The radio guy said he was going to make $600,000,000 this winter, which is Ohtani money, even though he doesn’t pitch. Is this a Jalen Brown situation? Or did Ohtani just inflate everybody who has a knack for moving a baseball around a large field?

I don’t know how much he will earn, but it will be determined by what Steve Cohen does in Queens. He has a good team and has the ammo to out spend the Yankees, should he choose that option.

He is also a brilliant businessman, so he isn’t likely to allow himself to be manipulated by an agent like Boras.

Soto is unique. When he is locked in he is the hardest player to pitch to in a big spot as we saw last night. He hits for average, power with the best eye in the game.

Judge is great with enormous power, but he has holes in his swing and because of the violence in his swing he has tendencies to have slums that are significant in length. He also goes on monstrous heaters for weeks at a time when he is in synch.

Stanton can be pitched to. As we saw in the AB where he tied the game, off speed away is his Achilles heel for the first 2 pitches, by the one he hit was a slider that caught way too much of the plate ahead in the count and he murdered it.

Soto’s AB was classic. He fouled off a bunch of high quality pitches that strike out about everyone and then hit the winner on a 95mph fastball above the top of the zone.

Virtually no one else in the game could have had that AB.

Hes 26… barely entering his prime in the perfect situation to be a free agent. As Teddy KGB says in Rounders…”Pay that man his falking moniez!”

Missed the game last night bc I was watching Sturgill Simpson croon in Forest Hills.

Watched Soto AB this morning and got chills. Probably (edit: definitely) the first time this team made me excited since Game 1 of the 2019 ALCS.

I’ve been resisting this team largely bc I don’t trust Hal to pay the guy at the end. Give him the billion if that’s what it takes. That was insane.

It’s about Soto’s age as much as it is about him being a modern-day Ted Williams. The back half of his contract won’t have nearly the risk that Judge’s contract does.

If I’m Boras I’m asking for a 16 year contract with opt outs every 4 years… Hal’s testicles are in a vise

The biggest concern with paying Soto has nothing to do with him at all: it’s how many corners will Hal cut to offset paying for him.

    Funny but I actually think
that is the best case scenario. I would love to have his next 4 years and let someone else pay for his 30s. You could even trade him for a bounty before his first opt out and rebuild the roster. If the Yankees get his age 26-29 seasons,
and a boatload of prospects, and have no risk of his decline… what more could you ask for?

I’m pretty sure Soto will ask for and get a no trade clause. 🙂

It’s not like Hal is some sort of penny-pincher… they have a well oiled cash cow and they aren’t going to disrupt it for anyone.

Gerrit Cole has an opt out this season, which will be very interesting…

Cole’s option and Soto’s free agency make for a very interesting offseason and while I think that both will be re-signed it will make the Yanks even more top-heavy with many veteran players let go to absorb the financial blast.

Torres, Verdugo and Holmes are free agents (and Torres’ price should be too high), I doubt Rizzo’s (17M) and Trevino’s (5M) team options will be picked up and I don’t know what will they do with Kahnle (will he accept less than the 5,75M he got this year?).

After his surprising season they have to pickup Weaver’s team-friendly option (2,5M) and maybe re-sign Hill for the minimum (again).

Loaisiga, Burdi and Bickford are always injured, they are at best minimum salary candidates.

DJLM is an albatross (2 years remaining at 15M per).

It’s time for the next batch of youngsters to help (Dominguez, Rice, Jones, Peraza, Warren, Messinger…).

Still no word on Achiuwa’s hamstring?

I couldn’t find anything so far, they keep their mouths shut uh?

So, who do we use the 14th roster slot on?

According to the last rumors, they’ll probably go with a short roster for the first 14 days of the season, meanwhile TJ Warren is going to Westchester ready to get called.
And Huk would be converted from his 2-way to to a regular minimum.

I hope Precious is ok because I’m bigly in favor of starting him next to KAT. Reasons:

    – extra size on D
    – moves OG and Mikal to natural swingmen spots
    – he can passably shoot the corner 3 now
    – a bench with Hart and Deuce isn’t so bad maybe even good

That’s probably smart. You open up a bit more salary and can respond to injuries, if they pop up. Then you sign a non-guaranteed deal until Shamet comes back, if he does.

    From Hoops Rumors:

The Knicks are facing one of the NBA’s most restrictive hard cap situations, with just $3.58MM in wiggle room below that second-apron threshold, which they can’t surpass at any point during the 2024/25 season. They can’t even carry two more minimum-salary veterans, so the expectation is that they’ll sign a veteran to a minimum deal and promote a two-way rookie to the standard roster — Ariel Hukporti is the top candidate, and would count against the cap for the rookie minimum ($1,157,153) instead of the veteran minimum ($2,087,519), allowing the Knicks to remain below the hard cap.

The Knicks are permitted to carry just 12 players on standard contracts for up to 14 days at a time and for up to 28 total days during the regular season. It looks like they’ll probably use those first 14 days during the season’s first two weeks, meaning they won’t have to add 13th and 14th men until the first week of November.

I still don’t get how to absorb Huk’s rookie minimum plus Warren’s minimum (3,3M if full, a little less if prorated) into our remaining cap space.

Brock’s abacus must be on fire! 😀

    P.S.
Yeah EB, you’re right, a non-guaranteed deal is probably the way to go.

Warren gets the vet min counted against the cap.

It’s $2,087,519 for all players with 2+ years of experience, even though he actually gets paid more.

Waiting 14 days to sign a 14th player buys us $167,961.30 of cap space, fwiw

him being a modern-day Ted Williams.

As I’ve said, it’s been 15 years since I’ve watched any baseball, and I’ve never seen (or heard of) Soto. But I looked him up and see he’s a .280 hitter. By “modern day Ted Williams”, do you mean Ted Williams in the modern day, i.e. cryogenically thawed, but missing his head?

Still no word on Achiuwa’s hamstring?

The communication is pathetic. He may be perfectly fine and ready to play opening night, but with the Knicks you have to assume bad news because that’s usually the case. Then you just hope you are wrong.

It’s not like Hal is some sort of penny-pincher…

    🤔

    The facts say otherwise.

They were 12th in percent spend this year, their highest mark by far in the Hal era.

During most of his tenure they’ve ranked in the bottom 5 of MLB, most notably 2018 where their 27.9 percent spend was the lowest in baseball.

Austerity has been Hal’s calling card. Only when the outcry reached a fever pitch after last year (putting his perennial cow under threat) did he finally open up the purse strings.

My belief has been that he did it one time to get everyone off his back and plans to revert to form ASAP, hence my season long pessimism about his willingness to win a Soto bidding war.

After spending just a little time with this team, I admit I was probably wrong; it does really feel like Soto is here to stay. But I imagine that will simply trigger austerity elsewhere, like replacing Gleyber with the cheap Chisholm at 2B, and continuing to start the season with corner infielders that should be put to pasture.

You are right about the NTC, though. Kind of silly of me to overlook.

Austerity has been Hal’s calling card. Only when the outcry reached a fever pitch after last year (putting his perennial cow under threat) did he finally open up the purse strings.

Just a quick follow up on this:

Last year was their lowest revenue growth since the dreadful 1992 season. At just 6%, they barely outpaced inflation.

Hal’s 8 year era of relative austerity put the cash cow in serious danger of irreversible decline. Only under the threat of death did he finally spend.

Hal has never been good at business. His father went outside the family to name Steve Swindal his successor but Steve mismanaged his life. Eventually George handed the reigns to Hank, and only his untimely death made Hal the head.

Hal leans on Cashman immensely due to his own ineptitude, hence Cashman’s irrevocable job security.

    – he can passably shoot the corner 3 now

it’s surprisingly rare to find an nba player who has shot under 30pct from the corner on at least 150 attempts like precious has. little know fact that even tony allen shot 33pct on 200 plus corner 3s. he’s gonna have to prove it.

Cole’s option and Soto’s free agency make for a very interesting offseason

From what I’ve seen this month, it would not be wise of Gerritt Cole to opt out. I would be pretty happy to get out of that contract after this fall.

Thank you Donnie Walsh for giving me the biggest spit-take I’ve had in some while.

RE unfrozen Ted Williams as a comp for Soto
    🙂

Soto is like Ted Williams with 15% less power. I guess it would be nuts to tinker with his swing but he doesn’t really pull the ball or get much lift

Ted Williams never hit more than 38 homers, so I’m guessing Soto (41 this year) is fine doing what he’s doing

Note: I’ll concede that Teddy in Yankee stadium (and Juan in Fenway) might have been a different story

Donnie’s remark also reminded me of the old Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer skits from SNL, back in the day.

Cole opting out after this season automatically triggers a 1yr extension option the Yankees will almost certainly agree to exercise which would keep Cole thru 2029.

Ugh, 2-4 weeks for Precious at a minimum.

Well…hope a literal teenager can hang with Boston in a couple of days.

Is it really certain that the Yankees want to pay $36M/year for the age 34-38 seasons of a pitcher who already has serious arm problems and seems to be in decline?

I would exit stage left and invest in 1B, 3B, or LF. We don’t need his 4-5 innings per series that badly.

So, the opening night rotation is:

    Starters: Brunson/Mikal/OG/Hart/KAT

Bench: Deuce, Payne, one of Huk/Sims, Dadiet

I wonder if they replace Shamet now even if ideally they wouldn’t. We’re pretty shorthanded to begin the year.

Well, injury luck isn’t working out great for us so far. Picking up right where we left off I guess.

There’s plenty to be said for banking the seasons we got from Cole and calling it a win if he opts out but we’re a season removed from him running away with the Cy Young and there’s precedent for elite pitchers like Cole remaining effective through their late 30s (e.g. Verlander, Scherzer, Kershaw).

Unless there’s a clear, immediate plan to repurpose the money, don’t think we can let him walk.

Picking up Cole’s 1yr extension option is an obvious no brainer move which the Yankees will obviously do.

The communication is pathetic. He may be perfectly fine and ready to play opening night, but with the Knicks you have to assume bad news because that’s usually the case. Then you just hope you are wrong.

    Precious will be re-evaluated in 2 to 4 weeks…

Looks like my assumption was correct.

That could really mean he’s in intensive care.

Unless there’s a clear, immediate plan to repurpose the money,

That’s the job, though, isn’t it? There’s going to be plenty of areas that need investment.

One of the biggest differences between the Yankees, Knicks, and Giants vs their more successful counterparts in Boston this century is that the Red Sox, Celtics, and Patriots generally* know when to cut bait and retool while the NY teams tend to suffer the long, expensive tails of their superstars’ decline.

    * the Mookie Betts calamity is a glaring exception, and one we remain thankful for.

I’m firmly under the belief that we’re getting our injury bug out early in the season so our kids get some run AND we can be injury-free at the end of the year.

    #Rosecoloredglasses

Looks like we are back to Hart playing some backup PF and Huk may get an opportunity faster than we thought.

I’d let Cole opt out, because I wouldn’t want to give him a 5/180 deal starting his age 34-38 seasons if he was a free agent, which is what exercising the option would entail. His k rate is still quite good but is declining, and I don’t really like the odds of the back end of that contract working out.

I’m sorry but Yankees would be fucking nuts to let Cole walk after this season assuming he even opts out.

Sucks that Precious is injured, I was looking forward to seeing him play some with the starters.

there’s precedent for elite pitchers like Cole remaining effective through their late 30s (e.g. Verlander, Scherzer, Kershaw).

    Looked into this…

Max Scherzer was paid $243M for 16.7 WAR after age 34, an average of $14.5M per WAR.

Clayton Kershaw since age 34 has seemingly been pitching for the love of the game, i.e. he’s taken deep pay cuts to minimize Dodger risk. In his three seasons since age 34 he’s compiled 7.0 WAR while earning a paltry $43M, for a fair average of $6.1M per WAR.

Justin Verlander is insane. From age 34 to 40 he’s amassed 29.9 WAR for 218M, or $7.2M per WAR, and that includes the 2020 & 21 seasons, where he pitched just 6 innings total.

I would say Justin is an outlier of the highest magnitude who does not factor into reasonable expectations for Cole (or anyone else).

The Scherzer case shows how bad an investment Cole probably is.

And the Kershaw case is not very encouraging, either. He had two nice years and 34 & 35 but took a massive discount prior, and is likely finished.

For me it’s an easy call: if he opts out I’m spending that money more wisely.

Looks like we are back to Hart playing some backup PF and Huk may get an opportunity faster than we thought

We’re back to Josh Hart playing 48 minutes, my friend!

Max Scherzer was paid $243M for 16.7 WAR after age 34, an average of $14.5M per WAR.

I think you counted his age-34 season’s salary but not its WAR? Not sure what numbers you’re looking at but he’s only been paid ~$200M after age 34. There’s also the 2020 prorating issue artificially depressing his WAR.

I don’t think it’s all that important in any event. The point is Scherzer was effective enough to not be an albatross all the way up until this season. If Cole ages like Scherzer, the Yankees will be happy to have him through his age-38 season. Scherzer put up 6.5, 4.5 (prorated), 5.4, 4.5, and 2.2 WAR from age 34 to 38.

The fates conspiring. We’re getting a true five out whether Thibs can handle it or not. Dadiet with the most prodigious paycut since Brunson.

I think you counted his age-34 season’s salary but not its WAR?

No, I was eyeballing on my phone and didn’t pick up that his ‘21 season was split in two. Looked like each one was its own season.

Slightly more encouraging but given the elbow problem Cole just developed I think it’s pretty risky to assume he follows their trajectories. Either that TJ surgery happens or he remains diminished by the problems it causes. Either way, risky investment.

Now if we’re just gonna spend freely, by all means take the risk. But assuming it’s zero sum then the cost of bringing back Cole is going to be a Rice-Jazz-Volpe-[insert scrub] infield with Dominguez in LF. I’d rather have Gleyber and a proper pair of corner infielders.

FWIW by simply doubting the wisdom of paying him, I’m certain I’ve guaranteed a dominant Gerrit Cole WS Game 1 performance with at least 20 “suck it, Hubert” comments from BBA! 😉

Nah, I’m going to be humble when the Yankees win the World Series 😂

I actually have to work late on Friday so I’ll miss the Knicks Pacers game plus the first few innings of Game 1 but for sure I’ll be following the games on my phone.

    Precious out for “2-4 weeks”?

After i plugged that into Google Translate for Knicks Medical staff, it came back that he is most out for the season.*

    * unless we have new medical staff that communicate openly

Bench: Deuce, Payne, one of Huk/Sims, Dadiet

I am not sure if Thibs will go with a nine man rotation. He actually played ten man rotations all through the pre season. Of course one of those ten was Precious. But I can see both Huk and Sims getting time with Sims playing power forward occasionally. Also he still could play Kolek some minutes if he wants to go small.

Well so much for the starting Precious idea…

Hart better find his effing game fast. Otherwise, we’ll be forced to start Deuce, and a Payne/Hart/Sims bench probably isn’t scaring anybody (I’ll believe Thibs will play a rookie serious minutes on opening night when I see it.)

I feel like the Mets are doomed. I hate y’all for making me pay attention to baseball.

Luckily I also feel like the Knicks are doomed Tuesday, so at least that’s status quo.

Picking up Cole’s 1yr extension option is an obvious no brainer move which the Yankees will obviously do.

I said so a month ago, but I’d let him opt out and sign Corbin Burnes for 8 years instead. Seems like the obvious move except for optics.

It might just come down to how he pitches in the world series. If he’s 2-0 with two dominant starts, he’s opting out and getting paid. If he’s 1-1 with 9.2 IP and a 5.40 ERA, he’ll have made a great case for the Yankees to walk away and invest in other areas.

This Dodgers lineup is a friggin’ nightmare. Nothing even resembling an easy out in that lineup, and if you don’t throw strikes they just kill you.

Yeah no his World Series performance will have absolutely nothing to do with how the Yankees view Cole. He’s staying regardless of how he pitches in the World Series and rightfully so.

    Hubert stick to basketball 😝

bunch of channel flipping going on now…

I really enjoy watching the mets play, pretty exciting team to watch…

dodgers are a solid club, mets are fiesty though…

I thought they did away with players chewing tobacco during baseball games?

I keep seeing these guys jawing away though on big brown globs in their mouth…

I tried chewing tobacco once, nearly passed out…that’s some strong stuff…

Jeff McNeil shouldn’t be starting in this game. I know that Iglesias hasn’t been playing great, but McNeil has no timing and has looked horrible in his ABs here.

Manaea just couldn’t get anybody out today. It was a great season. Next year’s team will look a lot different, but David Stearns will be picking the players so we should be good.

Pete Alonso, thank you for your contributions. Gonna miss you, big guy.

    Oh, and: Go Yankees

Even I know not to sleep on the Mets.

I am going to sleep, though. Wouldn’t be surprised if I wake up and see the Mets won.

aaron rodgers looks like a new player out there

He still threw that crucial pick. I think he’s just too old.

If the Dodgers hold on, shouldn’t they be favored over the Yankees in the World Series?

I think the Dodgers should be favored, even with their pitching injuries. The depth of the lineup is overwhelming.

It’s hard watching this Liberty game. The defense on both sides is WAY better than their ability to create shots, finish or make open shots.

I only turned it on in the fourth quarter, but this has been some fugly basketball

    But congrats to the Liberty!

Another oddity to my recent baseball time-travel: batting the slugger leadoff and the waifish shortstop cleanup. But it seems to work!

I hope the WNBA continues to thrive and only gets bigger and more popular but I just have a hard time watching such an inferior product to what I’m used to watching in the NBA.

Congrats to the Liberty, pretty crazy to win with Sabrina and Stewart shooting that bad..

The Jets are not serious. They should probably just tank for a QB and try to rebuild from scratch, but they’ll play out the season, win some games and go nowhere.

Congrats to the Liberty! Yeah, not the same product but I enjoyed watching the finals, so evenly matched, both teams left it all on the floor.

I had a blast at Barclays and am on cloud 9 but the level of play is usually higher than that lol

    The facts say otherwise.

They were 12th in percent spend this year, their highest mark by far in the Hal era.

    ?????

The past 5 seasons, they opened the season with the highest payroll, the second highest payroll 3 times and the third highest payroll once… I’m sorry, we have a different definition of penny pinching.

I honestly don’t get what the problem is. If you want him to allow Cashman to spend through every mistake he makes, I understand that from a fan’s standpoint, but not from a business standpoint.

My #lolKnicksSupv has told me he wants the Knicks to make the Finals just so they can lose. Just the ultimate troll.

Yall know I work in an office (and campus) of Dodger fans. Drake talked about 1v20… I am literally about to live it.

TBF most Dodger fans i know respect the Yankees. I just wonder how that’s going to be tested come this week lol

I think the Dodgers should be favored

As far as I can tell, the Dodgers don’t have any starting pitchers. And I don’t mean that in the barstool sports kind of way. I mean that quite literally.

In the baseball I remember, you needed to ride your aces through the post-season: Kevin Browns, Randy Johnsons, Josh Becketts, etc… but I’ve watched about 15 Dodgers games now and can’t name a single pitcher of theirs or recognize any of their faces except for the one guy who borrows Ohtani’s interpreter every now and then.

The Dodgers have two perfectly competent starters in Flaherty and Yamomoto, and those guys are lined up to both pitch twice in a seven game series. That leaves three games that would be started by Walker Buehler and the bullpen, and those are games where the Dodgers will hope to score lots of runs. Problem is they are very good at scoring lots of runs.
