Knicks Made Multiple Cap Saving Moves Over Several Years To Stay $300000 Under 2nd Apron

Articles above that i recommend:
1) We all like lineup projections and ex-KB Vertsberger has nice article about it on SNY.

2) ESPN and RealGM recap the moves made by the Knicks over the years to sign KAT and be under the 2nd apron (Amazing job by Brock Aller)

If you haven’t watched the Nova Knicks GQ interview you should go do it
It’s pretty mind-boggling that the Knicks are not only under the 2nd Apron, they aren’t even allowed to go over it this year…and have totally transformed the roster including three blockbuster transactions for players that have been coveted by various posters for a long time, but who were deemed unavailable, partially due to cap circumstances. What a stupendous job by Leon and his team, especially Brock Aller, for putting them in a position where they still have a bit of flexibility to tinker.
And I do sense that there will be another move before the deadline to address any resitual depth issues. I’m not sure whether they will look for a quality big or a better DDV replacement at the shooting wing than Shamet. A lot depends on the following:
-Mitch’s health
-How well the current backup C’s play
-How well they do in the first few weeks
-How the bench unit plays
-KAT’s defense
Ideally they will wait until things gel before doing anything. In a way, being limited by the 2nd apron will keep them from doing anything rash and shortsighted. I am totally expecting that even at full health, a significant issue is going to develop that any remaining trade flexibility is going to be essential to addressing. I also think that prices will come down as other teams are squeezed either by the aprons or roster crunches. Finally, when Precious’ salary slot opens up in January, that will only add to the flexibility to make an impactful trade.
One of the coolest things about the way the playoffs are shaking out is that the top 2 MVP candidates in the NL will go head-to-head and if the Guardians win, 3 of the top 5 will be participating.
As a Mets fan, I’ve moved beyond “It’s all gravy!” and now have expectations…which sucks because losing to either the Dodgers or the Yankees would really hurt. But I like our pitching enough to believe that we can compete with anyone. I know the Mets have gotten lots of dramatic clutch hits, but it’s been their pitching that has kept them in games even when the bats have been quiet. Game 3 vs. the Brewers and Games 1 and 4 vs. the Braves all could have slipped away if it were not for the pitching staff keeping things close.
Well, Sam Mitchell is probably getting fired:

Cybersoze, the SNY article by Vertsberger was good, but I suspect he’s wrong about one thing. I doubt Precious is going to be the first center off the bench. If there was one consistency between our two preseason games so far, it was that we didn’t do very well rebounding. Thibs mentioned this too. I think it’s going to be a real battle to be backup center between Precious, Sims and Hukporti. Sims could win it because of his rebounding.
If Precious wins the backup C spot, I’d say that means we still have a depth issue at C given Mitch’s chronic health issues. If we could rely on Mitch, then it wouldn’t be much of an issue. We’d be debating 3rd string. But we can be pretty certain Towns is going to miss some games. I don’t think starting Precious (or Sims) at C when Towns is ideal. Precious has even said publicly he prefers playing PF.
It’s early, but I think Hukporti is the best option. He may need to grow into the job a bit, but he has some athleticism, size, energy and some skills on both sides. If I were Thibs I’d play him some more in pre season and give him a chance to win the backup C job from Sims and just keep Precious at PF if he does.
I don’t watch that show, but it’s likely there’s more to that exchange than we know. It was very personal. Something his co host said put him over the top, but something has been brewing. Mitchell was pissed. I was fine with it until he doxed him on the rental property.
They are probably going to have to punish him in some way but I hope he doesn’t get fired over it. How about a suspension and apology? I’ve seen him on other shows and like him.
Here’s a thread from just after the 2022 draft just when we acquired Brunson and Hartenstein in free agency and re-signed Mitch.
While the purpose of posting it is not to take victory laps (well, maybe a little!) I just found that that 3-day window was one of the most consequential for the Knicks in their history in particular and for the NBA in general. There was a chain reaction that really shook things up league-wide. OKC drafted two stars and a solid bench player, setting the stage for iHart to become a finishing touch. BKN blew it up, eventually leading to Mikal becoming a star and being available to us. Gobert goes to MIN for a king’s ransom, facilitated by Minny acquiring the draft rights to Walker Kessler. That, and Naz Reid’s becoming a star-level player at KAT’s position, ultimately leads to KAT becoming available to us. That also lead to the Spida sweepstakes which might have derailed the entire rebuild for the Knicks.
I don’t think anyone anticipated that as of the end of June, 2022, not a single player currently on the roster was officially under contract with the Knicks. Mitch and Brunson were still UFAs, Sims was still on a 2-way deal, and only Trevor Keels was drafted. Sims became official on July 9th and the FAs became official on July 12.
In other words, in just over two year’s time, Leon has a completely new 14-man roster compared with what it was at the start of 2022 free agency…other than Sims and Mitch.
I don’t think anyone saw that coming.
“In other words, in just over two year’s time, Leon has a completely new 14-man roster compared with what it was at the start of 2022 free agency…other than Sims and Mitch.”
I should say, other than Sims and Mitch being sort of on the team via cap holds and/or retention rights.
I’m sure there is missing context and backstory, but if you can be provoked into being that unprofessional while on the air, then you’re probably a bit too loose of a cannon to keep around.
Saw RJ was trending on twitter and uh it was not what I expected
That RJ story seems bogus. I don’t care much either way, but it seems like an extortion attempt or an angry jilted hanger-on.
I knew RJ was gay the moment he committed to Duke.
(I’m joking!!)
Ohio State at Oregon, for a conference game…
I keep looking at the TV trying to make sense of it…nope…
I know there’s still and SEC and there is a Big-?? and that’s all I know and I don’t know what teams are in which
It’s kind of hard to care anymore
Sun Devils with a big win last night!
