2017-18 Game Thread: Knicks @ Raptors

After playing something like 18 of their first 14 games at home, the Knicks head to the road to take on the Toronto Raptors.

The Knicks have actually played the Raptors pretty tough over the last few years, with rosters a lot worse than this current one, so I think that they might really have a shot tonight.

If so, that would be a huge sign that this team’s strong start is for real (to be fair, a loss wouldn’t rule that out, either, as the Raptors are a pretty good team and they’re at home). It’d be a lot of fun to see the French Prince shutting down Kyle Lowry.

Also, KP, you can go back to scoring a gazillion points, please. That was fun.

Let’s go, Knicks!

    Toronto 110
    Knicks 104

I nearly nailed last game’s score (Knicks were 2 pts. short), but I hope I’m way off on this one.

  2. Knick fan not in NJ at this time

I have been thinking about why Porzingis has a positive plus minus without Kanter, but Kanter has a negative plus minus without KP. It could be that it’s because when Kanter is out KP plays with O’Quinn, but when KP is out who does Kanter play with, Beasley? O’Quinn is a much better back up for Kanter than anyone on the Knicks is for KP.

It kinda does look like you’ll be wrong ClashFan, just the other way around.

Some lethargic play again in the first quarter, but the Raptors are a lot better than Utah…

About had it with League Pass. We’ve got excellent 60 gpbs service (in fact, I just ran speed test), yet NBA stream is fuzzy low rez. Game after game. I’ve reloaded several times…sometimes get high rez for a minute or two. Oh, yeah, the Roku app, which no longer works on sticks, crashes 2-3 times per game.

Everything else we have streams beautifully, inc. MLB, HBO, Netflix, etc. No crashes on Roku.

    Rant over.

KP is either hurt or he was just freakishly got to start the season. Doesn’t look any different than last year this game.

  6. Bruno Almeida

This looks like a 30 point blowout, nothing is falling. Rest KP, he looks like he needs it badly.

  7. Stratomatic says "NY basketball is back"

When KP gets defended well, he goes into “I’m only 22 and I have no idea what I am doing at all” mode. It gets ugly.

  8. og_nyc

KP looks worn out from the abuse he’s taking…let Kanter do the scoring and let KP take the night off…

  9. DRed

Also Frank looked slow to me earlier before I gave up watching, like he couldn’t run up and down the court.

Knicks backcourt is having a tough time with Kyle O’Quinn and DeMar DeRozan and Kristaps Porzingis has missed his first 6 shots. That’s why Toronto is up 18 early in the second quarter.

Huh? What is Ian Begley saying here?

  11. KJG

Zinger needs to sit down. Bring him back later. Right now he’s channeling his inner bargs. Makes sense in Toronto

  12. Ntilakilla

We actually find ways to make drives because our guys never stopping trying on both sides of the ball.

  13. ptmilo

they’ve run a half dozen or so PNRs with KP. But I’ve yet to see him actually set a pick or roll hard.

  14. Ntilakilla

We cut this down to single digits by the end of the quarter and we’re actually in somewhat respectable shape.

  15. bidiong

The Knicks let teams shoot so many open 3s eventually their arms get tired so they start missing. Ingenious.

  16. Bruno Almeida

Frank slowly trying to be more agressive, that layup looked quite decent.

Beasley is such a net negative tho. He makes a few shots and passes here and there, but turns it over, steps out of bounds, let’s a guy blow right past him… very annoying to watch.

They’re still hanging in this thing. They really are like Mike in Rounders! Just hanking around, hanking around!

  18. ptmilo

I’m not sure spending most of the game down 20 and making one run to 10 counts as hanging around. peeping Tom, maybe.

  19. hornyKnickfan

KP has been a net negative tonight. Poor offense and slow defense. Wasn’t good in his last game either.

They had chances to get it to single digits, but yeah, they are no longer hanging around. :)

Mr. Son-of-a-bitch, let’s play some cards.

  22. Will the Thrill

Frank looking tired and slow. His defense was lackluster tonight. Porzingis sucked on both ends.

  23. hornyKnickfan

It does look like he’s hit the wall. Some of that is the heavy workload and big minutes that he’s been asked to shoulder.

  24. Bruno Almeida

Everybody sucked hard except Jack and the Walking Bucket in the 4th I guess. Well, Toronto is a much better team still.

  25. JK47

If the guy hits the wall after 15 games every year then he’s a bum. This Mr October act with Porzingis is getting kind of old and I feel dumb for falling for it again.

I hope this is just a couple of shitty games and not an annual ritual here.

  26. bidiong

Don’t hate the Unicorn too much yet. He may just have hit a little slump. We were getting used to 30+ a night. A guy can have a few bad games.

  27. og_nyc

Hes getting beat up and getting no calls….not sure what you can do about that, but its not surprising he’s looking lethargic

  28. bidiong

Honestly I feel like the way KP and Frank go, the Knicks go. When Frank comes in and gets 6+ assists in 20 minutes they win. When KP goes for 30+ they win. When they both do it together… Unstoppable.

  29. bidiong

He’s getting beat up because he flopped for 3 games straight and the NBA told the refs to stop with that shit.

  30. DRed

Porzingis misses a game with elbow soreness, comes back, has two bad shooting games and he’s Mr. October. Or maybe his elbow is bothering him. The whole team sucked tonight. OQuinn, Lee & McBuckets shot 4-24. It annoys me that we can’t find 10 minutes for Willy and Dotson in a game like this. We weren’t in the game at any point after midway through the second quarter

  31. DRed

If Porzingis has some issue maintaining a good activity level throughout the season the Knicks need to figure out a way to manage his playing time better.

  32. latke

Yao played around 30 MPG the first three years of his career, and then the Rockets upped him into the 35 MPG range and he started having injury problems. Many other high impact players, especially very big people played limited minutes due to durability concerns such as Tyson Chandler, Manu, Nene and Ilgauskas. Knicks need to be realistic about KP. He should IMO be playing about 5 fewer MPG. If the team can make the playoffs while he’s playing lower minutes, then you can up him into the 35 MPG range.

  33. Bruno Almeida

What the hell is happening to Westbrook now? Every time I watch the Thunder lately he seems to completely shoot them out of the game, 5/22 today. Yeah, he’s still contributing everywhere else, but is he trying to prove retroactively that Harden was robbed of the MVP or something?

  34. Bruno Almeida

Also, the Nuggets are insanely outscoring the Pelicans 33 to 8 in the first quarter, what the hell.

  35. og_nyc

KP isnt flopping every time…Dwight Howard was tackling him for most of that game…but he is euro so the flop gene may well be strong…but he is legit getting beat up….

  36. yellowboy90

He is making it harder than it really needs to be. He should be kicking out to all the shooters when he drives but instead he puts his head down and attacks then looks for a call or pull up for a mid range jumper. He/(all okc big 3) needs to adobt that quick swing/skip pass that Harden does.

Sidenote: Raymond “kidd” Felton continues to look spry.

  37. Bruno Almeida

Yeah, he seems incapable of changing modes in a way, he resorts to hero ball so much more than he needs to. Melo and George have been playing better but he’s chucking like crazy.

  38. The Glass Half Rebuilt

Calling KP Mr. October is a hot take. Let’s pump the breaks and wait for November to finish. This is year 3 for him so outings like this aren’t excusable, but let’s give him a chance before we trade him to Boston.

  39. Grocer

It annoys me that we can’t find 10 minutes for Willy and Dotson in a game like this.

This. So much this. Beyond not giving minutes to folks who need them, why the fuck are we making our starters blow energy in a game where they’re sucking so badly?

  40. Z-man

Hornacek seems to be going with the players he feels gives the team the best chance to win, and won’t make changes until they start losing or guys get hurt. I don’t like it, but I get it.

I’m not worried about KP’s scoring so much. He’ll have to adjust to getting roughed up. His lack of passing and rebounding bug me.
