Cmon. That was 100% a schedule loss. If Thibs understood the room at all he would have sat everyone last night or at least split the rest between last night and tonight.
Yeah, and not only it’d be good for the bench to play to let the young guys develop a little, i think it’s in the team’s best interest to protect the starters when they’re playing really bad having them play less minutes.
Between the power outage and the Knicks playing like the 2010s tanking teams, i felt like i was time traveling. š
Sandro Mamukelashvili:
34 points
9 rebounds
3 assists
13/14 FGM
7/7 3PM
…in only 19 minutes!!!
So if I’m reading this correctly in the first 15 minutes KAT was 7-12 and the rest of the starters combined to go 0-17. What the fuck happened?
I didnāt get to watch the game (thank god). How were the announcers dealing with saying Mamukelashvili? Is that the longest last name in NBA history?
“Mamukelashvili” contains only one more letter (14) than “Antetokounmpo” (13). “Gilgeous-Alexander” contains 18 characters, if you include the hyphen. “Alexander-Walker” contains 16 characters.
So there are at least two other NBA players with longer last names than Mamukelashvili, and they are both currently active (one of them is likely to get the MVP this season).
In answer to your specific question, definitely not.
They went with just “Mamu”, at least on the Knicks broadcast.
Yeah, that’s generally what he’s gone by for a while now. This is his fifth season in the NBA (177 total games).
Hahn was violently against Gilgeous-Alexander. “No hyphens! That’s two names!”
OK, then. Martynas AndriuÅ”keviÄius of Lithuania has more letters (15) in his last name than Mamukelashvili (14), and there is no hyphen. AndriuÅ”keviÄius played in 6 games for the Cavs. He’s 7-foot-2 and 240 pounds, and is still not 40 years old. Maybe we should sign him if he’s not up to anything.
I’m glad I missed that mess so I don’t have to express an opinion other than it looks like we shot like shit and Mamu had a career game.
Josh Hart was a -26?
Were they sagging off him and making it more difficult on everyone else?
OG 3-9 from 2?
Was he driving and putting up UAPs or was he missing good looks?
What is a UAP? That’s a new one on me.
Unidentified as in UFO? Unassisted?
A Google search yields nothing that fits the context.
What sort of power outage was there?
Martynas AndriuÅ”keviÄius is almost a year younger than PJ Tucker, and fits more with what we need (Mitch insurance), rather than yet another wing.
Cavs on a 3-game losing streak.
“UAP stands for “Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena,” a term used by the US government to describe objects detected in the air, sea, and space that defy easy explanation and cannot be identified as aircraft or known natural phenomena. ”
Someitmes referred to as “Unidentified Aerial Phenomena”
More commonly referred to as a UFO.
A reversion to the mean just in time for the playoffs?
I still insist they are very good, but not as good as their record. Maybe I’m right.
Thanks, Strat.
Strat, I don’t think you can call what OG did as UFOs or any of the other acronyms, as most did not get up in the air at all. It was a full panoply of every terrible drive in the book. It was positively RJ-worthy, except that RJ would always do the same thing (drive left and get stuffed), while OG was doing complicated eurosteps and getting stuffed, fast breaks and getting stuffed, baseline drives and fumbling at the rim, and so on ad nauseum.
In no way am I intimating that OG was a main culprit in what was close to an entire team-wide brainfart. He just performed a master class in what not to do when taking it to the hole.
https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/44328557/sources-bill-chisholm-agrees-buy-celtics-61-billion
Lots of other UAPs however. The team, discounting KAT and a couple of Mitch put-back dunks, was a mind-boggling 0-20 until Cam made a shot.
Sadly their defense also mostly sucked, too.
Thanks
I know OG likes to be a bigger part of the offense, but he has to get himself under control or Thibs has to talk to him. He’s killing his own efficiency trying to do things that are outside his current skillset. If he wants to do more, then work on it in the off season.
I umm….I am very encouraged by Mitch’s performance, but disgusted with the rest of the team for last night’s performance. I’m ambivalent on KAT’s performance. Kinda expected 30 or more from him, so it was business as usual.
It is time to give Shamet’s minutes to Wright. I saw Shamet fall asleep on defense way too often last night. KAT at his worst is still better than Shamet was on that end. And..I thought he’d be pretty close to bein a knockdown shooter. But even though he’s shot it better of late, he’s not good enough on offense right now to make me forget we have Wright.
Losses like last night happen in this league, but we were never in the game. I mean- how do we let Mamu hibachi grill us like that?? Even when we knew he was hot, we still let him have too much space. Disgusting. It is too late in the season for the team to allow that. The guys should be locked in on defense at this point of the season as they get ready for the playoffs. Hopefully this ends up being the last game we have like that for the rest of the season
Mamu hibachi grill is a very nice attempt at his full name…
OK, I’m officially on team “last year’s team was better” after that loss.
Even without iHart, I think that team had more potential with all our draft picks and without KAT’s bloated contract.
Yes KAT can score in bunches, but his defense is putrid. We are now seeing what Minny saw and rightly concluded: that KAT has to play next to a real rim protector and maybe even a defensive savant in order for his team to be good… and Minny didn’t even have a sieve like Brunson on the court.
Clearly Leon fucked up by 1. going Full Nova and selling the farm for a guy who wasn’t the correct role player to put next to Brunson and 2. panicked as iHart was leaving and brought in a center with a bad contract and worse defense.
We could’ve flipped Randle for a decent defensive center plus bench scoring, kept Donte, and still had tons of picks to either use (god forbid) or trade for a good, young player.
Like Hubie said, we can still trade Mikal for a nice enough return of players and a first, but KAT/Brunson is still going to have issues defensively, although you still probably have to try and build around them and OG, I guess. It will be interesting to see how we pivot this offseason.
Second 10-day for PJ.
I get itās largely inconsequential, but itās also one of the few changes we can actually make in response to what weāre seeing, so Iām going to keep complaining about it.
It is quite possible that on some nights, a TJ Warren or a Moses Brown or whoever else would be a better option for some amount of time than Shamet, Precious, and quite frankly even Hart. If the guy can actually play a bit and relieve our minutes burden more generally, all the better. If he canāt, who cares? The alternative is PJ Tucker and weāll at least have tried something.
As inconsequential as it may be, I still find it mind-boggling that weāre simply forgoing an opportunity, however small, to get better.
We had a storm here in the north of Portugal and that was probably the cause for the electrical substation that serves my area to go down.
Ahh, I thought you meant the arena power went out or something
We kind of wish that it had.
oh no, they looked tired showing up in san antonio, then got on a plane to fly all the way to charlotte…
tonight could potentially be another rough game to watch…
It’s less than a 3-hour flight. I think they’ll be OK. Well, if they’re not OK, it won’t be because of the travel.
I’m watching St Johns. They throw up a lot of bricks some nights but at least they play defense every night.
“I don’t know what f—ing happened,” Mamukelashvili said. “I don’t know what f—ing happened.”
It’s kind of a cute story, if it hadn’t happened to the Knicks. First NBA player to score that many points (34) in under 20.
It is pretty ridiculous to play a 5 game west coast trip, return home 1 day later for a home game then immediately go back on the road for a back to back.
Actually lots of back-to-backs coming. Mavs-Clippers, Sixers-Cavs, Hawks-Suns, and Pistons-Cavs. That’s a fairly grueling last month.
Yeah, the thing about going back to the Garden for just one game before heading back out on the road to Texas and then to Charlotte is not one of the schedule maker’s finest moments.
BPL, from your article, – just can’t see how Bill Chisholm pays $6.1B and then drops half a billion in payroll especially since this is likely a highly leveraged project, – meaning they have a monthly mortgage to pay.
Boston is on pace to become the first team in NBA history to surpass $500 million in combined payroll and luxury tax payments next season, as Jayson Tatum’s supermax extension officially comes online at the same time as the final steps of the current collective bargaining agreement come online, making it prohibitively expensive to keep a team like this together for the long term.
This is clearly the last year of the Celtics. Just have to hope Brown and Holiday are sent out west somewhere. Next season, its basically NY and Cleveland at the top.
I’m not buying this for a second. I want to see the score sheet of Wilt’s 100 point game.
Wilt scored 31 in the 4th quater and 28 in the third. He played all 48 minutes.
For Wilt NOT to score 34 points in any 20 minute segment of the game, knowing he scored 31 in the 4th and 28 in the third, that means he didn’t score 3 points in the last 8 minutes of the third quarter while scoring at least 26 points in the first 4 minutes of the third?
Un possible….
I believe the intention of the information was that Mamu hibachi grill was the first player playing less than 20 minutes in a whole game to score that many points.
Who is this mystery team that would have given a decent defensive center and a bench scorer for a guy who coming off a major injury and wants a 40M/yr extension this summer with all his warts. And how was anyone going to score without a stretch 5 (who happens to be elite on the offensive end)?
Tons of picks didn’t go out in the Randle trade, but in a separate trade.
I don’t see how anyone today wants to undo the Randle trade.
Iāve been fairly pessimistic on the ceiling of this years team. But that schedule is ridiculous and last nights result means nothing and is representative of nothing
Randle for Walker Kessler and Johnny Juzang.
Isaiah Hartenstein was very, very good for us, and more importantly, was a perfect fit for what the coach was trying to do. You can make the argument that we have better talent on paper this year (I personally don’t believe that) but there’s no question to me that the fit is worse. It’s spring now and while this team has a solid record, it feels like it has never really achieved liftoff.
We’re 11-9 in our last 20 and a lot of those losses have been bad losses. Seven of the nine losses have been by double digits.
I think IHart last year was better than KAT this year. Heās a real two way player and great on defense
I think the Celtics’ plan will be to keep Tatum and Brown and try to retool around them. Both are young enough for that and they’ll remain competitive in the mean time.
This will probably be Horford’s last year or he’ll come back on a minimum. KP has one more year after this and will likely be gone after that unless they figure out a way to get out from under Holiday quickly.
My math stinks, but I think Klay Thompsonās 60 points in 29 minutes bests Wiltās 100 point game on a points/minute basis.
In those last 20 games in which we’ve gone 11-9, we’ve been outscored by a total of 48 points.
We keep having the same conversation about which team was better, last year or this year, but I think about it in terms of roles. It’s easier to make the comparison.
Towns didn’t replace I-Hart. Towns replaced Randle. Towns is the NEW #2 scoring option, that rebounds and can make some plays.
Towns > Randle
Bridges replaced DDV as 3rd scoring option. Bridges > DDV
No one replaced I-Hart or if you insist on doing it by position, no one replaced Randle. We slid OG into Randle’s slot and started J Hart.
3 players went out and 2 players came back.
A better debate is which set of pieces fit together better.
a. If we had I-Hart, Randle, OG, Bridges and Brunson would that be better?
b. If we have Mitch, Towns, OG, Bridges and Brunson would that be better?
c. What we know is that Towns, OG, Hart, Bridges and Brunson has a fit problem on defense.
We can potentially fix the issue with C by going to B, we can trade Towns (as I’ve said a few times) or we can try to find the unicorn PF to put next to Towns and slide OG to SF .
Strat, your framing is spot on on ’24 vs ’25 team.
KAT+Mikal ~50% better that Randle+DDV.
Mitch replaces 80% of iHart in starting lineup.
b) is a better team.
I can’t imagine Ainge wanting to add marginal wins this year with Randle when he is full tank mode and Randle will never want to stay in Utah unless he has no other offers.
Plus , how do we score points with two no offense , no range, no free throw shooting bigs? And a 9th man…. whoopie! Plus how does Ainge play Markkenen and Randle defensively on the floor at the same time where 4 is both of their best position?
Your math does stink…. but it is very close š
Wilt 100/48 = 2.083 p/m
Klay 60/29 = 2.069 p/m
So Klay woulda scored 99 points for the whole game if he’d kept it up.
This isn’t just some random box score stat for a random box score guy:
Chuma Okeke (who was in our system up until a short time ago) had 14 points (4/5 from 3 and 5/6 overall) and 15 rebounds (7 offensive) in 37 minutes off the Sixers bench.
Seems we could use that.
Mark Few runs a really nice offensive system, if he ever wanted to leave Gonzaga he would be an interesting choice for HC.
Bob you should be reading the stat like this: most points scored in a game with less than 20 minutes played.
We know for sure Klay Thompson once scored 37 in a quarter, but he must also have played over 20 minutes in that game to not qualify for this distinction.
The only three individual games I think that were better than Mamukelashvili’s against us last night were as follows:
1. Wemby’s 42 and 18 against us on Christmas Day
2. Tatum’s 37 and 10 against us on Opening Night (8/11 from 3)
3. Ant’s 36 and 13 against us on January 17 (8/13 from 3).
Lakers projected starting lineup tonight against the Bucks is Jaxson Hayes, Dalton Knecht, Jordan Goodwin, Gabe Vincent, and OAKAAK Shake Milton.
I’d bet that four out of five of those starters won’t go 0-20 to start the game…
Incoming Dalton Knecht 35-point game.
It is exactly that…. a random box score stat.
The great Okeke has a 3800 minute NBA sample with .499TS% and a 72 minute sample with .875 TS%. I’m betting the under on which way his next 1000 minutes go.
The Knicks watched him on a daily basis and thought a washed 40 year old would help them more.
Thanks for the nightly installment of marginal NBA player small sample size theater.
No, unlike Wilt he had already come out of the game for standard non-Thibsian rest, so he would have only scored 84 points had he not been benched (per Bobās math, I think. Like I saidā¦.)
Btw, Itās kinda crazy that Klay scoring 37 in a quarter wasnāt in the game he scored 60 in 29 mins.
early start at 4pm…
last night it seemed like the game got started quicker than normal…
Are you forgetting that the Mark Williams trade was rescinded or are you saying that about tonight’s Lakers/Bucks game?
If the trade hadn’t been rescinded, I’d totally agree BTW š
they already knew they wanted to get that shit over with as fast as possible…
DaQuan Jeffries starting for the Hornets.
Also apparently no Mitch.
I decided not to go to the game tonight. If they lose I will take full responsibility.
are you feeling okay g-man?
Clyde on the call tonight, for those thinking about watching college ball instead…
It just seems like we canāt shoot anymore
And the Charlotte announcers just showed two replays of two Charlotte scores and talked about how Towns was out of position and ineffective defensively . They were right.
Josh Hartās face is in a permanent state of pissed off and annoyed
I’m good Geo. Thanks for asking. Just didn’t feel like going.
