    Re: Marks – Contender.

I said that we would surpass Brooklyn and Miami to climb to the 5th seed, beat Cleveland and lose to Milwakee when Kyrie got traded to Dallas for a quarter water and a bag of Lays.

Knicks will average ~ 55 wins over next three years.

I get pessimism of the real fans who have been through a tragic 23 years of trauma. However, please cheer up – the NY Knicks are good again. Not great yet…but they’re really really good again. This season is going to be a lot of fun with a bunch of very likable and rootable kids on the team who will compete, play hard every night and at the end, – come up with a ton of Ws.

knicks received $15.074 million in luxury tax payments last year

I want Leon to run my life.

Another strong game from RJ yesterday. I’m still skeptical of how this translates against elite NBA athletes, but it’s still better to see him playing well than not playing well.

There’s probably some benefit for roster continuity, but really negligible compared to roster talent and depth. And let’s be real, we aren’t talking about a team that has been together for like a decade, it’s nice that we aren’t haphazardly churning but Brunson, JHart, iHart, and DDV have been here for a hot minute. Teams like the Bucks and Hawks have as much if not more roster continuity than we do. It’s really a silly basis for making bold predictions.

What the Knicks DO have is:
-continuity in coaching: Thibs is a proven veteran coach who has a system that has been in place or a while and whose players know how to run it. Philly, Boston, Atlanta and Toronto have all changed coaches in the last couple of years and Mazzulla is still a question mark. So is Bickerstaff in CLE…he got badly outcoached in the playoffs.
-On-court leadership by a star player: Brunson is the best combination of b-ball IQ, talent, and leadership that this team has had since, I dunno, maybe ever. The Knicks are his team, and will be for the next 5-10 years. And he is all about winning, very little ego and knows exactly who he is and what he can and can’t do. That resonates throughout the organization.
-Players that complement Brunson both on and off the court: JHart and DDV are steeped in the same ego-less “whatever it takes to win” culture as Brunson, and the three of them will set an example that will make any variance from that look bad. They will make Thibs’ job that much easier. While I do see some possibilities for problems here, esp if RJ or IQ start getting marginalized, for now it should be weighed heavily as a positive.
-Depth and flexibility: The rotation is 9 deep with quality NBA players, all of whom could start (or have already started) on a contender. Then the next 2 guys off the deep bench (Deuce and Sims) are solid in their roles and should make a short-term injury to any rotation player survivable.
-Playoff experience: there is really no substitute for this. As a young team with some roster and coaching continuity, I think the experience of last year was invaluable. And DDV only adds high-level playoff experience to the mix.
-Upside: It’s probably fair to assume that Brunson, Randle, Mitch, JHart, and DDV are at least at the 90th percentile of their ability and performance. But RJ, IQ, Grimes and even iHart all have considerable room to improve, especially with the competition for playing time and in IQ and Grimes’ case, for next contracts.
-Elite rebounding: while some here (one person, mainly) think of this as a moneyball gimmick, winning the possession battle is still a key to piling up regular season wins.
-An elite closer: Jalen Brunson potentially is the best player we’ve had in that role since at least Melo, and maybe since Clyde.

    Negatives:
    -Lack of top-20 level talent.
    -Coaching rigidity
-Poor playoff performances of Randle, IQ and Grimes, and to a degree, Mitch (he was awful vs. Miami) must be reversed
    -Lack of elite perimeter shooting
    -Vulnerability to elite size
-Brunson can be physically targeted on D

He has a completely different game but wasn’t Fournier dominating FIBA last year?

I think the attitude for just turned 23yo RJ is that FIBA gives him a low-stakes opportunity to put the stuff he’s working on with Drew Hanlon into real game action vs. NBA-level players under competitive pressure. There is no way to determine how any success he has in FIBA will actually translate, but successful reps under game pressure are very valuable and can’t be replicated in practice or even in preseason, so overall it’s reason for optimism.

The biggest negative for the Knicks is that Brunson had by far the best year of his career last year and Randle probably had his best year too. For players outside that 19-22 age range, those gains usually aren’t sustainable. If both those guys even go 50% back towards their career norms (i.e. still have one of the better years of their careers), the Knicks are a ~.500 team.

I get that there are reasons especially with Brunson to believe that this is real, and that mitigates the risk of his regression to some extent, but it’s still a hell of a lot greater than a 26 year old who’s been a borderline all-star for several years straight.

RJ is Melo of the FIBA.

Specifically, the shorter 3pt line improves his shooting percentage and his bulk size allows him to bully weaker players and poorer defenders at the rim to finish at a much higher rate.

Not sure how anything has/will change for him.

Latke, while I agree with you, this is a good problem to have. In Brunson we finally have the player that we are willing to hand the keys to. It necessarily comes with the risk it does not work out as we are effectively not hedging it.

“The biggest negative for the Knicks is that Brunson had by far the best year of his career last year and Randle probably had his best year too. If both those guys even go 50% back towards their career norms (i.e. still have one of the better years of their careers), the Knicks are a ~.500 team.”

I couldn’t disagree more. Brunson is doing pretty much what he was doing in Dallas during his last two years there, particularly in games he played without without Doncic. His TS% has been stable for the last 3 years. His 3pt% was higher and his 2pt% was lower, so those should balance out even with regression to the mean. There really wasn’s a single aspect of his game that suggested a strong risk of regression.

Randle is a bit more complicated, especially coming off of ankle surgery. But his stats last season are also very much in line with his career stats when he wasn’t “the guy.” He shot essentially his career average from 3 on a career high in 3PAr. His 2PT% was pretty much in line with his “non-the guy” years. And that has been a continual refrain here at KB…he is not suited to be the guy who the offense runs through.

Obviously regression is always possible, but if anything, I would guess that the Randle-Brunson partnership has more chance of improving than it does of regressing. This past year revealed that the team is really good as is, and has some untapped potential, including in that partnership. Even the Heatles took a year to figure it out. Having a full offseason after a playoff run will give these two a chance to learn from experience and to hit the ground running.

Latke, I agree that the risk of betting on a franchise player is always going to be there but they didn’t hand Brunson $300M.

They mitigated some of those on and off court spotlight risks by adding Rick Brunson to the staff for a helicopter Dad role. Thibs has his back. Leon is his Godfather. The support system is as good as it gets. Although, with his character, – I’m not even sure that its necessary.

I think we all may be saying the same thing, even while disagreeing. Brunson, Randle, and (to a limited extent) Thibs all exceeded individual expectations and as a result helped the team exceed expectations. For all his risk averseness, Leon has committed to those 3–of course given Brunson’s play and leadership, trading Randle’s back-up, and signing a Thib’s style player in DDV (in contrast to trading for Reddish last year). By definition that commitment means we have an increased risk if things don’t work out. But last season provided Leon with enough evidence that the risk is worth taking: for Brunson, can you be a productive leader without Luka and can you lead in the playoffs, for Julius, can you handle not being the number 1 option without melting down, for Thibs, if I give you your type of player (JHart) can you integrate him into the line-up.

I think latke is correct to worry about some potential regression with Brunson only because he was, well, insanely good last year. However I think there’s some low hanging fruit efficiency wise for him that could offset any regression–chucking more threes.

Brunson’s 4.9 3PA/36 was pretty low for a guy who hit 42% of them, and taking more would blunt a lot of the damage if he regresses to 37-39%. Only 58% of his threes were assisted, so it’s not like he’s relying on other guys to get these shots off in a way that would make you worry about a substantial efficiency decrease with more volume.

Kyrie is usually in the 7-8 3PA/36 range and that seems like a reasonable goal for Brunson. This would protect against regression in other areas, and if there’s no regression in other areas even better.

I’m a lot more worried about regression with regards to Randle. If his shot chart doesn’t change and he hits 31% instead of 34% of his threes we’re kind of right back in “arguably detrimental” territory.

He could theoretically offset the damage by taking more shots at the rim but for whatever reason he just doesn’t seem to want to do much of that anymore.

But it’s Julius Randle, so I won’t hazard a guess. You could tell me we all want him traded by January or that he’s on some MVP ballots and neither would particularly surprise me.

Another wild card is IQ. His overall numbers on the season belie that it was truly a tale of two seasons.

    First 30 games: 9.6 PPG, 4 RPG, 3 APG, 39/30/84 shooting splits

    Final 51 games: 18 PPG, 4.2 RPG, 3.7 APG, 47/40/81 shooting splits

If he simply doesn’t suck to start the season this time around, that could offset regression from other guys.

On the other hand, I personally am done with the whole “RJ could take a leap thing.” I hope he sucks less.

latke is doing a public service, because Brunson is determined to prove the doubters wrong… and that won’t work if there’s no doubters! 😉

I think any regression we see is WAY more likely to be statistical noise than actual regression to the mean except Hart’s 3p%. Randle needed someone to take some of the playmaking and scoring pressure off him relative to year we had no PG at all for much of the time. Brunson did that. Brunson and Randle are what we saw last year give or take noise.

The real issue for us is what I keep saying.

We have some likely internal upside from our younger players, but I think there are other teams with MORE internal upside via development and draft, others that may have done more in free agency/trade, and a couple that have several key players returning from injury. So we could have a better team but finish with a worse record on relative movement. It really depends on how much upside we get out of RJ, Grimes, Quick, and Mitch compared to what other teams will get and have done.

Kyrie got traded to Dallas for a quarter water and a bag of Lays

The unprotected Dallas 1st in 2029 that Brooklyn got for Kyrie is worth more than all the picks Leon acquired combined.

However I think there’s some low hanging fruit efficiency wise for him that could offset any regression–chucking more threes.

Here’s some more fruit for you…

There were 53 players with a USG of 25 or more last year and here are there FTr:

    https://stathead.com/sharing/YlP1z

Jalen Brunson is squarely in the middle, a smidge above Jordan Poole, not as good as RJ Barrett.

There’s a lot of room for growth there. It’s not like he doesn’t penetrate. He just hasn’t gotten respect from the refs yet.

EDIT: Jimmy Butler’s FTr is insane.

“I think latke is correct to worry about some potential regression with Brunson only because he was, well, insanely good last year.”

That’s the thing….he really wasn’t insanely good last year. If you look carefully at his stats compared to prior years and b) compared to other players who are actually insanely good, you can easily see that.

Brunson was excellent indeed, but “insanely good” only in relation to expectations for a player on his contract and who was being put into a new and more demanding role…a . There was ample evidence that he would be excellent in that role in both his overall stats and in the small but significant sample of games (both regular season and playoff games) that he played without Doncic. Nothing in his statistical profile screams outlier other than his 3pt%, and again, his 2pt% was actually lower than his career average, so that should be a wash, especially since as you point out, he’s not dependent on being a volume 3pt shooter. His FTr is also unlikely to regress, as it’s elevated mostly due to being on ball much more than he was in Dallas. I am very confident in banking on him being pretty much who he was last year, if not better.

“I’m a lot more worried about regression with regards to Randle. If his shot chart doesn’t change and he hits 31% instead of 34% of his threes we’re kind of right back in “arguably detrimental” territory.”

But again, Randle’s season doesn’t scream outlier in any regard. He is the midst of his prime, and last year he “regressed” only in terms of his role…he went back to being something other than a “point PF” and improved his shot selection and his turnover rate. Sure, any player can have an off year from 3….it’s the most volatile stat of all. But his career average is 34%, his Knicks average is 34%, and he shot 34% last year. His 2pt% of .553 last year is probably more suspect, but certainly in line with his most productive years pre-Knicks NOP and LAL years when he played with Jrue Holiday and a healthy Lonzo Ball, respectively.

So sure, it’s always fair to worry about regression, but Randle has been all-NBA in two of the last 3 years and really good in 4 of the last 6 years. It took a huge amount of character to overcome the MSG shitshow that was his 2021-22 season and the ire of the fans. Part of that was largely handing the reins of the team over to Brunson, something that his detractors at this time last year were highly skeptical about. There are way more reasons for having confidence that he is going to be excellent again next year than there are reasons to fear a significant regression to the point of being detrimental.

i myself was worried about something earlier today…

worried that Cocaine Bear 🐻 was gonna be way too stupid/silly to enjoy…

boy was I wrong…I am pretty high though, so maybe that helps…

so I say to you all – let go of your fears and worries…find joy in the present…

everything is gonna be all right…

“On the other hand, I personally am done with the whole “RJ could take a leap thing.” I hope he sucks less.”

Being done with players who have not played an NBA minute beyond age 22 is a big part of what we do here.

Being done with players who have not played an NBA minute beyond age 22 is a big part of what we do here.

Not what I said! Read it again.

I am done hoping he takes “a leap,” i.e. I am done hoping he becomes a star, or to be quite honest even a well above-average player. I am not factoring such possibilities into my projections for the 2023-2024 Knicks.

I am clearly holding out hope that he stops sucking though.

The unprotected Dallas 1st in 2029 that Brooklyn got for Kyrie is worth more than all the picks Leon acquired combined.

I agree its overall a better hall but he gave up K. Irving for that one pick.

OK. It’s friday, meet me half way, – will you?

    Leon Rose > Sean Marks + Dallas 2029 1RP

    You with me?

I’d be jazzed if RJ made it to 0 BPM this season.

In fact, that would be a “leap” in and of itself. That’s… maybe attainable?

Last off season RJ said he was going to model his game off Jimmy Butler. He worked on getting into the paint, short mid range, finishing, and getting to the FT line. He more or less accomplished most of that, but it came at the expense of his 3p% and other outside shooting which was neglected and terrible across the board.

If he can sustain what he accomplished last year and get the rest of his game back to average, he’ll be more efficient. If he can inch forward in some of those areas next year, he’ll start looking pretty good.

I’m more worried about him playing consistently high quality defense, his decision making, and his fit with Randle/Mitch long term. Spacing is still an issue with this starting lineup,

    One step at a time

but it’s still better to see him playing well than not playing well.

Amen. And it gives us something to talk aobut.

“Not what I said! Read it again.

Oh, my mistake…you don’t sound out on him at all!

howdy strat…it is so wonderful to hear you are at peace…

such a small thing and such a large blessing…

been thinking a bunch about your question, reference: triggers…

it’s really complex…I recorded a lot of stuff reference the anxiety: symptoms/dates/specific details for a couple of years…

this spring though the therapist hit me with perhaps I was doing a self fulfilling prophecy thing…

it was funny, daughter suggested something similar atound the same time…

so, I stopped paying attention to it for some months…

it may make no logical sense, however the data is what it is…it is happening…it is recurring in relatively consistent time patterns…

I actually think this whole weird cyclic anxiety stuff is tied to my immune system…other physical stuff goes wrong during those periods…

thank god i’m kind of past the phase of trying to worry out all the why’s of what’s happening…

my focus now is on mitigating the effects and trying to stay on course with healthy routines…

this last episode kicked off with me cleaning up my house and visualizing how I wanted everything, and what steps would be required to accomplish the goal…

the trigger is me…the future seems to be a particularly precarious place for me to spend time, that’s funny because i don’t like to visit the past much…

I am soooooooo in the present right now…it’s so weird…

sort of like work – was, fantasizing about the future is an easy way for me to push my adrenaline button…

got to lay off that adrenal juice…like chocolate – it’s a habit I can’t continue to live with…

Last off season RJ said he was going to model his game off Jimmy Butler.

    How’s that goink?

    How’s that goink?

If you mean being underwhelming during the regular season but good in the playoffs, it’s not entirely inaccurate. But otherwise, no.

“I’m going to try to play now like Good Player X” is really right up there with “He’s in the best shape of his career!” in terms of nice things to say that probably mean nothing.
