The Halliburton takeover of Team USA gained steam in the first half.
Hard to be mad. Brunson is still an important piece of the team, he’s just not the best int’l PG on the roster.
I would imagine he continues to start. It keeps the Halliburton-Reaves partnership together off the bench (their synergy is strong). But Halli is probably going to close.
Great response, JK. Pretty much aligned with what I thought. I’d add that it seems likeguys like Beck, Prince, Hendrix, etc. have the gift of putting “voice” and impossible speed/technique together, while having great voice is possible even for less technically gifted players…say, David Gilmour. And to the untrained ear, a copy can seem virtually identical to the original because it “hits the frets” and gets enough of a percentage of the “voice”, whereas a professional at your level can hear subtle differences that reveal the shortcomings of the copy.
Owen, that must have been fun! Greece is definitely on the bucket list…FIBA or no FIBA!
the mix between brunson hali and reaves is going to be context dependent. all three have played really well. the biggest problem with the starting lineup has been ingram, who has been oddly terrible on both ends so far. that plus the fact that he and mikal both play small and have gotten pushed around a bit.
It is fun. Also extremely hot. And dinner with the cousins lasts longer than an NBA playoff series.
Are these games being televised? Where?
watching the game now, second qtr 6:30 left…
it looks like the whole second unit is out performing the first unit…hali, reaves, banchero…
I don’t know, these other teams play well together…
Didn’t watch but Brunson’s offensive stats don’t look far off from Hali’s
Wouldn’t surprise me if Hali’s run & gun style is more favorable in FIBA than Brunson’s mid-post/iso game, especially with the huge teammate/athletic advantage of USA
Also, USA is running All-Stars off their bench (or fake all-stars if you’re Wally), other nations might have a few stars starting, maybe even 5 NBA starters, but their bench is usually full of guys who barely register on NBA scouting lists. Whoever plays the 2nd unit should look better than the starters. The USA isn’t just talented, it’s deep.
if the usa is up, leave brunson in longer…he controls the offense well…
I don’t know exactly how – but I am still consistently surprised by how well austin reaves plays basketball…
where did this guy come from 👽
the games are on ESPN+ or ESPN 2…
I think our strategy is for our starting 5 to play even or slightly up but then our 2nd unit should be able to dominate as EB pointed out…the rest of the squads get thin after the first 7 dudes…
The FIBA officiating really negates our quickness (which I think is our biggest advantage)…they don’t call holds or blocking very much (except on us)…I really dislike the way they call the games…but whatever…our roster construction is awkward…not many big bodies…I think Portis might need to get out there more when we move on as someone who can grab boards…
you’re right Geo…the other teams seem to play more cohesively but that is usually the deal since we slap the team together a month before the tourney…
finally…in the new era of not replying to stoopid stuff…I’ll leave the backhanded swipe at David Gilmour alone…
I wonder who will be added to the roster for the olympics…
julius, booker, maybe lillard, fox, butler, tatum, brown…
I can’t think of a lot of good usa big men…
I thought I heard an announcer say this was an “invitation only” roster…
can they do that for the olympics?
Obviously, having the technical ability to shred, tap like EVH, pick like a bluegrass guy etc… is a skill that not everyone can achieve, but if you scan Youtube, you’ll find 10s of thousands of guitarists than can do other worldly technical things like that, including some really young players. What you won’t find is a lot of guitarists with the note selection, phrasing, timing, feel, superior bending technique, vibrato, pick harmonics, use of the vibrato bar and feedback etc… that creates something that’s musically truly memorable. I like speed, especially in small bursts as a solo picks up steam, but I’ll take the other skills WAY over just pure speed.
Wouldn’t surprise to see Walker Kessler being a big part of USA basketball in the near future, maybe we’ll just go small but he’s the future of USA size. Also, Bam.
Looking at some other rosters…
Lithuania has Knick legends Rokas, Mindy, and Iggy… They are now my favorite team… bad news is Rokas went 0-6 from the field against Egypt
Markataneraneran tried his best for Finland but Australia is a powerhouse…
Weird Australia didn’t use Dyson Daniels much, maybe just the lack of shooting with Giddey & Thybulle already out there
Argentina didn’t make the cut so Luca Vildoza will not be available
China has 4 starters over 6’9″ and a 6’5″ PG. That’s bound to give some teams trouble, too bad they all suck
Jean Montero had an underwhelming performance for the DR. Jordan Clarkson almost beat them for the hometown(-country?) Philippines
España is playing Santi Aldama off the bench instead of starting. They have 3 guys from Real Madrid, so maybe they’re going for established synergy a la that Detroit Pistons + LBJ all-star game…
I didn’t think it was a swipe at Gilmour, actually quite the contrary. He’s a special guitarist despite the lack of blinding chops because he’s great at other stuff, like note selection, phrasing, tone, etc
I love Gilmour
well done EB…thank you…
any upcoming matches you’re looking forward to?
That’s correct, JK, Gilmour is ultra creative and meticulous and I’m a huge fan. pepper, u buggin…
Oops…I get defensive on perceived Floyd slights….nevermind…
Btw zman…I was listening to some Neil Young yesterday…specifically the song Old King….an ode to his pup…thought of your predicament
Richard Thompson might be my submission for best overall guitarist, though thankfully, unlike NBA there are no apples to apples comparisons. Thompson is able to play melodies and accompaniments at the same time. He plays deep arrangements. The solo on “The Great Valerio” comes to mind. He also rips the shit out of single note leads. He can play hard and fast but also, like Gilmore, he can put a melody in your head that you can’t forget.
SO YOU’RE SAYING HE MIGHT BE AVAILABLE?
Speaking of guitar: I’ve been enjoying the new Far Caspian album- a sneaky good guitar album with nary a traditional lead (and barely anything in the way of effects beyond occasional distortion). Great arrangements/textures trump solos for me- love the guitar on the title track for instance. I’ll take Jonny Greenwood over Clapton all day every day.
Along those lines here’s a hot take for you- Prince: Musicianship can’t be questioned but as a LEAD guitarist? Boring (except for the fact he’s playing great Prince tunes!) Nothing to distinguish him between guys like Neil Schon or Slash- a few high bends to signify emotion (and all three have good-Schon to great-Prince tone and vibrato) but all are so predictable- a few of those bends followed by boilerplate shred, rinse and repeat ad infinitum. Again just talking about his leads- lots of great rhythm and interesting parts throughout- just find Prince boring when he stretches out- the While My Guitar Gently Weeps solo that everyone is crazy about wouldn’t be in my top 500 solos.
Haven’t gotten that far. Pretty much all my thoughts on FIBA are in this thread already, lol
Well…he made it on this list
https://www.guitarplayer.com/news/the-greatest-guitar-solos-of-all-time
Looks like PJ Washington is one of the first free agents to feel the austerity crunch. 3/$48 million to return to Charlotte.
Yeah, Brunson had a strong 2nd half. (I posted at halftime.)
that’s a really cool list…I don’t have near the capability to appreciate music to the detail described there…I really enjoy though reading/hearing others break down the components of the whole thing…
man, when I wore a younger man’s clothes I used to love to work out to free bird…so much energy there…
I remember watching some “unplugged” performance by stevie ray vaughn, it was Pride and Joy…it was the most perfect playing I’d ever heard, and definitely the first time I ever thought to myself – damn, that shit sounds absolutely perfect…
it was just him, on a stool with that guitar with a million strings on it…
I don’t really care for the “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” performance, but Prince plays all sorts of great lead stuff all over the Purple Rain album. So many great licks on that album.
I’m going to once again stan for Blake Mills, who has made hands down the best guitar record of the year, Jelly Road. I love the long outro solo on this tune, it’s a tour de force of unconventional and imaginative playing, and incredible tone.

a while ago I watched this Chicago doc…
Beginnings is one of my favorite songs, of all songs…
Terry Kath had such an unbelievable voice, I hadn’t noticed he also played guitar…
sure enough Terry is playing away on stage here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pizRRft3_8Y
pepper thx, I’m still a blubbering mess but busy weekend so powering through. I play and sing lots of Neil Young standards, but probably couldn’t get through that w/o choking up. And that line in Mr. Bojangles has always gotten me…now, forget it!
I caught up with New Zealand USA just now. One thing I noticed relevant to this year’s Knicks was that at one point Hart was playing the four or the five. He still got rebounds, which was good. But sometimes New Zealand got a big man matched up with him in the post and then he was too short to prevent the guy from getting a good shot off.
Two of my favorite solos are Reelin in the Years and Feels So Good. They don’t exactly fit into what I’ve been saying I like, but imo they are both great solos.
Clapton is a solid guitarist, but imo he’s overrated, as are most of the early rock guitarists. They took the influence of the older blues guys to a new level, got their deserved accolades, but loads of guitarists then took their influence and surpassed them. I say that as someone that loves Clapton’s music.
The guys I like better are the major pentatonic guys like Dickie Betts and multiple guys from Leonard Skynard. That sweeter southern rock sound can be killer good when they move in out of the major and minor well.
I’m going to put Gary Moore high on my list also. I haven’t listened to enough of his music to say he’s consistently great, but some of his peak solos combine excellent note selection with blinding speed in a way that makes sense to me as opposed to someone that plays fast just because he can.
A lot of my favorite players, and the ones I look to emulate most, are great “song” players, guys who add magic to arrangements and make me feel something. Players in this category, to me, are guys like Lindsey Buckingham, George Harrison, Johnny Marr, Rick Nielsen, Mick Ronson, Larry Carlton, Johnny Greenwood, David Gilmour, Curtis Mayfield…
Those guys aren’t all great soloists, although some of them are, but those are the guys I try to pattern myself after, because that’s the kind of guitar playing that moves me the most.
I geek out on a lot of guitar things that most people probably wouldn’t find super amazing, rhythm guitar parts and tasteful little overdubs and stuff like that. Some of my favorite playing ever is Larry Carlton’s guitar on “Help Me” by Joni Mitchell. He’s playing these beautiful chiming chords throughout, really tastefully voiced inversions of the already jazzy chords that Joni is playing on acoustic guitar. Sometimes those ringing chords spin off into little melodic moments, always just the right amount to fill the spaces in the song. It’s just a beautiful part, totally makes the song.
I love a great burning guitar solo as much as the next guy, but the kind of selfless, empathetic playing that Carlton does on “Help Me” is my guiding light.

holy cow, ya’ll don’t know nothing but deep cuts…
i’ve listened to steely dan most of my life…i swear i never really considered them in terms of guitar play…never even came to mind…
i still remember someone remarking on the drum ending for Aja, now i’m gonna need to re-listen to a bunch of steely dan listening for guitar stuff…
Katy Lied (1975)
The Royal Scam (1976)
Aja (1977)
Gaucho (1980)
i’ll be honest, just re-listened to kid charlemagne, and i still can’t hear it…don’t take me alive is a little easier to focus on…
Steely Dan probably has as many iconic guitar solos (by a number of different guys) in its catalog as most guitar heroes do in theirs. Just listened to My Old School and Skunk Baxter absolutely nails it. Incredible touch. Another guy with great touch among lead players is Billy Gibbons- he might be my favorite of the blues rock guys- Jesus Just Left Chicago has one of my all-time favorite solos.
