So the Athletic posted its list of the 25 greatest players of this century.
I looked at it without making my own ranking, and definitely have a number of quibbles. So as not to spoil it for anyone who prefers to do their own ranking before looking, I’ll refrain from commenting for a bit.
Where is Max? Has anybody “seen” him? I hope, like Bruno, his absence is because of being busy in a good way. 🙂
ok z-man thanks
i guess one has to be subscribed to the athletic in order to see it tho
Only the Giants could have a Kafkaesque coaching situation and only be partially metaphorical.
Yeah, no David Lee?? 🤭😂
Owen will be devastated…
Insane night of NBA games yesterday. I’m still mad that the Wizards blew it against the Pistons.
Can’t believe Cade’s 40 point triple double is getting more attention than the fact that he missed 31 shots. 31!
Cade dropping 46 points on 45 shots is a real throwback line. I wonder when was the last time a guy missed more than 30 FGAs in a single game.
Just for reference, here is the list in alphabetical order:
Giannis Antetokounmpo
Carmelo Anthony
Kobe Bryant
Steph Curry
Anthony Davis
Luka Doncic
Tim Duncan
Kevin Durant
Kevin Garnett
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander
James Harden
Dwight Howard
Allen Iverson
LeBron James
Nikola Jokic
Jason Kidd
Kawhi Leonard
Steve Nash
Dirk Nowitski
Shaquille O’Neal
Chris Paul
Paul Pierce
Jayson Tatum
Dwyane Wade
Russell Westbrook
“I wonder when was the last time a guy missed more than 30 FGAs in a single game.”
the answer is never because the previous record was exactly 30 missed shots by kobe bryant on november 7 2002 at boston (17 of 47 in a 98-95 OT loss)
in more recent times dejounte murray missed 26 shots (interestingly in a 123-122 OT win also against boston) on march 28 2024 (18 of 44)
Possible omissions: Ray Allen, Manu Ginobili, Pau Gasol, Kyrie Irving, Dame Lillard, Jalen Brunson…
If someone could ARCHIVE the article, that would settle the debate PERIOD. I would wonder what site that IS.
On October 28, 1962, Wilt Chamberlain missed 37 shots. He had 53 points on 23-60 shooting in an OT loss.
bbref only has from the 1983-1984 season onward wilt probably missed a lot of shots fairly often
All of Wilt’s game logs are available on B-R.
wow kevin love is toiling away at 13 minutes a game for the utah jazz now he makes about $4M a year but hes made $276M over his career so im sure hes fine with that and his model wife
Kobe above Jokic is silly. Also Shaq is underrated in my book. And btw reader mode is quite good in some cases, both on mobile and desktop.
im sure all of wilts game logs are on bbref when i said that it was only from 1983-1984 onward i was specifically referring to their listing of players who have missed the most shots in a single game: https://www.basketball-reference.com/leaders/fgx_game.html
RIP, Michael Ray Richardson.
JerrySeinfeldThatsAShameDotGif
There’s definitely a number of players on that list whose names I consider to be bigger than their games.
Haven’t thought about who’s missing yet, but to me Jokic should be #3. At least.
I’d also way rather have Nash on my team than Chris Paul, although I admit to a bias against the latter (smarmy little %$#@).
Also never fond of Carmelo, but putting the two Ja(y)son’s above him (Kidd and Tatum) seems inappropriate.
Giannis and Shaq also feel too low, but not sure who they displace.
It isn’t often that you see the GM fired before the coach but that’s what happens when you make one of the all-time stupid trades.
I know Jokic is amazing and it is arguable to rank him higher than Kobe, but Kobe was 9X first team and 3x second team all-defense, while Jokic was never even in the running. Defense is half of the game, and Kobe is an all-time great defensive player. But as with many of these lists, defense is woefully discounted.
I would make my top 5:
LeBron
Duncan
Shaq
Kobe
Steph
Next 5:
Durant
Jokic
Giannis
Garnett
Wade
Jason Kidd is another guy who gets dinged because he wasn’t a prolific scorer. He is very arguably in the top 10 because a) he was a great defensive player and b) he made his teammates better to a greater degree than just about every player on the list. He should be no lower than the low teens.
Garnett gets dinged because he toiled away on mediocre Minny teams before going to Boston. He was a great 2-way player.
damn i hated seeing that about sugar ray (only 70 years old) he was playing when i first started watching the knicks in ’78 loved those teams with mike glenn spencer haywood toby knight bob mcadoo joe meriweather earl the pearl monroe marvin human eraser webster and of course ray williams brother of gus from mt vernon ny i believe
cant help but think that wemby and sga will go back and forth all season vying for the mvp award hopefully wemby can stay healthy and play in enough games this year
I also thought that, he was scary.
If I take Z-man’s top 10 as a benchmark, after the top 3 that is a lot of whiffed draft picks. Makes you wonder if the quarter of teams currently tanking are doing the right thing.
kg enjoyed being scary and his personality was tailored that way as well
David Lee is absolutely a terrible omission but not having Manu on there is a travesty.
Certainly over AD at the very least
I do enjoy that the Mavs leaked to Shams the exact time Nico was getting fired.
In honor of 11/11 I’m going to double down on last night’s Marvin Bagley idea.
I have no delusions about upside or anything. I’d expect him to be a 0.0 to -1.0 BPM player. But I think that would be enormously valuable to us this year, and I’d be willing to seriously overpay for a big who can give us 16 cromulent minutes a game at either PF or C.
I’m not completely out on Yabu but definitely want to hedge that bet. I don’t think Huk has any value to this team at all this year, and I’d be happy to trade his potential for something real right now.
The extent to which I’d be willing to overpay is surprising. I’d want to get it done with Huk or Kolek and some of our shitty 2nds, but if push came to shove I’d probably be willing to give Washington either Dadiet or their own seconds. I think the need for an adequate third big justifies the cost.
(And I can’t imagine any world where Washington wants to keep him. They’re going to tank and they don’t have his bird rights.)
Shocker – Nico Harrison shitcanned.
Will always be remembered for making the dumbest trade in NBA history, possibly sports history.
chris paul and anthony davis (only 5 games thus far this season) are still playing i had forgotten that either of them still exist as players
Jokic’s best assist & reb per 36 seasons double or almost double Kobe’s best.
Jokic’s best 3P% was .417 to Kobe’s .383.
Jokic was top-20 in the league that season and better adjusting for league average.
Jokic’s best season in stl/g he finished 2nd in the league. Kobe never finished higher than 9th in the league.
Kobe’s best TS+ is 107 Jokic’s is 115.
So looking over their best season in each stat, it’s not close it’s Jokic 100% except for points. Also, these aren’t Jokic’s best seasons, this is actually just Jokic’s numbers from last season.
I don’t think you can remove anyone from that list. If it was top-30, I’d make Manu, Allen, Dame, Kyrie, and probably McGrady or Jimmy. Draymond and Tony Parker are also candidates for top-30. Maybe Amar’e.
That’s a guy I wouldn’t mind picking up if he hit the buyout market, but he’ll probably rejoin the Heat.
I dunno, I just feel really uncomfortable about this part of the depth chart right now:
4 Towns, Yabusele
5 Mitch, Hukporti
It doesn’t seem set up to get us through 82 games with the optimal amount of minutes for Mitch & KAT.
id make alonzo mourning even though he mostly played for the hated heat
theres already been talk of kevin love rejoining one of his former teams hubie but its not the heat its the cavs
On another topic, the article about Mike Trout in the NY Times today was really sad. What a waste of talent, he should sue the Angels for malpractice.
Mourning’s heyday was in the ’90s.
Maybe Yao should be another honorable mention.
I think the concerns about our backup big situation are valid, and I would hope that Leon is closely monitoring the situation. I would like to see more of Huk and Yabu before making any moves. I don’t know if Bagley is the guy, but hopefully some decent low-cost backup C’s shake loose before the deadline.
Kinda seems like we benched Huk because he couldn’t guard Giannis
I wonder which of the two games Mitch will be rested, thinking it will be tonight. Right now, he’s questionable.
And Bagley is just the one guy I noticed. It seems like there are many guys at the vet minimum who can provide replacement-level play this year. That’s a very good sign. I wasn’t expecting us to be able to improve the rotation during the year, but we probably can.
Guys..Michael Ray Richardson has lost his battle with prostate cancer.
Rest well, sir
With all due respect, Jokic is 3 time MVP and arguably 5 times MVP who sitill is only 30. Kobe isn’t even among the top two lakers (Jabbar and Magic).
Lenny Wilkens passed a couple days ago, too. I remember him being profoundly classy at a time when our organization was decidedly not.
He actually got an Isiah Thomas team to the playoffs, arguably the most impressive achievement in a legendary career.
I am very much enjoying seeing the Kobe stans melt down in the comment section of that article. (Said Stans would also be outraged at the suggestion that Magic was better than Kobe, I suspect.)
Wemby is a fine player, but comparing him to Jokic this season is an embarrassment. Look at the advanced numbers.
https://www.sports-reference.com/stathead/basketball/versus-finder.cgi?player_id2=wembavi01&year_min=2026&player_id1=jokicni01&seasons_type=forall&request=1&utm_id=jokicni01&utm_medium=sr_xsite&utm_campaign=2023_01_wdgt_player_comparison&utm_source=bbr
Am I the only one who ever thinks about this?
These are the Mavs picks from 2021-2026:
2021: 21
2022: 26
2023: 10
2024: 25
2025: 1
2026: probably top 6
Somehow we ended up with 2 of the 3 shitty ones from the Porzingis trade.
If we had gotten three unprotected picks, like every subsequent trade after Porzingis yielded, we would have gotten both the Lively pick and Cooper Flagg.
Yeah, Jokic is way better than Kobe. It’s a joke to compare them. It’s hard to put a cap on Jokic’s all time ranking let alone his ranking this century if he continues doing what he does so effortlessly.
Jokic is the best offensive player of all time in my book.
Re: Joker, I asked a couple of questions yesterday about his all-time ranking, but I feel like one of those was largely ignored, so let me try again:
If Jokic decided that he was done playing basketball and went home tomorrow to Croatia to take care of his horses, where would he rank all-time?
I’m thinking of taking my son to his first Knicks game tonight. I think the Grizzlies should be a good opponent for them to beat up and have a good first impression.
Hubert, I love your idea of beefing up the back up 4 position. Just not sure Bagley can play in the playoffs on a contending team. The playoff savy veteran that fits this bill is creazy eyes Bobby Portis.
With both Wizards and Nets likely finishing the season with the two worst records, Knicks two 2026 2nd round picks could be 31 and 32. You can argue that those are equivalent to late 1st due to salary flexibility.
That’s a 100% all in move. Send them salary filers of Yabu, Deuce, Dadiet etc + those two picks. Pissing of Giannis a little as a side benefit won’t hurt either.
Just looking at the above list…
He’d probably be behind LeBron.
I’d look more closely at Garnett, Duncan, Curry, and Shaq before making a decision.
If someone has a case to make for another player I’d listen.
definitely not ready to trade deuce at this time and would love to give yabu a little more time but i can at least live with him going out the door for portis along with the rest of that package throw in diawara
“If Jokic decided that he was done playing basketball and went home tomorrow to Croatia….”
Not to go doogieing on you but it is Serbia. More or less the same to us, but not to them… for a nation of less than 7million to simultaneously have Djokovic and Jokic…but Owen should be pleased as Djokovic has moved to Greece.
Right now, I would definitely have Jokic behind LeBron and Duncan in the 21st century rankings. It becomes dicey for me after that. Maybe I value defense more than others, and Jokic’s D is a major negative for me. I also think he is benefitting from playing in an historically thin center pool, especially when it comes to his defensive abilities. I personally think that prime Hakeem would have wiped the floor with him.
As to all-time, I would take Jordan, LeBron, Kareem, Wilt, Magic, Bird, and Duncan over him without blinking. Russell’s impact on winning is so much greater than his stats, so I’d have to think long and hard about that one. If I were starting a team, I would take Hakeem over him without hesitation. So it would be between Jokic and guys like Curry and Shaq to round out my top 10.
can randomness be planned?
finally got around to watching american pyscho…tried it a few times in the past, but…
the film has aged remarkably well, not so sure what was real or imagined…
maybe a little too purposefully ambiguous in the making, still what a great flick…I get the cult classic thing, it definitely has a strong certain type of vibe…
one of my all time fave gifs is of patrick bateman sayin’: no, i don’t know…maybe
one of the greatest ways ever of expressing the notion of not really caring what some one, any one else thinks or feels…
“Not to go doogieing on you but it is Serbia.”
…the mistake is even worse because no two peoples seem to hate each other more than Serbs and Croats. I admittedly made a similar gaffe in assuming that Bojan and Bogdan were brothers!!
I don’t think we can afford to shop in the Portis aisle, Director. I also don’t think we need someone that good, just someone who will give us 16 cromulent mins a night in the regular season, and maybe half that in the playoffs.
Btw don’t have the nets’ 2nd, only Washington’s and the two worst among Orl, Det, Mil.
Well the list above is only players over the last 25 years.
I still feel, even if Joker quit tomorrow, he might be tied at second place with Curry. Or a solid third, given his fake-shortened career.
If he continued to play at a high level for another 5+ years, I’d need to see an all-time list to remind me, but I struggle to imagine him not being in the top 10.
In no particular order off the top of my head: Jordan, LeBron, Kareem, Wilt, Bird, Robertson, Russell, Magic. That’s eight. I think Jokic and Curry could be shoehorned in there. In a pile with Kobe, Shaq, and Duncan.
Edit: Hadn’t seen Z-Man’s attempt, still stand by this, maybe adding Hakeem to the pile.
rama mentioning albania had me looking in to it a little…normally when I think of the adriatic area it’s italy and greece…looks like there is a whole bunch of other beautiful spots along the coast…
I’d be more interested in a defensive focused back up big than an offensive one…
My bad. We have our own too…so I guess throw in three 2nds. You’re probably right that Bobby is a reach but you have to admit he’s a perfect fit. Still shoots 40% from 3, good defender and a fierce competitor. Happy to sacrifice Deuce for Portis considering its all about this year.
Always found this to be the oddest region. Like how did Croatia get all the coast? Bosnia doesn’t like water?
Lol…its the old Dalmatian coast. Huge Roman presence that aged well fro Crooatia. They just cared about ruling the coast of the other side of the Adriatic sea to keeps ship passsage secure. There were too many pirate issues when they didn’t control it.
Btw, I think Jason Kid wishes he took the NY jobs today?
i love maps, since a kid, old and new, great way to display data, beautiful things they are…human migration is a constant, it’s built in, rate and locale vary…
until you mentioned it though hubie, hadn’t really given too much thought to the cost of establishing those boundary lines…ugh, those lines are always in the process of changing…
My bad on Sebria/Croatia. I even had a suspicion I had it wrong, and didn’t bother to check.
In other news, Hollinger is arguing that the new Dallas co-GMs’ first priority should be trading Anthony Davis. Leaving aside the massive apron problems, the fact that we don’t have the kind of picks to send to a rebuilding team, etc., would a KAT/AD frontcourt even make basketball sense?
I think a better question is: would you trade KAT straight up for AD, especially knowing that Mitch is going UFA this offseason?
I would think about it but ultimately would be too afraid of AD’s injury history and would pass. But I do think that a healthy AD brings us closer to a title.
As to a KAT/AD pairing, sure, but it seems impossible to pull off for the reasons Alan alluded to by saying “leaving aside”, so I’m not going to really think all that hard about it.
I trust AD’s body even less than mitch’s…and he makes a bazillion dollars a year…
I’m going outside now…
I don’t see the point in firing Nico now.
Apparently the new owners are morons.
They signed off the Doncic trade to pair AD and Irving and to focus on defense because they felt Doncic didn’t play defense and would eventually break down due to being of shape all the time.
Instead, Irving broke down immediately after the deal and AD is having his usual injury issues to start the year. So you’ve learned absolutely nothing so far except that if you insult Doncic badly enough, he’ll stop eating, drinking and smoking and start exercising.
The plan at this point should be try to stay as close to the playoffs/play-in as you can. If you can do that, it’s worthwhile for Irving to come back in time for the playoffs. He’s supposedly way ahead of schedule and could even come back in Jan-Feb. That way you get to see what you have down the stretch. Once you see what you have, if you don’t like it, you fire Nico and blow it up to rebuild around Flagg. Firing him now just says, “I am the clueless idiot that signed off on the trade, but I’m too stupid to even see if it will work and create a contending team. I’ll just go along with the pissed off fans and clueless media for no good reason”.
maybe he was getting ready to trade kyrie…
at this point i’d prefer jericho sims over yabu…at least he showed up ready to play…
i bet jason kid wishes he could afford some D and i dont mean that in the dirty way
I have hope that Huk will be a lot better than Sims if he gets enough reps. I saw a player emerging just before he hurt his knee last spring.
Yabu is beyond disappointing. But we’re stuck with him until at least 12/15 so hopefully we’ll see some sort of improvement, at least in his trade value.
In a larger sense (npi) I’m wondering how rigid Brown will be with rotations now that he seems to have settled in. I’m hoping he spots some of the situational guys in with the regulars. Garbage time is only so useful for player development.
Expected Lineup
PG Jalen Brunson
SG Mikal Bridges
SF OG Anunoby
PF K. Towns
C M. Robinson Ques
MAY NOT PLAY
C M. Robinson Ques
expecting kat to have a stellar game tonite against jaren jackson and jock landale but who will be our primary defender on ja
One guy who might become available for minimal price is Nick Richards. He fouls a lot and turns the ball over, but his stats otherwise look pretty decent…15 and 12 plus 1.7 blocks per 36. Might PHX do that for Yabu plus a second? They already have Mark Williams and Khaman Maluach, and also (I meant Oso) Ighodaro
I think we’ll run a lot of guys at Ja and try to get him to take a lot of perimeter shots. If he starts going off and getting to the rim, then OG will key on him. They don’t really have a lot of scoring options, JJJ is more of a catch-and-shoot guy and the rest are so-so at best.
OTOH, as I said yesterday, this feels like a trap game, so it would be excellent if we come out strong.
ive suggested nick richards and been roundly shot down for it
I watched most of the Grizzlies last game against OKC and Ja played about as badly as I’ve seen a ball dominant NBA player play. Granted OKC makes a lot of guys look bad but he was atrocious.
Nick Richards is a break glass in case of emergency type of backup big. If Yabu continues to be the stiff he has been thus far, and Huk doesn’t step up, then that might constitute an emergency. His salary pretty much matches with Yabu’s.
im still not sure what the problem with mark williams himself would be and will never understand why the lakers rescinded their trade for him under the guise of a fake medical issue when it was clear to all that he continued to play uninjured he doesnt play defense just as nick richards doesnt play defense but he holds much more promise on offense than richards does (a few really good games notwithstanding)
I was always Nick Richards curious and then I watched him play defense closely one night….
no mitch ankle maintenance first game of a back to back so this means that shamet is starting again (not deuce) i think mb likes deuce off the bench as an energy guy with josh
it’s not even so much what an idealized yabu would look like…as far as team needs it seems we need a similar type player to mitch himself, just younger and more available…
I wouldn’t trade mitch cause of his potential impact, and if he breaks down again this season, we probably wouldn’t be able to trade him…
we do have player assets, some redundancy, hopefully we can pause on using any draft assets…
OG seems fine backing up KAT at the four, so yeah let’s spend to bring in a back up center…
said so very few people ever…we need another ihart type 2025 version…not yabu dabu don’t defend…
Good that they are keeping Mitch for the Orlando game. I think they are one of the top rim attacking teams in the league so they’ll need his defense more than today, especially given the Grizzlies’ center issues.
wondering what you guys think of starting shamet instead of deuce i could make arguments for either one of them
I’d like them to start Huk in Mitch’s place to get him some run and maybe shut up all these mofos talking about trading him and some pretzels for a giant muppet.
