Winning against Miami on wednesday to win the series against them is super important. If we don’t, they’ll tie the series and have the tiebreaker.

    (1) Better winning percentage in games against each other
    (2) Division leader wins a tie over a team not leading a division
    (3) Division won-lost percentage (only if teams are in same division)
    (4) Conference won-lost percentage

If we tie with Brooklyn, on the 1st we’re tied too (series ended 2-2), the 2nd doesn’t apply (Boston will win our division), we can win the 3rd because we’re 8-8 on the division and they’re 7-8, but they still have a game at home with Philly, so they can still tie it. And given that it’s the last game of the season, maybe Philly can be without something to fight for to be focused on winning. So the 4th rule can apply, we’re 28-19 on the conference and they’re 27-20, so this one will go until the end.

Alan – my wife and I wander for months in the wilderness before finding a show we can watch. But we found one. Maestro in Blue on Netflix. My wife is Greek American so she can watch it in the original and I try to keep up with the subtitles, which is often impossible given how fast Greek people speak.

Through three episodes and it seems pretty darn good. Put it in the queue!

If it’s a three team tiebreaker between all three, Miami wins it because of the division title, and if we lose to Miami we’ll be 4-4 among the 3 teams and Brooklyn already finished this at 5-3. So if we lose to Miami and then end tied with both of them we’ll be in the play-in.

    (1) Division leader wins tie from team not leading a division (this criterion is applied regardless of whether the tied teams are in the same division)
    (2) Better winning percentage in all games among the tied teams
    (3) Division won-lost percentage (only if all teams are in same division)
    (4) Conference won-lost percentage

Don’t know Maestro in Blue, Owen, but i’ve put it on my list to check it out. I love watching shows from countries not named USA or UK, because it’s a way to know them (a little) better. And i’ve never watched a show from Greece, so it’ll be a first. 🙂 And yeah, in Portugal i’m very accustomed to subtitles, so i’m always on the original version. I even can speak a little of danish, swedish and norwegian, because of all the shows from there that i’ve watched.
Anyone watched A Spy Among Friends? I liked it very much.

I didn’t watch “A Spy among Friends”, but I would suggest “Vienna Blood” (PBS/Amazon). It’s a bit like Sherlock Holmes.

The Last of Us is very sad and very good. Anybody else thinks so? No spoilers please, I only watched the first 5 episodes.

I would suggest “Vienna Blood” (PBS/Amazon). It’s a bit like Sherlock Holmes.

Thanks, going to put it on the list too. 😉

The Greeks know drama!!! They invented it!

    LOL

The Last of Us is amazing, and although i’ve never played the game, Lady Cyber has played the game and found the show to be amazing too. I think she even liked it more than me.

    Shams:

The New York Knicks are signing forward DaQuan Jeffries to a multi-year contract, sources tell @TheAthletic @Stadium. Jeffries, averaging 21 points for Knicks’ Westchester G League affiliate, completed two 10-day deals with New York.

Darules, love Last of Us, and I’ve also never played the game. One of the year’s very best shows so far, along with Poker Face, the Party Down revival, Cunk on Earth, and some stuff I’ve seen that have yet to debut, like Succession or this new Netflix show I liked a lot called Beef.

I still can’t get over that Heat-Nets result last night. Just bizarre that they would be a complete no show for a home game when they supposedly had found their “mojo”

Also Alan, love Cunk on Earth, she’s a genius

One would think a team starting DSJ and Svi would have some problems against Doncic and Kyrie…

    @CallieCaplan
Luka Doncic isn’t himself. Walked slowly to the bench at Q1 buzzer, didn’t reciprocate high fives, plopped down on a chair separate from the huddle.

Looks like a reaction any human might while going through difficult personal time in life, not just a 30-16 deficit to Hornets.

    Sounds almost last season Julius.

I love Party Down but feel that it still hasn’t quite captured the magic of the original run. There’s less abject hopelessness in Adam Scott’s character that made him pathetically endearing. I also don’t think the episodes have the cohesiveness the original run had where they brought together all the story threads at the end of the episode and tied them into a neat bow (the first episode of this season did a great job of this). I’m having fun, yet not as much fun as the original run.

    I’m sorry what

The Party Down revival, now playing on Starz! There’s a deal for $3 for a one month trial, which is nice because I don’t know what else I’m ever going to watch on Starz.

    Thanks for the list, Alan.

I also never played the game. I wish I had the time to do that, instead of work work work.

Both Irving and Doncic are playing, Mavs aren’t deliberately tanking, but their post trade deadline unraveling is incredible. The Knicks pick is not certain at all at this point.

Mavs are not a dependable franchise. Their brilliant move to swap Tray with Luca was followed by a spectacular failure in the Porzingis trade, and now another possible failure in the Kyrie Irving trade. Jason Kidd likely to pay the price if they don’t get it together this time, but I am not sure he is the culprit.

because I don’t know what else I’m ever going to watch on Starz.

doesn’t really find its footing ’til episode 4 (a thing in the pit) – Spartacus: Blood and Sand is on Starz…it was filmed in new zealand and doesn’t really have a US/UK vibe…okay, maybe a little…

re-watching it now for like the 10th time…i love that show…andy whitfield is absolutely brilliant in the lead…great supporting cast, in particular lucy lawless and john hanna…great fun…cool to see michael hurst’s name show up in the credits, and than to see the work he did with Vikings…

Luka mentioned some off the court issues in the post game interview after the last loss, but he didn’t elaborate when asked. He said it was private.

After a brief bit of insanity at the start of last season when I thought I saw signs of real competence, I’m now pretty sure the combination of Cuban, Kidd, and Harrison is the worst basketball trifecta in the NBA right now.

They appear clueless about how to value players, how to build a team of players that fits well together, how to design a versatile offense and defense, how to put coherent lineups together, which players to use and how to use them and so on.

Who would have ever thought Cuban could be so bad that he’d find a way into the lottery with what should be the Knicks pick. It’s mind boggling how bad he’s been. And he’s missing picks on top of having this trash heap.

Watching Dallas and specifically Luka play defense makes me less frustrated watching the Knicks. Amazingly as bad as they’ve played lately the Knicks defense is 5th in opponents eFG%.

One other thing to worry about is that the 10th lotto slot is held by the Bulls. If the Bulls won their play-in games to reach the playoffs, their pick would then be out of the lottery at 15 and the Mavs would get pick 10.

Dallas plays a back to back at Indy tomorrow and Luka picked up his 16th tech today so if it’s not rescinded he’ll miss that game.

I’ve never seen a team on defense just lazily switch everything like Dallas does, it’s perplexing to watch.

Following today’s loss, they are 11th in the West, 3 games under 500 with only 7 games to go. Would anyone bet they are making the playoffs? I am not even sure Jason Kidd makes it until the end of the regular season.

Last year Dallas had a very good team that more or less just needed a C that could protect the rim and defend to take another step.

    Setting aside Brunson… lmao

Instead they added Wood and McGee to their big men (lmao) and gave multiple years to McGee (double lmao).

Then they gave up their best wing defender (DFS), a player that was excelling playing off the ball player with Doncic and who could be their backup PG (Dinwiddie), and a pick to get Kyrie – a no defense player with “issues” that needs the ball in hands to be effective.

They are probably going to lose Wood for nothing since they couldn’t trade him at the deadline (after giving up minor assets for him), get stuck with McGee, and might not be able to get back as much as they gave up for Kyrie when he wants out or Doncic doesn’t want to play with him. They also have 2 more years with Hardaway and Bertans and multiple years with Kleeber.

The two things they did right were drafting Josh Green (who is becoming a good role player) and possibly Jaden Hardy (who is showing flashes).

Of the many things I didn’t foresee about this Knicks season, sweating out the protections on the Mavs pick might be chief among them. That was of course before they traded for Kyrie Irving.

“Of the many things I didn’t foresee about this Knicks season, sweating out the protections on the Mavs pick might be chief among them. That was of course before they traded for Kyrie Irving.”

Almost every move they’ve made over the last 2 years was at best neutral (and I would argue bad) or clearly bad other than the 2 players they drafted that I mentioned. I thought the only possibility of this happening was something like a Doncic ACL or Achilles early in the season.

Based on how they’ve played this year I’m less worried the pick will be in the 20s next year.

On the other hand, I’m starting to worry it’ll never convey.

Alan’s tryina get me to subscribe to another magazine AND another streaming service. Not today, satan.

I’ve never seen a team on defense just lazily switch everything like Dallas does, it’s perplexing to watch.

wasn’t allllll that long ago when we used to switch on everything…that was close to, if not, the low point over the last couple of decades…

super slo-mo defensive switching…so painful, so very painful…

Jimmy Butler currently looking at Alcaraz. Not sure a good or bad thing.

You guys used to be all horny for Succession, but then season 3 came out and I never heard anybody here mention the show ever again. Are you all even the least bit interested in season 4, or was season 3 of Succession kind of like season 3 of the Porzingis’s career for you?

(I ask only because I’ve wondered for a while how long a show with no B story and no likable characters can sustain an audience of knick fans)

Speaking of actors and stuff I had no idea Jonathan Majors was such an asshole.

Yeah, the Majors news is hugely disappointed, because I think he’s a phenomenal actor.

If these allegations prove credible (and they sure sound credible), what the hell does Marvel do? This seems like a substantially bigger mess than the Ezra Miller thing, both because the offense seems worse and because Majors is supposed to be the main villain for an entire “phase” of Marvel films.

Anthony Volpe won the Yankees starting shortstop job. Nice to see the team not dicking around with service time to save money five seasons from now, when this guy should obviously be in the lineup from Opening Day.

Alan’s tryina get me to subscribe to another magazine AND another streaming service. Not today, satan.

The new episodes are really good, Jowles. I would argue it’s maybe the first TV revival season since Twin Peaks to have fully justified its existence. And unlike Twin Peaks: The Return, it feels exactly like the show did when last we saw it.

Also, my articles about the show — and other things — have been pretty good, too, I would say. Give into the Dark Side, Jowles…

Who ees dees Volpe, and why ees eet dat we speak of heem in dis way now?

Top Yankees prospect since Aaron Judge, has drawn comparisons to Jeter — i.e., mature beyond his years, game comes very easily to him, always making adjustments, very good at everything (even if he doesn’t have any elite skills other than maybe his hit tool), etc.

The Yankees sat out the last two incredible shortstop free agent classes because they’ve been waiting on Volpe and their other top shortstop prospect, Oswald Peraza. Everyone assumed Peraza would win the job out of spring training because he’s more experienced, because the Yankees generally take it slow with prospects, and because keeping him in the minors for at least a few weeks at the start of the season would have delayed Volpe’s free agency by an extra year. And then he played like Roy Hobbes throughout spring training, Peraza struggled, and the “competition” that everyone figured was rigged turned out to be a real thing. Or, at least, Volpe made it into a real thing.

doesn’t really find its footing ’til episode 4 (a thing in the pit) – Spartacus: Blood and Sand is on Starz…

Had to chime in to second Geo on this. This show is better than it had any right to be — one of the few I think back on fondly over a decade later. It hits like a stylized version of HBO’s Rome, another fantastic sword & sandals show struck by misfortune.

Thank you for the response on Mr. Volpe. My only involvement with MLB is playing DFS (which I won’t do until after Opening Day), and of course whatever I hear from the guys on ESPN 98.7. So I’m not all that “plugged in.” Thanks again.

I’ll check out Spartacus. Mostly I just don’t want to pay for yet another streaming service.

In 17 games, he’s hit .314 with six doubles, a triple, three homers, five steals, eight walks and a 1.064 OPS.

And Volpe means fox in Italian.

When Dallas was being discussed a few posts ago, I didn’t realize that they had just managed to lose to Charlotte for the second game in a row. That’s amazing. I’m really not sure what’s going on there, but I do hope we get the draft pick this year, which is starting to seem unlikely.

I’m not even sure if the Mavs are trying to win or tanking.

It makes sense to tank to keep the pick because imo they aren’t going anywhere this year anyway and could really use the extra depth from a top 10 pick. On the flip side, the west appears very wide open and all it would take is a streak of a few wins to be positioned well in that conference. Then you could hope Doncic and Irving get a roll.

The NBA is so weird right now. It’s almost too much parity.

The LeBron/KD era is winding down and young teams like Orlando and OKC might be coming into their own finally.

Where does that leave the Knicks? Idk… probably trying to take advantage of a gap between generational talents with the hope that they can draft well in the teens and twenties?

I know we’re having a nice season, but it still doesn’t seem sustainable tbh.

I ask only because I’ve wondered for a while how long a show with no B story and no likable characters can sustain an audience of knick fans)

This is the kind of content I subscribe for.

Maybe just surround Luka with some guys who can catch passes, shoot threes, dunk lobs and play defense.

“The NBA is so weird right now. It’s almost too much parity.”

I think for awhile we had some 3 star teams like that were far ahead of most of the other teams. Now it’s more of a 2 star league. I’m not sure exactly when I realized the change. I guess it was about 30 games or so ago. But suddenly I felt a lot better about the Knicks. We have 2 players that aren’t a LOT behind some of the other two man tandems and we have fairly deep team. There aren’t that many teams that are clearly way better than us. Of course, there are also quite a few teams behind us in the standings that are close to use. But I think the best teams now are weaker than they have been in some other recent years.

*** Maybe just surround Luka with some guys who can catch passes, shoot threes, dunk lobs and play defense.***

Aaron McKie, George Lynch, Tyrone Hill, Theo Ratliff, and Eric Snow are all free agents this summer.

glad to hear about volpe…what in the world is josh donaldson still doing on the team…

I really like our new centerfielder…

hopefully lemahieu stays healthy and has a nice bounce back year…that dude is crazy valuable…

“*** Maybe just surround Luka with some guys who can catch passes, shoot threes, dunk lobs and play defense.***:

To be honest, I think the first part of that has been part of the problem.

They’ve been sacrificing interior defense, rebounding, and a more balanced attack on offense to maximize space and Doncic. That’s the point I’ve been making for a few years. That’s sort of what the Rockets tried to do with Harden, but they did it better than Dallas. I think that’s a good formula for a very good offense, impressive boxscore stats for Doncic, maybe even an MVP for Doncic, but an unlikely championship. IMO, you have to defend, rebound, and sometimes trade a little space for other attributes.

I know we’ve had this chicken or egg conversation in the past. They haven’t been playing this way because of the lack of skills of the other players. They’ve been targeting players that can shoot 3s over other attributes so they have a lot of space.

hey EB, it is not everyone’s cup of tea for sure, lots of violence, senseless violence…

    gratuitous sex, juvenile at times…

whitfield plays it so serious though, he’s magnificent…there’s different reasons this one season worked – when it really should not have…he’s the main one though…

what caught my attention when watching it the first time was the dirty politics stuff of lawless and hanna…

they were just so good…the dialogue is pretty fun also…

if you’re able to stick it out for a 13 episode first season – the season finale is really something else…

if you liked the first 12 episodes- the payout on episode 13 is amazing…

Warriors found a unique new way to blow a game: fumbling the almost-impossible to fumble “dribbling out the game clock” play.

Man, it’s been one of those years (for virtually every team in the west).

Another good piece by Katz in The Athletic, which also looks at Randle spending some recent time in the 2021 way-back machine:

“For a team that’s still nine games above .500, the Knicks have switched from hot to cold and back to hot and back to cold quicker than Bengay.

They’ve won at least three straight six times this season. They’ve lost at least three straight five times. A few months ago, they followed an eight-game winning streak with a five-game losing streak and then followed that with a four-game winning streak. On this stretch, they won nine consecutive games, then lost three in a row, then won three in a row and have now lost their past three.”
