    How about underrated drummers?

This is from Journey before they started writing more popular tunes.

Aynsley Dunbar is on drums. I love his drum work on this one.

The song doesn’t pick up until about the 2 minute mark and then it becomes a free for all of Neil Schon, Aynsley Dunbar, and the keyboards. I’m not even sure who was playing which parts on the keyboard because they had two keyboard players at the time.

Strat, since again you never said rock only, I’d add in Omar Karim from yesterday, who I had honestly never heard of. But his smash-ass solo, along with the duet with Stanley, is pretty rock anyway. Plus he has Bobby Portis eyes, only with a demonic grin.

I’ll throw a second question out there. Rock only, given the question. What great rock songs have weird instruments (i.e., not the usual suspects)? Jethro Tull and the flute, for example. I imagine there some amazing trombone out there somewhere…

Baba O’Reilly has an out-of-tune violin solo featured prominently at the end of it.

Old Man has a nice banjo riff.

For Free ends with a clarinet solo.

Call Me Al features a penny whistle solo.

I don’t know if I’d call Good Vibrations a rock song, but Brian Wilson in his wildly creative days introduced the theremin and it kind of works.

About appreciating drummers, when I got my first kit and started learning way back in ’85 (at the tender age of 22), it soon changed how I looked at and appreciated drummers. Prior to that, I was impressed by fast rolls, etc., which actually aren’t that hard to learn and play unless playing at hardcore punk tempos.

However, when learning to actually play, the big challenge was integrating the kick drum beyond just playing quarter notes because that opens up all kinds of rhythms. And then later integrating the hi hat beyond just stomping on it in time with those quarter notes. So, from then on I always noted what drummers are doing with their feet about as much as their hands.

    Billy Joel sucks

Good Vibrations is perhaps the weirdest mainstream pop song ever made. I remember mansplaining to a girlfriend how Beach Boys were one of those rare bands that makes you forget you are listening to some musically transgressive shit, and when we worked from Today! to Pet Sounds to the sheer madness of Smile/Smiley Smile, her mind was blown. Didn’t realize how much weirdness is happening all over the place because the melodies are so sugary and easy to digest. Everything else around it teeters on the edge of madness.

For some bizarre reason my teenagers love Uptown Girl, and I thought it was just them because they are weirdos, but apparently there’s a whole generation of teenagers that love Uptown Girl because I heard them playing an Olivia Rodrigo song in the car and she was singing about loving Uptown Girl, and I just don’t understand the world at all anymore.

“Uptown Girl” has a billion Spotify streams. We talked about this on the podcast. I assumed those streams were from people playing it ironically, because it’s a song that so obviously sucks. But no, apparently!

When the conversation turns to underrated drummers, the first name I always throw out is Topper Headon.

    wow…just finished up the usa/portugal match…

to hell with those world rankings, portugal looked better than a 21st ranked team…

they played a really good game, great ball control…

needless to say – usa did not look like the best soccer team in the world…

I can’t even imagine them being favored over sweden…

I don’t know, if Alex Morgan can get a little more on target, Rodman gets more time on the pitch…they kind of look shook out there right now…

it was a pretty darn exciting match, I’ll say that…

what is it about ex-athletes becoming broadcasters…

so glad Mark Jackson is gone from my ear…although he’ll probably show up at nbatv…

it’s like they take even more joy from dogging the “home” team…or just dogging folks in general…

    hi cyber 🙂

did you get a chance to watch the game?

since we’re confessing stuff here now – I confess, harmonicas do it for me…

put a harmonica in your rock song, I’m probably gonna like it…

    Bernard Purdie
    Jaki Leibezeit
    Bun E Carlos
    Jim Gordon
    Earl Palmer
    Tommy Lee (fight me)

    Billy Joel sucks

I can’t describe the horror of growing up in Long Island and being the only person who knew this.

Inexplicably, though, I have always enjoyed Downeaster Alexa.

    hi cyber 🙂
did you get a chance to watch the game?

Hey Geo, no, i didn’t. I’m more of a nocturnal animal (LOL) to watch the Knicks, than i’m inclined to wake up early to watch the Women’s World Cup. But i was hoping for a good result, because US men are Portugal’s kryptonite, i thought we could be the same to the US women, to level the balance. 😉 We had no luck, the game was nearing the end and we managed to create a chance, but we hit the post. We were only a few inches from advancing to the knockout stage. We love moral wins around here, so maybe our women’s NT was only paying tribute to our tradition. 😀

Does steelpan count as a weird instrument? I love it on “Jane says” from Jane’s Addiction.

I always thought Kenny Aronoff was pretty good, but I know less about music than basketball.

put a harmonica in your rock song, I’m probably gonna like it…

When i think harmonicas i usually think of Neil Young… maybe “Hey Hey My My”. 🙂 And sometimes i think of Bruce Springsteen and “The River”. What a fantastic song!

When the conversation turns to underrated drummers, the first name I always throw out is Topper Headon.

I’m with you, and i bet ClashFan is too. 😉 😛

days are starting to blur more oft…finally gathered the courage to start testing my sugars…just wanted to get my nerves under control a little better first…

    i just don’t think i like admitting i’m ill…it’s like some psychological trip mine…

must be feeling sorry for myself at the moment – this is the harmonica in my mind…

honestly – there have been a lot of excellent use – everything always connects through the beatles and led zeppelin…

i need to look at the songs origins – but, i’m guessing when the levee breaks is inspired by some earlier blues song…

i don’t know, maybe robert plant just looked so damn cool playing it…

Mets fans I am randomly in a twitter group chat with a few of the baseball prospectus prospects folks and they love the kids the Mets have traded for.

the game was nearing the end and we managed to create a chance, but we hit the post. We were only a few inches from advancing to the knockout stage.

portugal played well, they had the usa running all over the field…they got a really tough group draw with the nederlands and usa…

women’s international sports competitions continue to evolve…

very cool to see the wnba ladies starting a 3 on 3 league…

Yeah you have to like the Verlander trade. Drew Gilbert is the Mets’ top prospect now and is close to MLB, looks like he could stick in CF and would be a plus defender in either corner. The other prospect in that trade Ryan Clifford can really mash but is not much of a defender, he’s a 45 FV prospect and should rank in the Mets’ top 10.

Eppler is not my favorite GM but he correctly sussed this out as a seller’s market and has really stocked the farm system nicely.

I am not much of an evaluator of minor league talent, but it seems like the Mets are getting nice returns on their hired guns and their bloated contracts.

With Cohen’s massive wealth advantage, maybe the Mets should keep on overpaying for free agents and then selling them at the trade deadline for prospects. Having a solid but spotty roster at the MLB level and a stocked farm system is a nice position to be in.

Re: Billy Joel- He’s got a little too much saccharine in some of his songs like Uptown Girl…

but Downeaster Alexa, Allentown (“They threw an American flag in our face” gives me chills), Goodnight Saigon, and Captain Jack are some of my favorite songs from anyone

Cohen has gone from spending big bucks in an antique store to tossing most of what he bought and jumping into the nearest kiddie pool.

I love what the Mets are doing. They might very well now have 7 of the top 100 prospects in all of baseball when all the ratings get updated. Blue chip pitchers are in very short supply, nonexistent, really, but I’d guess that Cohen opens back up the checkbook this offseason for starting pitching.

Love the two prospects they got back. Missed on Gilbert in a dynasty draft when someone traded into the spot above us and took him.

    It’s a really nice return.

The Mets starting rotation right now is Senga, Quintana, and three days of rain.
    🙂

The lack of basketball news is making me a little crazy.

I need a FIBA fix badly.

during the broadcast on tbs today Ron Darling said the front office was checking on Juan Soto…

yes, the game seems to have passed Brian Cashman by…

What about pedal steel guitar? The Rolling Stones used it on Faraway Eyes, but that might count as a country song, not a rock song.

Case of You, and all the songs on Blue, prominently feature the Appalachian dulcimer. Not rock per se, but seeing as it was Prince’s favorite song, it should still count as a great use of an off-brand instrument.

Pedal steel pops up here and there in great songs. Dylan used it on Blood on the Tracks. Neil Young on Harvest. Elton John incorporated it at times. Jimmy Page too.

Same with the dobro, which is similarly used, and pops up when rock songs want a folkier feel.

John Sebastian played the zither on Do You Believe in Magic and a few other Spoonful songs.

And Norwegian Wood may have a sitar, I think, because Harrison was into India, but I can’t be sure because I don’t like the Beatles.

As for drummers, the problem for me with knowing a good drummer when I hear one is that a drummer is only fully noticeable when he’s fucking a song up, and those takes usually aren’t used.

That said, my father-in-law played a lot with Ricky Lawson (he was on stage playing with him when Lawson suffered his fatal brain aneurysm mid-song(!), and from what he said, Lawson was the best to play with because of his precision, and his resume certainly backs that up. So I’ll nominate Ricky Lawson to replace Tommy Lee on JK’s list since nobody else is fighting him:)
