Didn’t watch yesterday’s US vs Germany game, but there seemed to be a lot of pro-Hali, anti-Brunson sentiment on Twitter regarding our best possible lineups. (Factoring in that Edwards is our best player and should just be fed as much as possible.)

OKC has finally started culling its roster—they just cut TyTy Washington—given its embarrassment of riches. We should grab a free first rounder while we still can!

Thanks, Z–Man. Interesting. It was nice to hear someone lauding RJ’s defensive abilities, considering that every time I look it seems he’s getting turnstiled. Perhaps I just notice the gaffes and not the regular good play. I also noticed the hedges off his weak side match-ups in the video correspond a lot to my feeling like he’s ball-watching, when it’s actually that he’s more or less doing what he’s supposed to (he’s standing around in space).

So I guess if he just develops a right hand and learns to shoot, he’ll be good. A smaller mountain to climb, perhaps…

The Thunder also just waived Usman Garuba, who would be a perfectly cromulent backup PF. Start poaching Leon!

I like TyTy more than Garuba overall, but would be happy with a flyer on either.

I doubt we entertain the TyTy idea since we’re already so deep at the guard spots, but man he must be wondering what more he could’ve done. He put up 26.6/6.6/7.6 in the G-League!

    From Marc Stein’s substack:

I do believe that the Knicks and Heat are among the teams monitoring the situation because they would wish to be at the front of the line if Embiid did ask out.

Both Knicks president Leon Rose and his top aide William Wesley were at Embiid’s recent wedding and, while true that Rose and Wesley used to represent Embiid as player agents, it has been suggested that their attendance was “not nothing.”

Heat star Jimmy Butler, meanwhile, remains close to Embiid in the wake of their mere six-ish months as teammates together in Philadelphia.

    However …

There was some speculation around here that Butler and Embiid have a bad relationship, and we should thus be Embiid-skeptical. Guess we can safely put the kibosh on all that.

    Finish the job, Leon.

It’d be nice to take a couple of flyers on players who are reclamation projects with first round pedigree with our last few roster spots but Leon likes to give those slots to no-hopers who will never under any circumstances ever play a meaningful NBA minute.

Usman did shoot 40.7% from three last year, admittedly not a huge sample size. But an interesting option for “Go stand in the corner, Obi!”

On the other hand, Garuba’s agent is Leon’s son, and nepotism is a big part of what we do around here…

“The Thunder also just waived Usman Garuba…”

lol yet another 2021 draft pick actually incinerated…

If we buy the idea that RJ’s defense isn’t quite that bad, we have to explain why the team is consistently so much worse when he’s on the court. Some of it is his lack of scoring efficiency, but that can’t be all of it.

If we buy the idea that RJ’s defense isn’t quite that bad

Count me out. Not buying any of it.

    Of course!

re: RJ’s defense, Thibs defended RJ (npi) in this NYP article way back in February:

“Quite honestly, I look at some of those numbers and they’re meaningless to me,” Thibodeau said. “I haven’t seen a good ratings system yet defensively, and I think I’ve studied it pretty hard for a long time. I don’t buy into it the way some people treat it as gospel. You ask them what does it mean, and they can’t explain it….The way it works, defensively, it’s five guys working together, and the people that are tracking things, there’s no context to it,” he said. “You don’t know whose responsibility it is to switch, you don’t know whose responsibility it is to show, you don’t know if there is a responsibility to stay down. You don’t know any of that.”

This is why it kind of bugs me when folks suggest that RJ is a terrible defensive player. I agree that he’s far from a DPOY candidate, but Thibs is not playing someone who is an obvious defensive detriment unless it’s a guy like Brunson who more than makes up for it on the offensive end and as a leader.

On that note, Brunson’s defense was apparently the reason why he got so much criticism about yesterday’s game. Apparently Schroder and the other Germany guard were scoring at will against him.

    I’m just catching up.

I was away at Saratoga racetrack for most of the weekend.

My comparison between RJ and Butler was never that RJ was going to become as good as Butler. That’s a fantasy scenario.

Coming into last season, RJ mentioned in an interview that Butler is very efficient without being a particularly good 3 point shooter. So last off season instead of putting a lot of energy into improving his 3 point shooting (like most would have thought he would or should), he put his energy into being more efficient finishing and shooting right around the rim the same way Butler does. That’s the only point I was making. He was essentially saying, “Even if I never become a great outside shooter, there is a path to higher efficiency if I can get better at the things Jimmy Butler does well”.

He did in fact improve his efficiency very significantly in that area. The problem was he also took a step back shooting 3s other longer mid range and other 2s.

He hasn’t said anything about what he’s been working on this off season other than what the shooting coach said and what we saw from a single workout.

Count me out. Not buying any of it.

    Neither do I.

I like watching game film of some plays and looking at the available stats, but if a team is consistently much worse when you are on the court, something is amiss that you have to explain or it’s you.

Line up combinations, who the bench/replacement player is when you are out, and noise can all contribute, but when you are seeing the same things over years, something is wrong.

We weren’t a very good defensive team, ranking 19th overall, despite the fact that we have several players who are supposed to be good defenders and a coach who is supposed to be a defensive genius. So something ain’t working right.

We weren’t a very good defensive team, ranking 19th overall, despite the fact that we have several players who are supposed to be good defenders and a coach who is supposed to be a defensive genius. So something ain’t working right.

You can get away 1 bad defender in a lineup as long as there are a couple of plus defenders and you play good team defense, but things seem to compound in a negative way when there is more than one bad defender. minus 1 + minus 1 = minus 3.

Brunson, RJ, and Randle are not good defensive players.

Brunson at least tries hard, but RJ and Randle seem very inconsistent to me.

There’s only so much Mitch can do to cover all the mistakes while Grimes is holding his own on the perimeter. But we saw how important the presence of those two was as various points last season.

This and spacing is why I still question having RJ and Randle on the same team. Brunson is staying because he’s so good in every other way. IMO RJ and Randle don’t fit. That’s why I’ve been so hot for OG Anunoby.

It looks like we are going to get at least one more year to see what RJ can improve on.

I don’t put much stock in overall offensive and defensive ratings. For me, it comes down to whether you can score points and get stops situationally.

I don’t think the fact that they had the 3rd best ORtg says anything great about our coach or players on that end any more than I think having the 19th best DRtg says anything bad about their coach or players on that end. Seems that once they benched Rose, Fournier and Cam…and especially after they acquired JHart…their defense was just fine. And imho losing to the Heat in the playoffs had WAY more to do with their offense than their defense, except perhaps for Brunson who was continually targeted by the Heat.

PS I know Brunson draws lots of offensive fouls, but that is not an indication that he is a good defender. In fact, it is often a bail-out for players who are physically overmatched.

Seems to me that every possession is “situational.” If you’re behind by 10 at the start of the fourth quarter because you played shitty defense for three quarters, you now have to outscore your opponent by a point per minute to win the game.

I get that there are higher leverage possessions at the end of games, but, y’know… the leverage works in your favor if you’re going into those crunch time moments with a lead instead of a deficit.

If anything I’d say our offensive rating and defensive rating is skewed by aggressively pursuing offensive boards, which creates benefits for the offense at the expense of the defense.

“If anything I’d say our offensive rating and defensive rating is skewed by aggressively pursuing offensive boards, which creates benefits for the offense at the expense of the defense.”

I agree with this, and it was pointed out somewhere that Spo took advantage of this tendency right off the bat by boxing out well and then having Love throw long outlet passes.

I disagree with the notion that all possessions being “situational” validates ORtg and DRtg as foolproof indicators of proficiency on either side of the ball, except maybe at the extremes. There’s all kinds of noise that influences these overall ratings…injury, lineup decisions, random hot/cold streaks, etc. The difference between being ranked 19th and 10th is 1.0 PP100P. Pace factors in pretty heavily. So does the ebb and flow of games, and of the season.

Overall, the Knicks were 11th in points scored per game and 13th in points allowed per game. Those stats suggest that we were pretty good but not great on both sides of the ball. Which sounds pretty much in line with what I saw all year. Seems to me that the Knicks scored somewhat more often than not when they most needed to and got stops somewhat more often than not when they most needed to.

Lack of ball pressure was a problem for the Knicks for much of the year, but we’ll now have a full season of Josh Hart and DDV, who are both pretty good at pressuring the ball and getting steals. We’re still lacking length at the wing position, which makes it tougher to disrupt passing lanes.

In general last year it seemed like we did pretty good at rotating and contesting shots, but the lack of length and ball pressure allowed opposing offensive players to get to their spots too easily. And our inability to generate turnovers canceled out a lot of our own ability to limit turnovers when we had the ball.

Should be interesting to see if Hart/DDV can move the needle at all in these areas.

On the other hand, Garuba’s agent is Leon’s son, and nepotism is a big part of what we do around here…

He is a good rebounder and defender, and would fit right away in a role from the bench.

I am definitely in the camp that RJ will not improve to justify his salary, and I am even more skeptical of him being effective at the 4. I would rather have a true backup for Randle.

“Lack of ball pressure was a problem for the Knicks for much of the year”

To a degree, but it is also by design that Thibs prefers keeping players in front of you to jumping passing lanes. Similar to the way he chooses to utilize iHart on offense in a way that doesn’t highlight the strengths he showed in LAC. So it remains to be see if DDV and JHart will be turned loose in that way. Conversely, I’m not sure that RJ would get as few deflections as he does under a different coach/scheme. I believe we’ve already had this discussion, but I refer again to Fred Katz’s article from July 10 which stated:

“Unless an unassuming dribbler politely places the basketball into a defender’s hands, the New York Knicks do not want your turnovers. They say “no thank you” to steals and want no part of pick-sixes. Instead, they prefer that you miss a shot so they can return judiciously up the court with the ball in hand…Thibodeau’s teams are disciplined. They aim to cut off as many avenues to the basket as they can. At least during this last regular season, the defense was consistent in its morals: Whether it was forcing stop after stop or allowing make after make, it did not gun for takeaways. Steals that occur inorganically are not the Knicks’ thing, nor have they ever been under this coaching staff. Defenders don’t jolt into passing lanes, hoping for an interception but leaving a path to the hoop open as a result. The Knicks at their best are Darrelle Revis, not Antonio Cromartie….The Knicks defense was 25th in the NBA in turnover rate this past season, and the low number was by design…New York doesn’t gamble as some other teams do. It hasn’t risen above the league’s bottom 10 in turnover rate since Thibodeau took over.”

The article goes on to say that Thibs is not a rigid adherent to this philosophy, and that the addition of DDV and JHart might indeed prompt some change in this approach:

“They leaned into takeaways during their first-round playoff series against the Cleveland Cavaliers this past spring. It was one of the major reasons they ousted the Cavs in only five games….This season’s team could be even better equipped to disrupt….It will have a full season of Josh Hart, possibly the group’s best deflector, instead of just a couple of months of him, as it did last season, considering Hart arrived at the trade deadline….And it will have DiVincenzo, who swarms dribblers, cuts off passing lanes and knows when to get handsy.”

In summary, there is not purely an “inability” to generate turnovers when factoring the essentials of Thibs’ preferred schemes…but it’s possible that he prefers the schemes that he does with this team due to the defensive weaknesses of the personnel that you pointed out, e.g. not having elite length at the guard and forward spots. So your last point is ultimately very valid, since we might see the schemes themselves getting tweaked due to having excellent disruptors like DDV and JHart.

“It’d be nice to take a couple of flyers on players who are reclamation projects with first round pedigree with our last few roster spots but Leon likes to give those slots to no-hopers who will never under any circumstances ever play a meaningful NBA minute.”

I agree it’s kind of maddening….although I’m not sure if there’s much daylight between the Isaiah Roby’s, Jaylen Martins and Nate Knight’s of the world and the Usman Garuba’s and TyTy Washington’s.

I also thing that a bunch of these guys are going to shake loose due to:

    1) teams like OKC and HOU having too many picks to roster everyone they draft

    2) the new CBA squeezing players off of rosters due to first round pick rookie-scale salaries

Hope all the Angelenos are ok. Pictures of Dodgers Stadium are crazy. I guess they don’t call it Chavez’ Ravine for nothing.

If anything I’d say our offensive rating and defensive rating is skewed by aggressively pursuing offensive boards, which creates benefits for the offense at the expense of the defense.

    I agree.

This is similar to the old D’Antonio strategy of leaking defensive rebounders out to start the fast break sooner but giving up a few extra defensive rebounds. He’d get a few extra break away buckets but give up a few extra possessions. As long as the coach is tracking the “net” of what he’s doing and can make adjustments if it’s not working well against certain matchups, I’m fine with both strategies.

I’m not sure there are any magic formulas. There are tradeoffs to almost every defensive and offensive strategy. The best you can probably do is use the skills of the players you have on the team effectively and adjust against matchups when you can.

there seemed to be a lot of pro-Hali, anti-Brunson sentiment on Twitter regarding our best possible lineups. (Factoring in that Edwards is our best player and should just be fed as much as possible.)

It seems like Kerr really wants it to be Brunson but it’s going to have to be Halliburton. Brunson will still be important but

    1) Edwards is gonna be the man, which minimizes Brunson’s game

    2) Brunson’s defense is a real problem

    3) Halliburton is just better in the int’l format

Btw maybe Anthony Edwards is the guy we ultimately trade for. I hope he’s becoming fast friends w Jalen and Josh.

I initially figured this was just Dolan petulant litigiousness, but if MSG can actually back up its claims in this suit the Raptors could be in serious trouble.

I mean, it sounds like this employee literally emailed the Raptors proprietary information. Can’t do that! I imagine the questions of fact will boil down to what extent he was directed to do so by the Raptors organization.

Sounds quite a bit like the Astros-Cardinals hack of a few years ago (former employer sharing privileged data with new employer). I suppose the lawsuit raises the stakes. The Cards were docked two draft picks at the time.

The nice thing about the Mets throwing in the towel at the deadline is that I’m actually enjoying this nice little run with no pesky expectations to diminish the fun!

Here’s the Athletic article with a few more details. Sounds like a pretty serious accusation and I hope that if it’s true that Adam Silver comes down very hard on Toronto.

Maybe it’ll cost them 2 second round picks
