There’s a lot of pressure on Boston tonight. If Dallas wins, they are back into the series going home and knowing they can win in Boston. Boston would obviously still be the favorite, but the unthinkable (blowing a 3-0 lead with home court) would be possible.

These finals have no narrative. No transcendent star against an evil empire (Doncic is not there yet, and is injured). No grit against substance. No spectacularly great team — the idea that the Celtics are the best ever is ridiculous.
Now if you have no narrative, you could compensate with pace. But no, the games are spaced like dim photons in the darkness between galaxies. Booooooring.
Game 1 was the lowest-rated non-Covid impacted finals game in 17 years. Game 2 rebounded a bit and beat last yearās games 2; however Game 3 was the 2nd lowest rated game 3 in 17 years. Itās hard to tell whether the ratings are affected by the layoff, the matchup, the non-competitive nature of the games, the lopsided series, or what, but interest seems to have been lackluster. I guess a Game 6 or 7 could still save things.
I think the combination of the layoff and spacing between games has hurt the momentum. Boston vs. Dallas is not exactly a rivalry either.

Reese and Clark are good for the game. I was sitting around yesterday and watched the game.
I don’t follow the WNBA and I will probably continue to not follow the WNBA, but there’s quite a narrative being set up here for Caitlin Clark. Came into the league the most hyped player ever. Had a tough rookie season in which she absorbed lots of hard fouls, and struggled at times on the court. Played on one of the worst teams in the league and didn’t seem to have teammates that had her back. Through it all, kept her head down, continued to say all the right things, and steadily improved.
I mean, you couldn’t ask for a better setup to a narrative arc. Eventually they’ll surround her with better players, bring in some enforcers, and she’ll kick everybody’s ass.
That makes one of us.
The Mets are back in the wild card hunt, now only 1.5 games out and riding some nice momentum. Some of the key players who were slumping miserably are not red hot, and the team has won 9 of 11.
So why exactly is noted bum David Peterson starting games for the big league team, while top prospect Christian Scott wastes bullets in Syracuse?

The Mets seem to have underachieved thus far, so maybe it’s just a regression to the mean. There are lots of places to mine some hidden production. Nearly every key players beyond JD Martinez and Marte has either been meh (Alonso, Nimmo), woefully underachieved (McNeil, Lindor, Diaz) or injured (Alvarez, Senga) Bader has been pretty good and Vientos is exciting, but you can’t win with so many holes in the lineup. Beyond Senga, the starting pitching has actually held up pretty well given how unheralded they are, but the bullpen has blown a bunch of winnable close games. Just an effective Diaz would probably have had them over .500 right now.
There is definitely a world where they all start playing to the backs of their baseball cards and move up into the thick of the wild card hunt, probably not catching the Phillies but finishing in like the 85-90win range, which for Mets fans would at least add some juice to the NBA offseason until football starts.
Canāt believe how many Euro2024 games are on tv. Absolutely glorious. Although I feel sad the Slovaks are about to put a spike in Belgiumās Golden Generation.

I didn’t know that it was ever there, or that it left.
Even with his abysmal start Lindor is still playing at his usual 5-6 WAR clip. A plus defensive SS with a 111 wRC+ is a very good player. With JD Martinez now hitting, and Francisco Alvarez back in action, the lineup is reasonably deep. Mark Vientos might just turn out to be the player Brett Baty was supposed to be.
Marte has been a real butcher in RF all year long, to the point where heās barely a plus player. Canāt throw and takes bad routes to balls. If his bat falls off at all heās unplayable. Second base is an abyss as McNeil doesnāt even look like a useful utility player.
Fully healthy Iād roll with a Senga-Scott-Severino-Manaea-Quintana rotation, with Megill moving to a relief role and Peterson joining Houser as a piggyback/long relief guy. You still have Butto in AAA as a quality depth option.
Itās not a great team but itās an interesting one. They were always going to top out at āfringe contenderā so my expectations are in line with that, but theyāre watchable. Lots of bad injury luck among their top hitting prospects but there are some more live arms in the high minors behind Christian Scott. Some of the failed AAA starters (Vasil, Hamel) might make useful relief pieces and Brandon Sproat is probably a top 100 prospect at this point. This was looking like a lost season in May so itās nice that theyāve turned it around.
I don’t know baseball advanced stats well at all, and guess I’m still old-school in thinking that a guy who hits .230 is a hole in the lineup. I’ve seen Lindor look terrible in a bunch of critical RBI situations, and his power numbers are meh, so knowing that he’s locked in at $30+M a year until 2031 is unsettling. I don’t know how to feel about Alonso…another .230 hitter whose proposed contract gives me the willies. And Nimmo is also hitting .230. And all of them are better than our 2022 batting champion!
I’m glad you reminded me of how bad Marte is in RF…he’s making me nostalgic for Rusty Staub. It doesn’t help that he’s playing on a sore right knee. But with the way those other guys have struggled at the plate, whatta ya gonna do? Too bad J.D is strictly a DH.
Seems like this little run is taking some heat off of Mendoza, at least for for now.

PG13 coming to Atlantic Division to be the 3rd best player on an Embiid/Maxey team, – is an expensive price to pay for saving ~ $5m aav on resigning OG but I’ll still pay it.
It will cost the Sixers a pretty penny to acquire PG13, and paying top dollar for an Embiid sidekick’s age 34-37 years, especially a guy who played 56 games or less in four of the last 5 seasons, might not end well.
League batting average is .241, so hitting in the .230s aināt what it used to be. Factor in walks and power, and Lindor is an above average hitter.
Acuna is a āmehā prospect, hitting a bit better lately in AAA but probably projects as a fringe regular at best and is no longer a top 100 prospect. He probably should have done another year at AA and is still relatively young for AAA, but he looks like a 40-45 FV player to me. The Metsā best hitting prospects have been hurt all year. Jett Williams might not play in 2024 after looking like a top 50 prospect last year, and Drew Gilbert, who is hopefully the heir apparent in RF, has been out all year too. Kevin Parada is a bust and is not one of the teamās top 30 prospects at this point. Brett Baty also has the strong whiff of complete bust.
Since it’s Metsblogger for the moment, anyone have a strong opinion for or against trading Alonso? I haven’t been following the team much at all this year, but it’s all the headlines ever say. It’d make me a bit sad, I think of him as something of the face of the franchise right now. It might have made sense when they were sucking things up and the idea was to blow it all up and start over, but now that the ship seems to be righting itself a bit…?
Re: the draft, Iām liking Filipowski a lot less after watching the game where Missi ate him alive last year. Even if you were to consider them different but equal as bigs, Missi is the guy Thibs would more likely use in his system. Although if they know they have iHart and Mitch locked up for sure, they might eschew a big altogether. That said, Iād much prefer Missi or even Edeyā¦ maybe even Bona in round 2.
ā¦and Scheierman is really growing on me with the other pick.
I’m coming around on Missi for the same reason. He’s an athlete and could be a very impactful rim defender that Thibs loves. This staff was able to coach Mitch a freak athlete into a great defender and I can see them doing that with Missi as well (though they failed to do the same with Sims).
I see Filipowski as more of a PF under Thibs with the ability to shift over to C in certain configurations. He’s a good hedge against iHart leaving but could get minutes as a backup 4 even if he stays. Don’t know if Filipowski is a good enough shooter to play the 4, doable, but he’ll need to improve like Obi did.
The Olympics are going to be “lit” once they get down the final 4-8. There are a lot of NBA players out there playing for other countries.
Rumor has it Frank Ntilikina is in one of his rare “healthy” periods after being out virtually all last season with a fractured tibia. He’s trying to make the French Olympic team. He’ll probably be playing in Turkey after that, but imo should be on our bench. š
I think the ideal draft for Thibs would be:
24. Missi
25. Dunn
38. Shead
I love Shead. He looks like a better defender than Dunn, just missing the size (or better to the extent his size allows, pound for pound or whatever). He also has some semblance of offensive skill.
I also love Scheierman if I haven’t said that yet.
So this is why I had to specifically request that one of the many TVs at the sports bar I was at on Saturday (Finn’s Corner, great spot) put the Liberty game on, despite them being a New York team playing an enormous game against the Aces competing with an Italy-Albania soccer game. The perceived flatness of this draft from around 7 through 25 or so makes things pretty unpredictable. I actually think it’s a very solid draft to have picks in our range–again, the weakness is at the top. The depth looks pretty good to me.
McCain (it’s a stretch, but let me hope), Collier, Holmes, Kolek, Furphy, Smith, Scheierman, Tyson, and Edey just off the top of my head are all guys I think are more intriguing than the average late first, and 2 of them should be available at 24/25.
The top is such a mess I almost feel bad for the teams with those picks. I’m pretty meh on Risacher and Sarr. Probably prefer Sheppard, Clingan, and Buzelis to them, and maybe some others.
I think of Filipowski more as a backup PF, i.e. more of an Obi/Precious replacement than a iHart replacement.
I would think that if iHart signs elsewhere, the Knicks are not going to go with either a rookie or one of Precious/Sims as a primary backup. They will fill that spot with a a vet via trade or mid-level FA. Someone like Plumlee or Zeller, for example. Even a guy like Mo Bamba might make more sense than a rookie.
But I DO think that Thibs would play a rookie as a 10-15 mpg back-up to Randle, i.e Obi 2.0. Filipowski might be a nice fit for that role, although there are other draftees that might fit that bill even better.
PS I was only kidding about Mo Bamba, he might have been my worst draft day take ever.I still can’t believe that he isn’t even a serviceable backup C. What’s funny is that I would have been thrilled if he fell to us instead of drafting Kevin Knox, and now its arguable that he was even a worse bust.

Scotto did a podcast with Stefan Bondy and Ian Begley to talk about all the usual topics: OG and iHart free agency, Thibs/Jalen/Julius extensions, the Bogey decision, trade targets, etc. Not a lot that’s new, but both of the beat writers seemed very confident in OG’s return, and fairly confident in iHart’s.
Maybe the most interesting thought, simply because it’s new and it’s from Begley (who doesn’t say stuff just to say it, and has good sources within the FO), was his response to the other two guys speculating that the Knicks will try to trade one or more of their picks:
I’m with TNFH in liking our draft position. There’s multiple guys projected there that I could see playing valuable rotation minutes and, more importantly, that fit the FO’s draft profile.
Maybe Begley sees the same thing or maybe he knows something. After all, we made 3 picks in 2022 not counting the Rokas stash.

I’d be shocked if they don’t use one of their 1st round picks, with the obvious exception being an important deal or deals that have to include both.
1. They have a couple of obvious needs on the bench.
2. They drained all the youthful upside and long term player assets by trading Quickley, RJ and Grimes. It makes sense to start replacing those quality young guys with new ones.
I’d say the most likely scenario is drafting one player in the first round. The second one could be used in a trade, but if they come up totally dry in the trade market, they may try to move up or roll it out.
The draft is 2 days now? Why? Will they have a day 2 green room? Will Mark Tatum announce the picks, or will a well-rested Adam Silver handle both rounds now? So many questions. Finally, will the NBA, in its quest for round-the-clock engagement via unnecessary protractions, move toward announcing one pick a day from June to early September, leading right into training camp?
Alan, that quote makes sense. If the top of the draft, no one is going to pay a lot to get there.
I feel like only a few of these cats can actually contribute to a winning Thibs team on day one:

2. Terrence Shannon Jr.
3. Baylor Scheierman
4. Dunn or Shead (defensively)

And I think we might be stuck making these picks unless we consolidate them in a trade up or sell one to Brooklyn. This is considered one of the weakest drafts in recent memory, so no one will want to let us kick the can down the road. We could trade a pick for a vet, but it might be tricky to do that before OG/iHart get sorted (unless itās for a star who is better than OG or IHart).
I really hope the Mets do a big sell off unless they are sitting over .500 in about a month. If so, it’ll be tougher to do that, of course. But, they need to be honest about competing with the Phils, Braves, and Dodgers (and Brewers, maybe). Probably time for a division winner in the NL to get to the WS.
No way they should be looking to extend Alonso. Get what you can for him next month and run with Vientos at 1b for the rest of the season. And, yes, give Baty one last chance to figure out the low breaking pitches that seem to haunt him.
I just can’t see their starting pitching holding up for a real postseason run. Too many short inning journeymen. And Christian Scott has yet to throw 100 innings in any season ever….he’ll be passing that soon this year, and they’ll probably need to shut him down later. He’s part of the future, don’t screw him up for a lame wildcard run.
Alonso, JD, and Severino might get them some decent prospects to continue to build for the near future. A few others guys might yield a flyers on some A ball or rookie league kids.

What has made these finals mostly lame is the Celtics are hardly playing like a juggernaut. The Mavs are just not meeting the moment at all. Doesn’t feel like we’ve gotten really high quality basketball outside of a few stretches.

Hauser buries 42% of his threes, has a 63% TS, and plays good defense… all for $1.3MM. I can’t imagine hating having that guy.

Iām taking my kids to subway series game 2 at citi next Wednesday. Which should be night one of the nba draft. Looking forward to seeing judge and Soto up close. When the first and second round of the playoffs were more exciting than the conference finals and finals, you have a problem. Ratings I imagine were pretty bad for these finals. All this on the heels on the new TV deals and losing Inside the NBA.

I’m surprised the NBA was able to pull out that TV deal. Lebron will be retiring soon and Curry isn’t far behind. These new young stars don’t have anywhere near the following of the former two.
Even though the Celts had a cakewalk, they did what they were predicted to do since they assembled the best top 6 rotation in the NBA. Kudos to Brad for being opportunistic. They should be heavy favorites in the East again next year unless something very dramatic happens, especially now that they can play loose. Hopefully we will give them some competition in the playoffs next year.

They could take a small step backwards next year. We have a couple of obvious holes on the bench that can be filled. That will give us a punchers chance against almost anyone. To get to that clear cut contender status we also need an upgrade in the starting lineup somewhere. Finding that player and fit is why they pay Leon the big bucks. Letās go!

I agree with most of this. My main qualm is the suggestion that Jrue is close to being washed up. He just turned 34, is in excellent health, and is not a big-3 kind of player on this team…he can coast and stay healthy. There is zero reason to believe that he will age any less gracefully than Al Horford.
As to KP, he played a lot more games and minutes in the last 4 years than the guy who might have to be our starting C if we lose iHart to free agency. And he’s not even 29 yet. Neither is Brown or Tatum. And Derrick White turns 30 in a few days.
And they have some draft assets to make moves to replace Horford and shore up their bench. Brad is probably not going to stand pat. They also no longer have to worry about being perceived as chokers, or about whether Brown and Tatum are compatible.
Leon definitely has his work cut out for him, as do all the other execs in the East.

So two critical players to their success this year will inching down while a lot of the other contenders (other than maybe the Bucks who are getting older) will be inching forward.

They have great management and some assets to go along with Tatum and Brown who are both young enough for another variation on this team. Thatās not a tough retooling. But they still will have to do it as successfully as they built this team to keep the same gap between them and the rest of us.
