“Julius could of not been more nice to all the kids.”

That is a nice story, but horrifically bad grammar. How could people in this day and age (especially those who take it upon themselves to post to the general public) *not* know that it is “could have,” not “could of”? Lordy.

How could people in this day and age (especially those who take it upon themselves to post to the general public) *not* know that it is “could have,” not “could of”? Lordy.

People tend to speak in contractions even when it’s not necessarily correct. Could’ve is “could have” but it sounds like “could of”. So in their minds it’s “could of”. There are other errors just like that. My grammar and writing skills are not a strength. I can’t criticize, but that’s a bad one.

Ok since it looks like another slow day on K-blogger, I’m going to introduce a new music discussion.

I’m a lifelong keyboard player, so how about greatest keyboard solos? I don’t have any specific ones in mind, but I will say anything by Bruce Hornsby or Chuck Leavell stands out to me (btw there’s a great doc about Leavell called “Chuck Leavell: The Tree Man, highly recommend)

    Let the games begin!

As a keyboard player, I refuse to concede there is such a thing as a good keyboard solo. A good part, sure. Lots of classic riffs, intros, outros…but solos? Give those to the sax player.

Pizza Pete’s on Columbus between 85th and 86th is the single best slice in the city, full stop.

the best pizza in the city is actually in the williamsburg pizza corridor in brooklyn… probably the single best recent development in the city in the last decade….

30 year high school English teacher here. Yeah, when I read stuff like that I cringe a bit, but I wonder if that’s just an “English teacher thing” with me.

That case is not just a grammar issue — the diction in general is sloppy and overwritten. Also, it’s a bit of a logical exaggeration, too, to say that JR could not possibly have been nicer. Who knows, maybe he could be? Overwritten and sloppy. I’d suggest to the writer to be concise and use sharper/stronger vocabulary.

A much better sentence would be “Julius Randle was wonderful to all the kids,” or “Julius Randle was terrific to all the kids.” Etc.

I watched this last week, more than once, as it’s one of the more joyous musical experiences I’ve seen. And you know, the keyboard dude isn’t bad either. He’s got a few solo stretches, but it’s more fun watching them play with each other.

Freelance editor here… I didn’t click the link, but what you’re describing sounds like a transcription mistake (don’t get me started on AI transcriptions…) But I also wouldn’t be surprised if it was just terrible writing. I find errors in the NYTimes online all the time these days. It’s just the nature of churned-out online media.

Re: keyboard solos, it’s hard to top Garth Hudson overall. His live intro on Chest Fever is his most famous, but there are many other “riffs” as Rama points out, that are tremendous.

Keyboard solos in rock songs are, like drum solos, best avoided.

I’ll throw out a vote for Dr. Fink’s synth solo in “Head” by Prince though.

I also love George Duke’s Fender Rhodes solo in “Blessed Relief” by Frank Zappa, but that’s more in the jazz kind of space.

Garth Hudson’s piano solo in “Rag Mama Rag” by the Band is top notch.

Billy Preston in “Get Back” by The Beatles is iconic.

The piano playing on this by the great and under appreciated Aaron Embry blows my mind every time I see it. I know Aaron a little bit, he was on the scene here in LA back in the late 90’s, and was Elliott Smith’s touring keyboard player.

Great, great player and I think this counts as a “keyboard solo.” Enjoy.

    “Come on, jazz doesn’t count!”

Now one of my favorite lines. However, since we’re not just being music critics but also pedantic editors today, here’s the actual question:

“I’m a lifelong keyboard player, so how about greatest keyboard solos? “

including herbie hancock as an example of glorious piano play – is kind of cheating…

that’s an amazing clip raven…it wins with both the piano and sax highlighted…

enjoying the heck out of that clip…it’s funny – and stanley clarke is up on stage with them…holy cow…

ha, the first thought i had of piano and rock together was elton john too…

i collected a bunch of hornsby’s cd’s back in the day – don’t know though if i’d call that “rock” music…

funeral for a friend/loves lies bleeding is one of those songs you gotta be careful with with the speedometer when you’re driving…

    @Clash Fan:
Agreed. I focused on “could have”/”could of,” but a whole separate problem is of the type where people say “I could care less” when they actually mean “I could not care less.” Both of those types of error were visible in that one short statement.

With JB and iHart getting married last weekend, can’t help but wonder if a significant life event like marriage, first child etc…have a statistically material affect on the player’s upcoming season. Has there been any research/studies into this?

I understand that NBA players are way more professional than an average Joe like myself, but I became more career/skill focused when I got married and took on grad school right after my son was born. Just wondered if this is my experience only.

I find the term Jazz way too broad.

There’s some Jazz that makes me feel like I’m on some great new drug (really good Hot Club does that to me). There’s other jazz that’s obviously technically and musically very sophisticated, but it seems more like great musicians trying to impress other great musicians instead of trying to produce music that everyone is going to like.

I went to Boston U for my freshman year of college, and would often end up at parties with Berklee guys.

I remember one jazzbo kid saying “I just wrote this head that’s unplayable, I don’t think a human can play it.”

Uh, cool, bro. Might want to rethink your priorities there.

I think a lot about David Sancious, the original E Street Band piano player, who quit after two albums because he wanted to do jazz and Bruce was obviously going in a different direction. On the one hand, can’t blame a guy for following his passion, and he might have been consigning himself to a miserable life had he stayed. On the other, imagine being the guy who quit one of the most successful bands of all time right before its life-changing third album was recorded.

“With JB and iHart getting married last weekend, can’t help but wonder if a significant life event like marriage, first child etc…have a statistically material affect on the player’s upcoming season. Has there been any research/studies into this?”

That kind of makes it sound like they married each other…….which would be fine if that were the case (if not majorly unprecendented in many ways), but it’s not the case. Maybe “with JB and iHart *both* or *each* getting married…….” might do the trick.

That said, can you imagine the media circus if:
    1. An active male professional sports player married another male?
    2. An active male professional sports player married another active male professional sports player?
    3. An active male professional sports player married another active male professional sports player in the same sport?
    4. An active male professional sports player married another active male professional sports player on the same team?

Can you even imagine? The first scenario could easily happen in our lifetimes. The other three…….probably not.

was listening to some fleetwod mac yesterday…christine mcvie doesn’t get much hype but she’s back there on a ton of classics..

Maybe “with JB and iHart *both* or *each* getting married…….” might do the trick.

makes sense…my bad. Married cross-town rivals would be cool.

Jon Lord is great too, but when i was going through my punk-hardcore phase and keyboards were not allowed (LOL!) the band that managed to bring back the respect for the keyboards was The Doors and Ray Manzarek. Maybe “Light My Fire” would be my choice, but all their keyboards are amazing.

Mark Jackson laid off by ESPN: Thank you, Jesus!

Doc Rivers hired by ESPN: Christ…

has there ever been another organ used by a rock band?

oh yeah, I remember a more recent band…ugh, pop music stuff…had a song in this weird comic bookish movie…

I think Ben stiller was in it…walking on the sun – or something like that…

man, that sounds by the doors was both equally cheesy and sinister all at the same time…

one of my fave lyrics of all time: woke up this morning and had myself a beer

fuck yeah, and – why not???

    who’s gonna stop me…

my alcohol drinking days may be mostly a thing of the past- I do though fully embrace a wake and bake lifestyle though…

how about greatest keyboard solos? I don’t have any specific ones in mind, but I will say anything by Bruce Hornsby

I know from consuming copious episodes of a certain podcast back in its heyday that JK showed great restraint in his response to this post. It had to have been like reading “how about the all time greatest point guards? I don’t have any specific ones in mind, but Frank Ntilikina obviously makes the list.”

IMO, going from Breen, Van Gundy, and Jackson to Breen, Burke and Rivers is another of an endless number of dumb moves by ESPN.

Breen is going be terrific no matter what, but a huge part of the success of Breen, Van Gundy, and Jackson was their obvious friendship and chemistry. Even though some people don’t like Jackson, those guys all love each other. That’s a big part of what made that team so successful. That’s going to be lost.

Second, I know some people like Burke, but I’m not one of them. IMO she’s overrated as a basketball analyst.

Third, I’ll take Van Gundy’s basketball analysis over Rivers any day of the week. Rivers may be the most overrated coach ever.

This is like a Classic Coke moment.

Let’s take something that’s been working well for years, that practically has brand value, and blow it up for an inferior product.

    Rock keyboard solos I enjoy:

Garth Hudson on Rag Mama Rag (that guy is just such a gifted musician, he can make virtually any song better just by being a part of it).

    Gregg Allman on Jessica.

Bill Payne on Dixie Chicken (again from Waiting For Columbus), and a bunch of other songs.

Roy Bittan on Racing in the Street, which he really brings home, as well as a bunch of other songs, both with Springsteen and without him.

The Silver Bullet Band member who plays on Against The Wind, which is probably the rare song that is unfuckupable, so not sure how much credit is due.

JS Bach, who sticks a heavy-metal harpsichord solo at the end of the first movement of his 5th Brandenburg Concerto. (I hate the harpsichord as an instrument but it’s awesome that he wrote in the score “shred for 24 measures” way back in 1710).

I’ll throw in a couple, more for just being my faves than for technical achievement:

    -Little Feat: Dixie Chicken
-Keyboard (both organ and piano) at the end of Janis Joplin’s Me and Bobby McGee
-Jethro Tull Locomotive Breath (mainly the intro but the piano is great throughout)

There’s so much good Stevie Wonder, Billy Joel, Elton John, and Leon Russell stuff that it’s hard to even go there…

Court and Spark is a great Joni Mitchell piano-based song….

how about greatest keyboard solos? I don’t have any specific ones in mind, but I will say anything by Bruce Hornsby

Sorry Donnie that’s just not fair at all. I get that Hornsby is a little Adult Contemporary for some tastes, but as a keyboard player since the age of 8, I can say that I can’t even conceive of doing some of the solos Hornsby does. Listen to The Way It Is and tell me that’s not great piano playing

Also you referenced Gregg Allman on Jessica, that’s actually Chuck Leavell, who I mentioned at the beginning of the thread. Listen to him here also on Southbound, just great stuff

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yuTxosZqMGQ&list=RDyuTxosZqMGQ&start_radio=1

Riders on the storm by the doors. Do it again by steely Dan.

Yeah Ray Manzarek was a pretentious dbag, but his work on Riders is fantastic.

i was in NYC a few weeks back and had a pie at Rubirossa on Mulberry…that was damn good..

just played an iggy and the stooges remaster ….”head on” from the raw power album…the dude on keyboards does a nice job on that one….

Are we including synthesizer players in the piano category?

The premise was “I’m a lifelong keyboard player, so how about greatest keyboard solos?“, so yeah, synthesizers are keyboards.

Sorry Donnie that’s just not fair at all… I can say that I can’t even conceive of doing some of the solos Hornsby does.

Hey, I like Hornsby. I just happen to know that our resident musicologist isn’t much of a fan:)

Also you referenced Gregg Allman on Jessica, that’s actually Chuck Leavell

Aha, I did not know that. I’d just assumed that he’d stepped out from behind his Hammond to tickle the ivories for that one. Thanks for setting me straight. That is still a very fun bit of music to listen to even after all these years.

Because they’re not really rock, I don’t know if they should be included, but I forgot about the Talking Heads. I love the keyboard work on Stop Making Sense, including the interludes on Burning Down the House, and especially the solo on Life During Wartime, and pretty much every song. (And it still sounds good today, unlike a lot of the keyboarding from that era.)

They carried it over to the little creatures album as well…and then Weymouth and Frantz did it over on the tom tom club album- dark sneak love action
