I’ll start with the mitigating circumstances:
we were hosed by the refs. They were bad all night but were particularly awful during the decisive stretch of the 4th, when we had just took the lead back and they start whistling a string of bogus fouls, starting with an incredible fake moving screen on I-Hart.

Refereeing has been a leaguewide problem all year long (and last year too), I’ve never seen such a low level of officiating in the NBA (it’s more or less the norm in Europe), I hope they’ll be able to straight it up before the playoffs.

    Excuses exausted.

    Good Things:

    – They fought despite being 5 vs 8 for most of the night.

    – Grimes. He had a good game, then someone sit him too much on the bench just when he was hot.

    – RJ. He makes me mad at least 4 times every single game but he’s playing much better lately.

    Bad things:

    – Our defense, or to be more accurate, Julius Randle’s defense has fallen off a cliff. Brunson is a sieve and was targeted all night (and even abused one-on-one by the ghost of Kyle Lowry), but Randle’s (and sometimes Barrett’s) slow rotations killed us.
You can live with one lousy defender, you can’t with multiple traffic cones.
If every game is going to be a shootout we’ll need everyone to be his best sharpshooting version and that rarely happens.

    – IQ is Bench Mob’s scoring punch and he’s been bad in the last 5 quarters, we can’t count on Obi or the Hart Foundation to bear the offensive weight.
In games like this I’d rather try Fournier for 3-4 minutes. If he’s hot he can stay in otherwise you’ll send him back to the bench, but having a good shooter on the bench and not using him when other’s shots don’t fall is masochistic.
Same goes for Deuce. Can’t you just try him for 5 minutes on blossoming All-Star Gabe Vincent? Do you rather let Gabe Vincent screw you? Gabe Fucking Vincent?

    Next:
if you’re not worried after home losses to the Charlotte Dregs and the Minnesota Skeleton Crew, if you’re not worried that our last two opponents shot 57% from 3, if you think everything’s okay and this team is sailing into warm caribbean waters, you’re more optimistic than me. 😀
No matter the strenght of schedule I still think we can beat anyone and we can lose to anyone so I’m not in prediction mood, and tonight back-to-back against the feisty Magic isn’t a cupcake, I hope we’ll be ready.

    Brunson B-
Offensive numbers are good, turnovers (5!) and matador D are not.

    Randle C
9:4 TO/AST is better than usual, but 6 rebounds are too few plus he didn’t shoot well (6-15 before his copyrighted stats stuffing basket). And the defense… excuse me, what “defense”?

    Barrett A-
Efficient shooting, good from the line (7-7) and 5:3 AST/TO is acceptable, plus 6 boards. He defended better too, not well, but better.

    Grimes A
Relatively to role expectations the MVP of the game. 12 shots after the single in the last game. Too long on the bench in the 4th.

    Mitch B-
Question: is he back block-chasing too much?
On the other hand he and I-Hart can’t move without been whistled for something (I’m pretty sure I heard a call for “broken rear light”).

    Quickley C-
In a mini-slump, I’m positive about a revenge tonight (fingers crossed).

    Hart B
He did some goods things, but we’re spoiled.

    Hartenstein C
He has by far the worst whistle in the League, half of his fouls are not called when someone else does them. But it wasn’t a good game and he had 3 turnovers.

    Toppin C
This is like reading Kafka’s Metamorphosis.
Former NCAA Player Of The Year Obi Toppin has become Emmenthaler* Bertans.
    Transformation complete.

    McBride NA
Gabe Vincent and Kyle Lowry sent a thank you note.

    Thibs B
Didn’t like his game calling tonight, it’s the kind of game that exposes his idiosyncrasies (no Deuce for defense except the 26 seconds cameo to preserve Brunson at the end of first half, no Evian for offense when the bench couldn’t score, no optimal use of Grimes’ hot hand). To be fair his team as usual didn’t quit and was killed by the refs all night long despite his relentless effort and loud screams, hence the “not so bad” grade.

    * He was a generic swiss cheese coming out of college, now he’s… matured 🙂

Well, now we need to win tonight, i don’t care that we’re on a back to back, we must win, period. After the game they’ll have time to rest, because we only play next monday, hosting the Rockets. If we win these 2 games, then we’ll host the Heat next wednesday to seal the deal on the 5th seed. They’ll be on a away back to back, after playing in Toronto the day before.

Yeah, Max, i’m very curious to see what the L2M report will say about it.

it might be unprecedented that we are 7th in SRS and heading for the 5th seed, while our three minutes leaders have played 1424 minutes together at -3.1 / 100. That’s a bit worse than orlando and indiana.

    From the last thread:

I sense that it’s happening and it’s time for the coach and players to adjust to the adjustments made to stop them. Randle’s temper, Brunson’s defense, Mitch’s foul shooting – we have to expect these weaknesses and the others exploited.

I agree, but on one hand this is bad, and on the other this will get us more ready to play the playoffs without having a big surprise on the adjustments made to stop us.

WTF are the Blazers doing? They don’t stand a chance getting to the play-in now, they should be trying to catch the Magic for 5th in the draft.

Clyde’s comments were really moving, you could feel the love he has for the Captain, you can understand the feeling, the pain for the loss of a lifetime friend, the flood of memories. He and Breen sounded on the verge of tears many times.

It’s tough to shake the feeling that in games with playoff intensity, the team with the best player tends to win. That’s what last night felt like to me–a hard fought game that came down to them having Jimmy Butler and us not. Obviously that’s a hell of an oversimplification, but man I would really like to have that guy.

Silver lining: I’m sure this will look stupid soon, but it feels like this particular RJ “stretches” Barrett stretch is being fueled by legitimately better decision making as opposed to obviously anomalous shooting. If we get this version of RJ for the rest of the season and the playoffs (Willis Reed sized “if”), we’re going to be a handful.

the refs were bad… but from my view… the refs are bad every year… and there’s always a handful of especially infuriating games a year that don’t go our way….

i think the problem is that it hasn’t actually gotten all that better… and that’s generally because the nba puts little effort into improving the product…. i imagine that’s also because the nba referee union is not really all that motivated to get better either which is an even bigger problem…

the media also hasn’t really put the league’s foot to the fire despite fan outcries either… probably because they don’t want to bite the hand that feeds… or possibly other reasons… but one thing we do have is more data available about who’s officiating and what happens in those games thanks to betting sites….. and these tendencies.. which are sometimes fairly extreme…. have a fairly big impact on the game… and it’s not discussed outside the sports gambling community for whatever reason……

out of all the major sports they have by far the most impact on the game… you can mostly credit the offensive explosion the last few years purely on how often referees are sending people to the line…. and because of that the nba should spend more effort being transparent and improving that product…. and to their credit they’ve taken SOME steps… but at this point it’s not enough…..

It felt like yesterday was just Miami executing and hitting their shots down the wire, while we had a stretch of missing some bunnies toward the end, shots that weren’t stupid but just didn’t go in. Miami’s really disciplined, and maybe Butler should get extra credit for that (and Spo), but we just clanked some.

We were also a step slow and ball-watched at times. I thought the effort was there for much of the game, but there was just enough slacking off to give them room (that Adebayo dunk through Mitch was a good example).

And yeah, a terribly reffed game. I will say we’ve had some terribly reffed games in our favor during the recent stretch (we tend not to notice those as much, eh), as well as against. It’s a horrible job and I’d rather drink bleach than do it, but it’s also just a shame when bad calls (or no calls) significantly alter the outcome.

Interesting to see more stories about some of the teams really going ballistic about it, most recently the T-Wolves.

WTF are the Blazers doing? They don’t stand a chance getting to the play-in now, they should be trying to catch the Magic for 5th in the draft.

    tHe CuLtUrE thO

I know this is gonna sound crazy when the Heat put up 127 points, but I actually don’t think our defense was that bad last night. They made some really difficult shots (the killers were Strus’ 27 footer and Herro’s contested 3 from the top of the key) And it wasn’t like Butler was waltzing to the hoop, he’s just a guy who knows how to get to his spots and finish.

Maybe you could argue that in the first quarter Gabe Vincent aka Sumner was getting easy baskets but in the second half I don’t think we defended all that badly. Miami just had it going.

Wow THCJ that is incredibly moving. Two of the most genuine guys in sports broadcasting letting it all out. Great stuff.

I hope Clyde knows how much we cherish him. Mike too.

Yeah, i hope so. They are amazing.

If starting is that important to Quickley, then you can always offer him the SG slot. I figure if you pay IQ, give him 30+ minutes a night, and treat him like a starting PG who just happens to come off the bench then he won’t mind. I’m thinking the mantra is more about style and quality of play rather than actually starting.

We’ve been playing over our head for the last month or so since we acquired Hart. We were due for a comedown. That said, with one more game against the Heat we need to be take care of business down the stretch or risk falling to 6th (would this even be that bad?).

We currently have the 13th pick in the draft. It’s a half game out of 10th* one one side and 17th.

    *Pick doesn’t convey if it’s 10th

I’m think we are getting a bit of a preview of the playoffs in that teams are going to start targeting Brunson on defense and doubling Randle more. Having Brunson should ease some of the problems on offense we had against the Hawks in the playoffs, but we have to do a better job of protecting and helping Brunson and he has to do a better job also. I’m not worried about Brunson being a target. Virtually every team has a weak defender on the court, but I am worried getting good enough and consistent enough defense from Randle and RJ to compensate.

I’m starting to feel like maybe RJ is finally turning a corner in accepting his role and making better decisions. That’s going to help.

It’s nice to be complaining about the refs this time of year, instead of complaining about Maurice Ndour.

@NY_KnicksPR: Jalen Brunson (sprained right hand) is questionable for tonight’s game at Orlando.

@NY_KnicksPR: Mitchell Robinson (contused right knee) is questionable for tonight’s game at Orlando.

Quickley taking over the PG spot when Brunson hits his decline years would be ideal.
