing fancy about [iHart’s defense]. It’s just nailing a dozen little decisions — of angles and timing — possession after possession. It requires hyper vigilance.”

Mazzulla pulled his starters at halftime last night.

This is a rational quitter mindset. Not quitting on any task when the odds of the possibility of success are not in your favor, – is the mindset of a winner. Love Thibs for this…fight till the end. I’d rather take a tiny tiny risk of injury then teach anyone that the smart move is to fold them.

If Randle boxes out and secures that rebound last night…we talk about Thibs and NY die-hard, never quit culture.

Remarkably, Lowe didn’t mention OG Anunoby even once.

Its always a multivariate analysis. OG is one of them. Zach just spoke about the top variance (i-Hart himself) that holds most weight when determining the likely hood of outcome. I dont think there is anything wrong with that.

Same when talking about Randle and his offensive play…Brunson is a significant variance but it’s rarely acknowledged.

man, E ain’t never been wrong a day in his life and he don’t need your pity about his poor outlook perspectives…

because – well, he’s never been wrong…it’s just one of them heads i win, tails they lose situations…

do though hope all is well with him…hopefully that lawyering stuff ain’t driving him too crazy…

I’m wondering if our streak of handily beating three teams in a row including Milwaukee was noticed around the league and Dallas came out strong because they didn’t want to be the fourth team in the sequence.

they were pretty physical too…like that was the message: hit first, hit hard…

I have a tough time believing the recent better defense can be attributed primarily to I-Hart.

Are we saying he suddenly became an all NBA level defender?

We just switched from RJ (who I believe is a negative defender) to someone that actually is an all NBA level defender and that leads the team in on/off since he showed up.

In public comments I-Hart even said that OG makes his life much easier.

I agree that it’s likely multiple things are going on, one of which is outstanding recent play by I-Hart, but I still think the primary reason is WAY more likely to be switching from RJ to OG than I-Hart.

“That is totally what E is doing. If we lose the next one he/she/they will be back. Oh I was sick but suddenly I feel better is this is why the Knicks suck!”

If we keep writing this after every loss, maybe (s)he will never come back!

I think the addition of OG was a necessary, but not sufficient condition of iHart emerging as a strong defensive anchor. OG unlocks his potential defensively, but that potential had to be created through his own development.

I don’t think it’s the case that adding OG just turns any generic center into All-Defensive team material.

    Spot on, sir.

Are we saying he suddenly became an all NBA level defender?

No, he was always an All-NBA capable defender but he wasn’t in a position to be succesfully show his defensive acumen because of RJ. Also, knowing that he won’t be yanked for a coverage lapse/mistake has allowed him to just react and trust his insticts more.

For the first time in his professional life, he’s put in a position to allow his defensive talents to flourish. Thank you Mr. Rosas. Promotion to GM is well deserved. Perry was all right, but he’s not real.

The NBA is such a hyper-athletic place — you always hear about how someone waits until his defender just ‘leans’ in the wrong direction before taking advantage and blowing by him.

To me that’s a big difference for iHart. He’s no longer constantly ‘leaning’ the wrong way (or taking steps away from his primary assignment) to make up for someone else’s mistakes or failures. So instead of ending the play flailing helplessly at someone dunking the ball or even fouling that person, he’s there to meet them at the rim and reject their ass.

He’s doing it, though, which means he knows how to play defense and can play it at a high level. Being at the right place at the right time. Which is the difference between him and say Sims, who probably has equal or even more tools (a little less height but more agile and quick-footed and a jumpin’ fool), but isn’t often where he should be.

Its always a multivariate analysis. OG is one of them. Zach just spoke about the top variance (i-Hart himself) that holds most weight when determining the likely hood of outcome. I dont think there is anything wrong with that.

Of course you’re right but when another poster here did the same thing recently the outcry was pretty intense.

“Anyone else think that E is just dying (not literally, I hope!) to write about last night’s loss, and that the only reason (s)he isn’t doing so is because so many of us have said things about expecting him or her to come out of the woodwork (again, not literally, although that would be kind of cool!!!) today and they don’t want us to be correct?”

There is no doubt in my mind that is what’s happening. I think whenever E returns it will have to be under yet another new name.

No, he was always an All-NBA capable defender but he wasn’t in a position to be succesfully show his defensive acumen because of RJ.

We are going to have to agree to disagree.

I love I-Hart. I’m on I-Hart all around > Mitch train, but I don’t think he’s all NBA defense. He’s had some big impact blocks lately and he’s cleaning up on the boards. It has been a great run. But I think calling him all NBA defense is similar to thinking we can compete with Boston or go 16-0 this month. 😉 It’s a little too exuberant for me.

Anyone read the dear New York piece by IQ linked at the top? Man, losing him hurts a ton. He was home grown and just a ton of fun to watch, so easy to root for.
I’m happy with what we have and the trade makes sense for everyone — IQ gets paid and more PT, and DDV and grimes now get more regular minutes and are shining. Still tough to lose such a gem though.

Sure, we can agree to disagree. However, just so that we’re clear, – I said “All-NBA Capable Defender” – it’s on him if he lives up to his talent. Lastly, I think Mitch is also an All-NBA capable defender and his office space also cleaned up with OG addition/RJ deletion.

Not a whole lot you can takeaway from that game. Kyrie-I mean, what can you really do? He’s a great player when he’s not being an asshole. Letting Tim score 32s much more egregious

TBH it hurts a lot more that RJ Barret seems to have become the best scorer in the NBA overnight. The stretch he’s had since departing is better than any he’s ever had for us, and has lasted longer. I’m legit concerned that he was actually good all along, and we’ve given TOR the franchise cornerstones they’ll need to torture us for the next 10 seasons.

Relax, RJ has had 3 good games in a row. The previous 2 games he scored 14 pts each game.

Even his last 2 games he’s had great efficiency but he “only” scored 23 and 24 pts so not exactly leading the league in scoring over the past week.

For those interested in games last night that sucked even more than ours (of which there were, amazingly, many):

“If the Thunder stopped scoring with 11:03 left in the third quarter, they would have won 78-77. Blazers rookie Scoot Henderson was a minus-56 in 31 minutes.”

Relax, RJ has had 3 good games in a row. The previous 2 games he scored 14 pts each game.

Did RJ ever have 3 good games in a row for us? Maybe, but I don’t remember the last time it happened. Out of 6 games for TOR he’s shot 50% or better 5 times. In 26 games for us he shot 50% or better 7 times.

Even his last 2 games he’s had great efficiency but he “only” scored 23 and 24 pts so not exactly leading the league in scoring over the past week.

Did he ever put up 70% TS over 6 games for us? I doubt it, which indicates this stretch is either an incredibly unlikely run of luck or a sign of significantly improved production going forward.

From a pure “scoring” viewpoint he did this from dec 9th to dec 23rd 2022 (last season):

    26, 27, 22, 27, 24, 18, 30 (11-19 FG), 44 (14-20 FG including 6-6 3FG).

27.2 PPG over 8 games, with the 2nd higher scoring output of his career mixed in*, but with less efficiency.

Then he had a bad game on Christmas day and the next one he injured his hand in Dallas after 1:36.

We have seen this before, it’s up to him to show it’s not another fluke (I’ll be happy for him if he does it).

    * His career high is 46 in 21-22, in a loss against Miami.

Just to start this year, RJ scored 24, 26, 18, 16, (out two games) 26, 24, and 24 points (22.6 avg) on 48.6% shooting with 50% from three (20-40).

RJ is FAMOUS for brief hot streaks. He’s turned the corner! And then he face-plants into that lamp post…

Maybe this time it’ll be longer/better. It is a different situation. Time will tell.

It may turn out that RJ becomes the best player in this deal, but without the luxury of hindsight, it made sense in the present. Not a steal or anything, just a good calculated risk. Once it’s done, it’s done.

Toronto’s continental climate enjoys lower barometric pressure in the winter than New York’s more humid coastal conditions, which probably fixed RJ’s migraines.

I’m waiting another 10 games to see if RJ maintains his sudden leaps in scoring efficiency and 3PT%.

How do you give up 75 points in a half to the fucking Bulls? The Warriors need to make some real changes

“Toronto’s continental climate enjoys lower barometric pressure in the winter than New York’s more humid coastal conditions, which probably fixed RJ’s migraines.”

Glad you are not a science educator.

Pacers offense seems to run perfectly fine without hali or the Hawks are that bad on defense…

    Dejounte is playing well

I thought the Pacers would feel Hali’s absence but they keep scoring 30 points per quarter somehow.

Edit: just saw the comment above.

Maybe its the system > hali hmm..

Obviously need a larger sample size but its something to watch

The Pacers are shooting 68% from the field and 61% from three tonight. I guess they don’t need to play defense!

EDIT: Murray is scoring well, but I can’t imagine he’s playing very good defense.

Bane left the game tonight with a sprained ankle, if he’s out tomorrow might as well rest Brunson.

The Bulls fans booing a widow to tears at halftime seems to have not worked well for their team

RJ like an alcoholic who tried to do dry january and tonight he’s on a bender making up for lost time.

Can I get an rj update?

If you thought he had turned a corner…

It’s not only the 0-7 in the half. The defense has been so bad.

IQ, on the other hand, has 13 in 8 true shots, but a team worse -17. Playing with the starters is not as easy for your plus minus it seems.

What do the Warriors do now? Go for another win now trade? Blow it up? Stand pat and pray for a miracle? They seem really stuck.

They have curry and draymomd coming back will help if he actually stays on the court

You can’t waste the rest of curry good years so they will make a win now trade

Yeah, holy shit, tomorrow night is going to be nuts with the Grizzlies lineup. You could contend for a title with their IL. It’s hilarious.

You gotta put RJ in at the end of the game so he can get his garbahhge time pointzz when nobody is trying to play defense anymore
