Knicks Trade Marcus Morris to Los Angeles Clippers

Ian Begley has the trade return.

The Knicks get Moe Harkless, the Clippers’ 2020 first rounder, the Pistons’ 2021 second rounder, the draft rights to Issuf Sanon and the right to swap first rounders next year with the Clippers (that does not include the Mavericks pick that the Knicks own, so I’m sure the Clippers were, like, “Uhmmm…okay, sure, if you really want to. You get you suck, right?”).

That’s a fine return. Good job, Perry!

I mean, Morris’ strong play made him an easy guy to trade, but it’s still a fine return.

During the offseaon, it was clear that the Knicks signed one dude who clearly had trade value and it was Morris. Thank goodness they actually traded him.

Did they only have him to trade because one of the multiple midlevel guys they rushed to sign on the first day of the offseaon turned out to be hurt? Sure, but hey, better to be lucky than not!

  1. now that we’ve traded our “best” player year to date (mitch still has some work to do), i wonder if this signals the all tank ahead rotation approach…

hopefully we’ll get to see more/some randall at the five, knox at the 4, RJ at the 3, and frank at the 2/3 spot…

  2. First of all, Shump Shump.

The right to swap picks with the clips next year is like me having the right to swap pants with me from 20 years ago.

  3. We trading something that had no value whatsoever to us and got a couple picks that might become something valuable. So that’s a win.

  4. This is a good deal for us. Casual fans might bemoan the lack of young players and the fact Morris wasn’t involved in a deal for DLo or Drummond but this is at least a top 3 outcome of the dozen or so possibilities we faced this deadline.

We now have 7 1st rounders in the next 4 years. We have a war chest…….

  5. Isnt it a good trade? we got a pick for someone who’s having a career year.
also, i know we have Mitch but if Drummond can b obtain for that price we should have traded for him atleast we have one piece of the puzzle. I honestly think Drummond is a very good player.

  6. Hubert, Covington has 2 more years left after this one on a bargain contract. You get that right? It’s not a valid comparison no matter how many times you bring it up.

    and

Anyone upset needs to find an example of a better return for someone who is:

    1) Expiring
    2) On the wrong side of 30
    3) Almost exactly average by every metric

Robert Covington is 475 days younger than Marcus Morris.

Robert Covington makes only $2.9mm less than Marcus Morris.

The Clippers can, and probably will, re-sign Morris with his non-bird rights.

Morris is likely to make a much greater impact on the NBA championship this year than Covington.

As for average metrics, here is their side-by-side for this year:

    https://www.basketball-reference.com/play-index/pcm_finder.fcgi?request=1&sum=0&player_id1_hint=Marcus Morris&player_id1_select=Marcus Morris&player_id1=morrima03&y1=2020&player_id2_hint=Robert Covington&player_id2_select=Robert Covington&y2=2020&player_id2=covinro01&idx=players

Sorry, but Morris was the best player available and the Clippers got him for very little. It’s *great* that we got something for him, but we fucked up by waiting so long and zeroing in on two asset-poor teams.

  7. i don’t know, i guess it’s a good knick day…

still, looking at the day as a whole (still got a game to play) i’m going to take away the feeling that not only did we bring in a bunch of “mercs” to play ball for us this off-season – i feel like we just brought in another merc to come run our front office…

  8. Pretty nice job by Perry.
Harkless is not a bad player – just limited in terms of offense, but he’s easily the best wing defender on the team now, and can swing between the 3 and 4. You could put a pretty solid defensive lineup out there of Frank, RJ, Dot, Harkless, and Mitch. He would not be a ridiculous guy to re-sign in the offseason (to a smaller contract of course).

The 2021 DET 2nd is sneaky good.
Who knows about this Sanon guy, but hey, why not.
Does anyone know whether the pick swap option includes the Mavs’ pick? Like if KP and Luka blow up next year and the Macs are great, and the Clips are just fine, we could trade the Mavs pick for the Clips pick?

  9. Robert Covington is 475 days younger than Marcus Morris.

Robert Covington makes only $2.9mm less than Marcus Morris.

You left out “for two more seasons” on the second point. Yes, the Clippers can re-sign Morris, but you know what’s better than that? Covington just…being signed, for less money.

Covington fetched two firsts and Morris fetched a first and a valuable second. It makes perfect sense given the differences. This is a pointless hill to die on.

  10. The covington return wasn’t much better than the Morris return and he’s on a longer contract, so idk what you’re upset about

  11. I think Covington is a better player and a better asset than Morris and is regarded as more valuable around the league. Covington has two more years at 12 million, Morris will probably get at least 15 million a year after this season and his new contract will likely go until he 33-34 while Covington’s ends at 31. Plus Morris could easily leave. Morris is shooting the 3 better this year but until this year was about equal from three as Covington so unless the improvement is real and huge he will probably regress at some point. Mainly though Covington is widely regarded as one of the best defenders in the league while Morris is regarded as simply a good defender.

So even if all of Morris’s improvement is real he is still a one-year rental and a worse defender than Convington. I think we got a perfectly fair return and I don’t think there was some much better return out there that we missed.

I’m sad we couldn’t dump Smith Jr. and Portis for something of value. Even a late 2nd or a marginal prospect.

  12. Supposedly the Dolan release is because Leon Rose has to officially decertify as an agent. Dolan isn’t really a good communicator.

  13. Det’s 2nd is during the double draft when HS players can enter again. That honestly may be more valuable than a 1st round pick most years.

I’m seeing a $3.7 million difference between Morris and RoCo. RoCo is also more valuable on defense. So I’m not convinced that Morris is even the better player.

  14. @20 – you got my sarcasm :)

Yeah, I wondered about the 2nd rounder too. Also, a late 1st locks the Knicks into a rookie deal. The 2nd round pick is more movable.

  15. Should be interesting to see who gets all the shots now. Harkless is a pretty decent player but he doesn’t like to shoot much.

Also what are the Warriors doing?

  16. Doesn’t he literally have a PR guy to advise him to do that? Or is the PR guy only involved in decisions for which he is not qualified, like choosing a POBO?

  17. “First of all, Shump Shump.

The right to swap picks with the clips next year is like me having the right to swap pants with me from 20 years ago.”

Standing on the corner, laughing like a jackass.

Can anyone enlighten me as to what the Rangers pres actually does? Does this, to pick a random possibility, not foreclose the possibility of Masai at MSG?

  18. so idk what you’re upset about

It was too good of a trade for LA. If you’re trying to win your first title *and* block your #1 rival from getting him, in a seller’s market, and you come away feeling as good as they do, we didn’t get enough.

On the flip side, we got something for nothing, so that’s great. I see that side of it.

  19. this year’s draft isn’t too deep however there are very interesting pg type prospects at the tail end of the first rd… ashton hagans ..tre jones and kira lewis are three that represent good value from where they are currently getting mocked…

this has the potential to be a very good draft for us… altho i’m not too enamored with the fact that it’s probably leon rose in charge of who gets drafted….

  20. nice pic dred :)

ugh, i keep putting it off, but – i need to buy one of those pizza slab things for the oven, and, get to making some homemade pies…

  21. Considering what else happened on the trade market, we probably did as well as we could. Drummond and Iguodala, two other expiring contracts in the same quality range as Morris, fetched very little. We didn’t make a coup, but we did well enough. Which, for the Knicks, is a coup.

I wish we’d be able to get something for Bullock, Harkless, and Payton, all of whom are decent vets on decent contracts, but it seems like there was no market for fringy rotation players.

  22. If the Lakers weren’t going to give up Kuzma (who isn’t even good) what exactly were the clippers competing with?

  23. I really can’t believe that Iguodala is getting a $15M AAV contract through ages 37 and 38. He was fine last year, but man, they must really believe that he’s immune from aging.

  24. Hey, we made a pretty good trade today regardless of the other typical Knicks nonsense. Anyone know anything about this Sanon kid?

So this has got to be a top 5 trade of the Dolan error, doesn’t it?

  25. I assume Harkless will just step in as sf because we probably won’t play the kids anymore. I predict a lot of one-on-one Randle in our future, and I’m just not gonna watch that.

Things are still pretty bleak despite the 7 picks in 4 years. RJ still looks like crap, DSJ isn’t even worth a 2nd rounder, Knox was a waste of a pick, and Frank should be approaching mediocre in about 2027. Mitch is about all we have and he’s very limited.

I still have zero faith in these kids getting better or the FO making intelligent draft selections any time soon.

    So here we are.

  26. If the Lakers weren’t going to give up Kuzma (who isn’t even good) what exactly were the clippers competing with?

The other team that I expected to be out there was the Bucks (who had Indiana’s first to trade) but they didn’t really pop up in any rumors at all. Reporting is that they don’t want to take any chances with their chemistry and I guess Morris is a bit of a risk in that regard. I agree that it doesn’t seem like we ended up with much leverage, and we got a low first, a high second, and a couple fliers on some extra marginal value. That’s really good! If Detroit’s 2nd ends up in the top 5 picks (and they look like they’re planning to go for a full rebuild) that often ends up being as valuable as one of the last couple picks of the first round because of the extra flexibility.

  27. Man Steph and Klay are going to love playing with Wiggins.

I know Drummond was expiring, but you gotta think there were better deals out there for him. Maybe the market for 1 dimensional bigs has finally dried up.

  28. Well, if Taj, Moe and BulLOCK play more than 70 MPG combined in the next 20 games it’s officially a completely wasted season.

  29. I really can’t believe that Iguodala is getting a $15M AAV contract through ages 37 and 38. He was fine last year, but man, they must really believe that he’s immune from aging.

It has been interesting to tread the commentary around Iguodala sitting out the season to date. I believe I have seen it referred to as a “power move” in some articles.

Taking inspirations from him, I am going to pull a power move and not come to work on Monday….

  30. Anyway, it’s great to have some more assets, even if I think we could have gotten more. I’m thrilled we traded him.

Next year we can trade Randle, and he could yield a similar return. Bullock and Payton might bring in some 2nds, too.

We could be asset rich after all.

But you have no idea how many better deals were turned down before this one. I bet someone offered 5 or 6 first rounders for Morris. In fact, I can make up hundreds of trades that would have been better than the one we made that the Knicks turned down. And it’s all true, not because I have any evidence, but because we know that’s why Mills got fired, for turning down all of those better offers. All you have to do is fill in the blanks with whatever shit you want to make up to make it true.

  32. I think it’s safe to assume that Mills wanted to keep Morris and then give him big money to stay, for “culture” or some shit.

Let’s all be thankful today. Not for the long-term future, as Dolan let fucking the CAA alpha fox into the henhouse, but just… today.

  33. Cov is like 1.5 years younger than Morris on a better contract with years left AND rates as way better on every state besides WS/48. They are not comparable in terms of trade value.

  34. I think it’s safe to assume that Mills wanted to keep Morris and then give him big money to stay, for “culture” or some shit.

Yeah, probably. But the assumptions should stop there as to what else we could have gotten for Morris.

  35. Next year we can trade Randle, and he could yield a similar return.

Maybe I’m just too low on Randle but it’s still hard for me to see us ever getting anything for him. Morris was “starring” on the Knicks this season but it’s easy to see how his game translates into being a role player on a good team (although I think it’s better in theory than in practice – in the past he has been a bit of a ball stopper even on good teams). But Randle, I’m just not sold he has a place on a good team really. He’s showing pretty clearly that he’s not good enough offensively to be any kind of focal point (particularly for a good team) and he doesn’t contribute much outside of scoring. He’s just not the kind of player good teams are typically looking to add in order to supplement their core guys. It’s not easy to come up with hypothetical landing spots for him.

  36. I don’t think much of DSJ as a player but I’m sort of glad we didn’t trade him for nothing-if something weird happens and he gets hot from 3 or something maybe we can get a small asset for him this summer

  37. dallas reporter is saying if we had done the lakers deal then danny green was being flipped to dallas for, at least in part, the gsw 2020 second.

  38. This data is probably out of date, but it should be close enough for us to at least get a feel for the intrinsic value of what we are getting out of this pick.

    https://www.82games.com/nbadraftpicks.htm

    Picks 25-30

The most likely scenario is the player will be either a bust or bad bust.
There’s a good chance of getting a role player.
A 5% chance of a real star and between 5%-10% chance of a sold player.

To me, this year, Morris has been what I would call a “solid player”.

So the most likely scenario is that we get a young player that after several years of development is either worse or way worse than Morris, some chance in a few years he’ll be a younger version of Morris, and a very small chance he’ll be younger and better than Morris.

I think we should combine this pick with one or both of Dallas’s picks and try to land an established high quality relatively young player that happens to be unhappy at some point. That can happen in the off season or whenever. We could also use it move up. I think that both increases the probability of landing one of the 2-3 stars we still need to not continue to be the laughing stock of the league and also accelerates the development timetable as we hope Mitch, RJ, Frank and Knox improve next year.

  39. >I don’t think much of DSJ as a player but I’m sort of glad we didn’t trade him for nothing-if something weird happens and he gets hot from 3 or something maybe we can get a small asset for him this summer<

You don't have to watch him for very long to see the obvious talent. It's the injuries, suspect basketball IQ, lack of consistent effort, and occasional sulking that are a turn off to me. That's just not my profile of a player that's very likely to reach his potential. But you never know. He's still young.

  40. DSJ would be a decent enough prospect if he didn’t have a busted jump shot. But that thing looks busted beyond all hope.

  41. Can someone tell me what GSW is thinking?

Season is dead. Get picks in and shed long term salary. Costs just happened to be Wiggins. That’s the best I can come up with, because I figured the Warriors were smarter to want Wiggins for basketball reasons.

I think they whiffed on their valuations on DLo when they did the sign and trade for him. Paid like a top 25 player, but would barely crack the top 50.

  42. Just watched a 2018 interview with Sanon where when asked what NBA players he liked to watch the first name out of his mouth was Mudiay. Sky’s the limit for this kid…

  43. The Warriors probably originally thought they could turn D-Lo into something good, but people around the NBA (outside of NY and a few other places) are generally smart enough to know that he’s barely a net plus player (if at all) despite the scoring and all-star hype. He’s young and could get better. But I actually think Wiggins may be the better player and is also young and could get better under GS management . So they get compensated nicely for the extra salary on the bigger of two bad contracts.

  44. Isnt it a good trade for GSW? Not sure if they will ever need russel. Wiggins could be their 3 and with less offensive responsibility when Klay and Steph are back then it could be a fit.

  45. Chef : Lance! Hey, Lance! What do you think?

    Lance : It’s beautiful!

Chef : What’s the matter with you? You’re acting kinda weird!

Lance : Hey, you know that last tab of acid I was saving? I dropped it.

Chef : You dropped acid? Far out!

ohhhh, ahhhh…all the new pretty colors…

  46. I wonder if Draymond Green will be able to teach Wiggins how to play defense and be motivated every night?

  47. “Did the KB layout just change mid thread or did I have a stroke?”

Ha I was thinking the same thing….

Does anyone know what Trier did to become persona non grata?? Kind of baffling unless I missed whatever bad deed it is he’s accused of doing
