Heat and Pacers played to tie the Knicks for 4th, and the Heat lost. Great. Pacers won but come on, against the Wizards it’s very hard to lose. LOL
And Sixers also lost so we’re 1.5 games behind the 3rd. Be happy, this is what we were waiting for all these (dreadful?) years.

In the article posted above, there is a nice breakdown of the stats behind the Knicks’ 5-0 record since the trade. In a nutshell, it’s:
-Rebounding (specifically iHart)
-Ball movement (we are generating 20% more potential assists, are passing more times per game, and are leading the league in fast break points during the stretch)
-3-pt shooting (was already 8th in NBA but has been really good since the trade, like OKC-level, thanks to OG, Grimes and Deuce)
FT shooting (even though IQ and RJ were both very good, the team, particularly Brunson, has been crazy hot.)
What they didn’t point out is that we played 4 teams that are ranked 20th (MIN) or worse in offensive rating. But beating Minny and Philly who were pretty much at full strength is still impressive.
25-16-7 on 13 shots… sheesh… It finally hurts less now that we have don’t have a screaming need for someone to play his position, though, like how Brunson mitigated the Halliburton gaffe.

Again, I wonder if the FO would be willing to move Mitch (when healthy) and go all-in on iHart as the starting center.
The Mitch news presents a dilemma.
Not so much if he comes back who should start. I think it’s clear for this season and the playoffs at least, that iHart has won the job. Even if Mitch comes back at the end of the regular season and gets a few weeks of games in before the playoffs, I imagine he’s going to be hella rusty and it would be unwise to throw him out with the starters.
But the idea of Mitch being available for the bench unit for the playoffs makes me VERY excited.
Only problem is. What do we do in the meantime? Do we just hope Sims and Precious can hold it down and iHart doesn’t get hurt? Do we waste a draft assett for a back up big in a trade? Or do we just go out and get someone like Noel who isn’t currently playing or pick someone up off the waiver wire after the trade deadline?
I’m not sure what the answer is.

If you already read Macri’s newsletter you can skip this post, but some interesting factoids in there. First:
“In the 32 games before the OG trade, the Knicks scored 212 points off cuts (6.63 PPG). In the 5 games since the deal, they have scored 57 points off cuts, which translates to an average of 11.4 PPG (a +4.77 increase). 11.4 points off cuts per game would be good enough for 9th in the league (for the entire season, the Knicks currently rank 24th in this stat according to Synergy and 26th according to NBA.com). Granted, it is a small sample size, however I think it is important because if it continues, it adds another layer to this already dynamic offense.”
And:
“The original starting five this year, with Grimes and RJ, had an assist percentage of just 55.3, which would be the worst in the league. After swapping Grimes for DiVincenzo, their offensive rating leapt by nearly six points per 100 possessions, but the assist rate only rose to 57.0 – still a borderline last place number.
The new starting five? They’re assisting on 72.2 percent of their made baskets, which would be first in the league by a wide margin.
This figure will obviously come down, but it’s perhaps the most encouraging sign for their long term ceiling with this core moving forward.”

How weird is it that I’m now MAD that Doncic isn’t playing tonight because I want us to play teams at their absolute full strength?
I am not used to this feeling. Normally I’d think “oh good! Doncic is out! Maybe we can win this game…nah, Hardaway will probably torch us.”
It almost makes too much sense.
1. He’s injury prone. That makes having and paying a high quality backup almost essential
2. He can’t make FTs and could become unplayable at times in the playoffs
3. I-Hart is also young, but more versatile on offense and durable. He’s also at least arguably better overall.
4. If we make a star trade some young talent and salary is going to have to go out. It would be better if it came from an area of duplication.
5. Paying both Mitch and I-Hart could become problematical and reduce flexibility elsewhere
Do we think Thibs is (in any way) responsible? Haha. Or do these guys — OG, iHart, Devo — just bring along passing and cutting in their personal kit bags?

Swifty, while I get what you are saying I am nowhere near your level of enthusiasm. Dallas on the road is a tough out. Their 2 headed monster would present us with a challenge as OG can only guard 1 of them. Every game is meaningful given the EC bunched up standings. Grab what the injury gods give us. If Doncic has to miss a game, better against us than against the Sixers, Cavs, or Indy in Feb.

Summary. I love the chemistry. It’s hard to see any change that I would make. I love the ball movement. I love the defense. I love this team. Hartenstein offers a lot of what Mitch does but so much more. If Mitch returns, he comes off the bench. I can’t have that poor foul shooter in the game with the game on the line and he has no post-up game at all. Hart and DDV’s intangibles aren’t reflected in statistics.
Kudos to Leon Rose for constructing this roster. Kudos to Thib for not listening to any of the know-nothing talking-heads on sports talk radio.

Because we only have his early bird rights, we can’t offer him as much as a cap space team can. Katz suggested the highest we can go is $16.1 million, including attainable bonuses. If someone offers him 16.2, let alone goes into the 20s, we can’t match.
A lot of these favorable stats we are talking about feed off ball and player movement. I love the way Kerr and Pop incorporated some of the triangle into their offenses. Guys are always moving and cutting, the ball moves quickly etc.. It’s not always one guy dribbling around trying to create something.
Stylistically RJ had a tendency to stand around and dibble a lot when he got the ball. So do Randle and Brunson. OG moves around a lot to keep the spacing good and if he gets the ball and has nothing, he moves it quickly. DDV is like an energizer bunny out there. IMO we are playing a somewhat better brand of offense with more movement, but imo Brunson still dribbles too much at times and Randle still holds the ball and dribbles too much.
I’m still pleasantly surprised that OG was available for just RJ, IQ and the likely 31st pick in this year’s draft, especially given the animosity between the Knicks and Raps. Now it wouldn’t surprise me if Masai was being squeezed behind the scenes by OG’s agent, maybe by letting him know that OG would become a UFA for any team other than the Knicks, so he aimed for the best haul he could get. And from Toronto’s perspective, it was a reasonable haul, maybe even a very good one, considering the alternatives.
I think that in retrospect, I both undervalued OG and overestimated the cost of a trade in draft assets when we were discussing the trade a year ago. But three things sort of changed the equation:
1) IQ not being extended and becoming a RFA
2) RJ not progressing after a hot start and looking more and more like an overpay
3) Our smallness being exposed by good teams that had length across their lineup, including but not limited to a lack of a backup 4
That said, I honestly think I would have been fine with it if the same exact trade went down in January 2023, as even then I felt that OG would “fit like a glove.” But the timing plus the expectation that TOR wouldn’t deal with us made this a very positive development.

My guess is that we only have to worry about teams very close to NY and LA unless some team wants to wildly overpay. His wife’s career will still be a factor in his decision and he’s already said publicly he loves NY. One thing for sure is we can’t lose both unless we have an even better option.
Fine by me. We need the win since Miami, Cleveland, and Indy have this nasty habit of winning games they are supposed to lose lol. If we don’t create some separation while Garland, Mobley, Butler, and Haliburton are out- we could be 6th come postseason with how surprisingly good Orlando has been playing. With or without Haliburton, I expect Indy to slow down a little because they don’t play enough defense to continue to outscore teams, so we can probably keep them behind us. But if we don’t keep Miami and Cleveland behind us, we are going to have seeding issues once they get healthy
Re: Mitch. Leaving aside the weird communications we get on injured players on the team, flash back a few seasons ago when it was strongly hinted that Mitch would recover from his foot injury in time for the play-offs, did not, and was seen in a walking boot just prior to next season’s training camp. Given that we are playing well the FO would be foolish to carry the risk of Mitch not returning, particularly because it would not be just his absence but a worn down iHart. If and when he comes back is the time to re-assess the C minute allocation. And if I remember correctly the key to dealing with Mitch’s absence that time was not necessarily the play of Nerlens, but the play of Taj who took Nerlens’ backup minutes.

I am wondering whether RJ is shooting so well because he’s in more of a SG role being guarded by smaller guys and finishing and getting better shots or whether he’s actually shooting the ball better (random noise) or a little of both.
That teams look pretty good post trade if they can get 100% healthy and don’t trade Siakam.

I don’t think I-Hart would leave in that scenario, but if you are the Knicks, you have to eliminate that uncertainty. Being left out without either center and no cap space is the worst case scenario here (unless they are getting Embiid). That’s why I don’t see them trading Mitch until the offseason or next year – if they do it at all. He’ll probably be kept until a star trade is available.

For the first 5 games, before Poeltl’s injury and Porter’s spot start, he was the “official” SG, yersterday the Raptors started IQ and Schroeder and he went back to play SF more.
Anyway for what I’ve seen so far has been a bit of both.
Just like we got better space with OG (and I-Hart) instead of him (and Mitch) he took advantage of Toronto’s room in the paint.
He’s shooting 59.3% on 2FG (+17% from his Knicks days), it’s only 6 games and he will regress to the mean but for Toronto so far so good…
The 3-lefties were always a “congestion” problem in NY, too similar “working areas” and only one ball…
And we’re enthusiastic for OG so everyone’s happy.
Yeah, but unfortunately we don’t have cap space. So unless it’s a sign and trade, meaning we’ll be losing the assets we tried to save by sending him to Toronto, we can’t get him back.
The one thing I noticed from RJ is that he seems to be passing more quickly with the Raptors. The rest is basically shooting fluctuation.

The part in the IQ article where he mentions the Julius text explains a lot about “Julius is losing it”. The man cares, deeply. And his teammates know it.
I don’t think baseless assumptions about what Mrs Hartenstein wants are particularly valuable. The expected earnings of her entire career could be less than the delta of one season at what OKC can offer vs the Knicks. And for all we know the woman might want to retire and raise kids.

OKC would be pretty fierce with Hartenstein at C rebounding and protecting the rim. He’s almost the perfect piece for them. Let’s hope they acquire some other big.
I won’t go searching for my posts from this summer where my one big worry about the team was starting center and Mitch. He came out of the gates great but he never improved his FT shooting and he didn’t display any new (or first) offensive post moves. He’s elite on the boards but what else? Hartenstein has a variety of skills and yeah, he can rebound too.
Mitch is elite on the boards, on defense, and the best in the history of the nba at low usage finishing.
Luka is out tonight, but Kyrie is back in full force. He is dubious at best from a personal standpoint, but on the court he is still quite a force to be reckoned with. It is easy to forget that he is still there.

Third fiddle in two championship teams (Bucks ’71, Bullets ’78), well above average defender, solid rebounder…
When I started watching NBA games he was at the tail end of his career (retired after ’82) but in his prime he was an underrated semi-star (4 ASG, 2nd team All-NBA and 1st team All-Defense in ’79).

I think we’re approaching the center question the wrong way. Yes, Mitch is often hurt, but it’s not congenital or a problem that keeps getting worse, it seems as much hard physical play and just bad luck. iHart gets hurt pretty much every game but it’s mostly scratches and being hit in the face (the guy really does get hit in the face a lot). So far.
Seems to me you do whatever you can to keep them both. Centers go down all the time, it’s the nature of the beast (unless you’re built like Vucevic, but even the indestructible Adams is out).
May not be possible, but the two-headed beast is the goal here. They really like each other, so if it’s 24 minutes each then maybe that works. And they are different in ways that make it interesting (the obvious being iHart to end games when it’s close and foul shots are important).
It’s a luxury, sure, but maybe we finally deserve nice things?

mitch i love you but the emphasis for the last part there should be on history. he’s not even in the top 5 of rotation center 2p% over the past 2 seasons and his volume has dipped so low that if you dropped him all the way down to kevin looney 2p% levels it would cost a mere 0.2 fg/game — and that’s ignoring the times he got fouled and missed a ft. mitch the finishing god is mostly a fossilized treasure.
Mitch was better than Hartenstein last year, but Thibs was also forcing iHart to play like Mitch. Thibs is finally letting iHart play like iHart and he’s been excellent. We’re getting the player a lot of people expected after his season in LA.
Fwiw, there were reports of iHart playing hurt for a good portion of last year, so I’m not sure how much that really means, and it’s not as if Mitch was really outplaying him by that much this year if at all.
Bob Dandridge is one of the most underrated players in NBA history. He was a two-way all-star and a very tough and clutch offensive player with a both very good post-up game and face-up off the dribble game…silky smooth and strong. In the back-to-back finals years for the Washington Bullets, he was a monster in the playoffs, arguably the most impactful player on the court in both series. I knew he was good before that, but didn’t realize how good until watching those playoffs.
I don’t think OG is similar…Dandridge was far more polished of an offensive player and as much of a guard as a forward. To me, OG is more of a combo-forward that has a limited but effective offensive game that fits these times perfectly.

In terms of impact, one guy who comes to mind is Bobby Jones…not a polished scorer but someone who could guard anyone and couldn’t be left open but wouldn’t necessarily create. Probably should have played more minutes and started more than he did.

Now that Katz confirmed we can give iHart 175% of his current salary with the likely incentives, I feel pretty good about our ability to hang with any realistic offer. With 8% raises, we can offer him something in the ballpark of 4/$73M.
Without speculating as to his wife’s geographic preferences, would it blow anyone’s mind if he would prefer to be the starting center for the New York Knicks for $73M as opposed to the Oklahoma City Thunder for $80M? Not that I think they’re spending $20M AAV on a center anyway when they already have a budding star in Chet.
Of course, I’m burying the lede here a bit by referring to him as the “starting center” and we’ll have to sort that out. But by the time we’re negotiating with him we’ll probably have a firm grasp of what we can promise in terms of his role moving forward.
I don’t think it is ideal to invest $30M AAV in the C position if it’s not a star…but it would certainly be okay by me. Either guy could be a trade piece in the future at those numbers.

We’ll be in the lux tax at some point, we might as well go into it with as many valuable pieces as possible. The first tax level isn’t nearly as punitive as the 2nd, it’s mostly about Dolan bucks. We can also use Mitch as a trade chip to improve elsewhere, if needed.
I could see Indiana trying to move Turner back to PF and throwing a bunch of money at Hartenstein if he keeps this up.
@mike Thanks for the thread – somewhere back in June 2022 or so is when I first proposed the RJ to Toronto trade. I don’t know if we could have done it straight up then (Fournier as filler), but that would have been ideal. Losing IQ really hurts. And Cyber, that piece got me. Damn.
But yeah, this team is clicking, and if Mitch is back for the playoffs, we could do some damage. Celts are better, but I’d feel ok against almost every other team in the East.
Speaking of the Celts, there’s a good article about their defense in the Athletic as well. The thing that jumped out at me was the “peel switch” – we could really benefit from working on that with IHart/Mitch.
I mean, sure, in this wonderful world where the highest bid for iHart is just a tiny smidge higher than our best offer, we have nothing to worry about.
But in the real world…
1. We know the Thunder think a strong C is their final piece.

Why do we take it on faith that OKC is desperate for a center? Holmgren is already 3rd among centers in EPM and 12th overall. He’s the ideal modern NBA C, the unicorn we wished KP was.

Consider Bruce Brown, I don’t think anyone saw Indy making a $22m/yr offer, but they did. Hartenstein hasn’t made so much money that he’d scoff at a couple extra million even if it’s in a lousy city for a lousy franchise.
And really, if he does keep up this level of play, reminiscint of his time in LA, then he’d have earned a $20M/yr deal.

Except that when he came to the Knicks he was on record saying that he wanted NY or LA because of his wife’s career. It was a factor in coming to the Knicks to begin with.
I don’t know their values or priorities but sometimes “happy wife equals happy life” is worth more than a few million when the money you already have plus the next contract is already more than anyone should need to be happy and you are record now saying you love NY.

When it comes to our ability to keep iHart we’re really all just speculating at the end of the day but I’m cautiously optimistic based on the teams that project to have cap space. I’m also confident the front office is planning appropriately, which is a weird feeling.
I mean, if we’re still worried about whether 4/$73M will be enough to keep Hartenstein by the end of the season I’ll be very happy. Definitely not ruling it out, seems like he’s genuinely very good!

As for Mitch, I see no reason to entertain trading him. At $14mm he’s a perfectly priced bench player. And a second unit with him and Hart would be awesome.

Let me make a gramatical point here. The Knicks said Robinson would be re-evaluated in 8-10 weeks after the surgery. It seems like people are thinking of that as the same as the earliest possible return. But the words don’t mean that. They just mean they will assess his healing. My guess is he’s in a cast and they will do X-rays and other tests. Even if he looks good in the X-rays, I can’t see him as ready to return until the cast is off and he gets up to speed physically. That may not be right away. And if the healing is slow, it could be much longer. I don’t see re-evaluated as incompatible with out for the season, no matter how unfortunate that seems.
Given what happened the last time Mitch was out for a while, he may come back looking like that guy who plays Reacher…
