Songs I’d add to the sax list, not as much for technical brilliance as just being the right sound for the song:
    Dire Straights: Your Latest Trick
    Steely Dan: Black Cow
    Linda Ronstadt: Ooh Baby Baby

-Rolling Stones – Brown Sugar (Bobby Keys)

    – Not a big George Michael fan, but the sax on Careless Whisper is pretty sweet

    – Probably overrated at this point, but you can’t overlook Clarence Clemons on Jungleland

Don’t those Supertramp songs famously have clarinet solos? Maybe they also contain sax solos, but all I think about with that group is “clarinet rock.”

I played sax for 2 years in elementary school, but quit due to a band teacher who was a real jerk. My mom sold the sax, and that was that…

Anyways, lots of great songs with sax.

As for bands that used them regularly, how about George Thorogood and the Destroyers? “Bad to the Bone,” etc.

An under the radar band would be the Suburbs, an 80’s band that’s still around, off an on over the years, but has had a lot of lineup changes. They started as a punk band with a piano player, but quickly morphed into an odd but interesting new wavish funky art rock dance band with an edge. They started touring with a sax and trumpet player. Their song, “Love is the Law,” is probably their most sort of famous. Cheesy tex-mex trumpets, then sax solo later.

    Here it is

Very goofy low budget video, but cool song. Sax solo kicks in at around 2:44

So Hungry, So Angry – Medium Medium

Quality Crayon Wax Ok – Essential Logic

Romeo Void – Never Say Never

Three fun post punk type songs with sax. Essential Logic is actually the sax player from X-Ray Spex who left to start her own band.

And while I’m strolling down memory lane, here’s “Love is the Law” live in 2002, with an aging Suburbs reunited with the original lineup and a bigger horn section. Sadly, their lead guitarist Bruce Allen, on the right in a long white shirt and black vest, died of cancer just a few years later.

    🙂

Edit, I remember Romeo Void well…I had an album of theirs and still might in one of my stacks!

    4. David Bowie – Young Americans. It’s David Sanborn, who doesn’t exactly score you tons of “cool” points. Appropriate for the song though.

Sanborn hosted Night Music which was probably the best live music show ever- certainly the most eclectic (curated by the late great Hal Wilner)- and was rock solid any time he sat in with performers no matter what the genre. Really gained a lot of respect for him. And I still have a soft spot for the album Another Hand which he put out during that era- produced by Willner and featuring a great line up of musicians.

nice call on the Romeo Void song….if we’re going in that time frame…how bout Madness – One Step Beyond

I have aja on in my car for about 2 years now…it relaxes me to listen to the same stuff over and over again…

the kids hum and sing those songs all the time now…

I saw you in rudy’s…you were very high…

Apparently the Mets are getting a lot of inquiries about Justin Verlander.

Verlander has gotten better results as of late, but his peripherals during that stretch haven’t been great. If they can move that contract without eating too much of it while also picking up prospects, I would be delighted.

    couple of great fights today…

gaethje/poirier will be painful to watch…the places those two competitors are willing to go are phenomenal…

spence/crawford should be a spectacular fight as well…

Baker Street is such a great song…forgot about the sax in it…it definitely did blend in well…

someone mentioned INXS yesterday…the sax solo in what you need is pretty lively…

i remember the eurythmics using a sax effectively also…trying to remember which song it is i’m thinking of…

it’s there must be an angel

Wow, reports of Scherzer going to Texas and the Mets getting back their #3 prospect (#44 overall). If this is for real, I’m guessing the Mets are eating a lot of his contract for this year and next.

The prospect is Ronald Acuna’s little brother Luisangel, a rather small SS with an .830 OPS at AA this year.

Word is that Scherzer is refusing to waive his NTC for some inexplicable reason.

Mets fans are through with Scherzer, who serves up cupcakes to hitters on a regular basis and is in general a humorless bore. If he refuses to waive this NTC, he’ll be mercilessly booed (more so) for the remainder of his tenure.

I’ve also read that supposedly Steve Gelbs (on SNY?) has reported the Scherzer is willing to go, but that the money going back is a holdup.

Whatever the case, I hope it goes through.

The holdup it seems is that the Rangers want Scherzer to opt in for next season, and Scherzer wants to keep the contract a player option.

Which seems crazy because nobody on earth is ever giving this dude more than $43M in a season to throw a baseball, but I guess he wants to leave himself an out in case he hates playing for the Rangers?

Mets broadcast saying that Heyman says the deal is done.

Meanwhile, Carlos Carrasco is an amazing combination of bad and unlucky…

Well, never mind, the trade went through.

The Mets receive Acuna, and the Rangers receive Scherzer and $22.5M.

Mets broadcast saying the Mets are kicking in up to $36.6m if Scherzer picks up his option after the season.

Meanwhile, Verlander is in the dugout laughing and such, so I guess he’s safe at least for tonight….

Cohen’s gonna go after Yoshinobu Yamamoto in the offseason.

Acuna is now easily the top prospect in the Mets system, and is close to MLB ready. This fire sale is going great so far. Next do Verlander!

I wonder how that $36M is spread out over the two seasons, for luxury tax purposes. Would be great if the Mets just ate the remainder of this year and then the other $22M or so of his salary next year. This year’s already a sunk cost.

Reports on the cash going back seem rather goofy at this time. One report says the Mets are covering all except $22.5m.

LOL at some guys on the Mets boards wondering why another SS prospect. Uh, if he’s ready, slide Acuna to 2b next year and McNeil to the OF.

If all goes well, in a few years, he and Lindor switch sides.

Hey JK, I was flipping through the channels the other night and stumbled upon a 2006 tribute to Les Paul which featured some artists doing his songs and others using various Les Paul guitars. I was very impressed by a version of Little Wing done by Toto guitarist Steve Lukather. Was never much of a fan of Toto so never heard of Lukather but was blown away by his playing. Then looked him up and learned that he was one of the more sought-after and highly regarded session guitarists out there. Any insights?

Lukather was a huge session guy. Those kinds of players can do just about anything in any style. He’s got technique and soul. Thumbs up from me (non-guitarist).

Lots of good sax in songs suggestions. One that came to mind was “Still Crazy After All These Years,” Michael Brecker (I think). Nothing too technically impressive, just a transformative moment in the song done on his back.

Steve Lukather is a great player, was THE top call session guitarist in LA for many, many years. He is probably one of the most recorded guitarists ever, played on thousands of albums.

What too session players all have in common is flawless “time feel” or what I often refer to as “pocket.” You can hear Lukather’s great time feel on the song “Human Nature” by Michael Jackson. I love his playing on that.

At the end of the last thread I wasn’t just naming songs that had a saxophone in them. I was naming songs where the sax plays an integral role in elevating the song to a much higher level. Usually the sax does nothing for a rock song, or, worse, completely ruins it. Just my opinion of course. (I’ll give JK Us and Them, which I hadn’t thought of, and does represent a good use of the instrument:)

As for Clarence Clemons, I love him and all the songs he plays on. But his solos are never the best part of the song, they just act as a good interlude between verses. The only exception that comes to mind is his solo in the live version of Trapped, but it’s not really in the Springsteen/Clemons official cannon, as it’s a Jimmy Cliff cover that they never recorded in the studio. Jungleland, Born to Run, Secret Garden, etc are all very good and keep the songs great, but they are all lyrically driven, transcendent works that happen to have sax in them instead of guitar solos. (I do like the sultry outro he plays on Dancing in the Dark, but it may just be because I’m a Brian DePalma fan (and Courtney Cox is okay too)).

Oh, and Lukather is great. I ironically went to see Toto play a while back, and it quickly turned unironic. I realized I was watching a master. It was one of my more fun live music experiences thanks to that unexpected development. (He played Little Wing that night, it was very memorable:)

Every time i miss a week or more in here i come back and don’t know what to expect!!
    Sax!!?!!?!!
    You guys are Top!
I’m a Coltrane fan but not a true fan of sax sound! Go figure!
Anyway if there’s one Rock band i recommend heavily for Sax is the mighty Van Der Graaf Generator.
    And not only for sax…
    Life changing material
