@Geo,
I’m very happy to hear that you’re starting to feel comfortable in your “new life”, keep it rolling bro.
Oh, my left shoulder wants to fall off too, getting older sucks 😉
Yeah, happy to hear you’re getting better, Geo. 😉 And what about the shoulder, Max? Been playing basket to join the Knicks, is that it?
And last but not least, Silky probably lost a little bit of himself today… RIP Milan Kundera!

Since it looks to be another slow day here and there are some writers in the room, this piece in the NYT is kind of amusing in terms of a different kind of writing coach: Pedro.

Yeah @Cyber, too many three pointers, I heard Leon still needs shooting! 😉
Alcaraz Rune a matchup we are going to see a lot of in the next ten years I wager….

Some interesting commentary on the death of free agency from David Falk. Agree with his take that the max salary has created a bizarre form of homogenization wherein the absolute best players in the game get paid the same amount as dudes who are…pretty good. Not sure I agree with his take that trade demands are inherently “bad for the game.” That seems measurable.
This Eubanks kid is about the right size for small forward. wonder how his defense is.
He is 6′ 7″ and has great lateral movemt. Too bad he’s busy right now.
Geo, sorry, I wasn’t ignoring your questions, just wanted to be thoughtful in replying. I used to read a ton of sci-fi but haven’t in awhile. All the early greats, from Verne and Wells to Bradbury, l’Engel, Heinlein, Niven, Asimov, Herbert, Clarke, LeGuin, Chrichton, Dick, Miller, Douglas Adams et al. I confess I read a bunch of Star Trek and Star Wars novels, too, the shame. But I haven’t kept up; I have to read more professionally these days, so it’s catch as catch can. I loved The Time Traveler’s Wife, Station 11, Exhalation, Annihilation, The Left Hand of Darkness…I’ve been meaning to read Snow Crash forever, and more recently The Three Body Problem and This is How You Lose the Time War. The Martian was fine, no ideas, but fun. I wanted to read Scott Card till I learned he’s a fascist. Lots of great books for the future! Which makes me think I should be wasting less time on the Knicks and videogames and more on getting back into reading…
Actually in the middle of “The Best American Science Fiction and Fantasy 2022” (edited by Rebecca Roanhorse). I used to devour those short story compilations as a kid, but it’s been interesting going through this now, as Post-Trump and -Covid, my hypersensitivities are almost overpowered by some of the stories, which because they’re short often have a terrific gut punch to them (and I’m still waiting for a cheerful, upbeat one…).
Really good, though, and wildly inventive.
And Rama, Card is a huge ass, but Ender’s Game is quite incredible, and I thought Ender’s Shadow, which covers the same time period but from a secondary character’s perspective, was almost as good.
His books rapidly declined from my perspective, which nicely matched my growing dislike for the author himself, so that was okay to me. But you should try to borrow a copy of both (read them in order) from a friend (so you don’t put coins in Card’s coffers).
thank you so much max and cyber…i appreciate your well wishes so much…
you know – for years i used to wonder what life without work would be like…if i had that time spent at work and thinking at work back in my life…
i got a little taste of it last year when i was out of work for 7 months…
i’m still early in to life without work…i can see the possibilities much more clearly…
i’ve done alright for myself in terms of money, work, family…i do spend a lot of time though, doing nothing these days…not sure how long that will last…
the clock and the calendar’s grip on me is loosening…such a beautiful feeling – to be free of time…
awwwwww, thanks rama 🙂
sometimes i feel a bit of a thief taking so much joy from the words and stories that folk’s share here…
hard to explain what it means to me…
probably my favorite job ever was working at a bookstore called Walden Books (has since closed) at the del monte shopping center in monterey…
went to work there after i got diagnosed with the myxedema stuff…used to walk through the woods from my apartment over to the store…never forget walking home one day and coming across the biggest owl i had ever seen, in a tree overhead…i had no idea they could get so darn big…
that reminds me of seeing a vulture up close in chaco canyon (ancient cliff dwelling site in new mexico) – those things are pretty huge too…
but, yeah – i enjoyed the atmosphere soooo much in the book store…
people who read have so much a broader perspective of the world…
through reading you are able to live and experience many many lives…
i’ve pretty much given up most gaming except for the elder scrolls online…shoot, i have some characters now that are 8 years old in the game…i pretty much just pvp now…they have this open map called cyrodiil which is divided in to 3 alliances…during peak hours there may be close to 150 people or so engaged in the alliance war there…
i enjoy the character build theorycrafting and fighting…
nothing like world of warcraft where people are gonna be having 20 year old toons next year…
if it’s okay to press a bit further – what type of gaming do you enjoy…
and please, i like to hear everyone’s story…i guess it’s just some folks i feel a bit more comfortable with imposing in to their space…
Don’t worry Geo, at the right time you’ll start filling the day of things you like (to complement your parental/mentorship activities), a lazy “decompression” time is quite common when someone stop working daily.
Yes, getting out of what I used to call “the hamster’s wheel” and its time constrictions is a fantastic feeling…
I was thinking that after posting – don’t want to pass on what I hear is a great book. Borrowing is the way to go. (Though libraries do pay for their books and do pay authors…)
Ender’s Game is the only book I’ve read cover-to-cover, and did so in an afternoon… twice.
Personally didn’t enjoy Shadow. It’s not terrible, and probably a fine book on its own, just too similar to Game in a lot of plot points and not quite as good.
Some people really like the Speaker for the Dead sequel too. Wasn’t for me either.
I aspire to read Snow Crash but certain I never will
I don’t see Indy trading for Siakam, because the only reason Toronto is trading him is because they don’t think he’s worth a max extension (especially with the new CBA), so anywhere he gets traded, it has to be a place where he will stay longterm, and I don’t think he wants to play for Indy.
The problem is that the team he wants to go to, Atlanta, has nothing to trade for him, right? So I don’t know what the heck is going to happen.
I lived in Walden Books. Choice of suburban weirdos everywhere. So many bookstores and chains gone… who’d have thought I’d be rooting for B&N to survive?
Siakam is an even worse 3pt shooter than Obi and not really an amazing defender these days. He’s pretty even with Randle tbh, and if we can’t get fair value for Randle on his contract, I doubt Toronto will get much value at all for Saikam, who is looking to get maxed. He also seems like a bad fit in Atlanta, so idk where he ends up.
Maybe they could find a team for Capela? Atlanta doesn’t have a lot of draft stuff to trade and they presumably don’t want to give up Okongwu
I remember looking at the numbers during the season, and Siakam and Randle are pretty similar players, except that Siakam misses a lot of games. So Randle probably has much more value on his current contract.
Did E call in a favor from Lebron James?
https://twitter.com/KingJames/status/1679239696436838400
That Obi-to-Cam fast break was like peering into the alternative reality for some folks when it was all about trading Randle for peanuts (and also dumping RJ…).
Cam really does have every tool to make it to being a star except the tool between his ears…
Really wish I could find a compilation of every time Cam tried to iso, got shutdown, and attempted a godawful stepback midrange jumper that barely touched the rim
On maybe the deadest night in American professional sports, I will note that Jaylen Martin has a nice looking stroke.
Martin is going to be an NBA player, and maybe a very good one
It’s amazing they have the Knicks on ESPN
Roby can dribble a lil bit
LeBron could definitely coach up Cam. I don’t think he’ll ever be a star, but he could improve significantly in LA.
Keels is hot garbage again.
You kinda hope Keels was out all night partying
Knicks now playing like somebody told them they’re allowed to win these games
Gotta block out there
Wow, most exciting SL moment I’ve ever seen despite the rest of the game being among the most boring
Martin with the game winner!
Fun stuff!
Keels looked better at the end, but still bricked everything. Looked like he was playing out of the corner instead of the point more, which he did for Westchester
Martin with the pretty floater to end it
You’re a good man Charlie Brown, Jr
For the Magic, Black seemed to really struggle beating his man at times
Only half watched the game, so take it all with a pillar of salt on top of the SL disclaimer
Didn’t Lebron say similar stuff about Shabazz Napier and Dion Waiters in the past?
I’m not confident in his scouting abilities.
