I still appreciate irony of being demeaned for driving a Tesla by a bunch of Dolan-era Knick fans…

I hired an Uber to drive me from San Diego to Palm Springs recently and it was Tesla. That thing was insane. Dude was just chilling while the Tesla was self driving us at 80mph with a tv-sized screen detailing everything that was happening in a 100 yard radius. And I mean everything. That shit knew the difference between a sedan and an SUV, and it also knew when someone two lanes over was drifting into another lane. I give you no shit, Donnie Walsh. No shit at all.

Palm Springs is a good hang, and I would love to retire there someday, but by the time I retire the average temperature on a summer day is going to be like 150 degrees

    @ShamsCharania
Sources: There is confidence in Bulls guard Lonzo Ball’s ability to return this season following left knee surgery on Wednesday that doctors believe addressed the issue. Ball is expected to miss at least a few months.

“Palm Springs is a good hang, and I would love to retire there someday, but by the time I retire the average temperature on a summer day is going to be like 150 degrees”

“Yeah, but at least it won’t be underwater.”

Talk like this reminds me of the Superman movie where Lex Luther was buying up property inland and planning to divert a nuclear bomb into the San Andreas fault to cause an earthquake in CA that would create a brand new beach front for his land.

Maybe it’s time we start buying up land near the penguins and one end and polar bears at the other. The summers and winters will probably be milder than your projections for Palm Springs.

    “@ShamsCharania

Not that I want our competitors to do well, but I like Lonzo’s game more than the average fan and think they missed him a LOT. I hope he makes a full recovery and picks up where he left off. He’s too young to be done.

Chatter earlier about how the Celtics might do this year, there’s this:

From January 23 on, the Celtics outscored their opponents by an unfathomable 15.2 points per 100 possessions, with garbage time removed, per Cleaning the Glass. Over that span, the Celtics led the league in offensive rating (120.6 points per 100 possessions). They led the league in defensive rating (105.4, with no other team below 110). And they led the league in winning percentage (.800, or a 28-7 record).

That’s not just excellence—that’s sustained supremacy for nearly half a season. And with Marcus Smart, Jaylen Brown, and Jayson Tatum still leading the way, Boston is poised for another impressive season, even accounting for ample regression from the plus-15.2 figure.

People underrated the Celtics going into last year because they had a lot of bad luck the previous year. But so far, this year is not going exactly as planned. They are obviously still going to be very good barring a disaster, but at one point it looked like they had filled all their needs to win a championship. Now the foundation looks a little shakier.

To me the Celtics struggling and then going on that tear in the second half points to the fact that the league has a lot of parity now, not that the celtics are that dominant.

I mean, they’re good. But I think the gap between the absolute best teams and the merely good teams is not that much. It’s one of the reasons why I’m team optimist. I think if RJ and some of our youngsters improve and Randle bounces back, we can jump into that good team category pretty quickly. And from there, it would be one elite player away from being a great team.

There aren’t really any super teams right now with two top 10 players or 3 top 20 players in their prime.

The Celtics had an incredible defense but of their two best defenders one has a bad knee and the other is 35

Man, beat me to it. Was going to say basically the same thing. Al Horford had a pretty spectacular 2000 minutes last year considering he was 35 and the Celtics are actively considering whether to use him in back to backs this year (currently a go.) And Williams was really good, though as I recall they didn’t miss him much.

The Celtics don’t feel like they should be that good. I don’t really believe in Tatum or Brown are ever going to hit generational star status and you usually you need one of those to have a truly great team. But you can’t argue with the results I guess and maybe they have Pistons or Mavs type title run in them.

Also, I would never want to bet against a team with Luke Kornet.

Yeah, Gene Hackman’s Lex Luthor plan to buy Nevada real estate and sink California was probably the best supervillain idea ever put out there.

On the other end of the spectrum, Kevin Spacey’s Lex Luthor plan to terraform the earth was… not as good.

That was Horford’s best chance at a chip. Best case scenario is he takes 80% of the season on autopilot and comes back to the playoffs fresh.

Boston looks to be the next in line after Phoenix, Miami, LA and Toronto to have a great Finals run and a disappointing follow-up season. Wouldn’t be surprised to see Golden State “underachieve” with three of their starters on the decline. (That’s not an argument that they will fall off a cliff, but that there’s no reasonable assumption that they will maintain their play year over year.)

Shout out to Gene Hackman for that Lex Luthor performance, btw. It continues to bum me out that we can’t get a good modern Superman movie franchise going. I was pretty optimistic about Man of Steel but that shit went downhill quickly. There is so much to mine in the myth of Superman. Someone just needs to read the Umberto Eco essay and give the project to someone who understands.

Golden State is going to win two more championships with Steph, Klay and Green.

Golden State is going to win two more championships with Steph, Klay and Green.

I advocated for the Dubs to trade the whole lot of them in summer 2020 and do a legit rebuild with the 12+ picks they would have received, so even though your prediction seems insane, I’m not willing to bet against it.

There is so much to mine in the myth of Superman.

Having an early IPA at the amazing Raquette River Brewing Co. in Tupper Lake, NY. Highly recommended if you are in these parts. There is a food truck with the best wood fired pizza I’ve ever had.

I am passing through Los Angeles, where I just discovered that one of my best friends (now former) has lied about literally everything she told me for the last 7 years and is trafficking unsuspecting women like Ghislaine Maxwell. And the worst part is everyone here who I tell this to seems nonplussed.

I don’t know about this town, man. This place is pretty fucked. I’m gonna need some Cholada Thai or to take in a JK47 gig to feel better. Maybe shoot some hoops w CDiggy.

I’m pretty fucking shook. This girl, my friend, told me that another girl who was spending the weekend with us was “there for me” and strongly implied I could sleep w her. I didn’t get that vibe and told my friend as much. She and her husband were like “you need to be aggressive. She likes forceful men. You have to basically rape her.” These are real quotes. In speaking to this girl who was with us, I quickly got the sense that she had no idea what was happening, and I encouraged to leave and never come back (she did). I then began to unravel years worth of lies and realized how many other innocent women were put in a similar position. She would befriend them, win their trust, and invite them to cool places. These girls thought she was their friend. Then she would tell the men at these places that her girl friend is a whore, or that one of them really likes them and wants him to “be assertive”. I was able to suss it out, but I can imagine a less ethical man taking her advice and forcing himself on her, or being mad when the woman isn’t responding the way he expected her to based on what she told him.

I am genuinely stunned this shit happened within my circle, and I’m stunned more people aren’t stunned. I had to spend the last few days contacting every woman I know who hangs out with her to warn them, and in the process I have unraveled years and years of lies.

It’s been a shock, to say the least. This is not the right place for a person who assumes most people are good.

a huge smile and laugh has suddenly appeared – thank you sir…

It’s been a shock, to say the least. This is not the right place for a person who assumes most people are good.

thanks for sharing hubie…wow, that’s a lot of serious stuff there, heartbreaking and disturbing…what a mind fuck that get together to catch up must have been…

my friend helped me a bunch with this issue of old friends popping back up in your life (happened to me this last weekend)…she just shared with me that their search/need for joy, fulfillment, healing, whatever the fuck it is, should not equal suffering on my part…it’s painful for me to look back, i’ll do it with my therapist, but, not someone i haven’t spoken to in years, no thanks…i gotta stay in the present and keep moving forward in as healthy a way as possible

that’s just so fucked up hubie…wishing you the best…

Othella Harrington on the staff huh? As a Hoya fan- that makes me smile. But as a Knicks fan? It’s cringe-worthy lol. We actually trotted out an underwhelming Harrington AND a well past his peak Clarence Weatherspoon at PF. Yikes! I wonder what he can bring as a developmental coach though.

Z–Man, small world — Raquette River Brewing sponsors a good friend of mine’s four-woman canoe in local races. They even provided two coolers of beer to their last dinner!

Hubert, I don’t have words. Takes all the air out of my enjoyment of pro-marriage Marjorie Taylor Greene’s impending divorce.

It’s a really horrible story. Sorry for you (and for the women, and for the world).

Yikes, Hubert. I can’t really suss out what part of that story is the worst part. The friends who seem indifferent about it is maybe the worst part.

It would (not) really be a shame if law enforcement got tipped off to this.

Oh I didn’t even mention the part where she told everyone who was coming to this house in Palm Springs (a house that she said was hers, and for which I gave her a special gift, only to find it is not hers at all, it’s an Airbnb) that I was some big shot NY banker who invested in films and could finance their projects (spoiler: I am not).

And when this all came to a head in Joshua Tree and I called her out for all of it, she and her husband stranded me in the desert. Just stranded me. They were my ride back.

Here are the good parts, though:

    1. I made it back safely (if not expensively).

    2. I got to eat all the mushrooms myself, without anyone being around me, inside a modern architectural landmark known as Acido Dorado.

    3. I truly experienced desert magic, without having to do something stupid like “go to burning man”. I got to know all the plants and their unique personalities. We talked in depth. This one plant asked why I didn’t return Cara DiPietro’s love back when I was 20, and I had to confess that it was because I didn’t love myself. I thought that was pretty deep for a cactus.

    4. And in the irony of all ironies, me and the woman she was essentially trafficking to me really like each other and went on a very nice date last night.

So for me all ended up well, but I am deeply concerned for all the women in this city.

I am gobsmacked Hubert. This has the making of a classic film noir (maybe Alan can hook you up*). There are so many layers of betrayal here that it’s hard to to discern ( as JK mentioned), which is the worst.
    * You select who plays you
Just read that Mike Breen’s LI home burnt down, fortunately, no one was hurt.

In my younger days, late 20’s/early 30’s, I was a bit of a partier. Bars in LA close at 2AM, so you gotta figure out what to do after that, so you end up in the illicit after hours kind of scene, which by nature is lawless and pretty dark.

At the time I was naive and it seemed like it was all consenting adults consuming the substances of their choice at a late hour, but in retrospect it seems there was definitely some human trafficking going on. These places had gambling and every type of illegal drug for sale, and it’s probably a miracle I never got stabbed or robbed or whatever. LAPD certainly knew of the existence of these places, and must have gotten some sort of kickback from the proprietors.

Sadly there are a lot of young women who come out to Los Angeles looking for a break in the entertainment industry and who are naive and end up in dangerous predicaments. It’s nothing new unfortunately. We’ve all seen the Poison videos.

I got to eat all the mushrooms myself, without anyone being around me, inside a modern architectural landmark known as Acido Dorado.

most definitely a good sign for that sort of trip…how did you survive the heat?

    Hubert

That story goes way beyond the consenting adults kind of arrangements everyone knows are going on. Lying to women to get them to show up and setting them up to essentially be raped deserves banishment to hell. Also, thank goodness you are an intrinsically good guy and the situation felt off to you. Some men might have gotten aggressive with the woman assuming it was part of her preference. Then you could find yourself being charged with rape and having a story that no one would believe. At least you found out what kind of person you were dealing with before it caused you personal damage.

Similar events happen in NYC . One of my best friends was one of the first Black models at the then vaunted Ford agency. In the aughts, she was part of a party girl pack hanging out at Cipriani’s and many of her so-called friends would try to pimp her out to the likes of Harvey Weinstein and European trust fund dudes. It was incredibly seamy. Now these ladies are in the late 30’s or early 40’s and have been discarded by those dudes for the younger ladies seeking to make it here. It’s a never ending cycle.

After all of this, I had dinner on Sunday in Palm Springs, and was eating at the bar alone. A nice older woman was eating next to me alone and we started talking. I really needed to tell this story to someone, and she was happy to hear it. At the end she goes “I’ve never heard anything like this.” And I was like “really? cuz I have like 4 other stories that are crazier than this ALL FROM THE LAST YEAR. Which one would you like to hear next, the one about the home invader or the time I found out I was a dad?”

And to JK47’s point, I thought about tipping off law enforcement or doing something to put her on blast, but experience tells me I am lucky to have escaped unharmed and I want to do everything I can to keep it that way. There is no limit to the damage she can do if she’s willing to lie and has a shitty husband who will corroborate everything she says. Best not wake the sleeping dog.

    “Here is Thibs on Randle-Obi

    https://twitter.com/sny_knicks/status/1575555075774234624

    Apparently he might be right”

I think our default should generally be to give Thibs the benefit of the doubt.

He’s totally obsessed with coaching/winning. He’s a smart guy. Whatever numbers we are looking at, he’s has already seen them and has probably analyzed them in more detail while watching game film obsessively and seeing things in practice we never get to see.

I think it’s interesting that he is looking at detailed lineup combinations numerically as well as going by what he’s seeing on the court with those combinations and also putting more weight on meaningful minutes. That’s what I would be trying to do if I didn’t have a life other than basketball.

***me and the woman she was essentially trafficking to me really like each other and went on a very nice date last night.***

You guys are gonna have a hell of a story to tell your grandkids.

I think Thibs is right about the Obi Randle combo (it doesn’t work) but absolutely no to giving him the benefit of the doubt by default.

Everyone at this level is obsessed with winning. Some coaches are so obsessed that they try new things consistently in the regular season.

There are small lineups we should definitely try this year. The best ones probably don’t include Obi or Randle.

Give me, for instance, Brunson-Grimes-Fournier-Barrett with Mitch or iHart.

    Or Brunson-Quickley-Grimes-Barrett with a C.

Someone posted some garbage and non garbage splits and they backed up Thibs.

I don’t know. I don’t generally believe in garbage time per se. I think the data people give you is pretty meaningful, at least far more so in basketball than in other sports. Even Summer League numbers can have value and small samples in the NBA are often quite demonstrative. Like with Christian Wood.

Thibs at least seems to be engaging with the numbers on some kind of plausible level. It’s not Woodson.

Thibs leaves his starters in when he’s up or down by large margins probably more than any coach who ever lived. Is there really much “garbage time” on this team?

How many times do we all scream “COME ON DUDE WE’RE DOWN BY 22 WITH TWO MINUTES LEFT AND YOU STILL HAVE THE STARTERS IN” at our televisions in the course of a typical Thibs season?

How many times does your wife scream “COME ON DUDE THEY’RE DOWN BY 22 WITH TWO MINUTES LEFT AND YOU STILL HAVE THE TV ON” in the course of a typical season?

My wife is dreading the upcoming baseball playoffs. Yesterday I almost needed to take a trip to the ER because Pete Alonso swung at a slider that was a foot off the plate

It is a little ironic that he leaves them in and then doesn’t count the stats.

Anyway, Kevin Pelton’s projections came out today. They’re behind a paywall so I don’t want to give it away but I’ll share the west bc it’s really interesting.

    1 PHX – 49 wins on average
    2 DEN – 48
    3 NO – 48
    4 MEM – 46
    5 MIN – 46
    6 LAC – 44
    7 DAL – 43
    8 GS – 42
    9 LAL – 37

Over in the east Boston led the way with 54 average wins and our beloved Knickerbockers came in 9th with 41.5, squarely in no man’s land.

speaking of shrooms…i put a pinch between the ol’cheek and gum on Tues night and went to see Iron Maiden…now that was a trip…those dudes still crank it out…since the last show I saw them was like 35 yrs ago…666

Pelton predicts 41.5 wins and all three guys on the Dunc’d On Knicks season preview predicted about 40 wins. All of those projections are better than the Vegas line. That is nice. I’m not worried about being in no-man’s land. I have modest ambitions. I just want a team that plays hard, is fun to watch and wins enough that I don’t give up emotionally on them.

On another topic, I’m wondering how much outraged fan mail Pelton is getting from Golden State and Laker fans, both of whom are projected by him to be about as good as the Knicks.

wow, the shit which has happened to Tua over the last 5 days makes it very hard to wanna watch the nfl…

that was another very disturbing visual after he experienced yet another significant blow to the head…

OKC and Houston just made the most meaningless 8 player trade in NBA history: https://twitter.com/wojespn/status/1575651435823628288

OKC trades Favors, Ty Jerome, Harkless, Theo Maledon, and ATL’s 2025 2nd round pick to Houston for David Nwaba, Sterling Brown, Trey “OAKAAK” Burke, and Marquese Chriss.

I thought you were supposed to make tea with them…you just put them in your mouth and leave them there for a while?

Never heard of making tea with them, people I knew either put them on pizza or in a peanut butter sandwich, something with a really strong flavor to cover the taste, and ate them.

donnie if you’re going to show up at an anime convention just to repeatedly ridicule people for their surprising dedication to cosplay, trying picking one that actually exists. it’s getting pretty clear there was no server transition. hubert just fell asleep in his zoomicle 84 pages into inherent vice and reimagined a knickerblogger where things actually happened. you’re just another 2.5 dimensional npc like the rest of us. except donovan mitchell who may have slipped through the wormhole for good.

    A reader’s guide to ptmilo’s latest post:

zoomicle: a way to make Zoom-meetings and tele-visits more interactive.

Inherent vice: A darkly comic detective novel set in 1970s California, the plot follows sleuth Larry “Doc” Sportello whose ex-girlfriend asks him to investigate a scheme involving a prominent land developer.

Npc: “nonplayable character”. It’s a term, borrowed from the world of video games, for a character that is controlled by the computer rather than by a player. An NPC often advances the game’s plot by saying scripted lines, or assisting the playable characters in some way.

Wormhole: A wormhole is a speculative structure linking disparate points in spacetime, and is based on a special solution of the Einstein field equations. A wormhole can be visualized as a tunnel with two ends at separate points in spacetime.

re: Obi and Randle, I think Thibs is right in that it hasn’t worked, but he’s wrong in that he thinks it can’t work. He doesn’t want to look hard enough to find out.

***this is a weird fucking thread***

Just wait until your skoal flavored magic mushrooms kick in.

One of those endpoints is in Cleveland?? Kinda takes the allure out of Einstein’s field equations, no?

yeah, peanut butter, ritz, and a bit of fungi…

OKC and Houston just made the most meaningless 8 player trade in NBA history:

I saw some OKC fan the other day say that they could really stand to do a deal where they traded away those exact four guys, but I didn’t think it would actually happen, but it did. I assume they’ll cut all of the guys they got from Houston.
