2022-23 Game Thread: Knicks @ Hawks

The Knicks head to Atlanta to take on a Hawks team that has gotten healthier lately, and tonight will play their entire top six for the third game in a row, which will be the first time they’ve done that in quite a while (Trae, Murray, Hunter, Collins, Capela, with Bogie off of the bench – Capela is on an increased minutes limit, so he might start, or they might continue starting Okongwu and bring Capela off of the bench).

Boy, with AJ Griffin coming along nicely, and Jalen Johnson showing something, and Hunter being so capable of playing the 4, a Collins trade has never made MORE sense, right? But what would it even be for? What do the Hawks need besides health?

Thibs is smartly starting Jericho Sims tonight. I love me some Sims, so let’s hope that he holds up well while Mitch is out as the new starter.

Big game against an improving Atlanta team (they seem to start slowly and then turn it around later on every freakin’ year, right?), let’s hope that they pull it out. Luckily, it’s on the road, where the Knicks have the second-best road record in the league!

Come on, Knicks, we need a win so that we can get radio silence tomorrow until the next loss!

Let’s go, Knicks!

What’s the record for most points in a quarter by 2 teams? Might be in danger

Not a whole lot of defense going on. Thankfully, the offense has been great.

I guess THAT’s what the Hawks could trade Collins for. Someone who can play defense.

I was watching a clip of Shaq going on a stream of consciousness rant on Open Court two years ago and it’s crazy the grudges that players will remember. Shaq called out Jason Richardson for blowing an assignment on a Christmas Day game in 2008 where Grant Hill apparently told him to stay home on the shooter in the corner (Shaq misremembered it as being Ginobili, but it was actually little-used Roger Mason), and then Richardson came off of the corner shooter and sure enough, the ball went to the corner shooter, Mason, who hit the game-winning wide open three. 12 years later, Shaq still remembered that shit (not fully accurately, but enough that it was clear it still stuck in his craw).

Thank god they’re actually allowing Toppin to play around the hoop.

Great feed from Grimes

Love when I get to the thread and say what everyone has already said

Well that was a terribly exciting half.

We can keep shooting 72%, right?

Obi doing some Obi things was nice, it’s been a while.

Being up 3 while shooting 71% from the field makes me nervous…

I dunno if I should feel thrilled with the way the Knicks played in the 1st half or disgusted with the way they played defense.

pretty sure we’re gonna give three firsts and two swaps for richaun holmes at halftime. we are looking rough against the (admittedly strong) pnr. sims drops straight into the stanchion and hart commendably tries to hedge but ends up stuck on the perimeter like a kid with floaties.

I wish we didn’t have an antiquated offense that only a neanderthal like Thibs would think is good. Imagine how much better we’d be…

BigBlue, the Hawks are shooting 20% worse than the Knicks!

Seriously, I know what you mean. Seems like many of their misses were open shots.

This is kind of a bizarro game for the whole team. We usually win by controlling possessions – few turnovers, lots of rebounds. Instead we’re shooting lights out but they’re hanging with our crazy shooting because we’re being beaten in both of those categories.

Very strange game. And a very annoying third so far.

Last time I looked..I don’t think they hand out awards at the end of the year for that statistic..maybe MSG network will recognize it…

With Mitch we lead the league on 2nd chance points. Without him, i don’t think we’ll keep the lead.

Trolling is contagious, I guess, but just in case you’re new to statistics, the idea is that certain metrics can be predictive of performance. An efficient offense is a good thing. The reward given out is wins. We grade out well in SRS, so actually we should have a pretty good record at the end of the year. If that’s what you’re interested in.

I do appreciate Randle looking for Sims regularly, even if it doesn’t work very often.

Seeing Sims standing in the corner just makes me sad.

Dude…not sure who appointed you policeman and you can call it whatever makes you feel good…but fine…let’s wait till the end of the season to see the record…

And yes..I am new to high level statistics such as they are in professional sports…gtfoh…

The one thing that surprises me is Brunson not using the full clock. Usually more canny than that.

It’s just so palpably weird how our 20-point leads are thinner than tissue paper, but these running 4-8 point gaps of late feel absolutely insurmountable.

Sooooooo weird.

Obviously, Mitch is awesome, and losing Mitch is a big deal, but come on, Thibs has to be given more than a single game to adjust the defense, so I wouldn’t take too much from this terrible defensive performance. If it keeps up, then, well, you know.

Our problem today is our defense, the offense has been fine. Maybe with some time Thibs can build a good defense without Mitch.

Felt like Barrett shot us out of the game after his first half heroics.

Sims with a decent line, 12-8. Two steals.

Signs of Obi-life, although 1-4 from three won’t cut it (but he shouldn’t have more threes than twos in terms of attempts).

I thought Deuce shut down Young really nicely when they were in together, but for some reason Thibs played him mostly when Murray was manning the point and he got consistently burned by the guy that’s 6’5″, while Young played IQ repeatedly. Not the best laid plan.

thibs is saving the good stuff for the play-in game…

well well well…what do you know – january 20, 2023…knicks plus 3 in the win column…friday night knicks and exactly 67 game posts to the moment…

i have a feeling, more than a few of us knew the game was lost before the ball was tipped…

i don’t think there is any question in anyone’s mind that this absurdly low game thread posting is directly due to donnie’s wanton disregard for normal fandom rules…

you’re just a madman sir…leaving a wake of knick nothingness in your path…

what have you done…what you have done…

Wow, what a crazy win for the Lakers! When AD gets back, they’re going to be interesting.

Watched the highlights . Wow. If I were a Grizzlies fan I would have had a bottle of bourbon after that one.

Pretty classic grizzlies game. Dillon Brooks 4-17. Clarke 7-7 but missed the crucial free throw, Jones 6-9 and 4-6 from three. Adams had 17 rebounds with 8 offensive.

Hell of a way to lose after winning 11 straight.

The Grizzlies really seem to have perfected the star and scrub model. I guess JJJ may be a star, I don’t know, but pretty deep team with just the one real star.
